Twitch Username Does Not Exist and Is Not Available

Last Updated November 2, 2021

Sometimes a username doesn’t exist on Twitch, which can leave you wondering why you can’t use it. This post will cover the reasons why.

If you are receiving the error “Twitch Username Doesn’t Exist” when logging into your existing account, click here to jump ahead to that information. The first part of this post will cover general reasons why usernames don’t exist and are unusable.

When setting up your account or changing your username, you may encounter a message that states that your chosen username doesn’t exist. While there is an infinite amount of names that you can choose from, it seems that this message is seen regularly due to many people wishing to use the same name.

Changing Your Username on Twitch

Twitch allows its users to change their usernames every 60 days. Though we recommend active streamers to avoid rebranding if possible, if you want to change your username, we cover each step in our article, How to Change Your Username on Twitch.

If a username isn’t available, it could be due to one of these possibilities:

Trying to change your name on Twitch is the fastest way of seeing if a username is unavailable.

What to do if a Twitch Username is Already in Use

The most common reason for an unavailable username is that it is already in use. There are a few ways you can check to see if this is the case. Twitch will not let you know when a username becomes available again, so if you have your heart set on a particular one, it is a good idea to check for it frequently.

Note: if a username has previously been used by a streamer, their broadcasted videos and other information will not be associated with your account even if you manage to get the username. That information will still belong to the streamer’s account or will have been deleted.

Here are some tools you can use when researching a particular username.

How to get a Twitch Username Which is Taken But Not Active

Step 1 – Use the Twitch Username and User ID Translator

Twitch Username and User ID Translator is a chrome extension that will give you the User ID number from a username. The extension will let you know if the username or user ID doesn’t exist.

Step 2 – View Username Changelogs

To see if the username previously existed but was changed, you can use the username change search tool created by Twitch Tools. This tool may give you an approximate date for when the name was changed, so you’ll have a better idea when to check back in the future.

Step 3 – Set a Timer to Watch the Username

If your heart is set on a particular name, set up a timer to remind you to frequently see if it has been taken. This way, you won’t forget and there will be less of a risk of someone else snatching the name before you get to it.

When Will a Previously Used Twitch Name Become Available?

If your chosen username has been previously used, it may or may not become available again. Here is a breakdown of Twitch’s policy:

How to Switch Back to Your Previous Twitch Username

If you recently changed your username and regret the change, there are two ways you can try to switch back to your previous name:

Why Does Twitch Say Current Username is Unavailable?

Every once in awhile a regular user will encounter this problem. Unfortunately, Twitch support isn’t always helpful and won’t respond to messages or requests for help. Other times, it may be that you have inputted your username (or email address) incorrectly or can’t remember your password. Try the following steps to see if you can fix the problem on your own:

Another reason why your username may not be available is if it was suspended or removed.

Why Was Your Twitch Username Suspended or Removed?

While you will need to check with Twitch support to find out the exact reason why your username was removed from Twitch, it could be due to one of the following three reasons:

In addition to disabling your username, Twitch may delete any content you have saved to your account. Reach out to Twitch support to find out more about your specific case.

Conclusion

More often than not if a username isn’t available on Twitch but isn’t in use, it is probably in the bin waiting to be recycled. Check back frequently to find out when it is available.

So you want to have multiple Twitch accounts, but you don’t want to have a ton of different emails. What’s the solution then? Let’s discuss.

How Many Twitch Accounts Can You Have On The Same Email?

You can have as many Twitch accounts on the same email as you’d like as there isn’t a set limit to how many accounts you can link per email address. Twitch allows users to quickly and easily add multiple accounts to the same email address at any time.

It’s quite common today for Twitch users to have multiple Twitch accounts that they share with others or use different accounts for different things.

I’ll talk more about reasons for multiple accounts, as well as how to have multiple accounts on the same email below.

To begin, this is how you would go about adding multiple Twitch accounts to the same email.

How To Add Multiple Twitch Accounts Under The Same Email

To add multiple Twitch accounts to the same email, follow these steps:

It’s important to note that you may have to toggle on the “Enable Additional Account Creation” for every account you use with the same email. If you are having issues using the same email for another account, this may be the reason why.

I go into more detail in my Youtube video here if you are in need of more assistance. Just don’t mind my grandma glasses in the video.

Why Create Multiple Accounts on Twitch?

Many users want multiple Twitch accounts so they can use them for different purposes. For example, Twitch users may have one account they use for streaming and another account they use for viewing other streams.

For me personally, I use one account for streaming, one account for viewing, one account for Youtube content (I don’t use that one a lot though) and one account to test different things on Twitch with.

