“What Are You Looking For in Your Next Position?” Answer Examples
I’ve interviewed hundreds of people as a recruiter, and one of my favorite questions to ask is, “What are you looking for in your next position?”
There are a couple of specific reasons your interviewer will ask this question, and a few big mistakes you need to avoid if you want to get the job.
So in this article, I’ll walk you through how to answer this question and impress the interviewer, no matter what variation of the question they ask… including:

Why Employers Ask You to Describe What You Are Looking For in Your Next Job
Hiring managers, recruiters and HR staff all like to ask this question. You could hear this among the questions in a phone interview, or in a late-stage interview near the end of the process.
Here are the two big reasons employers love to ask this:
First, they want to make sure you’re targeting something specific in your job hunt
Employers want to hire people with goals and motivation for their career. No employer wants to hire someone who is just looking for the first job they can find, or any job they can get.
They’d prefer to find someone who has specific reasons for wanting their job – because from their perspective, that person is going to be more motivated and interested in the work… and more likely to stay long-term!
And if they ask a variation of this question that mentions challenges… like, “What challenges are you looking for in a job?”… then it’s a clear sign that they want someone motivated and eager to grow their career.
Some companies won’t care about this as much; they just want to hire someone who can fill their immediate need and do the job. But when a company asks a question like the example above, they’re NOT that type of company. They would like to find somebody who they can promote and help grow in the organization.
And next, they ask this to make sure their job fits the overall theme of what you’re looking for
If you’re interviewing at a company with a very relaxed work environment where you self-manage a lot, and you tell them that you’re looking for a rigid work environment where you can just follow instructions from your boss, then they aren’t going to offer you the job.
So make sure you research the company culture and work environment to help prepare to answer this interview question. We’ll talk about everything else you should do to give a great answer next…
How to Answer, “What Are You Looking For in Your Next Position?”
When you go to answer this question, the first thing you need to do is have a specific idea of what challenges you’re targeting or what type of learning opportunity you’d like to find next in your career.
You want to sound motivated and eager to learn, and you need to be able to explain it clearly and concisely to them.
Let’s look at a sample interview answer now, so you can see how this would sound in a real interview.
Example Answer #1:
“I’d love to lead more client projects in my next role. I’ve enjoyed communicating with clients in my current Account Manager position, but my Team Leader manages most of the projects in terms of being responsible for the deliverables, delegating tasks, and more. I feel ready for that challenge now, so I’m hoping to do that in my next position.”
The sample answer above is effective because it:
There’s one way to make your answer better, though… and that’s to mention something specific that excites you about their position (usually something you saw on the job description, or something you learned in a previous interview with someone else in the company).
So let’s look at the same example answer above, but with more information at the end, “tailored” to the employer’s job…
Here’s the Same Sample Answer, But With a “Tailored” Ending:
“I’d love to lead more client projects in my next role. I’ve enjoyed communicating with clients in my current Account Manager position, but my Team Leader manages most of the projects in terms of being responsible for the deliverables, delegating tasks, and more. I feel ready for that challenge now, so I’m hoping to do that in my next position. When I spoke to Bethany in my phone interview, she mentioned that the person you hire will start by leading one or two client projects at a time, and could grow into leading even more. So the position sounds exciting.”
Now you’ve shown the employer that you’re motivated and energetic about your work… you’ve put thought into your job search and know what you want (so you’re less likely to change your mind and leave after a few months, or lose motivation), and you’ve shown them why you’re excited about their particular job and why you want to work for them.
That’s how to get the hiring manager excited about offering you the position. If you can do this, they’re going to forget about those other candidates and offer you the job ASAP!
However, questions like, “What challenges are you looking for?” are a bit trickier, because it’s easy to fall into the trap of only talking about yourself and forget to relate it to the employer and their job.
The best answers, like the sample answer above, will show what you’re looking to do in the next position you take and what excites you as a professional… but will also show the employer that you took the time to understand their job and that you there are specific things that excite you about working for them.
