I can not go a day without finding the That Girl aesthetic on my TikTok’s FYP or in my Pinterest feed. I realized over this past summer that I was a That Girl for the last two years of college. When I began my self love journey, I had a tight schedule, then it eventually progressed to eating better and being my most productive self.

I honestly love it. It suited me best. I adjusted my schedule to fit this schedule and my goals. I didn’t fit the perfect That Girl trend either. I woke up late and I was late to class no matter how early I woke up. I’m writing this blog post to bring a more relaxed, relatable version of this TikTok trend.

But as a former That Girl, let me give you tips on you can mimic the That Girl morning routine trend, but more laid-back and less intense:

What Is That Girl on TikTok?

First up, if you are completely lost or still don’t have a full grasp on the “That Girl” trend, let me tell you about this enticing trend. That Girl is basically a girl who has her life together (or pretends she does). She wakes up earlier than everyone else, stretch, workouts, journals, meditates, eats healthy, drinks water and green smoothies, schedules her day out, and gets things done. But she’s also all about the aesthetic. Always posting her breakfast, workouts, etc. on Instagram or any social media platform or maybe she doesn’t use any social media. She also finds time to schedule in self care. She’s essentially a walking Pinterest account.

Here is a collage to give you an idea:

What Does Becoming ‘That Girl’ Mean?

From what I grasp about this trend is that everyone tries to embody a girl who sticks to a routine and a healthy diet and lifestyle. Becoming that girl entails planning, waking up early, and prioritizing your health. The That Girl trend also emphasizes focusing on your wellbeing and goals.

What Do I Need To Become That Girl?

I have all things you need to become that girl in my latest blog post! It’s best to read it after reading this blog post and downloading my freebie!

How To Become That Girl in 2022

Step 1: Figure out if you can handle That Girl’s aesthetic & lifestyle.

One thing that I kinda dislike about this trend is 1.) everyone is romanticizing how easy it is and 2.) it’s purely aesthetics. Don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% a Pinterest girl and love having a schedule, but this trend really doesn’t mention how difficult it is to maintain a habit let alone a brand new schedule. I also was living this life before it was a trend and it took weeks to fully get used to.

I recommend those who are interested to figure out if you really want to change your lifestyle for YOU. Not to gain followers but to improve yourself. However, I do like how this trend encourages people to improve themselves and be productive but it’s not as easy as it looks.

If you are a beginner, take baby steps. Also, this trend also works better if you already have a daily schedule that is the same every day (e.g. working a 9 to 5 or having a class schedule that rarely changes.)

Step 2: Find abundance & figure out where you can start.

It may sound weird, but before you get started with you getting your aesthetic down, you need to see evaluate what you already have.

For example, if you want to do get better grades, you do not need to spend tons of money on a new laptop, notebooks, highlighters, etc. Look around and see what you already have. Be grateful you have it.

You might have healthy food in your fridge that you never thought about making into a healthy meal. For example, I never knew spinach can be used to make smoothies.

Another example: Since I now have a full-time job, I would set up a daily self care morning routine that benefits me now and use a few of the habits I had in my college That Girl routine, such as showering in the morning, doing beginner yoga, and eating breakfast.

Step 3: Brainstorm your schedule.

Luckily for you, I have created a freebie for you to plan out a That Girl Morning Routine Guide. Starting off your morning on the right foot is vital. The That Girl trend is all about routine, especially the morning routine.

Also in this freebie, I repeat that it’s okay that you don’t complete everything. It’s okay to wake up late and not do an activity. Most of the time, I woke up late and was late to class/work. Don’t be hard on yourself, especially at first. Ease yourself in a morning routine. If you hate waking up at 5:30 AM then don’t. I know I don’t anymore. I used to wake up at 9 AM now for my internship after graduating college. I wake up at 7:00 AM for my day job. It all depends on your needs.

Step 4: Start small, realistic goals.

Before you start changing everything in your life, begin small. Plan one day of activities or try to study with a Podomoro Timer. Find your most productive time of the day. This is why I recommend just starting with a morning routine first because it’s kinda easier to maintain (in my opinion), than a whole day schedule. This works also best for someone who already has a daily schedule and can handle a tight schedule.

Step 5: Eat healthier, balanced meals.

Before we begin, I must break this That Girl trend stereotype, I hate avocados (yes, boo me) and green smoothies are meh. This is coming from a girl who loves spinach.

Anyway, one thing about the That Girl trend is that these girls eat healthy. But I recommend slowly learning how to replace an unhealthy meal with a healthier one. They eat avocados for sure and smoothies. I also have seen salads, sushi, and proteins. Honestly, I recommend going to a dietitian or doctor to get a sense of what you can do to change your eating habits.

I have to admit that it’s not easy changing your diet. This was the hardest part for me because I was a broke college student and couldn’t afford just buying everything organic.

To give you all a realistic eating habit change:

I still have a ton of changes to still make to my diet. One of the biggest things I need to change for my health is that I am always tired. I love cookies and anything sweet. I also need to actually eat more because of my fast metabolism and I’m underweight. So I started eating more fruit and always had pretzels or tortilla chips near me for snacks and ate more protein such as chicken and protein bars. I also tried to cut out pizza because it always made me sleepy.

