Menu Planning

The menu is a listing of the items the food service establishment has for sale. The menu is an important component of food service operations. Without a menu the customers will not know what their choice is for dishes to order. The menu creates an image of the establishment. It should be in harmony with the type of the food service establishment. For example, fast-food or quick-service restaurants offer a limited number of menu items but they sell these items in large quantities. Their customers are served at a sales counter, that is why separate menus are not needed. Customers are familiar with the standardized menu and do not need its description. Fastfood restaurants simply post names and prices of their products near the sales counters.

On the other hand, a big restaurant would have an altogether different menu. First, the number of menu items would be much greater. The traditional table-service restaurant might have a menu as large as a book with detailed descriptions of its wide range of dishes. To draw attention to daily specials some restaurants find it useful to box these items on the menu or to write them on a chalkboard near the entrance.

The menu planning is organized on the basis of the available food products and kitchen staff. The service transfers the menu items from the kitchen staff to the customers. In order to properly serve customers, the servers should be ready to answer their questions. They should know what items are on the menu, the portion sizes offered, how the items are prepared. Service should also know the meaning of all terms used on the menu so they can explain them to any customers.

The menu is generally designed by the chef (head cook) of the restaurant. The structure of the menu is usually based on following courses:

When a chef designs a menu, he (she) usually starts with the main course and then plans the other courses. There are four basic types of menus:

1. A la carte menuallows the customer to choose dishes which are cooked to order and served to the guests.

2. Table d’hote menuoffers a limited choice of dishes. The guests have to take the whole meal consisting of three or four dishes and pay a fixed price.

3. Carte du jourmeans «card of the day» and the dishes of this menu are served on this day only.

4. Cycle menuis a number of menus, which are repeated in a certain period of time. It is usually used in hospitals, student and school canteens.

Am I Pregnant?

What are common symptoms of pregnancy?

Everyone experiences different symptoms of pregnancy and at different times. It’s important not to compare your pregnancy to someone else’s because pregnancy symptoms can vary so dramatically.

There are several signs of early pregnancy that you may or may not have. The most common symptoms include:

Remember, the only way to know for sure that you’re pregnant is to take a pregnancy test or have your healthcare provider perform an ultrasound.

What are some less common signs of early pregnancy?

There are some additional signs of early pregnancy that aren’t as common. Just like with the most common symptoms, these signs of pregnancy may or may not happen. It’s important to remember that everyone is different and experiences signs of pregnancy differently.

Less common signs of early pregnancy can include:

How early do pregnancy symptoms start?

It varies. Some people feel pregnant within a few days of conception, while other people don’t feel pregnant for weeks after a positive pregnancy test. Pregnancy symptoms vary between people and even between pregnancies.

Can you feel pregnant before you miss your period?

Yes, you can feel pregnant before you miss your period. Some people say they’ve felt pregnancy symptoms within a week of conception (about one week before a missed period).

Could I have the symptoms of early pregnancy and not be pregnant?

Many of the symptoms of early pregnancy overlap with other medical conditions, as well as your typical menstrual cycle. Premenstrual symptoms can be very similar to pregnancy symptoms. This can make it difficult to tell the difference. You can also miss a period and not be pregnant. This can happen when you lose or gain a lot of weight or are stressed. Breastfeeding can also cause your period to stop.

The best way to know you’re pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests are available at your local pharmacy or grocery store without a prescription.

How soon can I take a pregnancy test?

Pregnancy tests work by detecting a certain level of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) in your pee. You can take a pregnancy test as soon as you’ve missed your period. However, it’s best to wait at least one week after you’ve missed your period to get the most accurate results. While some tests claim to give you accurate results before a missed period, taking a test too soon can result in a false negative (the test says you aren’t pregnant, but you are).

Your healthcare provider can take a blood sample to test for pregnancy as early as one week before a missed period.

When should I call my doctor about a new pregnancy?

If you’ve missed your period and gotten a positive pregnancy test, your next step will be to call your healthcare provider for your first appointment. While scheduling, your provider may ask if you have already started taking a prenatal vitamin containing folic acid. Prenatal vitamins are important in early pregnancy because they help in the development of your baby’s neural tube. The neural tube will become your baby’s brain and spine. Many healthcare providers recommend that anyone who could become pregnant take folic acid at all times.

If you’re planning a pregnancy, a preconception appointment with your healthcare provider is a good place to start. A preconception appointment is especially important if you take medication for a chronic illness or have other medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or lupus.

During this appointment, your provider will discuss any current medical conditions, as well as your general health before pregnancy. This appointment is meant to get you into the best place for a new pregnancy.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Everyone experiences pregnancy differently. Things like missing your period, sore or tender breasts, feeling more tired and nausea (morning sickness) are common symptoms of early pregnancy. Some people have symptoms of pregnancy before they miss their period. Take an at-home pregnancy test if you think you might be pregnant. They’re available at most grocery stores and are highly accurate when used correctly. Call your healthcare provider if you get a positive result. Early prenatal care is important and ensures you and your unborn baby are healthy.

