How to unlock Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Give in to the hunger.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous allows you to play as a writing swarm of insects. You must unlock the Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path to do this. You can learn how to unlock this Mythic Path below.
There are many steps you must follow to unlock this path making it one of the more difficult paths to unlock. The other thing to note is that if you follow through with this Mythic Path, all of your companions will abandon you as this is a very evil path.
At the beginning of Chapter 2, do not take the Queen with you on the Crusade. If you bring the Queen with you, you will be locked out of this path. When you arrive in Leper’s Smile, slay the Vescavor Queen and collect a sample of bug goop. Use it in the battle for Drezen.
At the beginning of Chapter 3, you will be given a quest to determine what happened to the remaining Vescavors. In one of the houses in Drezen, you will discover a Vescavor Queen. Do not kill it as doing so will lock you out of the path. Sparing the Queen will complete the quest.
Eventually, you will come face to face with a Swarm-That-Walks. This is Xanthir Vang, also known as Xanthir the Plagued One. This boss encounter is part of the story and you cannot bypass it. After defeating Xanthir Vang, speak with him and ask how he became a swarm. He will allow you to look at his notes. You need to read either his journal or his apprentice’s journal to complete this step.
A popup will inform you that you have learned something and a new Crusade Quest will start called Xanthir’s Experiment. Click on the Pass Decree. At this point, Anevia will warn you that your companions are concerned with your research into swarms. Do not pick the I don’t know what came over me option and you will be able to become the Swarm-That-Walks. Complete all of the research tasks before Chapter 4.
At the beginning of Chapter 5, you will return to Drezen to hunt down the Vescavor Queen you spared earlier. Kill the Queen and select the Devour the Queen option. You can only do so if you have completed Xanthir’s research. After devouring the Queen you will have unlocked the Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path.

Swarm Infest
You send a part of your swarm to infest an enemy. It makes the target blind and deals 8d8 physical damage each round. This damage increases by 2d8 for each point of your swarm size. If the target dies while under this effect. it’s automatically devoured. When the ability ends (by activating Swarm Form ability), you are healed for the amount of damage you’ve dealt to the enemy with Swarm Infest. Additionally, the target must make a Will saving throw (DC = 15 + double your mythic rank) or become panicked. Using this ability cancels Swarm Form.

Swarm Feast
Your swarm flies out of your body and starts attacking all enemies in 50 feet radius. Every round all enemies in the area are dealt (4 plus your swarm size) d6 physical damage. If they die while in the area, they are automatically devoured. Any ranged or ranged touch attacks against you have a 50% chance to miss.

Devour (Swarm-that-Walks)
You send a part of your swarm to devour a corpse to increase the size of your swarm.
The increase depends on the CR of the devoured corpse. When the amount of eaten enemies hits a threshold, you gain permanently increased bonuses from other Swarm-That-Walks abilities.

Swarm Clone
You gain the ability to make your own clones using the swarm. They have all your abilities, but separate inventory. You can simultaneously have one clone per three points of your swarm size.

Swarm Form
You return all of the swarm into your body. You gain DR 5/- plus your swarm size and a bonus to natural armor equal to (4 plus your swarm size). This ability cancels Infest.
Host of the Great Swarm
You become a Host of the Great Swarm, which now lives inside your body. This symbiosis gives you Fast Healing and additional hit points depending on the size of the swarm. To increase the size of the swarm you need to devour other living beings.
Eye of the Swarm
From now on, you are made of the Swarm. You gain damage reduction of a swarm and immunity to attacks of opportunity. You Strength and Dexterity ability scores increase by (4 plus your swarm size). You gain immunity to most effect affecting a normal mortal body, such as poison, disease, paralysis and stun.\nAdditionally, while Swarm Form is active, all your attacks deal additional (4 plus your swarm size) damage and any opponent that attacks you in melee combat is dealt (4 plus your swarm size) d6 of damage.
The Swarm
You become The Swarm. Your Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma ability scores are increased by 4 plus your swarm size, you gain Spell Resistance equal to 25 plus your swarm size, and you gain immunity to most harmful conditions.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — How to unlock the Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path
The Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is one of the most time-consuming and complicated options to get because of all the ways you can mess up. There’s even a decision which seems unrelated and innocuous at first, until you realize that it locks you out completely. Here’s our Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous guide to help you unlock the Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path.
Note: For more information, check out our Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous guides and features hub. Likewise, you can take a look at our main guide for all the Mythic Paths in the game. Lastly, please be reminded that this guide contains minor spoilers.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous – How to unlock the Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path
The first and probably the most important decision you need to make is at the start of Act II. In the Crusader’s Camp, you’ll be able to speak with Queen Galfrey. Do not tell her to join the crusade.
Yes, I know that many will probably make the mistake of having her join up because it seems like an okay decision at the time. Unfortunately, this will screw you over completely as I’ll explain below.
Fast forward and you should be able to enter the Leper’s Smile location. At the northern section of the highlands, you can kill the Vescavor Queen. After this, you have to pick the evil option so Anevia collects the Vescavor Queen’s slime.
Progress further until you assault the city of Drezen at the end of Act II. You have to choose the option to make the Vescavor plague spread, causing the locusts to appear in the city. If Queen Galfrey is with you, she’ll lead the charge. Likewise, she’ll also prevent you from taking this option as it causes severe casualties and damage.
But, if you’ve made the correct choices so far, you can continue onward and conquer Drezen. In Act III, you’ll receive a quest called Demonic Parasites where you’ll go to a house in the southern section of Drezen. Just examine the Vescavor Queen here but don’t kill it.
Next, progress further in the main quest until you fight Xanthir Vang. Ask him about his powers and find his notes in the room where he is. This gives you a decree called “Xanthir’s Experiments,” so make sure you complete it. Finally, at the start of Act V, you’ll be back at Drezen and the Vescavor Queen has fully matured. Interact with it and choose to eat it. This will unlock the Swarm-That-Walks Mythic Path once you hit Mythic Rank 8.
As for why it’s such a convoluted process, well, let’s put it this way: you are an insatiable entity that will devour all life and unlife. Because you pose a threat to the world, everyone will leave you except your little insect pals.