My ‘healthy” eating will be totally different from yours. It’s the effort of trying to eat healthier that counts, imo.

Step 6: Move and take care of your body.

Almost every That Girl video, I’ve seen is a girl working out or doing yoga. I recommend starting small and slow. Do not work out for a whole hour of a super hard cardio workout. Build a habit. Look up beginner workouts on YouTube and work your way up.

Some of my favorite workout YouTube channels are:

Bailey Brown: She had TONS of 5-10 minute workouts which I did almost every weekday. Her workouts are quick and effective.

Shona Vertue: I’m upset that I found her channel so late. She’s honestly one of the BEST yoga instructors on YouTube. Her routines are a little bit more advanced but totally effective, especially her back one.

Yoga With Adrienne: Adrienne is the G.O.A.T of YouTube Yoga. Her routines are great for beginners and I recommend anyone to check her out because she has a routine for everything.

Step 7: Start journaling and meditating.

Journaling and meditating were part of my That Girl morning routine. After I worked out, I meditated to clear my mind for the day. Then I’d write a gratitude list. At the beginning of my self love journey, I used to write down a whole page of things I liked about myself. I also did affirmations.

I really recommend doing either because it really helps with clearing your mind and affirmations really helped my confidence.

Step 8: Get a planner.

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

I was really that girl with a planner all throughout college. One of the main things about being That Girl is having a plan and getting a planner will help remind you.

I love Ban.do planners because they have stickers but not just because of that. I’ve had them since I was a junior in high school and still use it as a post-grad. I recommend this one because this planner includes 16 months of planning and enough space to write everything. You can also get 10% off one of their planners by signing up for their newsletter on your first purchase on their website.

Step 9: Dress the part & take care of your skin.

The way I learned that I was an accidental That Girl was realizing my style was similar to the trend. I wore fitness clothing a lot and also dress super comfortably. I mainly shop at Aerie because of their positive message about accepting yourself.

Makeup wise, I see most That Girl aesthetic photos and videos focused on light, natural makeup. But skincare is a huge part of this trend. Buy face masks and learn what works for your skin. Again, I recommend going to a professional if you can, such as a dermatologist, to help you out.

Personally, for me, I don’t have that clear skin you see everywhere on this trend. I have acne scars and hyperpigmentation. But I have a complete skincare routine and make sure to exfoliate and do a face mask once a week. My favorite face masks are by TonyMoly, especially their face sheet masks.

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

I also recommend getting this lemon exfoliator because it gets all the dead skin off your face. I love it. I use it every time I wipe my makeup off and wash my face.

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

But I also think part of the trend is that you honestly dress however you want. Have the confidence to wear whatever your little heart desires.

Step 10: Change your mindset and read a lot of uplifting, motivational quotes.

One thing you’ll realize with my That Girl Morning Routine Freebie is that I wake up listening to motivational speakers. I also listen to self-improvement podcasts while getting ready. This has honestly changed my mindset. I recommend finding someone who is around your age and is relatable with their advice. I also look up specific motivational speakers that some of my favorite YouTubers recommend.

My favorite motivational speakers/self-improvement YouTubers are:

Isabel Palacios: She’s really helped me a lot and I’ve been following her for a few years now.

Gary Vee: Since I work in social media, I listen to Gary Vee a lot. He honestly is known for his extreme hustle culture speeches BUT he has tons of advice for 20 years and teens that are more toned down. Also, he swears a lot that turns people away, btw. But he is great for practical optimism. He is not everyone’s cup of tea, but he has a few good videos.

BTS: Okay, I know they’re not Youtubers…but BTS’s songs and speeches helped me the most after graduating. Their 2020 speech was amazing because I was always rushing and felt like Jin’s & SUGA’s speech really helped me.

Step 11: Make self care a priority.

Making self-care a priority is one of the most important steps that you need in the That Girl routine. This step should have been number one. Self care is one of the biggest things I’m prioritizing right now in my life because college and job hunting wore me out. But lucky for you, this whole blog is dedicated to self care, lol.

Some That Girl ideas that you can try related to self care include:

Step 12: Be your full self.

Finally, to become that girl you should be yourself. This tip is one of the most important that I want to mention because I feel like a lot of people think that the That Girl trend means that you have to change your whole self. I think that you should take elements of this trend and implement them into your life. I know I did. I did not like green smoothies, lemon water, or fit into the typical That Girl look.

Being yourself is the main thing you should do. Even if you aren’t sure who you are, then journal about it. Learn about your likes or dislikes. Eat your favorite foods and f*ck a diet. Work out once a week and stretch or go to the gym. Learn how to love yourself. Most importantly, do what you like and try to create healthy habits. Improve yourself for you.

Final FAQ’s:

Is the That Girl trend toxic?

Honestly, it inherently can be. I honestly can see that anything can become toxic if we take it too far. The That Girl trend is cousins with the glo up trend (which I hate because of its superficiality) where people feel the need to change their entire selves. I believe that the That Girl trend works for certain people. I don’t recommend it to everyone. Half of my friends see my daily calendar and gasp. You have to be able to live a very structured, scheduled life. You have to plan everything and be okay with that. I would not recommend this trend to people who get easily overwhelmed with plans and do not like doing the same thing every day.

