Describe a restaurant that you enjoyed going to.

Food is the key element for every human being for the survival on the earth but not every food is that much tasty or applicable for all ages of people. Besides, preparation of the foods is also another issue for consideration. In my city, Mumbai, I have a favourite restaurant that offers different types of prepared food.
As I am a food-lover, I like to taste foods from different parts of the city and every weekend I start peeping at different restaurants. I taste all types of foods and finally I turn into a regular client for the best one. The restaurant named Zodiac Grill is located at the lobby level of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. It is located almost in the centre area of the city and thus easily accessible for all.
I liked the restaurant most for different reasons. The first and important cause is its decoration. The entire restaurant is decorated with zodiac signs (the sign also belongs to me) and the sitting arrangement was superb. Moreover, I was in love when I had the delicious smoked salmon before me. In other restaurants, I did not have the fish in a smoked form and the taste was excellent. Besides, the service was also fantastic. I had experienced delays and other sorts of problems in other places where I went to have my meals, but here I had no such troubles. Everything was in order and I was served with the necessary services even before asking for help. The best thing about the restaurant is its multi-national cuisine. The foods are truly superb!
When I first went to the restaurant, I ordered a tasting menu. It was a smoked salmon and caviar. The preparation of the foods took short moments than the regular hours and the serving method was praiseworthy too. I also ordered for tiger prawn and also took some vegetables too. When I ordered a chicken menu, I found that nothing could be compared to the item and it was prepared as the way that the meats were melting immediately I took them into my mouth.
Foods are the keys to our life. For a healthy life, we need to have foods and it should be tasty too. I have taken foods almost all of the restaurants in Mumbai but none of those could be compared to the foods I have had at the Zodiac Grill. When I entered the restaurant, I was welcomed and treated like a King of the state. When I ordered the items, they arrived within 15 minutes of the order placement which amazed me most. The surrounding decoration of the restaurant is adorable and the foods belong to the finest quality and the prices are reasonable. Thereby, I enjoyed eating at the restaurant.
Cue Card Answer 2:
I am a food-lover and most of the time spend my evening leisure hours in different restaurants in the city with my buddies. As a result, I have visited almost all the restaurants but I find the Diners’ Café as the best one.
The restaurant was located in the centre of the city and half an hour journey from my residence. Generally, people visited the restaurant as this was located at a prime location of the city and there was a bus stand adjacent to it as well. As a result, it always remained crowded. The key attractive matter for the restaurant was that it offered some of the most delicious foods of the city like tasty kebabs, parathas, biriyani, tikka, zarda, jelabi, mutton paya, chicken tandoori, dosa, daal chana, soft beverages, tea and coffee, and much more.
Foodie people have a sharp sense of smell and they could figure out event the ingredients used in the preparation of the meals. I am blessed with that extraordinary smelling power and most of the times I have found that the foods I took in other restaurants were prepared by wasted materials. Sometimes I had found that the foods were rotten as well. So, I made a list of restaurants to be avoided and added those on the list. But when I came here to participate in a party, I found the foods are up to the mark and the service was outstanding. Besides, there were a wide variety of foods here and at a reasonable price. Sitting arrangement inside the restaurant is also smart.
The restaurant provides almost all the common foods of the region and some of them are the most popular ones. The restaurant is opened from morning till late night and caters the needs of the customers all the time of the day. I went in the evening and had some foods like chicken tikka kebab with ruti and also enjoyed their breakfast. They sell tandoor rutis with nehari, beef, mutton paya and daal during breakfast while they also have some other types of dishes for breakfast like hotchpotch, chicken soups etc. I have not taken any lunch at the restaurant as I prefer to take lunch at home but they have some mouthwatering dishes for lunch. The fish fries are charming and they provide fresh fishes and other meats to the customers. I think the crowd increases in the evening and the rooftop of the restaurant gets filled with food aromas.