I have my main Twitch account for streaming that I have my settings all dialed in and ready to go, but if I want to test something new on Twitch, it would be a real pain to have to change all my settings and then change them again in order to stream.

It makes life much easier for me to just use different accounts for different purposes. I think this becomes especially true when you have amassed a decent sized following.

There may be times you just want to watch a stream in peace without people messaging you on Twitch or recognizing who you are if you want to chat it up on the stream. It must be nice just to relax sometimes.

There are obviously so many more reasons why you might want to have multiple Twitch accounts, but those are some of the big ones.

Now if you feel like you got a little carried away with the account stuff, here is how you would remove a Twitch account from an email.

How To Remove Twitch Accounts From An Email

To remove a Twitch account from an email:

Can You Share A Twitch Account?

Twitch does allow you to share certain aspects of your account with other people–with certain caveats. You can’t let other people log into your account using your password, but you can permit other Twitch users to stream their content using your account.

Account sharing is typically completely off-limits on most social media platforms, but not Twitch.

Although not in the usual sense, account sharing is quite common, especially amongst streamers in large, active communities who stream similar content together.

Twitch allows this kind of account sharing through hosting, giving permission to other users from your stream settings, and co-streaming.

Hosting and Host Mode

Host Mode is a feature where Twitch allows users to “host” other users’ live streams on their own channels. It essentially functions similarly to using an embedded video player from another website, although in this case, the content comes from the same website.

Keep in mind that you and the person you’re hosting won’t be able to stream simultaneously on the same account; only one live stream can take place at a time.

Twitch even has an auto-host feature in which you can select specific channels to host on your page while you’re offline. After three minutes of inactivity on your channel, a channel will be selected from your host list to broadcast. You can also override this by manually choosing a channel to broadcast.

For more info on auto-hosting, check out my Youtube video below.

Hosting is a great way to highlight another creator’s content and build a community together. You can form long-lasting relationships with other streamers and promote their content and have them promote yours in return by using the Host Mode feature.

Giving Permission to Other Users

Another way you can allow other users to stream from your channel is by simply giving them permission to do so from your settings.

To allow other users to stream content from your Twitch account, follow these steps:

My video below also shows you how to share a Twitch channel.

For this reason if you do choose to share a Twitch account, make sure that you both have similar interests and a similar vision for the stream.

For example, if one person is a family friendly streamer, and the other streamer has the mouth of a sailor, it doesn’t exactly mesh well together. Do you catch my drift? Choose your people wisely.

Co-Streaming and More

Another way Twitch allows users to share their accounts is through co-streaming. Co-streaming is quite similar to Host Mode in that it allows users to promote broadcasts on their own channel.

In this case, however, co-streaming is mainly intended for Twitch licensed content like conventions, gaming tournaments, TV shows, and more.

You can’t give away your password to another user and share your account in a literal sense. However, Twitch has several ways in which you can permit other users to share their channels’ content on your channel or vice versa.

These features are changing and evolving all the time to allow more interactivity and better communication on the platform.

Can You Have Multiple Twitch Affiliate/Partner Accounts?

You can have multiple Twitch Affiliate or Twitch Partner accounts as long as each accounts meets the criteria needed to reach Twitch Affiliate or Twitch Partner. This is not common, but it is allowed on Twitch.

Now you may be wondering why anybody would want multiple Affiliate or Partner accounts and I myself thought the same thing. But for streamers with bigger followings who do multiple things in live streaming it makes sense.

For example, if someone is a live streamer, but they are also an eSports commentator, they may want to use one channel for commentating on eSports and another one for doing their own personal streams.

This is just one example, but I am sure you could think of many more. But in most cases I would say it makes the most sense to have one channel and build your brand the best you can on that one channel rather than spreading yourself thin over multiple channels.

As always, if you have any questions or just want to hang with me, stop by my Twitch channel here and say what’s up!

Securing your Chat with Phone and Email Verification

Hate and harassment of any kind is unacceptable and prohibited on Twitch, whether it’s an offensive message, malicious follows, or the egregious “hate raid” attacks that have targeted marginalized creators over the past months. Curbing this type of behavior is, and will continue to be, a top priority for us. While we have tools available to help creators protect themselves, we know there will always be more to be done to stop hateful behavior, especially by motivated individuals and groups. Today, we’re updating our suite of moderation tools by adding phone-verified chat and expanding the settings for email verification, to help Creators better control their chat experience and improve security. This will be available to all Creators starting today, and can be accessed from your Creator Dashboard.

Phone verified chat gives Creators finer control over who can participate in chat, by allowing them to require some or all users to verify a phone number before chatting. Together with updated, more granular email verification settings, Creators will now be able to use email and phone verification in tandem to meet their specific needs.