Example Answer #2:
“I enjoy working as part of a team, so one thing that I’m targeting in my next position is a collaborative, team-focused environment. Based on what I saw from researching your company and reviewing the job description, it sounds like that’s the type of work culture you promote here, so I’m excited to learn more about the opportunity today.”
How to Answer, “What Are Three Things That Are Most Important For You in Your Next Position?”
If they ask, “Describe the three things that are most important for you in your next job,” then take a second to think, get your answer organized in your head, and address the question directly at the beginning of your answer.
You should start by saying, “The three things that I’m looking for are…”
Then, mention those three things, and conclude by talking about why their job seemed like a good match for what you want. Tell them what caught your interest in their position or why you applied.
Example Answer #3:
“Three things that I’m looking for in my next job are a collaborative, team-focused culture, opportunities to learn and grow my skills from a technical standpoint, and a chance to learn more leadership skills over time. After reading the job description for this role, it sounds like this could be a good match for what I’m looking for, so I was excited to come interview for the position and learn more.”
If you follow the tips above, you’ll have a great answer when employers ask questions about what type of challenge you’re looking in the job interview. You’ll be more memorable, get more job offers, and avoid giving them fear or doubt over whether you’re the right person for the role!

If you’ve been using Tinder for long enough, you would have definitely heard the age-old question: “What are you looking for on Tinder?” If you’ve then proceeded to freak out, you’re not alone.
Maybe you’ve had one of these variations:
This question can be make or break… What if she is thinking the absolute worst about me? What if what we want is completely different and she stops talking to me?
Well, my friend, you are not alone if you’ve thought this way. I have heard from numerous guys that they have been unmatched or had conversations fizzle out due to this.
So… How should you answer what you are looking for? Well, the truth is, first of all, it really depends on you, and what you are actually looking for.
Are you looking for a hookup on Tinder? Or are you looking to start dating? Maybe you are just curious or bored, or somewhere in between.
The fact is, everyone is on Tinder for different reasons, and it’s okay to have your own reasons.

Why Your Match Is Asking What You Are Looking For On Tinder
This is the real question. The main reason she is asking is to see if what you want is aligned with her. So, basically, she is asking this to filter out the wrong kind of guys.
It’s a tricky question, especially if her bio is blank. Of course, honesty is the best policy. If you strictly want something casual or a relationship, tell them.
But for the rest of this post, I’m going to assume you are open to what you are looking for. Maybe a hookup, maybe someone just the hang out with, maybe something more?

There are a number of reasons as to why your match is on Tinder. That’s probably why you are freaking out about how to answer their question.
I get it man, you don’t want to say you’re maybe looking for something a bit more serious if your match is only looking for a hookup.
Remember, this is only if you are open to anything on Tinder and not looking for anything specific.
Recently a study explored the difference in intent between male and female Tinder users.
Although the results were fairly similar, the intent for one-night stands was the main difference between genders. Which I assume a lot of you would have already known.
Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely a lot of women looking for something casual on Tinder, it’s just quite a bit different from the number of guys.
The main takeaway from this isn’t that there might be a few more guys looking for a fling out there (which I’m sure you already knew), but mainly that what men and women are looking for isn’t all that different.
Another interesting point I take away from this data is the variation in what ALL people are looking for, regardless of being male or female.
How To Answer “What Are You Looking For On Tinder?”
Are you not sure what you are looking for on Tinder? Great! I don’t think many people are! So when it comes to answering this question, I feel this is the best way to answer it.
Now, you don’t want to straight-up answer “I don’t know”. That will leave your match disappointed. The best way to answer what you are looking for on Tinder is to be ambiguous, whilst giving your answer.
This could sound a bit confusing to some of you, but let me give you an example to help illustrate what I mean.
Question: What are you looking for on Tinder?
Answer: “To be honest, I’m not completely sure. I downloaded it mainly out of boredom and some curiosity. I’m not just on here for a hookup, but don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that. But the main reason I’m on here is to just meet some cool people with no expectations and see where things go.”
This might sound like a mouthful to some of you, but I have never ever seen a negative response to this, in fact, I feel it always gets a very positive response.
That’s because it ticks almost every box, but also doesn’t put you into one specific category of either looking for a hookup or a relationship.