I know that some people say that it promotes diet culture and even Eurocentric beauty standards. It also can promote hustle culture and toxic productivity, which it can. Personally, I’ve never realized that until I saw a video a few weeks ago discussing it.

I really think that in my case, I didn’t force myself to eat anything; just try. If I didn’t want it, I didn’t do it. Most mornings I woke up late. I ate absolute garbage. I was late for almost every activity I planned. This is also a trend. It’ll fall out like others. Focus on you and your needs, goals, and improvement. It’s okay if you don’t want to do it.

What does a That Girl eat?

From my research, a That Girl is always eating some kind of vegetable or fruit and proteins. They also are hitting all the food groups. I also see that they drink a LOT OF water and tea, especially matcha tea. Again, I hate avocados and those damn green smoothies. Half the time I was eating a salad then some chicken nuggets. I try to eat healthier and tell myself that my effort is enough.

How to get the That Girl aesthetic?

The color green is common with this aesthetic. Wear athleisure wear and neutral colors. They also embrace wearing basics and pairing them with staple pieces. Read tons of self improvement books and other books. Also, have tons of mugs for tea and coffee.

Lifestyle

Long gone now are the days of everyone raiding stores for hydro flasks and seashell necklaces. Even drawing hearts on our faces and wearing chains while calling that style an “E-Girl” is out of trend. If you’ve been on TikTok at any point during the last few weeks, you might have noticed a new version of these trendy styles rising.

“That girl” has been circulating a lot of our feeds lately, so what exactly is “that girl”? Well, someone who is “that girl” is someone who prioritizes themselves in a good way! Spending time to work on themselves, eating foods that make them feel good, being productive, and working on bettering themselves… That is who “that girl” is. A lot of what is shown to us is all about the aesthetic, and while that’s a massive part of it, becoming “that girl” is more of a mindset than having the picture-perfect life.

What Does Being “THAT Girl” Look Like?

You become “that girl” in your own way— someone’s portrayal of becoming “that girl” will look very different to yours, or anybody else’s. Becoming “that girl” resembles wellness, making positive changes in your life, and pushing yourself every day to become a better person. “That girl” is all about wellness both physically and mentally. You don’t need to be the fittest girl in the world and eat the healthiest foods every day. It’s all about bettering yourself and doing those things all on your own time and for you only.

Make Healthy Habits

To start your “that girl” journey, you need to start by making healthy habits and thinking of what areas you want to better yourself in. “That girl” is seemingly a well-put-together and organized person. Start by thinking about how you can become her. Do you want to get in better shape for hot girl summer? Maybe you want to get better grades or just generally improve your well-being. If you’re one for hitting snooze, aim to get up earlier. Or if you’re always finding your space messy, spend some time cleaning! Make healthy habits for your well-being, like remembering to stay hydrated throughout the day and cutting down on sweet treats.

Set Realistic Goals

There’s nothing worse than setting a goal that you can’t reach or can’t complete because of how unrealistic it is. It’s easy for us to set goals based on an ultimate dream or whim. Aim to set frequent short-term goals that you can check off to feel success and pride instead of feeling guilty of not reaching them. “That girl” is always achieving what she puts her mind to. Aim to set a weekly or fortnightly goal that’s realistic and achievable, all while being a little challenging at the same time.

Fuel Your Body

“That girl” is not all about eating healthier foods. But eating foods that make you feel good, include fresh produce, and are meals that you enjoy eating are essential to becoming that girl. Foods with less processed fats and high sugar levels are a great start! Learn to cook meals from home and eat less takeout. Eating healthy doesn’t always mean salads and plain foods, so do some research and find foods that are good for your body while being delicious. Alternate every so often from a bag of chips to a platter of fruit enriched with nutrients that fuel and nourish the body.

Enrich Yourself With Power

Glowing skin and good food isn’t all what becoming “that girl” is about. You need to be constantly learning and evolving. That girl is always looking to learn and take in new information in all areas of her life. This may be in your school work, where you want to work on becoming more focused and productive. Or it could be that you want to learn more about certain personal aspects such as self-confidence. Enrich yourself in information by taking different classes, listening to powerful mentors, starting new podcasts, and reading more books. You’ll gain power from becoming a more knowledgeable version of yourself.

Move Your Body

Exercise— it’s either loved or hated by everyone. Whether you are someone who has a workout routine and frequently goes to the gym, or someone who neglects it, it’s equally important to fit it into our lives. It’s advised that you move your body for at least half an hour a day to stay well, so try to fit in some form of movement in your day-to-day life. “That girl” is always moving, productive and motivated. You don’t need exercise to lose weight unless that’s your goal, but do it because you want to and want to better yourself. Exercising releases endorphins that stimulate us to make ourselves happier, so add a simple walk or run around your neighborhood into your day.

Is There a Toxic Side to Being “That Girl”?

