Reflection

Live simply so that others may simply live…

Voluntary Simplicity is a lifestyle designed to focus on living and veer away from material possessions by subtracting the unnecessary and adding the meaningful. The rejection of consumerism arises from the recognition that ordinary Western-style consumption habits are degrading the planet; that lives of high consumption are unethical in a world of great human need; and that the meaning of life does not and cannot consist in the consumption or accumulation of material things. Extravagance and acquisitiveness are accordingly considered an unfortunate waste of life, certainly not deserving of the social status and admiration they seem to attract today. The affirmation of simplicity arises from the recognition that very little is needed to live well – that abundance is a state of mind, not a quantity of consumer products or attainable through them.

According to this philosophy of living, personal and social progress is measured not by the conspicuous display of wealth or status, but by increases in the qualitative richness of daily living, the cultivation of relationships, and the development of social, intellectual, aesthetic, and/or spiritual potentials. As Duane Elgin has famously defined it, voluntary simplicity is ‘a manner of living that is outwardly simple and inwardly rich, … a deliberate choice to live with less in the belief that more life will be returned to us in the process’.

It should be noted that voluntary simplicity does not, however, mean living in poverty, becoming an ascetic monk, or indiscriminately renouncing all the advantages of science and technology. It does not involve regressing to a primitive state or becoming a self-righteous puritan. And it is not some escapist fad reserved for saints, hippies, or eccentric outsiders. Rather, advocates of simplicity suggest that by examining afresh our relationships with money, material possessions, the planet, ourselves and each other, ‘the simple life’ of voluntary simplicity is about discovering the freedom and contentment that comes with knowing how much consumption is truly ‘enough’.

This premise has long been held to be true.Living as simply as possible is an ideal and in a material world not always easy to achieve as we have needs, usually based on our desire to have what everyone else has, even so it is possible to be aware of those less fortunate and give what we can when we can. I agree happiness does dwell within us and we can achieve it in a variety of ways and giving has always been a winner in my book. Great post O and very thought provoking.

I usually don’t buy anything fancy unless it has a practical purpose. Knowing that, once my friends gave me a bouquet of vegetables instead of flowers to make it more ‘practical’. It was very well received and gobbled up with joy by all members of my family 🙂

The same with my kids – they all know that I’m happy to fund bare essentials. If they want something fancier, they need to earn and spend their own money on that. Yes, that does mean that they get from me only the cheapest cell phone for emergency calls that has no fancy games, no matter how ‘uncool’ it might look to their mates. The same with clothes and all the other things. However I’m always happy to fund sport activities and learning/life experiences (e.g. travelling, going to museums, exhibitions etc.) for them. It is all about finding a good balance.

Great philosophy,I agree, but kids now do put you under some pressure about the fads they think they have to have. I like your approach though O.

Totally agree with you on that. Kids surely do put a lot of pressure when it comes to all sorts of fads. It is always an ongoing challenge.

Good Luck, thankfully all of mine have grown up…lol…some of them have kids of their own.

Thanks 🙂 Good luck with resisting pressure from the grandchildren now 😉

At the moment two live a long from me and the others are all little ones.

Wow, you are a very busy granddad. Enjoy your growing grandchildren. 🙂

I am finding it an interesting phenomenon that I am not as good a gdad as i was a father….I spent a lot of time with my kids growing up……I like being a gdad, like it when they home after to their own mum’s and dad’s….lol

You need a break to recharge your batteries too 😉 I’m sure you are very special for them and will always be.

Well I am special…lol……there’s no doubt about that……maybe you should read my blog…

It looks like our thoughts crossed in the blogosphere. I just got onto your blog and was reading through your poetry when I got your comment. Love your blog. You are truly special. I’m looking forward to following your blog 🙂

Thank you O, please visit and comment…..thank you again…

‘Live simply so that others may simply live’

When I first came across these quotes from Gandhi as a teenager, they had a huge impact on me.

I have always considered the first saying to include other species, and the earth itself – that in order for other people and other species to live well and for life on earth to flourish, we all need to live more simply – to embrace voluntary simplicity. The second quote compelled me to take responsibility for what changes I wanted to see – to live it, not just talk about.

