I remember that when I was young, I was keen on watching the cartoon called “The many adventures of Winnie the Pooh”, so much that I kept pestering my father for the stuffed bear Winnie the Pooh.

Finally, my father gave me one as a present for my 6th birthday.

When I got this toy, I jumped for joy and even paid no attention to my other presents.

This stuffed bear was, incredibly, identical to the character in the cartoon I had watched.

He also had a short red shirt and was holding a jar of honey which was his favorite food.

Therefore, I felt as if he had come from the movie.

Since then, I considered him my closest friend and I couldn’t go anywhere without him, even when I went to sleep.

Every day, I talked with the bear and told him about my daily routine.

Unfortunately, I lost the bear at an amusement center, which made me cry for almost a week. At that time, I felt like I had lost a good friend who I could share everything with.

At present, whenever I watch this cartoon or see any photos of Winnie the Pooh, all the wonderful memories about him are brought back.

Thanks to the bear, I experienced a happy childhood.

They are good, but when children spend too much time on electronic games, they forget everything else and then these become negative.

Not any more. Gender differences are disappearing fast and boys and girls play with the same type of toys nowadays.

9. Which do you think is better, for children to play with toy alone or with other kids?

It is definitely better for children to play with other kids. They learn caring and sharing and many other social skills when they play with others.

Yes, definitely. They should encourage their children to share their toys with other children.

Today we have electronic toys, whereas earlier we had wooden toys and plastic toys.

What the future holds in store for us no one can tell, but as far as I can see, there will be more and more electronic gadgets in the future, which the children will play with as toys.

13. If you were going to give a present to a child, what would you give him?

I would give a child, a book as a gift. He may not like it at first, but it will shortly develop the habit of reading one day.

I believe that books are the best gifts. They remain with that person forever.

Pendants give all sorts of gifts to their children. They know the requirement of their children and give gifts accordingly.

Mostly parents give educational gifts, from which the child can learn something in a fun way.

No it is definitely not good to give a child too many presents. Children do not appreciate the
value of toys when they are given too many toys.

It also decreases their imagination and creativity. They also do not learn sharing with other children.

No I do not think this is good enough. The time been didn’t spend with the children is more important then the gifts they give them.

Part 2 — Sample Answer:

I loved the toys I could use to build something. I was never into toys such as action figures, and I rarely played with my model train set, but I loved Meccano and Lego.

I’ve always been a creative person, and these two toys helped me develop my creativity.

I think everyone knows about Lego. Fundamentally, you have blocks of different shapes that you can interlock together to build something. I think my Lego sets came with instructions about what to build. I probably discarded them and they were never read. I was more interested in building what I wanted rather than what was described in the booklet. I’d build all kinds of things, from towers to things I pretended were spaceships.

Meccano is less commonly known about, and I think it was only popular in the UK during the late 80s and possibly even early 90s. It’s similar to Lego in that you can make something, but instead of plastic blocks, you have strips of pre-drilled metal, all of different shapes, that you had to put together with nuts and bolts. The set came with little tools that were only really useful for this toy.

I don’t recall exactly what I made with Meccano, but I do remember the set I was given had electric motors and I think it was possible to build a little remote controlled car with it. I don’t think I was able to be as creative with Meccano as I was Lego because all the pieces more or less fit together in a prescribed way.

I loved playing with these toys because it taught me how to build things. It was a creative outlet. I think kids nowadays tend to put too much emphasis on watching movies and playing video games. While these things aren’t bad, they often aren’t really very creative, which is a shame.

I’m not sure what happened to all my Lego and Meccano, but I think that when I stopped playing with them my parents donated them to charity so someone else could benefit from them, rather than have them rot in a landfill site.

How do advertisements influence children?

I think advertisements have a particularly strong influence on children. They aren’t really able to assess whether a product is good for them or not, or whether a claim an ad makes is true, but as long as it looks fun they’re likely going to want it.

A lot of ads promote toys, cereal, and games, and these have been the kinds of ads that have been targeted at children for forever and a day. Even before TV and the internet, ads aimed at children would have appeared in magazines and other publications aimed at children.

I think the real intent isn’t to get children to buy something, as they rarely have money to spend, but to pressure parents into buying the toy, junk food, or game for their kid.

I’ve personally witnessed children having a temper tantrum in the grocery store because their dad wouldn’t buy them an unhealthy sugar- laden cereal. It’s likely they wanted it because of some ad they’d seen on TV or online.

