Sample Answer of Describe a House/Apartment That Someone You Know Lives In

Well, the majority of relatives live in the developed area in my country. Today I would like to talk about one of my relative’s houses. It isn’t any other than my uncle, in his family they are 4 members, my uncle-aunty and their one son and a daughter.

He lives in surat, which is the top fast-growing city in the world. He lives in an apartment, which is a 2BHK apartment. This is also an 11-floor building, and he lives on the 8 th floor.

In their home, he has 2 rooms, one living room, a kitchen and a balcony. Their child one uses both rooms is his son, and one is his daughter. A kitchen is also morden like having a platform. Moreover, on the balcony, they can see spectacular outside scenery because, in front of it, they have a park, as well as his daughter, also planted 4 to 4 plants.

I mostly live in the geographical location where this place is located. The apartment is in the centre of the city. Additionally, other provisions such as en elevator are also available. In future, after earnings, I would like to purchase this type of home.

Follow-ups Describe a House/Apartment That Someone You Know Lives In

Question 1 What kinds of homes are most popular in your country? Why is this?

Answer – Well, I think it is dependent upon location or area. If we look at the rural area, then owing to more space people, live in the house whereas, in the developed area, apartments are the major choice of citizens. Moreover, the financial situation is also a matter of buying a home.

Question 2 What do you think are the advantages of living in a house rather than an apartment?

Answer – The biggest advantage of living in the suburb is that people can build houses according to their own taste and more space. Those who avoid traffic congestion and prefer to avoid crowded side live in a house whereas in an apartment is cheap or affordable compared to a house.

Question 3 Do you think that everyone would like to live in a larger home? Why is that?

Answer – Well, I think the primary reasons behind it is that show-off and western influence. After seeing somewhere and showing relatives and friends some people like to buy a big house, the wealthy or financially capable family also prefers to live in a big home.

Question 4 How easy is it to find a place to live in your country?

Answer – I believe that it totally depends upon location. If a person is finding accommodation in urban areas, especially in metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangaluru, then it isn’t easy as pie as well as also expensive, whereas, in rural areas, they can find the place easily at a comfortable rate.

Question 5 Do you think it’s better to rent or to buy a place to live in? Why?

Answer – I think a personal financial situation olay a vital role to choose this option. If a person is a financial well, then for them, it is a better option to buy a house and live there while for others renting is good.

Question 6 Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their parents? Why is that?

Answer – I don’t think teenagers have to live alone or away from family despite study purposes. I personally believe that when a person starts earning money and is mature enough to handle the situation and manage that time, he or she can live alone although, after discussing with parents and older person.

A house/ apartment that someone you know lives in

Describe a house/ apartment that someone you know lives in.

— whose house/apartment this is
— where the house/apartment is
— what it looks like inside

and explain what you like or dislike about this person’s house/apartment.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

My maternal uncle lives in a large house in Noida, in India. The house is considered as one of the splendid edifices of the modern architecture in his locality.

Mr. Gautam Sudhir is my maternal uncle and works as a senior naval officer in the Indian Navy. He is a bit luxurious in nature and loves to live in a beautiful space. So, he has made the house with great care. The house is a one-storied building covering a large space. There is a large garden in front of the house with different attractive flower and fruit plants. Some of the plants are unavailable in the country. The small swimming pool has raised the beauty of the house. It also has a spacious roof and my uncle has separated the roof into two parts. He has his study in one part and the other part is gardened with flower plants he brought from different countries during his travel. The house has a grand look and my uncle is also proud of it.

My Uncle lives New Okhla Industrial Development Authority in India which is better known as Noida. It is located in Uttar Pradesh. This is an industrial city but now this is known most for the expensive and luxurious housing. Most of the houses in the city are extremely beautiful and contain all the modern elements. The city has been formed as the people related to the industrial activities, mostly the people of IT-related service, started living here. Besides, the city is decorated with plants while the roads are smoother than any other roads in the country. There are different sections of the city and the house is located in one corner of Noida. The connecting road to the house has been linked with the main road of the city and thus communication is easier despite the house been located at a corner of the city.