Mahatma Gandhi – ‘my life is my message’

Permaculture appeals to me because it is practical, about living simply and about designing with nature – aiming to create low-impact resilient communities that are in harmony with the natural world. However, in order to live with nature and design with nature, we need to understand how nature sustains life.

To explore how nature actually does sustain life, over the years I have explored Fritjof Capra’s systems view of life. He has recently co-authored a text book on the subject and is now offering a 12 week online program which I have enrolled in to develop a deeper understanding of how life works. I am enthralled.

Fritjof Carpa – scientist, educator, activist, and author. The focus of his education and activism is to to help build and nurture sustainable communities. His thinking has been extremely influential on mine over the years – I studied with him in 1992 and 2000 at Schumacher College in England.

Last night I listened to Fritjof Capra explain the systems view of evolution in part 4 of his course. It changed my understanding of how life evolved – from what I had learned at school, from what is still taught in most schools of biology.

The first big change he highlighted, brought about by recent discoveries in microbiology, is that evolution is not just about random mutations followed by natural selection, as Darwin explained. There is a third way of evolution, one which Lyn Margulis (1938 – 2011) describes as co-evolution or symbiosis of bacteria – things don’t evolve in isolation, but together.

Lynn Margulis has changed the way we think about evolution – that it is a creative process of co-evolution.

Margulis explains that in the world of bacteria, genes are exchanged so rapidly that it is actually difficult to identify the different species of bacteria. She suggests that bacteria actually forms one microscopic web of life across the whole planet – a global communications network that has been around for billions of years (well before the internet!).

This process of co-evolution and has created all life’s basic systems – fermentation, photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, respiration… Margulis says creativity is the new focus of evolutional theory.

Another key point Fritjof made was that human evolution is not just a physical, biological process, but that humans coevolved in social relationships and with technology. People’s ability to cultivate good community and the use of tools determined their ability to survive – it is not just survival of the biologically fittest.

Also ancient cave and rock paintings from 30-40,000 years ago show amazing sophistication. This shows that art was part of human evolution from the beginning. From this, Fritjof explains that the emergence of modern human species is the emergence of the storyteller and artist – and that we cannot understand the evolution of humans without understanding art, language and culture. A purely scientific explanation is insufficient – we need a whole systems view of life.

Finally, Fritjof reminded us that we humans are the newcomers to the web of life and so we must respect life, and the rules and traditions of earth’s household – oikos…. Live simply and lightly on the earth, live in harmony with nature.

To illustrate just how recently we have arrived, in Fritjof’s lecture he referred to David Brower’s* story of the history of life on the planet:

Our planet was formed as a fireball of molten lava around 4.5 billion years ago. The first cell formation, the beginning of life, took place 3.5 billion years ago.

Imagine however, the Earth is just 6 days old:

The beginning: Sunday midnight – Earth is created in the big bang.

Day 2: Tuesday 8:00am – Life created (first bacterial cells)

Day 4: Thursday midnight – the microcosm becomes fully established and now regulates the planetary system

Day 5: Friday 4:00pm – micro-organisms invent sexual reproduction

Living Lightly in a Heavy World

“Live simply so that others may simply live.”

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately… and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life”

It is hard in this complex world to keep life simple. It can take real effort to consume consciously, not buy new things all the time, repurpose what we have and not create a life full of stuff, that suffocate us.

Mindfulness and simplicity are two words we may want to consider as we quest to live more lightly on the planet. Be mindful about what you buy; do you really need it? and where does it comes from? Does it enrich your life or could it weigh you down?

We are bombarded all day long with messages telling us we need something. It’s hard to keep that impulse purchase and instant gratification in check. Especially when often we don’t need a new thing at all and it doesn’t add true value to our life. If in doubt; spend money on experiences, not stuff!

Much of the clutter and stuff that we keep in our houses really weigh us down, and employing some ideas from minimalism can help calm the chaos of consumerism. Maybe take some time to think of what the basics you really need to be happy, comfortable and free.