The saying goes that foods are the fuels for our body. If there is no or less fuel, the body will shut down, shortly. So, to provide the fuel, we need the best foods so that the body gets the right nutrients. At the same time, the foods should also be prepared in cleaner and healthy environment. the majority of the restaurants in the country have disgusting kitchen scenarios. But the kitchen of this particular restaurant is cleaner and the chefs are well equipped with tools and cooking materials. They know how to cook and thus the tastes turn absolutely exceptional. So, I enjoyed eating here and often come back to test the juicy kebabs!
Q. Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?
A. A celebration of something requires lots of preparations and the people who are to celebrate remains busy all the time of the celebration only for the preparation purposes. So, it is a very common issue that they cannot have the moments to enjoy the events. The most important thing of any celebration is its foods and those need to be prepared in huge amount which is almost impossible to make at home. Thereby, the idea to hold the events at restaurants has emerged. Restaurants are the places where foods are prepared for a large number of people and accommodate a notable number of guests at the same time which is, in fact, impossible at home. So, people are tending to go to restaurants during their celebration.
Q. Which are more popular in your country: fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants?
A. Currently, the countrymen are preferring foods out of home mostly because of their business and most of the time they are to remain out of the home. But they are health conscious and do not prefer taking foods at the fast food restaurants. Thereby, they take foods from the traditional restaurants. Moreover, the adult people are habituated with the traditional foods and they go to the traditional restaurants but a part of the young generations take foods from the fast food restaurants.
Q. Why do you think that is?
A. It happens mostly due to the business of the people and sometimes people want to change their tastes. Besides, people are at times influenced to take foods at any specific restaurants by the advertisements or recommendations of other people.
Q. Some people say that food in an expensive restaurant is always better than food in a cheap restaurant – would you agree?
A. It is an important fact that foods at restaurants are sometimes expensive but there are some cheap restaurants are available too. But there is a basic difference between the foods. The foods of the expensive restaurants are of the finest quality and the culinary is neat and clean. Moreover, the serving is also praiseworthy at those restaurants. But none of the facilities is available in the cheap restaurants and the foods are prepared in an unhealthy environment. So, it is imperative to take foods at a standard restaurant considering the food quality and environment even if you are charged more.
Producing Food:
Q. Do you think there will be a greater choice of food available in shops in the future, or will there be less choice?
A. Foods are available everywhere but all of the elements are not edible for all ages of people. However, to meet the needs of the growing population and diversified demand, nowadays different foods are invented and processed. The newly invented foods are yummy too. So, in near future, the range of foods will be increased and the shops will start selling different types of foods for the customers.
Q. What effects has modern technology had on the way food is produced?
A. Earlier, foods were produced at home using hands. But in the current days, there are different devices available to produce foods without the touch of hands. Moreover, the restaurants also use the tools to improve the food quality. People use to bake cakes using different cooking pots and placed them in cooking ovens, but now the electric oven has solved the complexities. Besides, much other technological advancement has been made in cooking and as a result, the foods are produced in a short time.
Q. How important is it for a country to be able to grow all the food it needs, without importing any from other countries?
A. Usually, a country cannot grow all the necessary food elements to meet the needs of its citizens for different reasons and the geographical feature is the prominent one. As a result, the state needs to import from the world market or from any specific country. It requires lots of time and investment and sometimes the imported foods do not belong to the desired quality and may also get damaged during transportation. So, if the country could grow all the foodstuff, it would be able to save money and labour, and the foods and grains will remain fresh and edible.

and explain why you enjoyed eating in this restaurant.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]
Sample Answer 1:
I do not dine in a restaurant very frequently. In fact, I prefer to eat homemade foods. However, there are some occasions when I prefer meeting people at a restaurant and like to taste the delicious menus the restaurants offer. One such restaurant is ‘Plaza de Capita Foods’ that I really like and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to talk about a great restaurant where I enjoyed going to.
I went to this restaurant a couple of weeks ago with my parents and siblings. The restaurant is situated in a large shopping mall in the city we live in and it is almost 30 minutes drive from our home. The restaurant is on the 18th floor and offers a nice open sky view.
It was my younger sister’s birthday and we planned prior to the occasion to celebrate this special day outside. As part of our whole day plan, we ate «dinner» at this restaurant. My father also liked the way the restaurant offers an excellent dining experience at a moderately cheaper price. So from our previsous experience, we decided to revisit this restaurant for this special occassion.