Vocabulary and idioms for this answer:

Assess ( verb)
To judge or decide the amount, value, quality, or importance of something.

Example: Exams aren’t the only means of assessing a student’s ability.

Ad ( noun)
An informal form of advertisement. It’s commonly used because it has fewer syllables.

Example: I often prefer the ads on TV to the actual programs.

For forever and a day ( idiom)
If something lasts for forever and a day, it can mean a very long time, but not actually for forever.

Example: We’ve been driving for forever and a day and we’re still not there yet.

Aimed at ( phrasal verb)
To produce something for a particular purpose or for a particular group of people.

Example: The new photo editing software is being aimed at mobile application developers.

Temper tantrum ( noun)
A temper tantrum is a sudden period of uncontrolled anger, like a young child’s.

Example: Robert had a temper tantrum in the store because I wouldn’t buy him any chocolate.

Laden ( adjective)
If something is laden with something, there is a lot of something. It’s usually something unpleasant, like debt.

Example: The banks are laden with bad loans.

Should advertising aimed at children be prohibited?

I’m fairly conflicted about this. On the one hand there are quite a number of problems when it comes to advertising to children, but on the other hand cereal makers and toy manufacturers need a way to promote their products. Adults probably wouldn’t be receptive to these ads, and would likely mentally filter out an ad for a toy robot, but a kid wouldn’t. Toy makers aren’t going to be successful if they can’t advertise effectively.

I think advertisers need to be more responsible though. Perhaps they should be forced to adhere to a code of conduct that prevents them from advertising products that are likely going to have a negative impact, such as an excessively sugary cereal.

I see absolutely no downsides to ads aimed at children that promote healthy behaviors, however I generally feel that it’s the parents’ responsibility to teach these things, and not a commercial.

Conflicted ( adjective)
If you are conflicted about something, you’re unable to decide what your feelings or opinions are about something.

Example: Politicians are conflicted about how to deal with gambling.

On the one hand ( idiom)
It’s a phrase used when comparing two different facts or opposite ways of thinking about a situation. It’s sometimes used with the idiom on the other hand.

Example: On the one hand I’d like a job that pays more, but on the other hand I enjoy the work I’m doing at the moment.

Receptive ( adjective)
If you’re receptive, you’e willing to listen to an accept new ideas and suggestions.

Example: He wasn’t receptive to the idea of moving to a different country.

Filter out ( phrasal verb)
If you filter out something, you remove it because it’s not wanted.

Example: He filtered out much of what was being said because he wasn’t interested.

Adhere ( verb)
To adhere to something is to stick to something, or to carry out a plan without deviation.

Example: We will adhere to the plan and complete it on time.

Code of conduct ( noun)
A code of conduct is a set of rules about how to behave.

Example: The industry’s code of conduct says that doctors shouldn’t be given gifts in exchange for recommending a product.

Commercial ( noun)
A commercial is an advertisement that is broadcast on television or radio.

Example: There are too many commercials on TV nowadays.

Do you think parents should buy more toys for their kids or spend more time with them?

I think both are important. It’s important for a kid to bond with their parents and spend time with them, but it’s also important for them to have toys to play with.

I think some parents are so busy that they aren’t able to spend a lot of time with their kids. It’s possible some alleviate this guilt by buying the latest toy for their kid. This is a poor substitute for actual quality time, but I suppose at least the child doesn’t feel completely neglected.

Toys are really quite necessary though. A parent isn’t going to be able to spend all day every day playing with their child, and for those times they’re not available, toys can stave off boredom and keep the kid occupied for long stretches of time.

I think some toys can be educational too, in which case I see no problem with a parent buying lots of these toys, but in any event, they’re no substitute for actual one-on-one time with their parents.

To develop a close connection or strong relationship with someone is to bond with them.

Example: The hospital gives mothers no quiet private time in which to bond with their babies.

To make pain or problems less severe.

Neglected ( adjective)
If someone or something is neglected, they aren’t receiving enough care or attention.

All the time, without any change.

Example: I can’t sit around all day every day now that I’ve retired.

Stave off ( phrasal verb)
If you stave off something, you stop it from happening particularly if it’s a bad situation. It’s usually only temporary.

One-on-one ( adjective)
Something that happens between only two people.

Example: I had a one-on-one interview at that company I sent my resume to.

What’s the difference between toys kids played with in the past and the toys they play with now?

I think there’s one major difference: technology.

A lot of toys nowadays incorporate a lot of technology to make them more interactive and engaging. It’s common for toys today to require batteries or to be plugged in, but toys in the past used to be a lot simpler, and would have lacked the richness that toys today have.

