I arranged to stay in a farmhouse outside a village in southern Italy. My itinerary said that the plane arrived in Italy at five o’clock in the afternoon and it was a thirty-minute drive from the airport to the village. I wanted to get to my destination before it got dark, so I could have a drink, watch the sunset, and enjoy an evening meal!

The problems began at Heathrow airport My plane was three hours late. I walked around the airport looked in the shops, and drank coffee in the cafes. I didn’t eat anything. That was a mistake! When the plane finally took off, they gave me a cold, tasteless meal which I couldn’t eat.

We arrived in Italy in the early evening. The sun was setting as I was collecting my bags! I missed it completely! I went to the desk to find my hire car and that’s when I discovered the next problem. The receptionist couldn’t find my name on the computer and there were no more cars. There were no buses or trains to the village, and the taxis were on strike.

It was nearly midnight when we arrived at the farmhouse. A man opened the door and smiled. ‘Come in,’ he said. ‘We waited for you.’ I sat with a group of the friendliest people I’ve ever met and had an absolutely wonderful meal.

Somewhere around February it begins. The drizzle is coming down outside and the kids are bored on a Saturday afternoon. It’s usually then that my husband decides it is time to plan our summer holiday. Out come the brochures and the discussion begins.
It’s not that we’re an argumentative couple, but it seems that where we are to spend two weeks in the summer relaxing brings out the worst in us. Before too long, we’re all insisting on places and refusing others, the volume steadily increasing. My daughter discovers a lifelong ambition to go to India. Funny how she never mentioned it before. My son isn’t going anywhere unless he can bring his dog and my husband doesn’t mind where he goes as long as it’s within five miles of a golf course.
As usual, it’s left to someone, and guess who, to find somewhere that everybody is willing to accept (the dog goes to the neighbours, though). This can take some weeks of persuading, reminding and convincing on my part, but usually there’s a solution. Then it’s time to plan the packing. It seems that everybody else believes that it can be done half an hour before we leave for the airport. My husband lays out things he wants to take and I put them back when he’s not looking and get out the real holiday clothes. My daughter wants to take everything she owns. Each item she has to put back is the subject of another argument.
Finally the day arrives and we get to the airport in plenty of time. This happens because I start to shout five hours earlier that we are going in five minutes, ready or not. Once in the airport, we check in. It sounds simple enough, but the thing is that airports are full of people running around who don’t know where to go. Not surprising that we only do it once a year and we’ve forgotten where we went last time. We finally find the right desk, get rid of the bags and go through to the departure lounge.
Somewhere around here I can finally think about relaxing. Not for me the cold sweats, shaking, and nervous wondering about the plane. Everything is somebody else’s problem. If here’s something wrong with the plane, the pilot can worry about it. If a passenger has a heart attack, the stewards can worry about it.
And so begin two weeks of relaxation. I learned long ago that the only way to do it is to stop being called “Mom”. For those two weeks, whenever I hear the word I look around as if it refers to someone else. I ignore any question that begins with “Where’s my….”. The funny thing is that they always find it anyway. The only thing I worry about is which book I’m going to take to the pool. My husband follows a ball around a course, my kids do whatever kids do these days and I become myself again for a short while.

В предложении речь идет об однократном действии в прошлом. Говорящий констатирует факт.

Речь идет о действиях, совершенных в определенной последовательности в прошлом и следующих одно за другим – в таком случае они все выражаются Past Simple.

Last month (в прошлом месяце) указывает на употребление Past Simple.

Задание 2.

Ошибок в данном предложении нет. В первом случае говорящий констатирует факт, а во втором – речь идет об однократном действии в прошлом. В обоих случаях употребляется Past Simple.

Boys, today we have an unusual lesson of English. As you can see we have many guests. They are the representatives of some education institutions of our region, members of our administration and also your teacher. We are glad to see them.

Teacher: boy, here you can see a text “Travelling by air”. You task is to listen it for two times. The first one is for general information. The second is for details. You must stop at the end of the text and then we’ll write a dictation.

The text: Travelling by air

Let’s assume you arrive at the airport to travel somewhere by air. You have possibly made your reservation by phone and haven’t got your ticket yet. In that case the first thing you’ll do is go to the airline ticket desk to buy your ticket.
If you look at the flight-information board, you’ll find details about your flight: what the scheduled departure time is, whether it’s delayed, which gate you’re to “proceed” to, etc.

If possible, don’t check in at the last minute. Since a certain percentage of passengers are “no-shows” (i.e. have a booking but don’t show up for the flight), airlines normally overbook their flights – so even a confirmed reservation is no guarantee that you’ll actually get a seat. Latecomers are more likely to get “bumped” than those who check in early.

At the check-in desk you show your ticket, check in your baggage, and are given a boarding pass.

At most airports there are security checks. Cabin bags are X-rayed and must be opened if suspicious objects are seen. Passengers are examined with a metal detector or hand-searched.

If you’re going abroad, you have to go through passport control. On your arrival you have to go through customs as well. – You may wish to buy something at the duty-free shop. Things like cigarettes and whisky are usually much cheaper there than in normal shops. But be careful: not everything is necessarily less expensive than at home. And don’t forget: goods bought cheap at the duty-free may prove expensive if you have to pay duty on them at your destination.
After boarding, stow your hand baggage safely under the seat in front of you or, where possible, in one of the overhead luggage bins. Make sure you fasten your seat belt for takeoff and landing and at other times when the FASTEN SEAT BELT sign is on. Smoking is only allowed in the smoking section.
One person in six is afraid of flying. If you have this problem, you should relax, breathe deeply, and consider this: Statistics show that it’s 25 times safer to travel by air than by car.
