Cruise ships

A cruise ship or a cruise liner is a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and the ship’s amenities are considered an essential part of the experience. Cruising has become a major part of the tourism industry, with millions of passengers each year.

Cruise ships operate on mostly set roundabout course or round trips (i.e. they tend to return to their originating port) whereas ocean liners are defined by actually doing ocean-crossing voyages, which may not lead back to the same port for years.

Cruise ships are descended from the transatlantic ocean liners, which, since the mid-20 th century, have found their services preempted by jet aircraft. Indeed, some cruise ships were liners adapted to tropical cruising through largely superficial alteration – e.g., the addition of swimming pools and other amenities to suit warm-latitude cruising areas. However, most cruise ships now in service were built specifically for the cruise trade. Since most of them are designed for large numbers of passengers, they are characterized by high superstructures of many decks, and, since their principle routes lie in warm seas, they are typically painted white all over. Closer examination usually reveals a large number of motor launches carried aboard for the ferrying ashore of passengers. Many cruise ships have stern ramps, much like those found on cargo-carrying roll-on/roll-off ships, in order to facilitate the transfer of passengers to the launches and to serve as docking facilities for small sporting boats.

The above features present the principle challenge to the cruise-ships designer: providing the maximum in safety, comfort, and entertainment for the passengers. Thus, isolation of machinery noise and vibration is of high importance. Minimizing the rolling and pitching motions of the hull is even more important – no extreme of luxury can offset a simple case of seasickness. Since cruising is low-speed activity, propulsive power is usually much lower than that found in the old ocean liners. On the other hand, electric power is usually of much greater magnitude, mainly because of demands by air-conditioning plants in tropical waters.

Commercial Vessels

Commercial vessels or merchant ships can be divided into three broad categories: cargo ship, passenger ships, and special-purpose ships. Cargo ships transport dry and liquid cargo. Dry cargo can be transported in bulk by bulk carriers, packed directly onto a general cargo ship in break-bulk, packed in intermodal containers as aboard a container ship, or driven aboard as in roll-on/ roll-off ships. Liquid cargo is generally carried in bulk aboard tankers, such as oil tankers which may include both crude and finished products of oil, chemical tankers which may also carry vegetable oils other than chemicals and LPG/LNG tankers (liquefied petroleum gas/liquefied natural gas), although smaller shipments may be carried on container ships in tank containers.

Passenger ship range in size from small river ferries to very large cruise ships. This type of vessel includes ferries, which move passengers and vehicles on short trips; ocean liners, which carry passengers from one place to another; and cruise ships, which carry passengers on voyages undertaken for pleasure, visiting several places and with leisure activities on board, often returning them to the port of embarkation.

Special-purpose vessels are not used for transport but for other tasks. Examples include tugboats, pilot boats, rescue boats, cable ships, research vessels, survey vessels, and icebreakers.

Most commercial vessels have full hull-forms to maximize cargo capacity. Hulls are usually made of steel, although aluminum can be used on faster craft, and fiberglass on the smallest service vessels. Commercial vessels generally have a crew headed by a captain, with deck officers and marine engineers on larger vessels. Special-purpose vessels often have specialized crew if necessary, for example scientists aboard research vessels.

Commercial vessels are typically powered by a single propeller driven by a diesel or, less usually, gas turbine engine. The fastest vessels may use pump-jet engines.

A. I believe playing sports is more than an activity to fill your day, it can teach important life lessons. When I was a child, my dad spent a lot of time teaching me how to play different sports. He told me that if I can succeed in sports, I can succeed at anything in life. He used to say, ‘It’s not about how good you become. It’s about working hard to get where you want to be.’

B. I like bicycles. Group rides help me to get new skills and make new friends. I try to apply the tactics of group riding to team work in the real world. In the perfect group ride, each rider takes a turn leading the pack, while the others enjoy the benefits of drafting. I think this way of working is a great method for approaching a group task anywhere.

C. I believe in the power of running. Running should not be a battle for your body but rather a rest for your mind. I felt this last fall, when I was running in the park. Suddenly I felt as if I could have run forever, as if I could use running as a source of therapy for my body. Running allows the body to release different types of stress and even change our understanding of life.