It’s talked about among a few that “that girl” is a toxic mindset. While it’s portrayed by many that it’s all about staying skinny and healthy, that’s not what it’s about. A toxic mindset is when you feel forced to do something and feel forced to look and appear a certain way, and the truth is, becoming that girl doesn’t look the same for everyone. You don’t have to have the intention of becoming perfect or skinnier, you just have to have the intention of bettering yourself. Bettering yourself doesn’t mean looking better, it means feeling better internally and feeling more content, happy and confident within yourself.

Take Care of Yourself

“That girl” is always on top of skincare and has glowing skin, so develop a skin-care routine if you don’t have one already. Do something nice for yourself as often as possible, such as changing up your hair or getting your nails done at a salon. Wear clothes that you love and make you feel good within yourself. Outfits that make you feel confident and happy should always be worn. When you’re taking care of yourself, you’re acknowledging self-love and prioritizing yourself, which on its own makes you “that girl” already.

My Experience With Trying to Become “That Girl”

I first saw this concept on TikTok and thought it was an amazing way to promote a better lifestyle, while being a motivational factor to make myself become a better person. I now enrich myself with different educational and influential podcasts, and set frequent goals. I aim to maintain a healthier lifestyle from eating to exercising, and I have made it a top priority to look after my mental and physical well-being.

While I’m not perfect (who is?), it’s made me strive to become a better version of myself each and every day. And that is what becoming “that girl” is all about.

How To Become That Girl in 2022

Tips On How To Become “That Girl” In 2022

This is one of the most important tips I can give on how to become that girl, and it’s because starting your day off early just opens the day wide up and makes it so that you have more time available during the absolute best and most productive parts of your day (for most people the most productive time of day is typically early on, like anytime before 2:00ish).

I’m not saying you have to wake up at 5 am every day, but obviously the earlier you can get up the better. Find your sweet spot – for me it’s usually waking up around 7 or 7:30 – and stick to getting up at that time every day, even weekends. Consistency is key here, and getting yourself into a good routine with your sleep and wake up time is important if you’re focusing on becoming that girl in 2022.

Follow me on Instagram for becoming “that girl” style reels and more:

This is super crucial because not only does working out help you look your best physically, but even more importantly it helps you feel your best which in turn improves your confidence and life outlook. If you’re interested in learning how to become “that girl” in 2022, then starting a regular workout routine would be a great place to start.

If you’re new to working out and aren’t sure what types of workouts you like yet, I would recommend trying to follow along with different videos on YouTube, or better yet if you can try taking a few classes at different studios in your area just to figure out what you like. Once you know what works best for you, you’re going to be excited about doing it and it will become something you can commit to consistently after you start becoming addicted to how it makes you feel!

Eating really healthy is so important if you’re trying to figure out how to become that girl! Clean, healthy plant based foods fuel your body and give it the energy it needs to take you through long days and get a ton of things accomplished. I find that plant based vegan foods are what make me feel the most energetic and ready to take on my day, whereas other types of foods can leave you feeling sluggish and lethargic instead.

Plant based foods naturally just have the lowest fat density and contain more healthy fats, fiber, and other key nutrients that your body thrives on – not to mention fruits and vegetables are some of the easiest things to digest and cause way fewer stomach issues!

If you want to learn how to become “that girl”, you need to make sure your room and apartment/home are free of clutter and that you’re keeping everything clean and neat. If you have a super clean and organized space, then you’ll have more mental clarity and a better ability to concentrate on your work and the tasks you have to do that day instead of being distracted by unnecessary clutter!

I love going through my apartment roughly once a season and just getting rid of old stuff I don’t want, like clothes, mail and random papers that pile up, and any other stuff I don’t need anymore. I always try to donate or sell clothes that are in good condition, and anything in my closet that might be stained or ripped I always recycle through a fabric recycling program like For Days! It helps the planet so much and I love that I can get rid of these old clothes and they’ll be turned into something new.

This one is definitely easier said than done, but if you’re trying to become that girl in 2022 you need to take amazing care of yourself and limit your stress. Take a candlelit bath, do some yoga, have a delicious meal and watch your favorite show, or do whatever feels like self care to you! And while it’s impossible to eliminate 100% of your stress, you can do some really easy things to significantly reduce it.

A small amount of stress is good in a way, because it motivates you to keep working and moving forward in life. But too much is obviously unhealthy and can start to ruin your skin and have all kinds of negative effects on your life. So, try to keep stress management on your mind at all times and take great care of yourself!

There are a couple of different journalling methods I recommend using if you want to know how to become that girl in 2022, and the first one is just your basic “planner” style journalling where you keep on top of writing in a day planner – things like your appointments, meetings and school or work related stuff as well as little to do lists if your planner has enough space for that.

The second method would be gratitude journalling, which is basically the act of writing down a couple of things in your life that you’re grateful for every single day. The purpose of this exercise is to improve your mindset, because what we focus on is what we tend to attract more of.

For example, if your day gets off to a bad start, it’s much more likely that you’re going to notice more and more things that make your mood worse, when there might be so many good things happening too that you’re just missing because you’re focusing more on the bad. Gratitude journalling is a way to bring the good in your life to the front of your mind so that you focus more on the good and therefore attract more of it into your life!