The inside of the house is beautifully decorated. The house has many rooms including three large bedrooms with some other smaller rooms to be used for several other purposes. The living space is extra large. Most of the furniture is made with the finest woods and proudly shows the choice of the house owner. There is an unusually large mirror in the living room and portrays the shadow of the visitors which is amazing, while the ceiling is decorated with a chandelier. The master bedroom is stunningly decorated with precious furniture and amenities. There is a king-size bed in the master bedroom with some essential furniture. The most important thing about the house is that it is centrally air-conditioned which has made living inside the house comfortable.

This is an adorable house indeed, and I like the swimming pool inside the boundary. The house is special in many senses and the most important thing is the design. The house is shaped simply with the modern architectural designs. The house also owns a gorgeous look and in night times, the house looks more beautiful when all the lights are on. Sometimes, the family members gossip on the side of the swimming pool during the moonlit nights. I also like to play cricket in the lawn but often we need to be careful about the cricket balls so that they do not cause any damage to the small flower plants. Sometimes, I read books and watch television on the rooftop study. Moreover, the electronic entrance is another important feature of the house. Whenever any vehicle tries to enter through the gate, the guard opens the gate electronically. Besides, the modern security system has made the entire house safe.

Model Answer 2:
My friend, John lives in a small apartment here in Paris. He loves to live alone and his apartment looks really nice. Thank you for the smart question and I will describe the apartment now.

John is the owner of this small apartment. It is around 600 square feet. He lives alone here though his parents live on the upper floor of the apartment building. The apartment was meant for commercial purposes but he has got the apartment for himself after lots of struggles with his parents. In fact, they did not want John to stay alone. But John had to undergo some struggles to get it.

The apartment building is located in the centre of the city of Paris and it was meant for a shop or any commercial space. In fact, John’s father is a local businessman and he planned the apartment in that way to sell or rent it. But John let not that happen. He is an extrovert and loves to meet with people. Sometimes, he also practices a musical instrument. Since the practice in his bedroom causes disturbance to his family environment, he needed a place of his own. Accordingly, he claimed the apartment and now is happy with that.

The apartment is beautiful. John has decorated that apartment using a professional interior designer. He has made a separate and small space for his instrument practice. Besides, his bedroom is also nicely decorated. The bedroom has a small bed with a set of medium-sized table and a chair. His tiny living space is also adoring. There are four seats altogether with a large bookshelf filled with numerous books and magazines. He also has applied some painting on the living space wall. As a result, the wall has got a different look. The small kitchen is complete with modern tools and cooking instruments. His computer is in his bedroom while a large television is set at the living space. Overall, John has decorated the inner of his apartment precisely in an attractive manner.

I like the apartment most for some reasons. First of all, it is soundproof. The external noise of the city life is completely absent inside. The inner decoration belongs to the top class. Everywhere you will see the impression of his aristocratic outlook. Moreover, the apartment is perfect for a single person and comes with the modern facilities. I also like the small space where John keeps his indoor plants. Whenever I go to visit John, it becomes difficult for me to come back leaving the apartment. Besides, the apartment is accessible from anywhere in the city. Communication with the apartment is easier. It is armed with modern communication systems like telephone, intercom and others. Everything is in order at the apartment and thus I like it most.

Part 3: Details discussion:

Q. What kinds of home are most popular in your country? Why is this?
In India, mostly the concrete made homes are popular among the ordinary citizens. The concrete made homes have gained popularity for several reasons. The first and the most important thing is that they are durable than any other types of homes. Once you have made a home with concrete, you can reside there for years. Usually, the homes made with concrete require less take care or repairing and last longer than the other homes made with tin sheet or woods. Besides, higher storied buildings could be built with concrete which is impossible with the other materials. Moreover, the homes are economic and the raw materials are available everywhere. So, most of the Indians prefers to make homes with concrete.

Q. What do you think are the advantages of living in a house rather than an apartment?
Well, definitely there are advantages of living in a house. The first and top most advantage is that one can live peacefully in a house than an apartment. When it is about living in an apartment, you are to abide by some rules and restrictions which may irritate you. Those rules may appear bar to your free movement in the apartment. Besides, there are some common uses of lifts and services which many of the people may not prefer. For instance, you cannot use the lift for your emergency as you are to get in a queue to ride on. But if you are at your own house, you do not need to ride on lifts as most of the houses are one-storied. Besides, you can decorate the house after your needs as there are ample spaces but in apartments, such spaces are unavailable for limited apartment sizes. So, I think living in a house is more advantageous than living in an apartment.