D. My father coached basketball every day of his life, and I was right there with him in the gym watching him work his magic. Basketball appears entertaining and exciting. But the path to success is not simple. My father always told me, ‘Nothing is free.’ I took this advice and ran with it. I truly believe that only practice and determination lead to success.

E. Baseball is so much more than a sport. One of the powers of baseball is that it brings people together. It unites fans of all ages, genders, and nationalities. No matter who you are, you can be a baseball fan. My mom and I have one unspoken rule: no matter what has been going on before, no fighting at the game.

F. I believe that you must always be loyal to the sport teams you support. The teams I follow in the United States generally lose many more than they win. The start of each season brings dreams of victory in baseball, basketball or football, dreams that fade away soon. But then there is always next year. It will be our year for sure.

G. I was determined to join the swim team. I knew I would get my strengths and learn my weaknesses there. Waking up early for 6:30 a.m. practices is what swim team is all about, as it helps us get into state. On a long school day you think about the practice in the pool after school. You want to hear the crowd cheering you, telling you that you have to do more than your best.

Lily and I had planned a movie marathon weekend. I was exhausted from work and she was stressed out from her classes, so we’d promised to spend the whole weekend parked on her couch and subsist solely on pizza and crisps. No healthy food. No diet Coke. And absolutely no strict, official clothes. Even though we talked all the time, we hadn’t spent any real time together since I’d moved to the city.

We’d been friends since the eighth grade, when I first saw Lily crying alone at a cafeteria table. She’d just moved in with her grandmother and started at our school in Avon, after it became clear that her parents weren’t coming home any time soon. The day I found her crying alone in the cafeteria was the day her grandmother had forced her to chop off her dirty dreadlocks, and Lily was not very happy about it. Something about the way she talked, the way she said, “That’s so nice of you,” and “Let’s just forget about it”, charmed me, and we immediately became friends. We’d been inseparable through the rest of high school, and lived in the same room for all four years at Brown College. Lily hadn’t yet decided whether she preferred girlish dresses or rough leather jackets, but we complemented each other well. And I missed her. Because with her first year as a graduate student and my exhausting work, we hadn’t seen a whole lot of each other lately.

Lily was studying for her Ph.D. in Russian Literature at Columbia University and working odd jobs every free second she wasn’t studying. Her grandmother barely had enough money to support herself, and Lily had to pay for the studies on her own. However, she seemed to be fond of such a way of life. She loved Russian culture ever since her eighth-grade teacher told her that Lily looked how he had always pictured Lolita, with her round face and curly black hair. She went directly home and read Nabokov’s “Lolita”, and then read everything else Nabokov wrote. And Tolstoy. And Gogol. And Chekhov. By the time we finished school, she was applying to Brown College to work with a specific professor who had a degree in Russian Literature. On interviewing a seventeen-year-old Lily the professor declared her one of the most well- read and passionate students of Russian literature he’d ever met. She still loved it, still studied Russian grammar and could read anything in its original.

I couldn’t wait for the weekend. My fourteen-hour workdays were registering in my feet, my upper arms, and my lower back. Glasses had replaced the contacts I’d worn for a decade because my eyes were too dry and tired to accept them anymore. I’d begun losing weight already as I never had time to eat properly, although I was drinking an enormous amount of coffee. I’d already weathered a flue infection and had paled significantly, and it had been only four weeks. I was only twenty-three years old. And my boss hadn’t even been in the office yet. I knew I deserved a weekend.

Saturday afternoon found us particularly motivated, and we managed to saunter round the city center for a few hours. We each bought some new clothes for the upcoming New Year’s party and had a mug of hot chocolate from a sidewalk cafii. By the time we made it back to her apartment, we were exhausted and happy and spent the rest of the night watching old movies and eating pizza.

What did the girls hope to do that weekend?

1) Talk all the weekend.

2) Have some more studies that weekend.

2) her grandmother didn’t like the way she talked.

3) she had to wear clothes she didn’t like.

Why did the girl become friends with Lily?

1) She liked Lily’s dress.

2) She became fascinated with her.

3) They had common problems.

4) She wanted to comfort her.

“We complemented each other well” in paragraph 2 means that they

1) were a perfect match.

2) liked the same things.

3) supported each other.

4) found a common language.

Why did Lily have to do some occasional jobs?

1) She had to pay for her studies.

2) She had to support her grandmother.

3) She liked to change jobs.

4) She spent a lot on her clothes.