Last year I went hiking in Norway and me and my boyfriend had to carry everything we needed on our backs — this really makes you assess what you really need! but I did insist on a V60 and ground coffee, and I can tell you — after several days in the wilderness; after a hot shower at a campsite and a hot cup of coffee — I wanted for nothing, I had absolutely everything I needed, and it turns out it wasn’t much!

Perhaps try these little ‘Live Lighter’ hacks

Lighten your load — lighten your life. In a time of big houses, big gardens, big cars… what if we consciously chose the complete opposite of that — small home, minimal stuff — how could that change how we live?

Does Lighter Living appeal to you? Do you feel weighed down by things or drama? Maybe there are some things you could let go of to help you feel lighter right now?

We all want to be centered and strong as we move forward toward a life of less busyness, less clutter, less meaningless stuff — and more purpose, more clarity, more of what matters.

We want to be healthy and present for our families. We want to have focus and creativity for our projects. We want energy for ourselves and for our lives.

Cultural messages about airbrushed bodies and diet foods are just another kind of clutter we don’t need. Instead, we can choose to be our best, healthiest selves. You can create wellness routines with intention and simplicity.

You don’t have to learn everything all at once. You can start small, or you can simplify what you’re already doing. You don’t have to invest in every health program and wellness product out there. You can choose what’s right for you — start by making small changes that add up.

1. Eat simple food.

Every body is different, but as a general rule, we can all benefit from eating more simple, nutrient-dense foods and fewer processed ones.

Eating more real foods might seem less simple at first. It takes practice.

You might have to learn new skills and new habits, and eating well requires preparation. (Get Meal Planning!)

Once you have a routine, eating foods that fuel your body will give you more energy, help you fight illness, and leave you feeling more awake and alert.

Drinking plenty of water is another simple step towards nourishing your body. Rehydrating helps flush out your digestive system, leads to clearer skin, and helps you maintain a healthy weight.

Drink more if you’re exercising, or in hotter weather. If you want to up your water game: try lemon water first thing in the morning.

2. Choose intentional movement.

If you find yourself sitting in front of a computer often, you probably already know you’d feel better if you incorporated more movement into your day.

Start small and inexpensively. You don’t have to invest in programs or equipment that you might not even use. Walking, running, sprinting up stairs, at-home yoga: any of these can help you get started without investing in a whole lot of extra stuff.

If your work doesn’t involve movement, get up and take a stretch break or a short walk every hour. The important thing is to commit to your exercise routine, rather than leaving it open to consideration each day. If you have to decide every day whether or not to exercise, it’s easy to find reasons to skip it.

Having an exercise habit that you don’t question means you don’t have to use up mental resources convincing yourself to get moving. You just do the exercise, reap the benefits, and have mental energy left over for your own creative projects.

3. Prioritize sleep.

Most of us don’t get enough sleep. There are so many good things to do with our time that it can be hard to convince ourselves to come to a complete stop. If we keep pushing ourselves to work through our exhaustion, though, our health, our well-being, and even our productivity suffer.

Your whole body benefits from getting better sleep. Your immune system, your energy level, your memory, your ability to focus — even signs of aging and likelihood of developing disease are improved by getting more sleep.

A before-bed routine of slowing down, turning off screens, and unwinding with a cup of herbal tea can help signal your body it’s time to sleep.

4. Spend time in nature.

Being in nature has a surprisingly powerful effect on our health. Time spent in the great outdoors can leave you more calm, more creative, more focused — and less anxious and less stressed.

When you make a practice of being in nature regularly, you’ll absorb more Vitamin D, get more fresh air, and get more exercise.

Even beyond those measurable wellness benefits, being in nature restores your perspective. It helps you remember your place in the world, and helps you disengage from the cultural pressures that distract you from what matters.

5. Cleanse your environment.

As you simplify your life and eliminate the unnecessary in your space, you often feel more light, more free, and more appreciative of your surroundings. It makes sense to make sure those surroundings are as life-giving as possible.

Open windows every day that the weather allows, and bring in plants.

You don’t have to do everything all at once, and you don’t always have to buy more stuff to be well. Instead, intentional steps toward health and wellness can actually support you on your simplicity journey. You’ll have more energy, more focus, and be more present as you pursue what matters. You can be well, simply.