We ate the buffet and that included almost 40 items in total. I remember eating around 8-9 items while my parents ate far less that that. But my younger brother John enjoyed more than 20 items. Side note: He did not eat all the items. He just tasted many of them!
The common items we ate included fried rice, sandwiches, fried chicken, curry chicken, cheese and onion rolls, seafood platter, garlic bread, prawns and ice cream. The restaurant offers an excellent view as well as a nice decoration. It was a perfect place to enjoy our dinner and they offered a free birthday cake! I loved the way they served the foods and the overall price was reasonable. It was my younger sister’s birthday and the dinner could not have been better!
Sample Answer 2:
I am not a foodie but I do not miss the chances of having some delicious meals when I travel. In January last, I went to Yangon for some business purposes and had my meals at a restaurant named Le Planteur, a gorgeous restaurant. It was a nice experience for me.
This is a posh restaurant. Le Planteur is located at the University Avenue under Bahan Township in Yangon. This is a large fine restaurant in the city and comes with a great number of delicious food menus. Besides, the representation of the foods was another impressive aspect of this restaurant. Pricing is comparatively reasonable than the other contemporary restaurants in the city. It is accessible by all available means as it is located in the city centre. I took my lunch and supper in the restaurant during my stay in Yangon and I am highly glad about their service.
I am a sales manager for a multinational computer hardware manufacturer and I work mostly in Malaysia. The authority has opened a new branch in Yangon and I was sent from Malaysia to diagnose a test about the success rate of our products. So, it was a business trip for me. But I was also accompanied by some other colleagues of mine from a different department. In fact, we were seven in number altogether. The regional manager was with us in line with the other managers. Actually, the managers of various departments, including me, participated in the tour. The accommodation was good but the foods were great. I have a habit of doing some homework before moving to a new place. I try to learn about the best living arrangements, foods, convenient routes and other issues. Accordingly, I was asked to sort out a standard restaurant for dining purposes.
The restaurant offered a wide number of courses including lobsters, fish menus, desserts and more others. But I liked the traditional meal of Yangon most than any other things in the restaurants. Besides, I loved the dessert prepared with some local ingredients. On the other side, my other companions took some of the foreign dishes available in the restaurant. The bistro menu was the top quality dish that they highly praised. The restaurant also had the opportunity to take candlelight dinner in a romantic environment which was really appealing to us all. We wanted to have a candle light dinner but discarded the idea because that was unsuitable for us. Instead of such ideas, we concentrated on having the best quality meals in the restaurant and really enjoyed our foods.
This was a very good restaurant from many aspects. Firstly, it is located at a convenient location. The restaurant is accessible from any part of the city. This is a splendid restaurant considering the foods it offers to the visitors. There are a large collection of foods and you can have it based on your taste. Pricing is not an issue here. In fact, the food prices are far cheaper than the other restaurants while the service belongs to the top class. I also loved the interior decoration and seating arrangements. The restaurant authority is highly efficient and serves the foods shortly after ordereding. So, I was in love with the restaurant and took all of my meals excluding the breakfast in that place.
Part 3 – Two-way discussion:
Discussion Topic: Restaurants
Q. Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?
Q. Which are more popular in your country: fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants? Why do you think that is?
Q. Some people say that food in an expensive restaurant is always better than food in a cheap restaurant – would you agree?
Discussion Topic: Producing Food
Q. Do you think there will be a greater choice of food available in shops in the future, or will there be less choice?
Q. What effects has modern technology had on the way food is produced?
Q. How important is it for a country to be able to grow all the food it needs, without importing any from other countries?
Discussion Topic: Restaurants
Q. Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?
Answer: In my opinion, restaurants probably are one of the most popular public places, where all kinds of people can visit with the most ease. And it is probably this high level of “ease”, and the absence of an “uncomfortable feeling” for many of being stuck in a private place, that makes restaurants a perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or event. Besides, it is just not always possible to accommodate and serve so many guests together in a private place, like a home or office, because of the lack of logistic support and other things, which is usually not the case with restaurants. Finally, people often want to indulge themselves with the menus that are served at a restaurant to satisfy their taste buds and decide to celebrate an event at a restaurant.