Pathfinder wrath of the righteous swarm that walks
I went the Swarm-That-Walks route in Act V, lost my entire party as intended. But I die so easily to anything, literally can’t beat a single encounter in any area, that I can’t imagine that this is viable or intended. The encounters depend on having a party of six for action economy. Nothing the Swarm gives me compensates for the loss of the entire party. This is on Normal, by the way, with my wizard (iconic for the Worm That Walks!)
Amusingly, I was given to understand that this was supposed to be the most powerful mythic path. Seems entirely the opposite to me as I play it.
Am I missing something here? How do you play Swarm-That-Walks successfully? Or is this a bug?
You need a solo build. I’m not sure if crusade mode wins add to your swarm size or not. I had it disabled by the time I transformed given how broken it was at launch. If it does then you can just sit back and accumulate swarm size by gobbling armies. If it doesn’t then you probably need an uber munchkin build that can hold solo given the mythic quest you get doesn’t bump you from 8 to 10 and only bumps you from 8 to 9, 1 rank shy of the clones you need to be able to deal with the mode.
I’m not sure if it’s intended this way or not.
Yes, it seems utterly unplayable at this juncture. The crusade mode does not add to your swarm size, I can definitely confirm.
You shouldn’t need to look up some weird munchkin build to play a character option on Normal. That just ain’t right. Maybe they just gave up on building this mythic path before they felt they needed to launch it.
Ironically, your crusade swarm armies feel really powerful and are quite enjoyable. it would be cool if they added to your swarm size.
You need to pre-buy 5 Mercs at Level 1 or 2. Then once Act 5 triggers, you have your Merc army ready i.e 5 mercs at the ready with all the classes you need. The Mercs stay loyal till the end and won’t bail on you. This is the best way. cleric, rouge are must haves due to amount of traps/chests and undead/heals required.
Imo id say Merc’s are required for Evil/Neutral path so any Companion that does not like it can leave and you can replace their slot with a Min/Max merc that will easily destroy the companion.
Did you test if this works? You can’t buy mercs after the Swarm transition («nobody wants to work with you!») Also, you can eat Hilor. Not recommended if you need to respec, obviously.
Even if it does work, are you seriously supposed to play this path with a combination of only-munchkin-builds allowed and merc exploiting? Doubt that’s what they’re going for. Not sure what’s going on.
Achievements say only 0.2% of all players have unlocked the Swarm at this point, but I’d love to hear from somebody who made this thing work to the end and what they ended up doing.
(I guess I can turn it to Story mode?)

Having tried to brute force my way through story as a swarm. It is a very long and agonizing experience because you still have to deal with the lack of ability to hit checks. Swarm clones are simply locked way too late in the path. You need religion to avoid getting dunked on by corruption and you need stealth to set your camp up and move around on the main map.
It’s a mess.
Hu, I’m a swarm and I’m immune to fatigue so there’s no need to sleep other than regaining abilities/spells, but maybe it’s a bug.
It’s still super annoying to be totally unable to pass half or more skill checks.
Oh and be ready to cheese every boss encounter, eye of the swarm + teleport to some weird areas worked for me.
Also the UI is a buggy mess, it doesn’t update correctly, and the aoe stance is not working at all.
Too bad I’m stuck in front of a door (Threshold) because Owlcat doesn’t care much about later acts.
Thanks for the developer attention. Awesome game, by the way!!
Regarding Swarm, it seems odd that we should need to wait to leave the map to add more swarm size. Some maps are very long and involved. Seems suboptimal.
I am also noticing my swarm armies spawning necromantic units after going from Lich to Swarm (straight bug).