How to become that girl, pro tip: going along with the apartment decluttering tip further up, you also want to make sure that your inbox isn’t piling up full of unread emails. And if you’re like me, you might also have thousands of pictures and videos in your phone and a bunch of duplicates of the same things that need to be deleted.

Go through and unsubscribe from all of the email lists of brands that you never even open and delete your old unread emails as well. Then go and spend 15 or 20 minutes deleting stuff from your phone that doesn’t uplift you or you don’t need anymore. Because if you want to know how to become “that girl”, keeping an organized phone and email inbox is another really crucial step to take!

How To Become «That Girl» | The ULTIMATE Guide

Mara Van Geffen

Is there a definition?

Honestly, we need answers and tbh there doesn’t seem to be a straight answer. It’s a concept which you can interpret in any way you want, and we kind of love the idea of it.

Common elements focus on waking up early and seizing the day from the moment your eyes open.

If you want to hop on the trend, we’ve got the ultimate “that girl” guide coming your way (don’t say we don’t treat you…).

We’ve made it so they’re healthy habits to implement into your daily life, and not impossible! Meaning you don’t have to be living in a high rise, NY apartment with a well-off job to succeed, you can be as normal as the everyday gal and still absolutely smash it.

1. Revolutionise Your Diet

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

A healthy outside ALWAYS starts with a healthy inside!! That’s why we feel to become “that girl”, you need to begin by revolutionising your diet and swapping out the takeaways for nutritious treats.

Find foods which inspire you to cook from scratch, and try to eat a full and balanced diet every single day.

Within typical Tiktoks, you’ll frequently see Avocados on Sourdough bread and Baked Oats with toppings galore. It’s rare for plain foods to make an appearance, as aesthetics is important to those who want to be “that girl”.

2. Focus On Your Morning Routine

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

Morning routines are crucial if you’re attempting to become “that girl”.

Waking up early will give you extra time within the day to do things for you, which otherwise you wouldn’t have had if you’d have stayed sleeping in bed.

They say from the moment your alarm goes off, you’re to get out of bed straight away (so, stop repressing the snooze button!!).

Test it for a week and try waking up an hour earlier than you usually would. Use that hour to do things for you, such as baking breakfast, putting makeup on, making your bed or even reading your favourite book.

3. Keep Fit

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

Implement fitness into your daily routine and we promise you’ll see a positive change in your mindset.

Moving your body and getting exercise outside is super important and it should be a daily part of your life anyway without this trend. But, don’t force yourself to do anything you really don’t want to do!

If you don’t like the gym, don’t go. Take yourself on a long walk instead and get those steps in. It still fits in with the aesthetic you’re trying to achieve, so what have you got to lose?

4. Organisation Is Key

Keeping organised with planners and to do lists will ultimately help you plan your days easier and achieve this perfect lifestyle. Being more productive is never a bad thing, and we urge you to invest in diaries, pens and utensils to aid you in becoming a better version of yourself!

5. Drink Water

Stay hydrated and drink as much water as you can! Well, not too much, but around 3-4 litres a day is the perfect amount.

Keeping hydrated has so many short and long term benefits which you will thank yourself for in the future.

If you fancy it, why not get yourself an aesthetic bottle to make it a little easier to drink? There’s some adorable ones here!

6. Educate Yourself

Invest your free time in educating yourself, maybe through a new skill or reading a book.

7. Self Care Is Super Important

Spend time laying that face mask on, waxing and tinting your eyebrows, and lathering fake tan on. You deserve it, and making the most of these small moments will enrich your life one step at a time.

The “that girl” guide is all about investing in yourself, and self care can have a positive effect on how you react to other things in your life. If you feel good on the outside, you’re going to feel better on the inside and have a more positive outlook on life.

8. Journaling

How to become that girl. Смотреть фото How to become that girl. Смотреть картинку How to become that girl. Картинка про How to become that girl. Фото How to become that girl

Journaling can help you organise and achieve the small goals you’ve set for yourself. It’s simply writing down your thoughts to understand them more clearly and if you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal can be a great idea.

If you don’t feel like journaling is for you, why not spend five minutes in the morning, and 5 minutes in the evening just doodling down some notes of gratitude and reflecting on the day? Then you don’t have to feel like an artist and are still taking care of yourself.

How The “That Girl” Trend Can Have A Negative Impact?

There’s nothing wrong with trying to improve your life with healthy habits, but the popular Tiktok trend has given girls an idealistic life which isn’t the everyday reality. These girls may look like they have the picture perfect life, but this most likely ISN’T the case. They don’t bother writing, or even videoing the bad times, which can allude to the idea that they never have any. Seriously, we can’t think of one person who hasn’t had bumps in the road and lows in life – it’s natural!

Being a girl in the day and age of social media, it can be super difficult to not compare your life to anyone else’s and this is the perfect example of where it can be an issue. If you give yourself these unrealistic expectations of being “that girl”, you’re going to get down when you don’t achieve it.

And that’s a wrap on becoming “that girl” guide! What do you think? Let us know on our socials if there’s any ideas we’ve mentioned that you’re going to implement into your life. We can’t wait to test them out.

I want to be ‘That Girl’.
How you can successfully turn body envy into action.

Ah, That Girl. She’s got a defined waist, hair that looks styled even when it’s not, and a noticeable lack of kid throw-up on her sweater.