Q. Do you think that everyone would like to live in a larger home? Why is that?
Umm … I do not think that everyone would like living in a larger home as it depends on the mental state. People who have been grown up in open spaces and environments like rural areas usually like to live in larger homes and on the other hand, when people are born in cities, they want to live in smaller homes. They are habituated with the smaller environment and if they are taken to some larger space, they start feeling uncomfortable. So, apparently, people are not always be fitted with a larger home or larger environment. It depends on many things and mostly the early childhood environment influences the issue more than anything.

Finding a place to live:

Q. How easy is it to find a place to live in your country?
Well, in India, finding a place is not so difficult. Anyone could find a place to live. Most of the times, people hire places to live in and the people who are rich and wealthy, they usually buy their own living places. But the number of such people is limited and people prefer to hire places. The hiring process is interesting. In most of the cases, the hiring is done with different websites dealing with property selling or hiring. But there are some landlords who prefer to hang a ‘To-Let’ sign before the house to be hired. People who need places to live usually are in search of such signs or browse the websites.

Q. Do you think it’s better to rent or to buy a place to live in? Why?
This is a difficult question to reply. You know, if you want to buy a piece of land or want to buy a house, you have to spend lots of money. But everyone here is not that much wealthy to buy properties. So, it is better to hire a place than buying. Besides, hiring has some other benefits. If you buy a land, you cannot leave the area in cases like weak communication system or lack of municipal facilities. But if you are a tenant, you can leave the house in such cases and rent another one that fits your needs. In India, there are such troubles prevailing even today and so, I think it is better to rent than buy a living place.

Q. Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their parents? Why is that?
Umm … I do not agree on this point. There is no specific age for young adults or adults to stop living with their parents. In fact, the parents considered their children as small even if they become parents too. The best idea is to live with the parents and not to leave them for a while. If someone leaves the parents, they are deprived of the parental blessings. Besides, when someone is with the parents, s/ he will get some other benefits like there are no costs for the delicious foods prepared by mom. The foods are absolutely free. Moreover, it will save money for them in some specific cases. All the domestic works would be done on behalf of them which is the other benefit.

Topic: Describe a house/ apartment that someone you know lives in

Whose house/apartment this is?

Last week I visited my cousin’s house and it was incredible. They have recently renovated their home and it was looking nothing less than a dream house. The entire house was renovated according to Vastu.

Where the house/apartment is?

The apartment is in Vasantkunj West. As I entered the house through the big wooden door and a beautiful hallway with wall paintings it felt like I was in a 5-star hotel. As I went inside there was a living room on the left side and on the right, there was the drawing-room. The drawing room also has a separate entrance. Their Living room was huge, with a big L-shaped sofa with a big round center table, and a big T.V unit. The material used for the sofa cushioning was dark blue tone suede which gave the entire living room a royal feel. The T.V. unit was simple yet modern. They have hand-picked little elements from all over the world and have decorated the house with them. There was an area outside the living room with a sitting arrangement. There my cousin enjoys her morning tea or when her friends visit they hang out there.

What it looks like inside?

The stairs that go up to the first floor were wooden and the handrail was of glass which looked elegant. My cousin’s room was on the first floor. When I saw her room I was surprised because the room looked very different from how it used to be. It was exactly like the rooms we see on Pinterest. Beautiful bed, wardrobe, study table, a full-length mirror, and a lavish bathroom. All the other rooms were amazing too but if I had to pick my favorite I would choose my cousin’s room.

Whose house/apartment this is?

Last summer I went to my grandmother’s house which is in Shimla. They recently bought this house and it was the inauguration so I went with my family. I always loved going to my grandmother’s place but this time the excitement was on a different level.

Where the house/apartment is?