Plus, being laid back and open to different experiences is generally an attractive quality.
If she wants a hookup, you are the guy, if she wants a relationship you are the guy, plus you aren’t shying away from something casual assuming that she doesn’t want that.
If You Are Using Tinder For A Hookup (But Are Open-Minded)
Again, you don’t want to be completely polarizing and say something along the lines of “I just want a hookup”. Even if your match is this could scare her off.
The number of matches you would scare away versus the amount that would like your honesty would be a little too high for my liking…
You can (and should) still be honest though, but can do some a little more ambiguously.
Here’s an example:
Question: What are you looking for on Tinder?
Answer: “I don’t know the exact answer to that question. I guess it’s not for anything too specific and I’m open to just meeting some cool people. I’m probably not looking for anything too serious, but also not just desperately searching for a hookup. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with meeting up with someone like that, but I wouldn’t say that’s the only reason I’m here.”
The takeaway from this example is that you have definitely thought about using Tinder for something casual, but are not desperate and strictly trying to get laid from anyone.
No one wants to feel like they are one of the many people you are just trying to get a one-night stand from.
If You Are Using Tinder To Find A Relationship (But Are Open-Minded)
From the graph above it’s clear that you are way more likely to find someone with some common ground if this is what you are looking for, especially compared to one-night stands.
But with that being said, you still don’t want to outright say “I am looking for a serious girlfriend!” It’s just a bit too much pressure. Let’s take a look at an example:
Question: What are you looking for on Tinder?
Answer: “The main reason is to meet some cool people, maybe catch up and see where things go. I’m not exactly searching for my next girlfriend, but not opposed to the idea of meeting someone from Tinder.”
If your match is looking for a partner then this will be perfect for her, but even if she’s not, she wouldn’t freak out thinking that you will be wanting more. Perfect!
Remember, I have never seen any negative pushback from any of these responses, so try them out next time you’re faced with this question.
Final Thoughts
Just remember to try and be as honest as you can with what it is you are looking for on Tinder.
Don’t lie, and your match will appreciate your honesty and be more willing to hang out.

Today, we’re going to discuss why that question is so important to women and how to answer it depending on your desires.
Before we get into figuring out the right answer. We first ought to find out why women on Tinder like to send you the following text:
IMPORTANT: Just because you want to give your Tinder crush the ‘right’ answer doesn’t mean you should pretend to be someone you’re not. In the end it’s all about being yourself and not the person she wants you to be.
Right after the why, you’re going to get the most common pitfalls when answering “What are you looking for on Tinder?”. And how to make a good impression, regardless of whether she shares your views.
From there, I’ll give you the copy pastable lines you so greatly desire.
Let’s start with why.
Why do people ask ‘what are you looking for on Tinder?’
As is well established, Tinder is falsely known as the hookup app.
Not every woman is looking for a fling or a hookup. Many, in fact, are looking for something meaningful.
So asking, “What are you looking for on Tinder?” works well as a filter.
Just like the right question in a game of Guess Who?, your answer lets her know if she’s on the right track: would I like to date him or not?
Now, I already put you on a false trail.
You probably think the people who ask you this question DON’T want hookups and DO want relationships.
Someone might also ask you this question to discover other traits and desires of yours. Such as:
So what seems like a simple question actually gives a woman a ton of info.
Which is why you want to get the answer right.
By which I mean: give the answer that most closely matches your desires.
We’ll find out what that looks like soon.
“What are you looking for?” and its tricky details
Her goal is clear: she wants to see if you share the same priorities as her. Which often leads to guys making the next mistake:
“Hmm… I wonder what she wants to hear…”
Look, I understand that frame of mind. But that mindset will RUIN your chances with women.
Because you’re trying to match her idea of the perfect partner, rather than think if she matches your idea of the perfect partner.
Which shows me you’re willing to lie about your standards (or that you have no standards) because…
…you’re coming from a position of scarcity.
In short, you feel like you need to make every match count.
And so you lie about what you’re looking for instead of fixing the real problem:
What do women really want?
A man who has the guts to be himself and speak his mind.
