as many have said, i also agree that this song has something to do with cavetown’s gender dysphoria. in the bit where he says «i hope that she looks at me and thinks, shit hes so pretty», i think that ‘she’ is cavetown before he transitioned and he’s trying to say that he hope younger him looks at current him and thinks of it in a positive light

Perhaps «Juliet is about Robbie, the song writer’s experience with gender dysphoria. Juliet represents his dead gender, female, while Sour Boy is Robbie’s goal. «I wanna make a color that no one has ever seen» may be a reference to how Blue and Pink are gender colors, so maybe making a new one is what Robbie wants.

I personally was laying on the floor of my kitchen sobbing to this song, the line that gets me is “i hope that she looks at me and thinks shit hes so pretty“ bc i am a trans male and am in love with my best friend, so its either his old self or a love interest

My interpretation of this song is that it’s about Robbie’s experiences as a trans male and gender dysphoria. Juliet is a metaphor for who he used to be. Juliet is Robbie pre-figuring out his identity. I’ve seen lots of people say that Juliet is a girl he likes with the line,

‘I hope she looks at me and thinks: shit he’s so pretty.’

But you should keep in mind that Robbie is Aromatic, meaning he isn’t romantically attracted to anyone. I think it means that if this old self, Juliet, saw him now that he hopes she’d think he’s pretty.

I think that this song is an interpretation for caveman’s past self. I’m also trans and sometimes I think about what my past self would see me as, and how I hope that “she looks at me, and thinks shit he’s so pretty.” So she would be him pre-transition/self acceptance.

‘My sour boy is a pain, I wanna shoot him in the brain’s is interpreting that Robbie is possibly trying to say that Sour Boy is a future preference and Juliet is what he used to be. What I’m saying is that Robbie is wanting to be Transgender. ‘i wanna make a colour that no one else has seen before’. This line is possibly saying that ‘oh I don’t feel either gender (male, female) so he tries out the lable ‘non-binary’ but that doesn’t succeed. So Sour Boy is him in the future telling him that ‘You can be who you want’ and that Sour boy is someone Robbie dislikes because Sour Boy tells him this stuff but is going through heavy Gender Dysphoria and is confused on his gender. He still keeps on with the label ‘non-binary’ but also Juliet was his last gender (female) but Robbie just wanted to be like Sour Boy (male) but he just couldn’t decide. ‘i hope that she looks at me and thinks shit he’s so pretty’, meaning that Robbie has transitioned and figured out that he is transgender FTM (female to male) and that he wants Juliet to think he’s pretty in his new life and new body after his entire transition.

I agree with most of these interpretations, especially the ones associating the song with gender dysphoria. I think one of the more confusing things to me though is, who is «Juliet»? Is she a hypothetical future lover, or someone he already knows? What lead me to question this was when he says «I hope that she looks at me and thinks shit, he’s so pretty» I think there are 3 possible interpretations for this line. First one being in a literal sense, he hopes the girl he likes sees him as pretty. Second one is similar, where he hopes a future lover or people in general see him as pretty. And the third one is kind of wild, and I doubt this is correct, but maybe «she» is his past self, and he hopes his past self would be proud of who he is today. I don’t know for sure, but I think the song in general is about feeling not good enough and unable to ask for help. Lines like «I’m just a kid», «When I should stand my ground, and when I need to just sit down» and «I want to make a color that no one else has seen before, I wanna be so much more». Whoever Juliet is or what she represents helps him realize that he needs to ask for help sometimes, and he can’t do it alone.

I feel that this song is about how he [cavetown] has his off days however there is always her [juliet] to pick him back up. The idea of her subtely helps him carry on with his day, carry on with his life. I often think sometimes that certain parts of this song could be about transitioning as well, wanting to be seen as a boy, seen as a ‘pretty’ boy. ‘I hope that she looks at me and thinks shit he’s so pretty’ could possibly be meaning that he wants ‘juliet’ to look at him once he’s finally happy with himself, after his transition and see him for who he really is. The lines before and after ‘but i’m really just a kid’ also makes me think about how this song could be about coping with mental illness alone, then discovering that sometimes alone isn’t the best way to do it (how ‘juliet’ comes into again.) just a thought 🙂

My interpretation of this song is that it is showing how he (Cavetown) feels on some of his low days. He wants to get up and talk about it but he can’t find the energy or the motivation. He wants to do better and do the impossible like making a new color and it is keeping him down. He feels like there is a bully in his head telling him how terrible he is even though that’s not true.
The song may even be saying that Juliet is someone who keeps him going and keeps him motivated even in those really though days.