Q. Which are more popular in your country: fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants? Why do you think that is?
Answer: There is no doubt that fastfood restaurants are gaining huge popularity steadily, but traditional restaurants are still, by far, the more popular food outlet of the two in our country. There could be a number of reasons that attribute to the popularity of the traditional restaurants, but I will just mention two of those reasons here: the first reason, of course, traditional foods, more often than not, are generally more healthy and tasty. The second reason is that the traditional foods, surprisingly in many cases, are cheaper than that of the fastfood restaurants.
Q. Some people say that food in an expensive restaurant is always better than food in a cheap restaurant – would you agree?
Answer: If the word “better” in the question here means that the foods at an expensive restaurant are always delicious and healthy, then I will just have to disagree with the substance of this question. After all, the quality of foods, be it served at an expensive restaurant or a cheap one, doesn’t depend on how much exactly is charged for the foods, but on how fresh or good the raw materials really are, and how they are cooked or prepared on a given day. From my experince, I can say that, several times, I have tasted far better food in a moderate restaurant while I could not enjoy my food in a highly expensive restaurant.
Discussion Topic: Producing Food
Q. Do you think there will be a greater choice of food available in shops in the future, or will there be less choice?
Answer: Well, I do think that markets and shops will serve a greater choice of foods in the future as the taste and preferences of people always keep changing, not only with regard to the foods, but also with many other things. Besides, foods are something which we have to have on a regular basis to survive, and sometimes, it just may not always be possible to grow or have the same kinds of foods or food grains because of the changes in the weather system or market trends. And so, it is only natural that people will try to find different types of foods to meet their demands. Finally, global trade agreements and technological development will make it possible to import foods, fruits, and grains from all around the world, giving consumers a much wider choice.
Q. What effects has modern technology had on the way food is produced?
Answer: Well, for better or worse, technology has changed the way we live and produce the things that we may need. In fact, it is because of the food engineering technologies today, like genetic modification of foods, that we have managed to produce a rather large quantity of foods within a short period of time. Besides, by using these modern technologies, things like food preservation, processing, packaging and distribution have always become relatively easy and effective as far as the issue of using safe foods is concerned.

Model Answer:
I think that not very many people in my city knew about “Chucky’s Place” as the restaurant was located a bit far away from the city centre. But, as for me, I liked going to this small place precisely because it was at a remote distance, having the same familiar faces visiting there almost every other day to try their favourite dishes. I liked visiting “Chucky’s Place” mostly to try my favourite ‘Mexican rice with roasted beans’ while trying some sweet delicacies with some “heavenly taste’ as well from time to time.
Having travelled for almost 15 minutes by beating the hectic city traffics in my little old car, when I finally managed to reach one of my most favourite restaurants ever in the countryside, surrounded by the gifts of beautiful nature, I knew that I already had defied the “odds” of dying sooner by living in a city environment that was becoming more and more polluted by every hour. And, when I actually had the “pleasure’ of eating the staple dish of my favourite food place, served with perfectly roasted Mexican beans, freshly-cooked steam rice, and some farm-fresh vegetable salad on the side, I knew that I could probably survive without eating any other meal for the rest of my life, of course, only to find out that I had to visit “my favourite restaurant” after a couple of days, again!
Apart from enjoying my favourite dishes, I loved eating at “Chucky’s Place” because of its clean and quiet atmosphere playing some of my favourite musical tunes in a very low volume unlike many other restaurants in the city. Besides, the staffs there were very much like some “family members” to me who would take great care in serving my favourite dishes just the way I preferred. And, hence I gave it the name “my family restaurant”! The restaurant was like a “food-magnet” to me as long as I worked and lived in that city.

Cue Card Sample Answer/Model Answer
Describe a restaurant you enjoyed going to
I’d like to describe a restaurant I enjoyed about a year ago. I was invited by a friend of mine to go for lunch at a local restaurant.
He actually chose the restaurant, not me, but it was very good. It wasn’t a cheap restaurant but it was one of the best that I’ve ever eaten in.