When they bought the house she sent me pictures of it. And I was mesmerized by its exterior and interior. It was a mixture of modern and traditional design. As it is situated on a hill the view it had was unbelievable. We reached Shimla in the morning and it was a 15-minute ride from the bus stop to my grandmother’s house. As we were on our way I could see the house from a km away. As we reached the house I ran to take the tour all by myself. And let me tell you the pictures did not do justice to the beauty of the house and the location the house was built at. As I entered the main gate there was a garden on both sides leaving a pathway in between leading to the entrance of the house. The ground floor has one living room, my grandmother’s room, guest room, kitchen, and dining area. And then the first floor has my parent’s room, my brother’s room, and my room.

What it looks like inside?

I was so excited to finally see what the room looks like in real life. I opened the door to my room and the next second I was jumping with excitement. It was very beautiful and was exactly like what I wanted. My room has a balcony with a small swing. And the view from my room was to die for. I was not expecting to get a separate room in my grandmother’s house but I was really happy to get one.

Whose house/apartment this is?

Last year, I went to New York to visit my friend’s sister. My friend has always told me amazing things about her sister’s apartment. It was a 2 BHK apartment in a 44 story building. When we reached her place I was very amazed to see such a beautiful building.

Where the house/apartment is?

It was exactly like how we see it in the movies. When we entered her house the lobby of her apartment was very spacious and was decorated with 2 big vases of orchids and other flowers. On the right wall, there were pictures of her family and friends. As we walked through the lobby it led us to the living room. Again it was a massive living room which is very rare to get in a city like New york. The living room has huge sliding glass windows with sheer curtains. Outside the window was a small balcony which my friend’s sister had decorated very nicely. There were several kinds of plantation which gave the balcony a very refreshing look. Her apartment has an open floor plan. The kitchen has a very minimalist look.

What it looks like inside?

It consists of all the latest cooking equipment. It also has an island with bar stools. The color theme of the entire house was neutral and warm. Her bedroom was stunning. The room that I stayed in was as beautiful as her bedroom and it has an attached bathroom. There was a big mirror where I took hundreds of pictures for my Instagram. The view from her apartment balcony was breathtaking. We sat there for hours and chatted. I have never seen such a beautiful apartment in my life.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a house/apartment that someone you know lives in.

and explain what you like or dislike about this person’s house/apartment.

Model Answer 1:
Since settling down in one of the affluent suburbs of my city, my cousin Eric had invited me many times to visit his place, but because of a rather busy schedule from my side, I just couldn’t entertain his request until very recently. In fact, I managed to visit his place only a few weeks ago, and I would like to take this opportunity to describe his house here.

Anyway, even though, I am calling it a “house”, it looks and feels more like a “luxury villa”, as far as I am concerned. The single building structure, or the actual residence, could be found there standing only on an area of 2000 square feet, but the empty space, surrounding the building, is probably as large as an average football stadium.

By the way, the whole area is surrounded by a 6 feet tall boundary with two entrances – one in the front and the other is at the back. There is a swimming pool just in front of the villa and a bit farther away from it, a beautiful garden can also be seen. I could also see at least 6 bay widows to ensure maximum light entering the house and 4 sculpted balconies around it, offering the villa a rather classy and elegant look. Inside the building, there are 4 large bedrooms, one kitchen and a huge living area, and all of them has a wooden floor on them. However, inside the rooms, which are conveniently located at a fair distance from each other in order to ensure maximum privacy, I didn’t really see many furniture, but the colour of its interior painting was simply stunningly beautiful.

Well, I really liked the villa, mainly because it was very spacious and it has all the elements of luxury. Besides, the villa is located at a safe distance from the main roads so that no noise of vehicles can be heard. Finally, I also like the fact that the villa was made with a very nice and uncommon design in an octagon shape.

Sample Answer 2: (House in Sheffield, England)
Well, at first, I was a bit flummoxed by this topic. I suppose that’s because it is easy to take for granted the sorts of accommodation people live in, and not really pause to think about it all that much. I have moved around a lot for work and so try not to get too attached to houses or flats I’ve rented as I am never sure how long I might be in them. The location of the accommodation is usually the most important thing for me when I’m choosing where I live, and so I don’t really tend to judge other people’s living situations as they too can be precarious. However, now you have given me the topic to talk about, I can think of one example of where a friend lives that immediately comes to mind. I’m going to tell you all about her house, where it is, what it’s like (as best I can) and the pros and cons of her choice of home.