After coaching thousands of clients, I can confidently say: Wanting to be That Girl can either propel you toward your goal… or completely paralyze you. Here’s what to do about it.

Ever look at someone, and think, “wow, she’s really got it all together”?

Maybe you’ve wondered what her secret is.

Maybe you’ve also wondered why you can’t seem to get things together the same way.

Your desire to be “That Girl” can either propel you toward your goal… or completely paralyze you.

In this article, I’m going to tell you the truth about “That Girl.” (Hint: it’s not something you’ll find on her super-polished Facebook profile or her gorgeous #nofilter Instagram feed.)

And I’ll show you how to use this kind of comparison to work for you, instead of against you.

Before digging in, however, I wanted to let you know that soon we’ll be opening up spots in our Precision Nutrition Coaching program.

You see, twice a year we work with small groups of men and women hoping to look better, feel better, and gain control over their health and fitness.

Over the course of 12 months together, we help them get into the best shape of their lives… and stay that way for good.

For a sneak peek at the amazing things we’ve helped our clients accomplish, check out this short video:

Meet some of the people whose bodies — and lives — have been changed by Precision Nutrition Coaching.

During the Precision Nutrition Coaching program we’ll guide you through important, permanent improvements in your eating, exercise, body, and health.

You’ll lose the weight (and body fat) you haven’t been able to shed for years. You’ll build physical strength and gain confidence. And you’ll end up feeling like the healthiest, strongest, fittest version of yourself.

In other words, we’ll help you become your own version of “That Girl”.

Which brings us back to today’s article…

So there’s this woman. She’s awesome. Inspiring, even.

She looks fabulous, confident, and comfortable in her own skin. She’s into Pilates or running or Crossfit or kale juice or something else that keeps her full of energy.

She rocks Lululemon pants and skinny jeans. Yes, even after three angelic children.

She totally, completely has it all together. And she’s the number one request from women who join Precision Nutrition Coaching:

I want to be That Girl.

We all know That Girl.

That Girl is a lawyer, or a neurosurgeon, or an international diplomat, or perhaps a stay-at-home mother. Whatever she does, she excels at it and is fulfilled.

You can find her on social media using hashtags like #honored and #grateful and #blessed — and she means it.

“Make me look like That Girl.”

Twenty-plus years ago, That Girl was Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2.

These days, she’s Jessica Alba or Eva Mendes or Kendall Jenner on Instagram.

And, on the home front, you might have seen That Girl at school drop-off, at the grocery store, or dominating the running trails.

(Of course, while she’s dropping off three well-groomed offspring, you’re shoving aside banana peels and empty soda cups to make room for your kid’s dog-hair-encrusted car seat. And you’re wearing your husband’s track pants with baby spit-up because they’re the only things that fit you right now.)

You can’t help but think…

Why does she have it all together, when I so clearly do not?

Actually, That Girl doesn’t have it all together. I know, because I coached her.

At a certain point, no matter who you are, coaching requires you to get a little bit honest and a little bit vulnerable. Yes, I’ve seen it all.

I’ve had women stand before me to get measurements taken, half-naked and feeling exposed in their underwear, without the soft lighting and baby oil used in photo shoots.

I’ve seen a lot of tears, even from the most rock-solid, wall-of-muscle types. (Think That Girl wouldn’t collapse into a ball of sobs on the floor of a public bathroom? Think again.)

I’ve heard it all. I’ve heard about the secret Oreo and Nutella binges, about the even-more-secret eating disorders, about the booze and the sneaky cigarettes and the injuries and the heartbreak and the crazy boss and the reasons why your mom always liked your sister best and why it feels like you can never measure up.

It doesn’t matter what size you are, whether you have abs, whether you know how to apply false eyelashes, or whether you’ve ever lifted a barbell in your life.

I’ve had your emotional throw-up all over me.

And it’s OK. It’s great, actually.

Really. You know why? Because…

“That Girl” doesn’t exist.

It’s easy to believe that Everyone Else is doing so much better than you.

After all, everybody’s social media feed tells you something different. Between Instagram and the fitness magazines and the “best booty beach body bikini bonanza” campaigns, it can seem like Everyone Else can handle their lives.

Everyone Else is losing weight or gaining muscle or getting fitter so much faster and more effortlessly than you.

Everyone Else has their shit together. Everyone Else has everything you don’t.

It feels like you’re the only person in the world with your problems. That it’s much harder for you than for everyone else.

But the truth is:

There is no Everyone Else.

No one can escape the reality of family and deadlines and the thermodynamic laws that govern metabolism.

Not Jessica Alba, not Eva Mendes, not anyone.

That Girl doesn’t exist the way you think she does.

We are all imperfect, wonderful, messy, very-much-human beings with hopes and fears and desires and neuroses and jobs and lives and kids and dogs or cats and family demands and toilets that need unclogging and lines-becoming-wrinkles and hangnails and alarms that go off too early and a love of chocolate-chip cookies… and all the rest of reality.

None of it gets easier with make-believe.

