What do you dislike about shopping

What do you dislike about shopping

Do you like shopping? Why (not)?

What questions will you ask a shop assistant to help you to choose a purchase?

What can you advise a person who wants to buy many things (clothes, foodstuffs, etc.) but has little time?

Parents usually give pocket money to their children. How do you usually spend your pocket money?

I 1.Let’s talk about shopping and money. What do you know about the history of money?

The use of money is as old as the human civilization. Money is basically a method of exchange, and coins and notes are just items of exchange. But money was not always the same form as the money today, and is still developing.

The basis of all early commerce was barter, in other words the direct exchange of one product for another, with the relative values a matter for negotiation. Subsequently both livestock, particularly cattle, and plant products such as grain, come to be used as money in many different societies at different periods. The earliest evidence of banking is found in Mesopotamia between 3000 and 2000 B.C. when temples were used to store grain and other valuables used in trade.

Various items have been used by different societies at different times. Aztecs used cacao beans. Norwegians once used butter. The early U.S. colonists used tobacco leaves and animal hides. The people of Paraguay used snails. Roman soldiers were paid a «salarium» of salt. On the island of Nauru, the islanders used rats. Human slaves have also been used as currency around the world. In the 16th century, the average exchange value of a slave was 8000 pounds of sugar.

Gradually, however, people began exchanging items that had no intrinsic value, but which had only agreed-upon or symbolic value. An example is the cowrie shell. Metal tool money, such as knife and spade monies, was also first used in China. These early metal monies developed into primitive versions of round coins at the end of the Stone Age. Chinese coins were made out of copper, often containing holes so they could be put together like a chain. The Chinese invented also paper money during the T’ang Dynasty.

The Bank of Sweden issued the first paper money in Europe in 1661, though this was also a temporary measure. In 1694 the Bank of England was founded and began to issue promisory notes, originally handwritten but later printed. To make travelling with gold less dangerous, goldsmiths, or people who made jewelry and other items out of gold, came up with an idea. The goldsmiths started writing out notes on pieces of paper that said the person who had the note could trade the note in for gold. These promissory notes were the beginning of paper money in Europe. If you look at a British bank note today, you’ll see it still says: I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of twenty pounds.

I 2.Do you like shopping? Why (not)?

Variant I

Some people hate shopping. So they make a list of what they need and run through stores. Others make a hobby of shopping tours. They go from store to store looking for goods of better quality and lower price. Like most girls I like shopping.

Modern shopping centres do their best to prove to you that shopping may be fun. That’s why they tend to combine shopping and leisure. A modern shopping centre often looks like a city under one roof. Besides a great variety of stores, shops and outlets one can find there theme parks with rides, amusements and games. If you are tired you can enjoy delicious food in a restaurant or just have a snack in a cafeteria or a café. Information desk will help you not to be at a loss and to save your time.

To make shopping convenient for all, shopping centres offer you free of charge: late night shopping, recreation areas, special facilities for the elderly and disabled and shopping trolleys and baskets.

Variant II

I can’t say that I’m very fond of shopping, but it is a part of our daily life and it is a chore that needs to be done. What I really enjoy doing is calling at the confectionary department. I have a sweet tooth and I nearly always manage to talk mother into buying me some sweets, a bar of chocolate, some biscuits or the like.

I 3.What questions will you ask a shop assistant to help you to choose a purchase?

Could you help me, please?

What goods can I purchase in you shop? Are there any discounted goods to buy there?

May I look at it?

How much does it cost?

Have you got anything else?

I 4.What can you advise a person who wants to buy many things (clothes, foodstuffs, etc.) but has little time?

Variant I

It’s a common problem. We always have little time to do everything we need. I think that buying online can be a solution to this problem. It will not take you a lot of time to choose what you want from a catalogue on the Internet. Just a few clicks! They will be delivered by post. Isn’t it convenient? Unfortunately, it is not all that simple. You can’t see what you are buying. You should consider everything carefully before you make an order.

Variant II

I’m sure that a supermarket is a good place for those who want to buy many foodstuffs but have little time. They can buy bread and buns at the baker’s counter; milk, cottage cheese or sour cream at the dairy department; pork or beef at the butcher’s; and potatoes, onions and cabbage at the greengrocery.

