Exercise 6. You have a new friend. In the evening during the supper you tell your family about your friend, his family, their hobbies. But a lot of what you know seems to be not very reliable and true-to-life, so you prefer to tell it from his words.
Exercise 7. Let’s play “the spoiled phone”. One of the students says something so quietly that only his two neighbors can hear him. But probably he said something very interesting? All the others want to know it, too; so they try to find out «What did he say?” — “He said that…” The neighbor, who rendered the message correctly and quicker than the other one, produces the next message, and so on.
Exercise 8. The game “Quotations”. It is not a secret that the problems of interrelationships between members of a family, the problem of generation gap, men’s hobbies and leisure time have worried people for centuries.
Please, remember what your favorite writers, poets and philosophers said about this. Do you agree with them?
Exercise 9. Let’s remember about the hobbies of different generations – your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Do you know what your grandmothers and grandfathers were fond of? Tell us about it.

Hey there! Вы уже что-то слышали о согласовании времен в английском, но так и не поняли с чем их согласовать? В этой статье мы расскажем о том, что такое согласование, когда оно используется, как не запутаться с временами и грамотно написать статью или эссе.

Мы говорим о прошлом чаще, чем кажется. Рассказать другу cool story, пересказать чьи-то слова, сослаться в эссе на другого автора, поговорить о прошлых выходных, каникулах или любых воспоминаниях — для всего этого нам нужно знать несколько простых правил согласования времен.
На русском у нас все легко, например, мы говорим: «Он думал, она изучает историю». В этом предложении и прошлое (думал), и настоящее (изучает).
Но в английском, если вы говорите о прошлом, то уже нельзя использовать прошедшее время в паре с настоящим или будущим.
He thought that she studied history. – Он думал, что она изучает (изучала) историю.
I thought you knew him. – Я думал, что ты знаешь (знал) его.
I thought I had to do everything by myself. – Я думал, что я должен (должен был) делать все в одиночку.
Сначала это непривычно, so let’s get used to it!
Общие правила согласования времен
Согласование времен используется в сложных предложениях, которые состоят из двух частей.
Главная часть — самостоятельная (например: он сказал).
Придаточная — часть, зависящая от главной, к которой мы можем задать вопрос (например: он сказал (что именно?), что он позвонит).
Если в главной части использовано одно из прошедших времен, нам нужно научиться менять время и в придаточной части (независимо от того, как это звучит на русском). Есть несколько вариантов, как оно может меняться.
Если действия в главной и придаточной частях произошли в одно и то же время, то обеих частях будет Past Simple.
Но иногда, действие в придаточной части может быть длительным. В таком случае, используем Past Continuous (was/were + глагол «-ing»).
I was (Past Simple) sure Kate was (Past Simple) busy that day. – Я был уверен, что Кейт (была) занята в тот день.
I came and saw (Past Simple) that my friends were playing (Past Continuous) rugby. – Я пришел и увидел, что мои друзья играли в регби.
Если действие в главном предложении случилось позже, чем действие в придаточном, то в последнем будет Past Perfect (had + глагол в 3-ей форме).
He said that he had finished his work. – Он сказал, что он закончил работу (закончил ее он перед тем, как сказать об этом).
Jack knew that Kate had not had time to write him a letter. – Джек знал, что у Кейт не было (до этого) времени написать ему письмо.
Предшествующее действие может быть продолжительным. В таком случае стоит использовать Past Perfect Continuous (had + been + глагол с окончанием –ing).
She said she had been playing the piano all day long. – Она сказала, что играла на фортепиано весь день (она долго играла до того, как сказать об этом).
He told his mom had been cooking from the early morning. – Он сказал, что его мама готовила на кухне с самого утра.
Не забывайте, что некоторые глаголы не могут употребляться во временах Continuous. С ними мы будем использовать Past Perfect.
Самые распространенные из них:
be – быть;
belong – принадлежать;
believe – верить;
know – знать;
feel – чувствовать;
love – любить;
want – хотеть.
He learnt that his classmate had loved him for many years. – Он узнал, что его одноклассница уже много лет влюблена в него.
Если действие в придаточной части случится после действия в главной, то будем использовать одно из времен группы Future in the Past (то же самое, что и Future Simple, только вместо «will» используем «would»).
I felt you would say this to me. – Я чувствовал, что ты скажешь мне это.
You said you would be waiting for me. – Ты сказал, что будешь ждать меня.
We didn’t expect we would have finished this project by the end of the week. – Мы не ожидали, что окончим проект к концу недели.
Когда согласование не нужно
I don’t think it will rain tomorrow. – Я не думаю, что завтра будет дождь.
Ann knows you are a nice guy. – Энн знает, что ты хороший парень.
Yesterday I bought a book which is believed to be a bestseller. – Вчера я купил книгу, которая считается бестселлером (определение).
John didn’t go to the party last night because he will have exams in two days. – Джон не пошел на вечеринку прошлым вечером, потому что через два дня у него будут экзамены (причина).
He studied too much last week, that’s why he still has a headache. – Он слишком много учился на прошлой неделе, вот почему у него до сих пор болит голова (результат).
Charles traveled more last year than he does this year. – Чарльз путешествовал в прошлом году больше, чем (он путшествует) в этом (сравнение).
The students knew that water consists of oxygen and hydrogen. – Студенты знали, что вода состоит из кислорода и водорода.
Согласование времен в статье или эссе
При написании научной работы, мы часто прибегаем к прошедшим временам, ссылаясь на исторические события, реалии или слова, написанные кем-то когда-то.