It’s only once we’re able to be honest about what’s going on in their lives — to stop worrying about being the only person who isn’t fit enough, smart enough, together enough, getting enough things done in a day, a good enough mom / wife / worker, whatever — that we can start becoming our own versions of That Girl.

Want to know how it’s done? Check out these 6 steps.

Step 1.
Reconsider your expectations.

I have good news for you, and I have bad news.

The good news is, if you’re looking to get into reasonable, moderate shape — or even pretty good shape — you are completely capable of doing so.

You can regain control of your life and your habits. You can overcome emotional eating issues. You can take care of others while still taking care of yourself. In fact, you can even build a body that you love, and are proud of.

I know. I know. That body-love probably seems crazy and impossible right now. But with some small, consistent changes, and support, these things are totally doable.

On the other hand, getting cover-model lean and ripped (especially if you want it to happen overnight and especially if you want it to last longer than 24 hours) probably won’t be worth your while.

As we explored in our article The Cost of Getting Lean, getting into magazine-cover shape is intense. You have to give up a lot of your life to do this.

You eat out of Tupperware. You measure everything that goes into your mouth. Your entire routine revolves around eating (or not eating), working out, and sleeping so you have enough energy to work out again.

Sure, some people do this successfully. You could get Cameron-Diaz-ripped if you literally had nothing else to prioritize in your life.

But here’s the secret: Those people you see in the magazines (the people you imagine are “Everybody Else”) are professionals who make their living that way. 99.99 percent of us are not those people.

Those pros only look like that for a few hours or days. They pour thousands of hours and dollars into the project of getting super lean and ripped. Which means that even the 0.01 percent still don’t look like that all the time.

Nor are their lives awesome. In fact, arguably, their lives are much less awesome than you think. They’re eating three ounces of plain cold chicken out of a Ziploc bag at a family barbecue before they go and do their second workout of the day.

So if magazine covers are off the table at the moment, what can you do?

Step 2.
Find new ‘That Girl’ inspiration.

How about your kid’s preschool teacher? She’s on her feet all day, spends recess playing tag with 4-year-olds, and has patience and calm like you’ve never seen. How does she keep up her energy?

Or the mom on your block who always seems like she’s having fun playing with her kids, and not afraid to get goofy or messy or even a little scratched up in the process. Does she have any advice for you?

What about the seventy-something who’s aging so gracefully? What has her daily routine looked like throughout the years?

Or consider your neighbor who’s so good at growing her own veggies — and always willing to share her sun-ripened tomatoes with you.

When our clients shift their perspective to “good enough”, “a little bit better”, or “just practicing”, their progress tends to pick up noticeably.

Why? They’re able to focus on something that actually works: small moments of health, fitness, and wellness that they can do… today.

Success is almost always built from putting small things on top of small things on top of small things… until they’re transformed into big things.

Step 3.
Learn to be OK with being “not OK”.

Nobody really has it all together; certainly not all the time. And we’re all at least a little bit “not OK”.

And that, paradoxically, is totally OK.

When you’re a Precision Nutrition Coaching client you’ll hear phrases like:

You’ll also hear questions like:

We help you deal with that “not OK-ness” because life is never going to be completely OK, 100 percent of the time.

It’s not going anywhere. Grappling with pain — whether that’s actual pain and suffering, or just small daily annoyances — is part of being human.

As adults, we recognize life’s complexity and richness. Wanting to “be perfect” or “have it all” is not an adult wish. It’s a child wish: to have all the toys, all the time, even your sister’s.

Everyone has a struggle, even That Girl. You might just not see it.

In addition, many of our female clients struggle with a “let’s call it complicated” relationship with food.

Plus, they feel overdrawn. After work, family, and household responsibilities, they often don’t feel like they have much left over for themselves. And despite all their knowledge about food and fitness, they struggle to be consistent and take care of themselves the way they’d like.

Many of these challenges are invisible. You often can’t see pain or disability. You often can’t see psychological distress. Unless you see someone pop a pill, you don’t know what they’re taking.

And guess what — the PN staff struggle with the exact same things.

No matter what the challenge is, at least a few of us have faced it.

And remember, That Girl, who looks so fit and healthy, may be in the middle of a long and difficult journey.

No matter how someone looks, you don’t know what it’s taken to get where they are today. We’re all out here in the field together. Trying our best under imperfect circumstances.

Accepting imperfection is your ticket to being your version of That Girl.

Step 4.
For certain symptoms, explore deeper.

It’s OK to not be OK. None of us are 100 percent OK. At the same time, sometimes things are really not-OK, including:

Sometimes, being in the depths of not-OK — maybe it’s triggered by a horrendously stressful situation at work, getting injured, or having lots of family obligations to fulfill — is the wake-up call we need to start working on being a little more OK.

Pay attention to your “dashboard indicator lights”.

Are your current struggles and imperfections more like garden-variety ups and downs? If they are, that’s just fine. It’s all part of being human.

On the other hand, if something feels really off, you might need a little extra help. You might talk to a trained coach, counselor, or other health care professional.

Step 5.
Chase your awesome.

It’s not all-or-nothing. If you can’t do an exercise or make the healthy dish you found on Pinterest, don’t let it be a reason to do nothing.