The girl “couldn’t wait for the weekend” because she

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Mary who writes:

. Summer is coming and I want to look my best: healthy, energetic and physically fit. So I’m trying to eat plain, simply cooked natural food, have enough sleep at night and I have recently joined our local fitness club. Do you do anything special to stay healthy? What makes people healthy and strong? What do you think about a healthy lifestyle?
By the way, I m going to spend a month at the seaside this summer.

Write a letter to Mary. In your letter answer her questions, ask 3 questions about her coming summer holidays. Write 100—140 words. Remember the rules of letter writing. You have 20 minutes to do this task.

Comment on the following statement: Public libraries are becoming less popular and they will soon disappear. What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write 200–250 words. Use the following plan:
− make an introduction (state the problem)
− express your personal opinion and give 2–3 reasons for your opinion
− express an opposing opinion and give 1–2 reasons for this opposing opinion
− explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion
− make a conclusion restating your position

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

How many nostrils do you have? Four. Two you can see, two you can’t. This discovery came from observing how fish breathe. Fish get their oxygen from water. Most of them have two pairs of nostrils, a forward-facing set for letting water in and a pair of «exhaust pipes» for letting it out again. The question is, if humans evolved from fishes, where did the other pair of nostrils go. The answer is that they migrated back inside the head to become internal. To do this they somehow had to work their way back through the teeth.
Similar gaps between the teeth can also be seen at an early stage of the human birth. When they fail to join up, the result is a cleft palate. So one ancient fish explains two ancient human mysteries. The most recent research on noses, incidentally, shows that we use each of our two external nostrils to detect different smells.

Dear Mary,
Thank you for your letter. I’m sorry for not writing you for so long. I spent my time doing a school project.
I hope that all your efforts will show a great result. I try to care more about my health lately: I try to avoid unhealthy and fat food. Also I train every morning and go to the gym. I think that sport and healthy food are the most important components of being healthy and strong. Nowadays, the healthy lifestyle becomes more and more popular and I don’t see anything bad in it.
Anyway, you’ve mentioned holidays. With whom are you going to the seaside? Why have you decided to spend the month there? What exactly are you going to do?
I’ve got to go as my dad is asking me to help him with his car.
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Kate

— делить текст на абзацы, которые отражают содержательную и логическую структуру текста;
— сделать введение и заключение приблизительно одинаковыми по объему;
— разбить основную часть как минимум на два абзаца, приблизительно одинаковых по размеру;

1) What services do you provide?
2) Can I get a discount card?
3) Do you work at weekends?
4) How many clients per day do you have?
5) Are you providing any guarantees?

Вопросы должны быть грамматически верными. Избегайте необоснованных пауз в речи, верно расставляйте ударения, правильно используйте интонацию, не нарушайте нормы произношения слов.

I’ve chosen photo number 3. When I finally finished all my work I decided to leave my home town and spend 3 months on the resort. One of my friends inclined towards going with me but at the last minute he refused to go. But it wasn’t bad after all. I was amazed by the excellent work of the staff at that resort. All employees were very friendly and attentive. They always suggested their help. And the view was incredible. I took the photo when I first visited the local swimming pool. I didn’t expect to see such incredible view. I’d never seen anything like this before. The whole island could be seen form that spot and this place was the most popular among tourists. In the foreground of the photo you can see the spectacular swimming pool. In the background there are giant mountains covered with grass. I keep the photo in my album because of the unique pool which I’ve never seen before. I decided to show the picture to my friend because it was one of the greatest moments from that trip. I hope to return there on my next vacations.

In the picture number 1 we can see a young woman cooking. Perhaps, she is preparing a dinner for her boyfriend. She is wearing shorts and a shirt. She is blond and very beautiful. In the second one we can see another girl, who is wearing a snowboarding suit and a snowboard on her legs. She also has a mask, gloves and a hat.
I can say that these two pictures are having much in common. They both are showing us young woman. Both of them are related with timespending.
But there is a difference as well. In the picture on the left we see a girl at home, making dinner and being a good housewife, on the right – a good example of an active timespending. Another difference is that the girl on the right is outside, while a blond on the left is in the kitchen.
As for me, I’d prefer being on the right. It´s not because I don´t like cooking, it´s just because I prefer spend my time activelly and I do snowboarding much better than preparing food.