We really enjoyed going to that restaurant because everything was excellent, the service, the ambiance, the food, and obviously good company as well, so it was a perfect afternoon we spent together when we ate in this restaurant.
It’s a popular restaurant and is maybe about 5km outside of the city where we live.
The name of the restaurant is Carlo & Charlie’s and it’s a great place for family and friends to eat together.
They specialize in the type of food that most people like; simple, traditional but delicious dishes.
It was different from my favourite restaurant, which is more of a gourmet place that offers many up-market food choices.
Anyway, the restaurant my friend took me to was in the country and situated next to a lake with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside.
But it wasn’t difficult to get to it.
Like I said, it was actually my friend who chose the restaurant. I didn’t even know about it, although I had heard several people mention its name before and say it was popular.
It truly was a spectacular location, quite breathtaking in fact. Maybe that’s why so many people are enthusiastic about the place and flock there every weekend.
Not just for the delicious food they have, but because of the really amazing view too!
The food they offer is what would be classed as traditional food or ‘home cooking’ but it’s of a very high standard and the dishes are superb quality.
The menu is varied and includes something for everyone. There are traditional meat dishes, a seafood platter with different types of fish and they cater for vegetarians too with plenty of variety available on the menu for those who don’t want to eat meat or fish.
I decided to try one of the local salmon, which is supposedly caught from the lake in front of the restaurant.
My friend had a steak, he likes his red meat! The food was excellent; I couldn’t fault it for anything.
It was served quickly and was delicious. It’s a place I will definitely be recommending to other people now that I’ve been and tried it for myself.
The whole experience in the restaurant was very good, all the delicious food, the scenery and of course, having an opportunity to catch up with my friend and have a long talk.
So there were many reasons why this was a restaurant I enjoyed going to, and it was actually better than I thought it would be – which is always a nice surprise!
I would describe the entire restaurant as a perfect place to take your family for a great meal and enjoy eating something they are bound to love.
How would you answer these IELTS cue card questions?
How would you describe a restaurant?
What aspects of a restaurant you enjoyed stick in your mind the most? Which adjectives would you use to explain the experience, and how you felt.
How would you describe a good restaurant?
A good restaurant has fresh, high-quality ingredients and a talented chef who can turn these ingredients into something special. It’s also important that the waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and that the restaurant is clean and comfortable.
A great restaurant will also have a unique atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re someplace special. Whether it’s an upscale wine bar or a cozy bistro, the best restaurants know how to create an environment where diners can relax and enjoy their meal.
How do you talk to a restaurant?
The popular ways to talk to a restaurant include email, text, social media, or maybe a booking form on their website.
You can search for local restaurants or even search for a specific food in your local area easily.
Almost all restaurant websites have easy navigation options to book a table or make a reservation online in a couple of minutes.
You can also follow many restaurants on social media and see anything they post for special promos and offers.
That way you can get notifications of posts offering special deals for the best time to go or organize something like a special event for your friends or family at the restaurant.
You can also say which way you prefer to organize a night out at a restaurant. Booking by phone, online, email, etc.
How would you describe your favorite restaurant?
This is probably the most common example of the IELTS cue cards about restaurants.
It appears time and time again, almost every year.
You can talk about a restaurant and explain it in general terms: the furniture, lighting, food, atmosphere, music, etc.
But what makes it your favourite restaurant? Maybe it’s something like you love the different foods they serve, or they have a special meat or fish dish you can’t find anywhere else.
Or you enjoy the people that go to the restaurant. Or they let you take whatever you don’t finish home with you.
Maybe you used to go there as a child. Is that why it’s a special place for you?
Maybe the part of the city where the restaurant is located is amazingly beautiful at night.
You can also say something about the history of the restaurant if it is famous in the city or has an interesting story about the owners.
Is the owner a celebrity chef? A well-known personality in the community?
Or maybe it’s a family-run restaurant where you can eat homemade foods and has been there for generations and is part of the local history.
There are many IELTS speaking test cue cards on the topic of restaurants, so you should practice several possible sample answer options for the speaking test.