We’ve spent many months building, testing and refining this tool, and while this is far from the last update on our roadmap to improve Creator safety, we’re optimistic about the impact it can have in making a safer Twitch.

How to Enable Verified Chat

Both Creators and Mods can set the verification requirements for a channel. Creators can access this setting from the Dashboard → Settings → Moderation and Mods can access it via Chat → “Manage Moderation Settings.” Phone and/or email verification can be required for:

You can also choose to exempt VIPs, Subscribers, and Moderators from verifying. Note that phone and email verification will be turned off by default until you decide to opt in.

Curbing Ban Evasion

We know there are many reasons someone may need to manage more than one account, so you can verify up to five accounts per phone number. That said, to help prevent ban evasion, if one phone-verified account is suspended site-wide, all accounts tied to that number will also be suspended site-wide. Users won’t be able to verify additional accounts using a phone number that is already tied to an actively suspended account.

At the channel-level, if one phone-verified or email-verified account is banned by a channel, all other accounts tied to that phone number or email will also be banned from chatting in that channel.

What It Means for Viewers

If a channel you’re watching has enabled phone or email verification, and you haven’t already verified a mobile phone number and/or email, you’ll be asked to verify when you attempt to chat. Unlike 2FA, which requires verification each time you sign in, you’ll only need to verify a mobile phone number and/or email once to be considered “verified,” and this verification will carry across all channels on Twitch. This is to reduce friction for viewers, and to help ensure that Creators can still grow their channels and interact with new viewers, without being adversely impacted simply because they want to protect themselves and their communities.

Why Now, and What’s Next

Building this tool was a major undertaking that spanned several months—and we know it’s felt like a long time to get to you. When we launch a new tool or feature, it’s essential that it works across devices and regions at scale from day one, which requires thoughtful and thorough planning, testing, and deployment. As you have time to test phone verified chat for yourselves and share feedback, we’ll keep monitoring the tool’s impact, and updating the FAQ below.

Our work to make Twitch safer will never be over, just as there’ll never be a single fix for harassment and hate online. But as long as toxic behavior can find ways into our communities, we must – and will – keep working on ways to make it harder to do so. From technology and tooling to policy and education, we’re committed to finding more and better ways to decrease harm, empower Creators, and share vital information on how users can stay safe. We’ll be launching a new channel-level ban evasion tool in the coming months, and look forward to sharing more.

If you have feedback about this feature or other thoughts on how we can make Twitch a safer place for all, please drop us a line on UserVoice. Your feedback plays a crucial role in developing new technologies, policies and tools to keep you safe.

FAQ

Can I use a landline or VOIP number?

No, you can’t. Phone verified chat relies on an SMS code to confirm that you are in possession of the phone number you say is yours, and landline numbers do not have this capability. It’s also very easy for bad actors to create multiple Voice over IP (VoIP) numbers, which would undermine the effectiveness of phone verification as a safety tool.

If I don’t have a mobile phone, does this mean I can’t participate in chat anymore?

If your account is not phone-verified, this will not prevent you from watching and enjoying a stream—but it does mean there may be some channels you are unable to chat in if they have phone-verified chat enabled. Creators can also choose to make exceptions to phone-verified chat for accounts of a certain age or following time, as well as VIPs, moderators, and subscribers.

Will this prevent malicious followbots from entering my channel?

Botting is a longstanding, internet-wide problem that will never have an 100% success rate – this added layer of account verification will certainly make it harder for malicious actors to spam-bot your chat en masse. No single tech solution will ever block bad actors’ behavior entirely, but this new hurdle will work within our constantly evolving suite of technologies and tooling, to slow them down considerably and reduce the number of channels they can impact. To make it even harder for bad actors to harass you through multiple accounts at once, we’ve designed the tool so that when one account tied to a verified phone number is channel-banned or suspended sitewide, all of the accounts are.

Will enabling this tool impact the discoverability or interactivity of my channel?

While users who aren’t phone verified may not be able to chat in your channel, this shouldn’t impact your discoverability, or the way that phone verified users can organically interact in chat. In fact, a key advantage to this tool is that it helps keep bad actors out of chat in the first place, so you won’t have to react to them with other measures that could have a bigger impact on your chat’s flow. We’ve also designed the tool so that depending on your preferences, not all users must be phone-verified to participate. You can control settings so that only accounts of a certain age, following time, or chat history must be phone verified, and you can also exempt specific groups, like VIPs, Subscribers, and moderators.

How will you keep my personal phone and email information safe?

The safety and privacy of your data are paramount. While no online security precautions or systems can ever be completely secure, Twitch uses a robust combination of managerial, technical, and physical measures to protect the integrity and security of your information. You can read more about the way we collect, use and protect the information you share on Twitch here.