Those who want to buy clothes or other things can go to the Central Department Store. You can buy everything you need there.

I 5.Parents usually give pocket money to their children. How do you usually spend your pocket money?

Variant I

Some people think that teenagers become more responsible and sensible getting pocket money. Others claim that young people can not deal with money and believe they waste it on useless things. I would like to express my opinion on this situation.

I think that pocket money helps teenagers to learn how to plan their budget. There are a lot of things they want to spend their money on, but the amount of money is limited. Moreover, teenagers get information about the cost of living. It helps them to realize what kind of job to choose in future to earn enough money for everything they want to get.

On the other hand, many people say that teenagers waste money. I do not agree with this statement, because we spend a lot of money on food as most of us spend our time at school or courses. We spend money on clothes because looking smart and fashionable is very important today. We pay for mobile phones and the Internet. However, some people argue that teenagers have no idea of how difficult money is earned. I disagree, because many teenagers have part time jobs and realize that to make good money they have to be hardworking, reliable and intelligent.

All things considered, there are two points of view on this problem. I believe that parents should give teenagers pocket money because sensible spending of it teaches them a lot of.

Variant II

Nearly all teenagers can afford to buy small things because parents give them pocket money. I think it is quite reasonable. We spend a lot of time at school and we need money to buy something to eat during the day. We can also buy some small things for ourselves, like exercise-books, toothpaste, or perfume.

Variant III

I usually spend my pocket money on different entertainments, such as going to a cafe or a disco or I buy something tasty at our school canteen.

№2

Let’s talk about shopping. Who does the shopping in your family?

Is Minsk a shopper’s paradise? Why (not)?

What questions will you ask your friend who has bought an expensive telephone?

What can you advise a teenager who wants to buy a birthday present for his/her friend?

Some teenagers think that parents should pay them for doing their household chores. Do you share their opinion?

Todd: OK, Shona, let’s talk about shopping. What are things you don’t like to go shopping for?

Shona: Exactly. Exactly.

Todd: OK.

Shona: Shoes.

Todd: Shoes.

Shona: Shoes I cannot shop for because I have like quite big feet. I’ve got like a size eight, which is like a forty. I think it is a forty-one. I think it’s quite big for a girl, and I always see like really pretty shoes I really want, but they just don’t fit my big feet, so it’s like a big disappointment.

Shona: Yeah, and like dress sizes as well. It’s like really confusing.

Todd: Like, everytime you buy shoes, it will say, » UK 12, USA 10, International 6″ or whatever and it’s always really confusing.

Shona: I know exactly.

Todd: OK, so you don’t like food. You don’t like shoes. Anything else you don’t like to shop for?

Shona: I don’t like to shop for technical things.

Todd: Oh, that’s the best.

Shona: No. It’s good for like some people.

Todd: Oh, I love that.

Shona: Especially male. I’m not being like sexist, but for me shopping for technical stuff is just so boring and it confuses me on end.

Todd: Actually, that’s probably what I like to shop for the most. I think it’s fun.

Shona: I can tell, actually. No, I just, I hardly ever need to get anything that’s like too technical. If I do, like, I’ll just ask someone else’s advice because I just don’t have a clue.

Todd: Right, but you have a computer right?

Shona: I have one, yeah. I have a laptop.

Todd: And you have an MP3 player?

Shona: Yeah, but these things have both been bought for me. I didn’t buy them myself.

Todd: Ah.

Shona: Yeah, so that’s why. A hair dyer, like I don’t mind buying something like that but anything technical and it’s just I’m not going to enjoy shopping for it.

I just find it incredibly boring and I just like to get in and out of the supermarket as quickly as possible.

When you find something ‘incredibly boring,’ it means that you have no interest in it and it therefore does not hold your attention.

Notice the following:

I don’t have a clue what they are

There are just so many items, that I don’t have a clue what they are.

‘I don’t have a clue what they are’ means that you have no knowledge about certain things.

Notice the following:

zombies with their trolleys

The lighting in supermarkets is just too bright for me, and everyone’s walking around like zombies with their trolleys.

‘Zombies with their trolleys’ refers to the way in which shoppers at supermarkets look so bored that they resemble the living dead.

In Japan, where we live now, it’s not so fun because I can’t read and it really drives me nuts.

When something ‘drives you nuts,’ it means that it annoys you.