Find a work-around. Get help if you need it. Trust yourself to devise a system that works for you. For example…

Everyone has to work at it, even That Girl. Especially at the beginning.

People hate the feeling of exercise when they’re out of shape. People suck when they start a new sport. No one is good at squats the first time.

But it’s not until we can accept how things are right now — including how lost, overwhelmed, and vulnerable we sometimes feel — that we can change.

If we are willing to start where we are, a whole bunch of truly amazing things can happen:

… our own, unique, imperfect version of That Girl.

How did we do it?

By finding our own awesome.

Looking for it. Chasing it. Making it happen.

Right here, right now. In the middle of our messy, “so-not-That-Girl” lives.

What to do next

Most women I’ve coached spend a lot of time thinking about That Girl. But instead of feeling inspired, they feel paralyzed. That’s when we focus on the following:

1. Don’t get hung up on failures.

Most people who enroll in Precision Nutrition Coaching feel like they’ve “failed” at losing weight and getting in shape a bunch of times by the time they come to us.

For women, that leads to lots of negative feelings — especially shame and sadness.

But when I look at you, I don’t see a “failure”. I see hope, courage and persistence. Because after every time you’ve fallen off the wagon, even if you’ve fallen so hard that your head is still spinning, you get back up. You keep trying. You keep hoping.

I don’t see every time you ended a fitness program or a nutrition plan. I see every time you tried to start again.

Now that’s courage. So I don’t have to “inspire” or “motivate” you. Your hope springs eternal.

As a coach, my job is to help you start better, and keep going on the right path — a path that works for you, and your busy, messy, real, “imperfect” life.

And, at Precision Nutrition, we want to help you learn and discover what does work for you, so you can just keep on doing it, and enjoying it. Finding the right path for your unique needs is what will help you regain ownership over your body, your health, and your “That Girl-ness”.

2. Think about what success looks like for you.

Instead of an imaginary, plastic, magazine-cover That Girl, imagine yourself… living the kind of life you want to live.

Be specific. What is That Girl doing at 3pm on a Tuesday? What does she do, or think about, or remember, when she wakes up in the morning? What does she have for lunch?

How does she think about the world? What kinds of decisions does she make about her life? What kinds of adventures does she have, and what makes those possible?

For example… is she lifting heavy weights and rocking tank tops? Doing ‘mud runs’ with her kids? Finally getting rehab for her old shoulder injury and actually doing chin-ups? Hiking in the Andes?

Don’t box yourself in with a rigid, narrow ideal. Go big and zesty with your imagined future. That Girl is having a juicy life. How?

3. Build workarounds / bridges on the path to That Girl.

OK, now, break that inspirational role model’s daily routine into very, very tiny pieces.

Maybe you imagined what she had for lunch. Now imagine her just opening the fridge. In that moment, what is she thinking? What is she doing? Start there, in that small moment.

Maybe you imagined what she did for her exercise, like hiking a gorgeous outdoor trail, or surfing, or tango dancing. Now imagine her just putting her hiking boots on, or stepping into the surf. In that moment, what is she thinking? How is she taking on this adventure? Start there, in that small moment.

Maybe your version of “surfing” today is dipping your toes in the local pool at the Y. Maybe your version of mountain climbing today is walking your aging pug up a stiff hill. Maybe your version of sexy tango today is wiggling your slightly arthritic hips to “Bootylicious” as you make dinner for the kids. Good enough. Now you’ve started.

Become an engineer of your life: Start with the outcome you want, and work backward. Break that outcome down into tinier and tinier pieces until you arrive at something you can do in the next five minutes to work towards that goal, and that life, and that ultimate adventure.

Take one small problem at a time — one barrier to eating well or working out, and play with different ways to solve it. How can you overcome that one obstacle today? Can you do it again tomorrow?

4. Just start acting like That Girl.

Adopt her confidence. Assume you’re capable of the things she is. Strut a little when you walk. Cruise hiking boot websites and dream of mountains. Whisper to yourself that you, and not cruel fate, are the boss of your life.

Would That Girl do an extra rep or an extra 100 meters? Would That Girl sign up for a Zumba class even though she steps on her own feet? Would That Girl wear the crazy-colored workout tights that she loves, even though some jerk told her she had a big bum when she was 15?

How would That Girl kick the world in the ass today? And how can you at least start to pretend to do the same… until you practice so much, you forget that kicking the world in the ass wasn’t your natural habit?

No, you can’t lose 40 pounds or get ripped overnight. But if you just take on a few of That Girl’s habits, one at a time and little by little, you may eventually find yourself living a much more fabulous life in a much stronger, happier, healthier body.

5. Start assembling your team.

Truth: Life is not a do-it-yourself project. Nobody — not even Beyoncé — is that independent.

So, ask yourself:

Do you need to add people to your “Project OK” team? Such as a trusted buddy or family member, a coach, counselor, or other health care provider? If so, find them and share your vision with them. Ask for what you need. Let them help.

Change does not happen spontaneously. Along with helpers, you need systems. Things that remind you, guide you, help you, fill in the gaps for you, and generally help you stay more or less on track.

Start actively seeking out the support systems that will help you get to where you want to go.

Want help becoming the healthiest, fittest, strongest version of you?