Calcium plays an important role in forming bones and teeth; helps with blood clotting, and muscle and nerve function.

We can find calcium in salmon, sardines, milk, cheese, yogurt, Chinese cabbage, kale, broccoli. Lack of calcium can lead to bone density issues, dental concerns, and muscular cramping. Overdosage of calcium can cause kidney stones; faulty kidney function.

Types of diets There are many different types of diets. Some, like a vegetarian diet, don’t include meats. Others, like the Mediterranean diet, describe a traditional way of eating of a specific region. And there are diets for people with certain health problems, such as diabetes. Many people follow specific diets to lose weight. Some of these diets are fad or crash diets that severely restrict calories or the types of food you are allowed to eat. These diets rarely lead to permanent weight loss and often don’t provide all of the nutrients your body needs. To lose weight, you need to use more calories than you eat. Portion control is the key. When trying to lose weight, you can still eat your favorite foods as long as you pay attention to the total number of calories that you eat.

Dear boys and girls, Hello! I’m Den. My surname is Ross. I’m from London. I’m 11. I’m a student at a secondary school. I would like to have a pen-friend from Russia. We can tell each other about our countries and traditions. My hobby is cooking and eating ice-cream. I would like to tell you about the English meals. The English have four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, tea (at 5 o’clock) and dinner or supper. In England lunch time is between 12 or 2, dinner or supper time is between 7 or 10. The English like porridge. They usually eat it for breakfast. They don’t eat too much bread. As for me, I have breakfast at 7 o’clock. I have breakfast at home. For breakfast I usually have porridge, some sausage, toasts and coffee with milk. I like sausage. But I don’t like black coffee. I would like to eat pizza for breakfast. Pizza is my favourite food. I’m a good eater. By the way I enjoy chocolate and sweets. I’m a sweet tooth. What about you? Please write soon and tell me about yourselves. Best wishes. Den.

Get ready! Ex.1 Before you read the text, look at the pictures above and talk about these questions. 1 What kinds of injuries do you know? 2 What are some different types of fractures?

Broken Bones Bone health is vital to a body’s general wellbeing. The skeletonprovides the body’s basic framework, while bone marrowis an important part of the immune system. Damaged bones must be treated carefully to avoid improper healing. This guide will help you identify fracturesso you can treat them accordingly. Stress fracturesrequire straightforward treatment. The bone is typically cracked rather than broken all the way through. This means no repositioning is necessary before the bone heals. Displacedfractures, on the other hand, are tricky. They require that the bone be reset before it can heal.Compoundfractures and impacted fractures, for example, require extensive repositioning so the bone heals in the right place. Comminutedfractures are especially complicated because the bone is split into several pieces. If you work with children, you will likely encounter greenstickfractures. These common fractures occur when young, soft bones are bent.

LESSON 19 Bleeding.

Get ready! Ex.1 Before you read the text, look at the picture and talk about these questions. 1 What kinds of bleeding do you know? 2 What is the first aid for bleeding? Could you know that was pregnant. Смотреть фото Could you know that was pregnant. Смотреть картинку Could you know that was pregnant. Картинка про Could you know that was pregnant. Фото Could you know that was pregnant

Bleeding is a process of loss of blood from the blood vessels. Severe or continuous bleeding may lead to death. Thus, the person doing first aid must try to control severe bleeding. An adult can lose 500 ml of blood not having any harm, but the loss of 300 ml might cause death in an infant. Bleeding can be external or internal. Bleeding may be from an artery, from a vein, from a capillary. First aid for bleeding is intended to stop the bleeding, prevent infection, and prevent shock. Apply direct pressure on the injury. Use a dressing, if available. If a dressing is not accessible, use a rag, towel, piece of clothing or your hand only. If bleeding continues, and you do not suspect a fracture, raise the wound above the level of the heart and carry on to apply direct pressure. If the bleeding isn’t controlled, the next step is to apply pressure at a pressure point. For wounds of the arms or hands, pressure points are situated on the inside of the wrist or on the inside of the upper arm. For wounds of the legs, the pressure tip is at the crease in the groin. Steps 1 and 2 should be sustained with use of the pressure points. The last step to control bleeding is to apply a pressure bandage over the injury. Note the difference between a dressing and a bandage. A dressing may be gauze square applied directly to a wound, while a bandage, such as roll gauze, is used to hold a dressing in place. After the bandage is in place, it is important to test the pulse to make sure circulation is not interrupted. When faced with the need to control major bleeding, it is not important to use a sterile dressing. Use whatever you have at hand and work quickly.

Ex.2 Read and translate the text. Then, mark the following statements as true (T) or false (F).

1.

Severe or continuous bleeding may lead to death.
