A remarkable railway journey of my own.

I always wanted to go with my friends on a journey by train. We delayed going on a journey a few times. At last the occasion of going to Moscow by train came true. In spite of raining we lleft our flat early in the morning. We suggested meeting with friends at six o’clock. I enjoy getting up early but not in a rainy weather. It appeared that our train’s departure was put off for twenty minutes. We sat against each other and all the way sang songs and listened to music. Our compartment was separate and we had a great comfort. Five hours of our trip have past like a moment. We decided to go on a journey with friends once more. It’s remarkable to spend time with clever and good friends. I can’t help thinking we’ve made a remarkable railway journey. My friends asked me to organize one more journey in the nearest future. We expect to fulfill our dream next holidays.

My favorite book is « The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes» by a well-known great writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Arthur Conan Doyle was born on the 22 of May in 1859 in Scotland. In 1881 he finished univercity as a doctor, but in 1882 he began his writing career. His popular detective stories about Holmes and Watson were written in 1891 and were firstly published in 1892.They tell us about adventures of a very clever, brave and inimitable detective Sherlock Holmes and his best and true friend doctor John Watson. It is very interesting that Holmes is a person, who really existed. Professor of Edinburgh University mr. Joseph Bell was his prototype. Once Conan Doyle wanted to kill his character, but his fans didn`t like this idea at all, so he wrote more stories about Sherlock Holmes. In my opinion public love these detective stories because Holmes differs from other detectives, combination of absolutely different qualities makes him very timely nowadays. But he wrote not only about Holmes. There are a lot of romances, novels and humorous stories by Conan Doyle. I suppose that everyone should read books which were written by sir Arthur Conan Doyle, because they are very original, interesting, amusing and exciting. It is very easy to read these wonderful books too.

Scotland Fights for its Independence

In 1286 the king of Scotland died. His daughter, a little girl, became queen, but she soon died too. About ten Scottish barons, who were relatives of different kings who had died, said they had the right to be king of Scotland. Edward the First of England was asked to decide the question.

He brought a strong army to Scotland and said that he was now overlord of Scotland. Then he chose John Balliol to be king of Scotland. Most of the barons agreed, but the people of Scotland were against. They did not want Edward to be their overlord.

Soon the Scots rose to fight for their independence. It was not long before they found a leader against the English. This was William Wallace, now a hero of the Scottish people. He gathered people around him and began to make attacks upon the English. An army was sent to Scotland, but Wallace destroyed it. Now King Edward himself marched into Scotland and defeated Wallace after a great struggle. A few years later the English captured the Scottish leader and killed him, but the Scots still made attacks on the English. Soon they found a new leader Robert Bruce. He was a feudal lord and was made king of Scotland.

Edward sent an army against him, and Robert Bruce had to go and hide in the Highlands. For many months his life in the hills was very difficult. Most of his followers left him, but a small group of real friends stood by him in his difficult situation.

At last Bruce organised an army which was ready to fight. In the battle near a place called Bannockburn the Scots won the independence of their country. This was in 1314. Robert Bruce was king of Scotland till he died in 1321.

It was only in 1603 that Scotland and England were united. In that year James VI of Scotland became James I of England.

Travelling in England Before Railways

There were no railways in England before 1825, and if people wanted to travel, they had to go by road, either on foot, on horseback, or in a coach. In the days before the railways, however, people did not travel as much as they do now. The roads were few, and most of them were bad, especially when it rained.

A journey by coach took a long time. Two hundred years ago passengers from Edinburgh to London were two weeks on the road – if the weather was good. A hundred years later, however, the journey was often done in about two days, and today the “Flying Scotsman” can take you from London to the capital of Scotland in about eight hours. Today many people prefer to go to Edinburgh by air.

People could not travel much in the past as the fares were high. A coach could not take many people, and the fares were high because the coach-owners had to pay for the use of the horses that were kept at the inns (hotels) all along the road. Travelling in the mail coaches cost still more, because they carried the mail and did not travel so slowly.

Even walking cost money in those days. On every highway (main road) and also on many of the side roads, there were gates called tollgates. When a traveller came to one, he had to pay a toll. This money was used to make the roads better.

But the greatest danger on the road two hundred years ago were the highwaymen. A highwayman was a man who took money and jewels from travellers on the roads. Highwaymen stopped coaches and cried: “Your money or your life!” and passengers had to give them all they had. Sometimes a highwayman had friends at the inns. If some rich people stayed at an inn, the highwayman was soon told and he then stopped their carriage the next day.

That’s why travelling in the days of the coaches was dangerous and not very comfortable.

Are the sentences true or false?

5 Sometimes a highwayman hadn’t friends at the inns. ___

Write 200−250 words. Use the following plan:

— make an opening statement on the subject of the project work;

40.1. Sports are important in many people’s lives and are a vital part of a healthy life. People who do sports are generally happier and more productive. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out what kinds of sports are popular in the modern world. I have found some data on this issue and organised it in the table below.

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the table. The first one is that more than 11% of people play football, making this sport the single most popular one. The second feature is that only 6.7% of people reported doing athletics, putting this activity at the bottom of the table.

It is also worth mentioning that football is only slightly more popular than volleyball, with only 0.4% more people who practice it.

In my opinion, the statistics in the table reveal an important problem. We can see that most people do not do any kind of sports daily, which can lead to public health issues. I think that in order to solve this problem schools should focus more on PE lessons.

In conclusion, I believe that sports are an essential part of the modern world. Not only are they fun, they’re also great at promoting a healthier way of living and can lead to a better life.

40.2. Different kinds of transport are important in every person’s lives and are a fundamental aspect of their commute through their surroundings. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out what kinds of transportation are more popular in Japan. I have found some data on this issue and organized it in the chart below.

I can identify two main features according to the statistics presented in the chart. The first one is that the majority of people use the train, making this way of commuting the most popular one. The second feature is that commuting by motorbike is the least popular in Japan, while the second most popular one is commuting by car.

It is also worth mentioning that commuting by bus is slightly more popular than by walking.

In conclusion, I believe that promoting eco-friendly alternatives like electrical scooters or bicycles around the city is a great way to decrease the concentration of CO2 in the air. Not only will this alternative help the environment, but it will also promote a healthier and sustainable lifestyle.