So, this friend of mine is someone who I’ve known for years. She is married, and shares her home with her husband and two almost grown-up children. They are quite a sporty household, interested in lots of activities like walking, cycling, running and music. Both her sons play in student bands. My friend also runs her own business (mail-order cookies) from the basement of her home, so it’s quite a busy household!

The house is in Nether Edge, which is an established residential suburb in the south-west of the City of Sheffield, England. This is in colloquial terms quite a ‘posh’ area of Sheffield! It is a relatively affluent area with wide tree-lined streets and lots of little boutique shops, delicatessens and even its own well-established amateur theatre in the area. It has a real community feel, everyone there seems to know their neighbours and take an interest in what is going on on their doorstep. The houses tend to be Victorian, built of solid stone. The grandest houses have their own walled gardens and are packed with ‘original features’ like large windows, beautiful old fire-places, picture rails and wooden floorboards. Some of the houses have now been sub-divided into flats, and there are a few newer properties tucked away within the region. Generally, though, it’s a very pretty area of the city, with a mix of attractive terraced houses and some larger detached properties. It is certainly a very ‘desirable’ place to live, particularly for people with families, as it is safe, with a community feel and properties large enough to accommodate the biggest of families.

The house my friend lives in is a beautiful rambling Victorian home. It has many original fireplaces with black hearthstones and attractive tiles along the sides of the open fire grates. There are wooden floors a-plenty, high ceilings and the house goes up three floors high as well as down into the basement. She has converted this area into a lovely kitchen for her business on one side of the basement, the other side has racks of bikes carefully stored away in the dry. In the walled garden, she can keep a few chickens – which is a relatively rare privilege in what is almost a city location. Because the house is usually a hive of activity, the kitchen is always a warm and friendly place where you can sit at the large kitchen table and catch up on gossip over a cup of coffee. From the hallway, there is a large reception room where in winter you can snuggle up in front of a roaring open fire on one of the two squidgy sofas placed in there for guests. The house has great character, a little bit of faded grandeur perhaps, but it is really impressive.

What do I like about the property! Well, it’s gorgeous, I love the quirkiness of the Victorian property, the luxury of a real fire and the original features are stunning. It is a busy household where there is always something going on and a warm welcome too, it isn’t just the architecture of the building and the possessions within it that make it an attractive property, it is the family within it! In my dreams, I’d love to live in a property like this, however, the reality could be a bit different. The tall ceilings and large rooms are indeed gorgeous, but they aren’t very practical in an English winter. The property is hard to heat and the electricity bills must be huge. All those open-fires and so many stairs and rooms make it hard to keep clean. Old houses don’t tend to have much in the way of storage, so there is a constant battle to find ‘homes’ for the clutter of living. Still, I reckon that would be a small price to pay for such a lovely home, one day perhaps. In the meantime, I feel very lucky that my friend is so willing to welcome me and others to come and visit her there and enjoy it too. I’ve had some very happy times in that lovely home, but you know what, if she had to move I’m sure as she is so hospitable, I’d find I quickly became just as attached to her new home even if it was a complete contrast and a small, modern flat in a high rise block. It is people that make a home, not the bricks used to construct the walls that surround them!

Model Answer 3:
My younger sister, who is married to a doctor, lives in a large apartment and this is quite an elegant apartment in my opinion. For this cue card topic, I would like to talk about this apartment which is located in the northern part of the (…say the city name here…).

My sister’s name is Emmy and his husband is a renowned doctor. They bought this apartment 2 years ago and live there with their only son Christopher. The apartment is on the 3rd floor of a six-storied building which is located in the 2nd lane of the (… say the area name here…). It is only 20 minutes walking distance from my house. On average, I visit my nephew and sister twice in a month.

