Are you lost in the jungle? Find out how to hang on until help arrives

A) Have you seen the TV series Lost? If you have, you’ll know that it’s about a group of people whose plane has crashed on a remote island. They seem to find it quite easy to find food, build shelters and protect themselves from storms in the thick jungle on the island. But suppose you were lost in the jungle – would it be easy for you to survive?

B) A jungle can be difficult to walk through! So, use a stick to part thick vegetation and to see and avoid any poisonous spiders or insects. Trekking in the jungle can be hot work. But if you are wearing long trousers and long sleeves, don’t be tempted to change into shorts and a T-shirt. You don’t want to get mosquito bites!

C) What can you eat when you’re lost in the jungle? Well, you might find some fruit to eat in a tropical forest, but how about some nice juicy creepy-crawlies as well? You might turn your nose up, but insects are an amazing source of protein and are low in fat. One warning, though! Avoid brightly coloured insects, which are usually poisonous.

D) Storms in the jungle are not uncommon so keep your eyes open for them. Some tropical forests get up to ten metres of rain in a year – about the height of a four-storey building – and mudslides are common, too. So, if you don’t want a mud bath, stay away from steep hillsides when you see dark thunder clouds!

E) After a tropical storm, there is always plenty of water to drink in the jungle. Perhaps you can drink some of the rainwater that you will find held in the cupped leaves of some plants. Or if you follow the tracks of animals you might find the stream they drink in. But use that box of matches you carry to light a fire and boil the water first. You want to kill any germs in it!

F) It’s not that difficult to build a shelter in the jungle so you can protect yourself from the weather and the animals! You can construct a tent using tree branches and sticks. More simply, if you have a plastic sheet and a rope with you, you can fix a makeshift tent between two tree trunks. At least you’ll have somewhere warm to sleep.

G) Never lose hope if you’re lost in the jungle. Hopefully, you will see a small aeroplane flying overhead and get your chance to signal for help. That piece of broken bottle you found should do the trick! Simply hold it up to the sun and move it so that sunlight reflects off it towards the plane. That should get the pilot’s attention!

The air can be too stuffy for you and the rain can cause mudslides. But the rain can be a source of drinking water if you don’t forget about hygienic rules. Don’t try to eat everything you see. Some fruits can be poisonous. During the trekking in the jungle, you may need to make a camp to rest. Be aware of jungle predators, snakes and poisonous insects and bugs. Make a campfire and don’t let it die out. The light of the fire can frighten away some nosy animals and snakes. But you must keep your eyes open anyway. As for me, I’m not keen on such activities. I think it’s a dubious pleasure to spend my free time in the jungle.

Но загадку не всегда можно перевести, если в ней есть игра слов, основанная, в частности, на многозначности. Многозначное слово может содержаться как в самой загадке, так и в отгадке. Вот пример:

Слово cool имеет значения: 1) прохладный, холодный, 2) клевый, крутой, прикольный. Если перевести «холодная музыка» или «клевая музыка», теряется игра слов, которая содержится в ответе.

Пройдите тест на уровень английского:

Здесь многозначное слово содержится в вопросе. Глагол to serve может значить: 1) подавать блюда — to serve meals, 2) обслуживать гостей — to serve guests. Из-за этой игры слов вопрос нельзя перевести, потому что в русском языке гостей не «подают».

Иногда загадку нельзя полноценно перевести из-за разнице в грамматике языков. Вот пример.

Здесь мы опять опустили кавычки, все-таки загадка — устный жанр. На первый взгляд кажется, что нужно угадать слово, состоящее не то из 4, не то из 3, иногда из 9 или 4, 5, 6 букв. Но если прислушаться, то это вопрос из разряда «верно\неверно», правильный ответ: «верно».

Потому что слово «what» состоит из 4 букв, «yet» из 3, «sometimes» из 9, «then» из 4, «rarely» из 6, а «never» из 5.