If the United Nations does anything, they should make a universal shoe size.

Шаг 3 Very much

Многие кандидаты совершают подобные ошибки, произнося следующие фразы на экзамене IELTS

Some of the sentences below are incorrect, while others are correct. Identify the incorrect sentences and write the correct sentences in the spaces provided.

Interviewer: What do you dislike about parties?

Candidate: Well, I generally enjoy the parties I go to, but there are a few things I don’t like. I don’t like all the drinking that usually happens and I’m not keen on meeting lots of new people at parties. If there are too many strangers at a party, I find myself having the same conversation again and again: Where are you from? What’s your major? What’s your job? I can’t stand repeating myself and this kind of conversation is very superficial; you don’t really get to know the person at all.

Interviewer: What don’t you like about your job?

Candidate: I don’t particularly like my job. I’m not interested in the field I work in, and I don’t like my line manager or many of my colleagues very much – they’re all so boring. But I absolutely hate about my job is the commute. It takes me about two hours to get to work; I have to travel during the rush hour on the subway and public buses which are always jam-packed with people – it’s terrible!

Maria: Rory, do you often buy things?

Rory: I suppose I do my food shopping on a weekly basis. But major purchases are like once or twice a year. I’ll save up a lot of money and I’ll buy a lot of things from Amazon when I go home.

Maria: Do you enjoy buying things?

Rory: The shopping experience? I don’t know… I’m not really one for window shopping or just buying things for the sake of it, to be honest. I like to think about what I’m going to buy. Go in, buy it and then leave. I’m quite a straightforward person like that. If you’re someone that likes to go shopping. I’m probably the worst person to do this with.

Maria: A typical man…

Maria: Do you enjoy buying expensive things?

Rory: If they have some kind of utility, like a new laptop or phone, but not for the sake of it. If I’m going to buy expensive thing, it’s got to be more of an asset than a liability.

Maria: Do you compare the price in different shops before you buy something?

Rory: I used to, but now I don’t have so much time when I go shopping, so what I’ll normally do is buy more expensive things online, and I think Amazon has this function where you can just automatically do price comparisons. But if not, then it’s easy enough to open up multiple tabs on your Internet browser and just compare prices this way. So, yes, I do compare the prices for different things, but not in different shops.

Maria: Do you usually search for bargains?

Rory: Not really when it comes to food shopping. I usually… I’m quite set in my ways, so I won’t normally look for any bargains. I suppose the only thing that I might look for bargains with is if I’ve got, sort of, bigger purchases, then you sort of look for the best deal that’s available. But it’s not the my normal practice when I go shopping.

Maria: When do you go to get a low price?

Rory: Well, for food, like, supermarkets always have the best deals. They have, like, “buy one, get one free” or they’ve got special discounts, for example. And that’s the best place for me, I think. I imagine there are other places you could shop online, but I don’t really like online shopping for food.

Maria: What things do you buy online?

Rory: Electronics or experiences or, like, supplements for working out and going to the gym. I’ll sometimes buy services like… well, I suppose… I wanted to go shooting once so you could purchase a voucher online to do that. I think I did the same thing for when I was learning how to fly too.

Maria: You were learning how to fly!?

Rory: I was going to. I bought… Sorry, I was arranging this before the crisis happened and everything shut down. So I still have to… well, I still have to do this. Maybe sometime this year. Not soon though.

Maria: Yeah, but fly with what? With wings?

Rory: With a glider.

Maria: Oh that’s nice

Rory: It’s always something I wanted to do. Just the one time. I wanted to be able to say that I’d learned how to fly.

Maria: Rory’s going to learn how to fly!

Rory: Fingers crossed.

Maria: How lovely is that? What was the last thing you bought?

Rory: Well, apart from the food shop, I do that every Friday, I think the last major thing I bought was perfume from my mom. It was for her birthday.

Maria: But what about for yourself? What did you buy for yourself?

Rory: Nothing really… Outside of supplements and food, to be honest, I’m quite a low maintenance person. I don’t make major purchases that often. I think the most expensive thing I bought recently, apart from the supplements, was probably a bottle of wine. That was a nice bottle of wine. It was like a thousand rubles. Really! I’ve got I’ve got a taste for expensive wine! *Rory being sarcastic*