Ninety percent of dudes are trying to smile and ‘nice guy’ their way into a woman’s panties.
With every guy pretending to be Prince Charming, women have grown tired of the fakery.
Now, women want to date real men (even if he only wants to keep it casual).
My long-winded point?
Never try to give an answer you assume she’ll want to hear. Be your genuine self.
Did she ask you what you’re looking for on Tinder?
Answer her question based on:
The first bullet we already discussed, but the second came flying out of left field.
So let me explain.
If she asks you what you’re looking for early on in the conversation, she’s a dating newb.
I know she’s trying to screen, but by filtering on relationships so early in the convo, she’s telling me that she values the idea of a relationship more than exploring the person she just matched with.
Suppose you got on Tinder looking for something casual, but you met someone who you have an AMAZING click with, and who makes you not want to date anyone else.
You’re not going to say, “Well, shit. Too bad I got on Tinder to find hookups! Better never text you again.”
The opposite is also true.
…You won’t go, “Shame we met and had an epic time, because I’m only looking for a wife! BYE!”
You’ll keep her around as a friend.
So if she asks you what you’re looking for EARLY in the conversation, a serious answer isn’t worth your time. Go funny instead (I’ll give you a few good lines in the next tip).
Does she ask you LATER in the convo, I recommend you to be serious. Because your answer may be what decides if she wants to meet you in real life or not.
With all the theory out of the way, let’s get into some concrete, stealable answers.
How to answer “What are you looking for on Tinder?”
The moment you’ve all been waiting for…
How to answer, “What are you looking for on Tinder?”
For any of the following lines to work, you obviously want to use the line that best resonates with your situation.
All valid desires. Each with their own specific answer.
Whatever you want, I recommend you tell the truth.
There’s just one problem with the truth… it can be told in a thousand ways.
That’s why I’m going to give you a copy pastable line for each of the above scenarios.
#1: What absolutely NOT to say
I’ve seen this guy-answer and it’s countless variations thousands of times and it makes me sick to my stomach:
Why does that answer make me sick to my stomach?
Because it’s a BIG. FAT. FUARKING. LIE!
Every guy knows why he’s on Tinder: to meet chicks! (Sorry for the derogatory language, mom, but guys don’t call women ‘ladies’ behind closed doors.)
And your Tinder match knows what you want too.
So when you beat around the bush or keep it vague, that’s a HUGE red flag to her.
Equally bad answers are:
“Yah, right…”
Sure, it could be genuine. And in some cases it is. But 99,23459% of guys who send similar texts aren’t being genuine.
Those guys are just afraid to tell the truth and scare her off.
If you don’t, she’ll likely lose all respect for you. Unless she actually believes your horseshit about being ‘curious.’
#2: You’re looking to hook up
Sure, it sounds crass. But if school or work leaves you with little time for regular meetups, it makes perfect sense.
The beauty of the ‘fuckboi’ desire is that it leaves you lots of options.
Dodging the question with humor will give most girls the idea that you’re not looking for anything serious.
Which is why humor is one of my favorite ways to answer when I’m in a wham-bam-thank-you-ma’m mood.
Let me give you an example:
“Louis, is that a ‘REAL man’ answer? Sure doesn’t feel like it.”
I get what you’re saying.
Why not just say S-E-X, right?
Because that can be read as, “I’m a walking penis with no standards and who likes holes.”
And that RARELY gets a good reaction—unless you’re her type—because most women don’t like to feel dispensable.
Even though you just want sex, she still wants to be ‘picked’ as your acrobatics partner based on her personality. Or, at the very least…
She wants to be wooed.
So the least you want to do is flirt and make the Tinder convo worth her while.

#3: When you want a friend with benefits
If you want a casual buddy with whom you can also do the bedroom mambo…
Humor isn’t your go-to method of choice.
Because you want more than just a pretty face. You also want someone who doesn’t drive you crazy outside the boudoir.
In fact, you’d probably like it if you ‘click.’
In that case you want to write an answer based on…
Your opinion.