I suppose the further back in time we go, the simpler and more basic toys were. They may have had a mechanical element to them, but it wouldn’t have been very sophisticated.

A lot of kids today play with video games. I see kids in the park playing video games on their phones while they hang out with friends, rather than play an actual game. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but they aren’t interacting with each other quite as well, nor are they getting as much physical exercise as kids in the past did.

Something that’s attractive, appealing, or delightful in a way that makes people like it.

Example: He’s a really engaging person.

Plugged in ( phrasal verb)
To connect a piece of equipment to an electricity supply or to another piece of equipment.

Example: I realized the reason the TV wasn’t working was because I hadn’t plugged it in.

Richness ( noun)
The quality of having a lot of something that is valuable or interesting.

Example: We were impressed by the richness of the town’s nightlife.

Element ( noun)
A basic part of something.

Example: The TV show had all the elements of a good drama.

Hang out ( phrasal verb)
If you spend a lot of time somewhere you are said to hang out there. You can also hang out with people too.

Example: I’ve been hanging out all day at the beach.

Three times a year the British Council changes many of the topics and questions they ask. Sometimes they decide to keep a topic for another four months, but oftentimes they decide to replace it. Model Answer 1:
If I remember correctly, in my early days as a child, I wasn’t exactly that much interested in playing with toys. Rather, I was interested more in running outside of the home or jumping with other kids. In fact, I had enjoyed the outdoors more than staying at home. But, my parents thought that I would rather spend more time at home, hence the idea of buying many toys for me.

And a special toy that my parents bought for me was a toy car, made of quality plastic, and it was battery-operated. However, when the toy car was initially handed to me, I didn’t really find much use of it nor was I that much interested to learn about how it worked. In fact, I left that toy alone for the first few days.

When I was a young child, my parents did not push me to do something or impose anything on me. But, when they found that I wasn’t playing with my toy, they started to show me how to play with it. They even taught me some tricks about getting the car to make some funny sounds. And, it was at that time when I felt a little interested in that plastic toy car. In fact, I really liked the funny sounds it was making. After that, I started to play with. And it was a multicoloured car, and it was about 6 inch in length. The toy had a little windshield and a driver seat also. It was a fast toy, and the longer I was playing with that car, the more I liked it.

Anyway, it was a special toy for me because I felt like it gave me the speed inside me that I was looking for. Besides, it was a very strong toy also because even though, I played very rough with it, it didn’t stop working or running. Finally, I consider the toy to be special also because it offered me an opportunity to spend some more quality time with my parents, which I cherish each and every day of my life.

Sample Answer 2:
I remember having many toys in my childhood and in different stages of my childhood I preferred different toys. But among them, the digital artboard was a very special one to me and I played with this special toy for more than 3-4 years as I recall.

This was a gift from my father on the occasion of my 5th or 6th birthday. It looked like a whiteboard which was approximately 14×10 inch in dimension. The screen was white and there were 5-6 buttons to operate the digital artboard. A digital pen or stylus type pen was attached to it for painting. This stylus could be placed on the right side of the board. The board was similar to a middle size notebook and was lightweight.

I became fascinated with the toy when I first saw it at a superstore. The seller described that I could draw pictures on this board, edit them, save them and reopen the saved pictures anytime I like. There was a built-in memory and it could store up to 10 thousand drawings. He also told that the pen tool makes the painting process easy, and it came with some templates that would help me draw some nice pictures.

At that time I was around 5 or 6 years old and the toy really mesmerised me. I had a hidden desire to own it one day. I wanted to complete different arts, and save them to show to others while also develop my painting skills. Since I had a passion for painting, I thought the toy would be perfect for me. I told my father about my fascination with this toy, and a few days later, he gave me this toy as my birthday gift. I was so speechless when I had it.

This toy was important to me because I have longed for it and that was a special gift from my father. I remember playing with it till I was 8 or 9 years old and I have painted lots of things on it. As a kid, no doubt, that was a fascinating and exciting toy for me.

Introduction :
Well, talking about childhood toys makes me nostalgic. In my perspective, childhood is the golden phase of one’s life, and memories related to it would always hold a special place. Plus what could be more precious than a childhood toy?

Since I was the apple of my family’s eyes, I was fortunate enough to have a myriad of toys, such as dolls, stuffed animals, building blocks, puzzles, handmade toys and many more. However, one toy which was close to my heart was a toy train, which my father gifted me on my 6th birthday.

