Модальный глагол Should

Изначально should являлся прошедшей формой shall, и оба слова выражали обязательство. Но в современном английском они приобрели различные значения и считаются двумя разными глаголами.

Should может использоваться в настоящем и будущем контексте. В косвенной речи should не меняется.

You should be more careful. Вам следует быть внимательнее.

I told him he should be more careful.

Не should phone his parents tonight, but he probably won’t have time.

Он должен позвонить, но, вероятно, у него не будет времени на это.

If you see anything strange you should call the police.

Если ты увидишь что-то странное, ты должен вызвать полицию.

Should + перфектный инфинитив — желательное действие не было совершено

Shouldn’t + перфектный инфинитив – действие произошло, но оно было нежелательно

You shouldn’t have done that. It was stupid.

(Вам не следовало это делать).

They should never have married. They are so unhappy.

Им вообще не следовало (не нужно было) жениться.

You should stay in bed.

Вам нужно (следует) лежать в постели.

c) Вероятность, предположение (только по отношению к настоящему или будущему).

Гости вряд ли придут раньше, чем через час.

2. В придаточных предложениях условия If…should…

If you should see Tom, tell him to phone me. Если ты случайно встретишь Тома, скажи, чтобы позвонил мне.

По сути, значение предложения такое же, как и в If you see Tom… Но вариант с should выражает меньшую степень уверенности.

В начале предложения should может опускаться:

Should you see Tom, tell him to phone me.

3. Для эмоциональной окраски

Why should he do it? – С какой стати он будет делать это?

Если действие относится к прошлому, то за глаголом should следует перфектный инфинитив :

b) В следующем предложении:

How should I know? – Откуда мне знать?

с) в конструкция типа:

To think that it should come to this! — Подумать только, до чего дело дошло!

To think that it should have happened to me! — Не могу поверить, что это произошло со мной.

4. В придаточных предложениях после:

a) следующих прилагательных

It is/was │ important, essential, strange, amazing, odd, funny, typical, natural, interesting, surprising, etc. │ that …should….

I am/was │surprised, puzzled, amazed, infuriated, etc.│that….should…

b) глаголов: suggest, propose, recommend, insist, demand

She demanded that I should apologize to her (= She demanded that I apologized to her)

They insisted that we should have dinner with them (= They insisted that we had dinner with them)

Jim suggested (that) I should buy a car. (= Jim suggested that I bought a car)

1) Как перевести It’s strange that he should be late.
Тут, я так понимаю, тот же смысл должет быть: I was surprised that he should ask me for advice.
Не понимаю это значение should вообще.

2) Две странные вещи в учеббнике. Первая про то, что I should может значить что-то вроде I would do it if I were you, I advise you to do it.
Пример: It’s very cold outside. I should wear a coat when you go out.
Я удивилась, потому что не встречала этого никогда. Так правда может быть?

3) Вторая вещь, насторожившая меня, это то, что после suggest оказывается не может быть to. То есть,
What do you suggest we should do? или What do you suggest we do? но никогда не What do you suggest us to do?
А звучит как раз третье привычнее всего. Я ошибаюсь, да?

Развейте мои сомнения, пожалуйста.

Странная вещь в учебнике под номером два звучит очень странно.

Насчет suggest. Вот, что говорит мой электрословарь «Лингво»:

1) предлагать, советовать The architect suggested restoring the building. — Архитектор предложил восстановить здание. He suggested a visit to the gallery. — Он посоветовал посетить галерею. She suggested a compromise to us. — Она предложила нам компромиссное решение. I suggested waiting. — Я предложил подождать. Who suggested his taking part? — Кто был инициатором того, чтобы он принял участие?

2) внушать, вызывать; подсказывать ( мысль ); намекать; наводить на мысль; говорить о, означать Does the name suggest nothing to you? — Разве это имя вам ничего не говорит? An idea suggested itself to me — Мне пришла в голову мысль What does this shape suggest to you? — Это что-нибудь вам напоминает? She suggested (to us) that an exception be/should be made. — Она пыталась нас убедить в том, что должно быть сделано исключение. Did she suggest where we should meet? — Она сказала, где мы должны встретиться?

Как видно из словаря, suggest to можно использовать.