To keep it simple, here’s what I mean:
It’s light-hearted and funny. And in my case there’s also a truth to it: I can’t stand people who leave a roll of cardboard in the toilet paper holder.
This humorous answer with a hint of ‘standards’ shows her that I’m probably looking for someone who I’m going to see more than once. And that I’m not necessarily looking for something serious.
So the meaning is open, although it’s unlikely I’m looking for a one night stand.
#4: When you’re open for anything
When this is you, the answer is simple:
169% honesty.
The above texts will likely get you lots of good responses.
#5: When you want a committed relationship
I’m about to rub some of you the wrong way, but I feel that this is something you need to hear.
Just because you want a committed relationship, doesn’t mean dating is all about finding The One. And that you should stop seeing someone just because that person doesn’t know exactly what they want.
It’s totally fine to go on dates and see where things go.
If you’re constantly seeing how every Tinder match holds up to your standards, you’ll turn dating into a stress fueled series of interviews.
Anyway, if a committed relationship is what you want, you never want to write an answer that basically tells your Tinder match:
“I’m desperate to get married and have 5 kids.”
That’s why I recommend you answer “What are you looking for on Tinder?” like this:
It shows you’re not a needy romantic, but actually a man with a big heart who isn’t playing around.
It wouldn’t surprise me if these lines even get girls with casual intentions to try and win you over.
You just seem so darn mature.
#6: When you want to enjoy your time until you find that special lady
I currently fall into this boat, which means I like evening calisthenics with beautiful women, but am also open to a serious and loving relationship.
It also means that I’ve experimented with phrasing this desire for quite a while.
Curious about the best way to phrase it?
Here’s my two takes. Pick whichever you prefer:
Go with whichever you like.
Both should get you the results you want.
#7: When you feel like joking around
Sometimes you just don’t feel like being serious.
I wouldn’t evade the question too much since it will look like you’ve got something to hide.
But still, sometimes it’s better to just make her laugh and goof around.
Then I suggest some of these funny answers to the question:
Or maybe even more ridiculous:
Or lastly, this one will be riskier so you might want to try the first few options.
But here it goes:
Use the last answer at your own risk! When she’s laughing her ass off from all your Tinder jokes you might get away with it.
Now a very important topic for you, my friend:
Never get asked “What are you looking for on Tinder?” again
Some of you may not mind getting this question (especially now you know what to answer.)
Others may find it annoying or even hate it.
If you fall in the hate category, let me help you on how to never get this question again.
“Is that even possible, Louis?”
Yep. And it’s quite simple. Depending on your date desires.
The reason she asks you what you’re looking for on Tinder, is because she doesn’t know what you want.
What if I told you that you can tell her what you want without even sending her a text.
Communicate what you want with your Tinder profile!
Do you want to keep it casual?
Have a collection of photos that portray you as a fun bachelor. Such as by having a good mix of masculine but friendly photos. Think: dark clothes, a bit of a stubble or beard, slick haircut, some shots that reveal your muscular physique, and a candid photo of you hiking in the mountains.
Do you want a serious relationship?
“I get it, Louis! Then you have romantic photos and have a bio that says:”
No hookups or ONS
I dig the enthusiasm, my friend.
But you’re slightly off the mark.
You see, by writing a bio that reads “no hookups or ONS” or “not looking for something casual and not interested in anyone fresh out of a relationship”…
…you’re doing more than communicating your standards.
Because what does she see in a Tinder ‘about me’ like that?
Your emotional baggage.
She’ll likely assume, “Okay, so he’s been in a bunch of casual relationships where he wanted more and she didn’t. Why didn’t these women want more? And what’s with this criteria of not wanting a girl who is fresh out of a relationship?”
The point is, stuff like that makes you sound bitter and butthurt.
By saying what you DON’T want, you’re actually saying what you’ve had in the past.
So I recommend you say what you DO want.
Suppose you want a relationship, fill your bio with:
Looking for someone else who’s excited about building a connection
Or get even more specific and say:
Looking for a cute butt to rest my head on while I watch Ducktales reruns
Whatever it is that you do with your profile, the main thing I want you to take away is this:
Build the dating profile that will ATTRACT the person you WANT.