What was the toy? and Who gave it to you?
I vividly remember my first train trip along with my parents, that time I saw an original train for the first time. I was awestruck by its enormous size, fascinating colour, and sound. The first word came from my mouth was, ” I wish if I could have something like this to play with at home”. Just after a couple of months, on my birthday morning, I saw a large gift-wrapped box in my room. I wanted to open it, but out of the blue, all my family members started to sing a birthday song.

Gauging my inquisitiveness, my dad asked me to unwrap it. I was over the moon to see my favourite toy. Immediately I went to my dad and gave him a huge hug. It looked exactly the miniature locomotive, with a cute red steam engine, 3-4 bogies along with some tracks parts. My dad helped me to assemble the train tracks and fix the train. I still remember the sound and lights of my toy train. I was extremely passionate about this battery-operated toy train and used to play now and then.

Although I was possessive about my belongings, I shared this toy with my siblings and buddies. It helped me to develop both my social and motor skills. At that time, we did not have the privilege to play with hi-fi electronic or battery-operated toys, which is readily available to contemporary generation kids.

Conclusion :
Only simple toys were our valuable possessions, and I had a whale of a time playing with this toy in my childhood. Moreover, I have a special bonding with this particular toy as it was the first thing my dad gave me without me asking for it, which enhanced both my creativity and imagination.

Introduction :
Well, talking about childhood toys makes me nostalgic. In my perspective, childhood is the golden phase of one’s life, and memories related to it would always hold a special place. Plus what could be more precious than a childhood toy?
Since I was the apple of my family’s eyes, I was fortunate enough to have a myriad of toys, such as dolls, stuffed animals, building blocks, puzzles, handmade toys and many more. However, one toy which was close to my heart was a toy train, which my father gifted me on my 6th birthday.
What was the toy? and Who gave it to you?
I vividly remember my first train trip along with my parents, that time I saw an original train for the first time. I was awestruck by its enormous size, fascinating colour, and sound. The first word came from my mouth was, ” I wish if I could have something like this to play with at home”. Just after a couple of months, on my birthday morning, I saw a large gift-wrapped box in my room. I wanted to open it, but out of the blue, all my family members started to sing a birthday song.
Gauging my inquisitiveness, my dad asked me to unwrap it. I was over the moon to see my favourite toy. Immediately I went to my dad and gave him a huge hug. It looked exactly the miniature locomotive, with a cute red steam engine, 3-4 bogies along with some tracks parts. My dad helped me to assemble the train tracks and fix the train. I still remember the sound and lights of my toy train. I was extremely passionate about this battery-operated toy train and used to play now and then.

I remember that when I was young, I was keen on watching the cartoon called “The many adventures of Winnie the Pooh”, so much that I kept pestering my father for the stuffed bear Winnie the Pooh. Finally, my father gave me one as a present for my 6th birthday. When I got this toy, I jumped for joy and even paid no attention to my other presents.

This stuffed bear was, incredibly, identical to the character in the cartoon I had watched. He also had a short red shirt and was holding a jar of honey which was his favorite food. Therefore, I felt as if he had come from the movie.

Since then, I considered him my closest friend and I couldn‟t go anywhere without him, even when I went to sleep. Every day, I talked with the bear and told him about my daily routine. Unfortunately, I lost the bear at an amusement center, which made me cry for almost a week. At that time, I felt like I had lost a good friend who I could share everything with. At present, whenever I watch this cartoon or see any photos of Winnie the Pooh, all the
wonderful memories about him are brought back. Thanks to the bear, I experienced a happy childhood.

Well, the first sentimental item that came to mind when I saw this topic was the stuffed animal named Marsupilami. This special toy was a birthday present. I can’t remember exactly how old I was, but I was probably about 5 or 6. This toy was important to me because I longed for it and it was a gift from my parents.

The toy was identical to the character in the cartoon I had watched. Therefore, I felt as if he had come from the movie. Marsupilami was a black-spotted yellow monkey-like creature with dog-like ears. The animals were characterized by an incredibly long, strong and flexible tail, used for almost any task.

As a kid, this was a fascinating and exciting toy for me. In the beginning, I did not allow any of my cousins and friends to touch Marsupilami. Marsupilami used to sit proudly on my bed each and every day, and every night he “slept” next to my pillow.

Thanks to the toy, I experienced a happy childhood. As the saying goes, “Teddy bears don’t need hearts as they are already stuffed with love.” This is also true for my beloved Marsupilami.