TIP: when you are speaking on the topic, include as much detail as possible in your answers and give reasons why you like/dislike something.

IELTS Speaking Test # 84
[The examiner asks the candidate about him/herself, his/her home, work or studies and other familiar topics.]
Newspapers and Magazines:
Q. Which magazines and newspapers do you read? [Why?]
A. I like to read any kind of newspapers and magazines which are published in the English language mainly because they help me improve my English skills. Of course, they also help me to keep myself updated with the latest news and views of the world around us, but that’s just secondary to me. BBC News, Daily Telegraph, CNN and USA Today are some of the newspapers I read regularly and thanks to the internet technology that I can read them from my computer. «Reader’s Digest», «Cosmopolitan» and «Computer World» are three magazines that are available in my city, and I often buy them from a local magazine store.
Q. What kinds of article are you most interested in? [Why?]
A. I like to read mostly those articles which discuss the latest business trends and activities of the corporate world in general as I am a post-graduate business student. These kinds of articles also help me understand how the top executives of some of the biggest companies in the world conduct themselves in their day to day affairs. Besides, I am also curious to read about technology, current affairs and some interesting real-life stories which are inspiring or humorous!
Q. Have you ever read a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language? [When/Why?]
A. If you are asking if I have ever read a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language other than English, then the answer is ‘no’ because I don’t know any other foreign language(s). However, English itself is a foreign language to me, and so, from that point of view, I do read newspapers and magazines in a foreign language.
Q. Do you think reading a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language is a good way to learn the language? [Why/Why not?]
A. Yes, I do strongly believe that reading a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language is a good way to learn that particular language as I and some of my friends are living proofs of that. In fact, whatever I have learned so far, as far as the English language is concerned, a very significant part of it has been achieved by reading English newspapers and magazines for years.

Restaurants:
Q. Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?
A. I would assume that people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something, mainly because a celebration is never complete without filling their stomachs with some good and tasty food. And, what other places are there on this earth other than the restaurants which can provide so many types of good food at the same time without burdening them with the troubles of cooking and cleaning! Besides, I also think that they just like to go to restaurants in the name of “celebration” probably because they like to have some changes in their daily eating habits.
Q. Which are more popular in your country: fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants? Why do you think that is?
A. I think that traditional restaurants in my country would still win the “popularity race”, not by very far though, when it comes to choosing a food place in which people can sit and enjoy their favourite food. It is like this because, in my humble opinion, food items, served at traditional restaurants, are relatively cheaper and tastier in most cases than those foods that are served at fast food restaurants. I would also say they prefer going to traditional restaurants because their food offers more nutritional values in comparison to those offered by fast food restaurants.
Producing food:
Q. Do you think there will be a greater choice of food available in shops in the future, or will there be less choice?
A. Yes, I do think that there will be greater choices of food available in shops in the future as different food products manufacturing companies are coming up with different kinds of food in order to keep up with the increasing demands of their customers. Besides, with the existing food engineering processes, food products manufacturing companies are managing to produce and prepare some food items throughout the year which used to be prepared only “seasonally” before. Thanks to technological advancement and globalisation, people nowadays want to taste different foreign food in their home country and restaurants, food producers and fast food shops are coming up with this to offer a variety of choices to the customers.
Q. What effects has modern technology had on the way food is produced?
A. Overall, I would say that modern technology has helped a great deal in increasing the production of food both on the fields and off the fields (in factories). Besides, with the help of modern technology, food production has become easier and less time-consuming. However, with genetic engineering processes, unfortunately, the food is becoming lesser and lesser “natural” for human consumption which just might not be good for our health.
Q. How important is it for a country to be able to grow all the food it needs, without importing any from other countries?
A. It is very important that a country is able to grow all the food it needs without importing anything from other countries because that will certainly make the country “self-reliant”. On top of that, if a country is indeed able to meet its own demands of food, then the chances are that it will be able to export some of its food crops to other countries and thus earn some valuable foreign currencies in order to improve its economy even further. But, of course, the reality is that it is almost impossible to become “self-dependent” on food because of weather conditions, types of cultivable lands and human-caused errors and limitations.