The whole apartment is more than 2600 square feet and has 4 bedrooms, one dining room. The verandahs are quite large and my sister had put several flower pots there which have enhanced the beauty of the whole apartment. The apartment is comparatively spacious and the while coloured indoor looks new to me. The rooms all have attached bathrooms with them and most of the furniture was bought from the most renowned and branded shops. My sister had an interior designing diploma and she has put every effort to make her own house look beautiful. From a neutral point of view, I would say she is a talented interior designer as she has been quite successful to make the interior of her own house impressive. The large wooden furniture, the modern and sophisticated design of most of the furniture and handpicked wall-frames gives a rich impression to a guest who visits this apartment.

I like this apartment because it has got a large space, unlike in many other apartments I have visited. The rooms give complete privacy to the house members as they are not adjacent to each other. The interior of the apartment is quite attractive. Moreover, my sister, as an interior designer has designed it perfectly. The apartment gives me the impression of beauty and comfort. For these reasons, I love this apartment.

More Ideas to talk about this Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card topic:

Topic: Describe the most polite person you have come across in your life.

1. The house belongs to Mr Samuel and this is located in the northeast corner of the main street of the locality I live in Thailand. The house has a grandeur look. The furniture and interior are decorated with modern design. In fact, I was greatly amazed at the inner look than the outer one. I like the house because it is beautiful and spacious. It has a very nice garden in front of the house and all the rooms are capacious. He is also planning to build a small swimming pool inside the house which would increase the attraction indeed.

2. Richard took me to his apartment last month. In fact, I went there to get some music CDs. The apartment is located near the 7central station in Paris. It was a small apartment – around 700 square feet. And the inner environment was not so good. I felt suffocated after entering the apartment. And I also could not like the apartment because it not well organized. My friend Richard is a not an organized person at all. So, he keeps the place untidy which caused irritation to me.

3. Living in a small apartment could be beneficial and Patrick has proved it. He lives in the opposite apartment of mine here in Japan. He is a foreign businessman struggling to settle in Japan. He has nicely decorated his apartment. In fact, he is all set to get married to his fiancé and so, decorated his apartment. The furniture and other necessaries are set in the right place. And I like the apartment for the outstanding colour combination. He has combined different shades together which makes it look wonderful.

4. Marry lives with her parents in a large house here in Germany. The house is located in a prime location in Munich. This is an extraordinary house that is not available in the present days. The inner part of the house is divided into separate sections and the number of rooms is more than I imagined. The house was built a long ago by her forefathers and still bears the testimony of the past days. I like the house for several reasons and the large and spacious corridors are one of them. There are ample spaces too for recreation in large yards.

5. Majority of the houses in India are smaller now and when I went to meet Mr Arvind at his house, I was disappointed to see the house condition. The house was located in a corner of the new street in Mumbai. It did not have a good look. In line with the outer part, the inner side was almost ruined. In fact, it needed a renovation. The inner part of the house was almost ruined and I was unable to stay there for longer times fearing the fall of the roof. Actually, I could not like the house from the beginning because of its too much shabby and almost broken outlook.

Model Answer:

I have visited the house of my company owner a few times, and I would be more than happy to describe his house since I can safely say that I have some good idea about it. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to talk about something on this interesting cue card topic.

The people around the CEO and owner of my company like to say that he is a person of great taste whether he is buying a luxury car or just wearing a hat. In other words, whatever he uses carries some true class and elegance with them, so naturally, the house, he lives in, is no exception.

The house, my big boss lives in, is conveniently located on the bank of a river. I am saying “conveniently” here because this house is located at such a perfect distance from the river that one can get the perfect and natural view of the river easily while also managing to enjoy the cool and gentle breeze from it.

Anyway, even though the house doesn’t sit on a large space, it looks rather big from inside because of a top-class architectural design. This house has a perfectly modern interior by any definition with its open floor plan and the windows that are stretching all the way from its floor to ceiling. This open floor plan allows this house to look really spacious and bright. Its living room is conveniently connected to areas such as the living room and kitchen. Painted with a rather relaxing slate colour, the interior of the house perfectly matches the colours of its furniture.

To conclude, there isn’t a single thing that I could dislike about this house. From the sizes and decoration of its rooms to choosing the ceramic tiles for its bathroom floors, everything looked to be so meticulously planned. Besides, the amount of natural light and air, which this house receives, is sure to energize and motivate people who would live there.
