Troubleshooting Database Outages and Connection Issues

CONTENT

A suspected database outage can be a stressful event for everyone. Users become frustrated and worry their data might be lost, developers scramble to find the cause, and company stakeholders count every minute that might incur revenue loss.

Getting your database back to a healthy state in the event of an outage is priority one. However, it can be difficult to even reason about what the problem might be in the midst of such a stressful event. This article aims to help guide you through some of the most common reasons your database might be down and what you can do to fix it.

The article covers a variety of areas to look for when dealing with database outages, including:

ProblemPotential IssuesActions
Database appears to not accept connectionsProblems with database user credentials, problems with the connection string, connection limits reachedInspect database server logs to determine cause
Network communications seem impairedVPC and firewall issues, latency and timeouts between the application and databaseCheck firewall rules, looks for latency and timeouts, check for exhausted connection limits
Database server or application server is crashingPotential data volume issues causing database server and app server to reach resource limitsLook for large amounts of returned data, optimize queries, add indexes
Database server is up but app is not displaying dataPotential recent changes to code including schema changes, unapplied migrations, malformed queriesInspect source control history to look for recent changes and revert if necessary

The best time to read this article is long before your database goes down. If your database is already down, the second-best time is now.

Database Connection Issues

Clues from Application Logs

If your database appears to be down, your application logs might give you insight into any problems accepting requests or connecting to the database. Because the application server handles both client requests and requests to the database, it usually logs errors if there are problems with the database.

If you are using Prisma Client, you can configure logging to control how logs are generated.

Prisma is an open-source database toolkit for Typescript and Node.js that aims to make app developers more productive and confident when working with databases.

Is the application server handling connections successfully?

An application server which exposes an API and serves request by querying the database has two kinds of connections:

When debugging an outage, keep in mind that problems with both kinds of connections can cause the outage.

Application server frameworks usually come with a built-in logger. It’s common practice to log that the server can accept connections once the server has started.

For example, take a look at this log line:

The log shows that the server started and accepts connections at port 8000. But it’s not enough to determine if an error occurred since the server started.

The next step would be to look at the most recent logs and check the HTTP status code of the most recent requests to the server. Typically request logs will look as follows:

Each incoming request log contains a timestamp, the URL, and other information about the request. The first log indicates a request coming in, while the second shows that the request succeeded with the HTTP status code 200.

Were there any database errors recently?

Since you’re trying to debug a problem relating to the database, you should specifically look for failed requests. You can find these by filtering for requests with a response status code of 5xx, e.g., 500, that indicates a server error.

If you notice multiple requests with the 500 status code, look for the point at which these started and check for any other logged errors.

If the database is down or the database’s credentials are wrong, you can see that logged. For example:

The log above indicates that your application server can’t reach the database. In such cases, check the database URL in your application server.

If you are using Prisma Client, the error code reference can help diagnose what errors mean and how to fix them.

Database Problems Troubleshooting

Now that you know that your application server is running but cannot reach the database, the next step would be to determine why. It’s best to approach this by eliminating potential sources of the problem.

If you’re using a managed service for your database, check your cloud provider’s status page first. Most cloud providers provide a way to check if their infrastructure is operational, e.g. Digital Ocean, Google Cloud Platform, and AWS.

Once you’ve ruled out any problems with the cloud platform, the next thing to check is the logs or status of your database instance.

Managed Database Logs

If the managed database provider you are using appears to be operational, your next step would be to check the logs for your specific database instance.

Most cloud platforms provide a way to view database logs in addition to some metrics such as throughput and query statistics. The layout and level of detail for logs differ from one cloud provider to the next. However, most cloud providers offer a sufficient level of detail to help you search for problems.

Each cloud provider also has a different way to access the database logs. Most make the logs easily accessible from the deployment management page.

For example, DigitalOcean provides a tab called «Logs & Queries» accessible directly from the deployment management menu.

Network-related issues can cause your database to be unavailable or seem to be down. In a three-tier application consisting of the client tier, the application tier (the back end), and the data tier (the database), networking issues can arise between the three tiers.

Networking related issues include:

When your database appears to be down or unresponsive, and you suspect that this might be related to network problems, it’s best first to determine whether traffic is blocked to firewall policies or there are actual network problems.

Note: The recommendations below are based on assumptions that might not apply to your architecture. Hence it’s recommended to understand the failure modes and their causes when debugging issues with your database.

When provisioning cloud resources such as databases on cloud platforms, they are isolated within a virtual private cloud (VPC). In practical terms, the VPC serves as a private network for your application resources and is isolated from the public internet. If your database and application are not in the same VPC (or the same cloud), you typically need to configure the VPC’s firewall rules to allow the application’s IP access to the database.

When you deploy your application and database to different cloud platforms or different VPCs, you need to configure the firewall to allow access from the application to the database.

While some firewall policies use black hole policies to silently drop traffic that is not allowed, others send a rejected response which can help you determine if the firewall is responsible for the disrupted connection. Likewise, if you have a «no route to host» type error, that can mean either that a network segment is down or that the routing logic is incorrect.

Moreover, If your application’s IP is dynamic, it can change at any time. When the application’s IP changes, it might fail to connect to the database until the firewall has been updated to allow the new IP access.

Firewall Rules Remedies

It’s generally better to deploy the application and database in the same VPC and the same region so that the two communicate over a private network. It also prevents bottlenecks that public networks might incur. However, if that isn’t possible, there are several possible fixes.

The first approach would be to use a dedicated IP for your application and add a firewall rule allowing access from the IP. This approach ensures that you don’t need to update the firewall rules because the IP remains the same.

If using a dedicated IP is not feasible due to cloud platform limitations or the deployment approach, e.g., serverless, consider enabling access to the database via public networks. While this approach decreases the database’s security, it ensures that your application won’t experience any sudden downtime until you update firewall rules when your application’s IP changes. Moreover, your database’s authentication mechanism remains the main line of defense.

Please note that opening up connections to your database from the public internet is not recommended. Where possible, we recommend limiting connections to a specific IP address or using techniques such as VPC peering.

Latency and Timeouts

When the geographical and network distance between the application and database is substantial, increased request latency and timeout errors can be a problem. In such scenarios, increasing the database connection timeout in your application might be necessary to avoid timeout errors.

ORMs and query builders hold a pool of connections to the database. These connections usually have a connection timeout configuration that controls how long to wait before timing out when establishing a connection.

It’s recommended to set an initial baseline timeout value and load test the application to see how it performs. Based on the number of failed requests from the load test, you might want to adjust the timeout and try again until you’re confident that timeouts are not the cause of the problem. If your connection timeout configuration is too low, you run the risk of these timeouts leading to failed requests.

Exhausted Connection Limit

Another common challenge with connection-based databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL is that you can quickly exhaust the database’s connection limit. Connection-oriented databases impose a limit on the number of open connections to the database.

When you deploy your application using the traditional long-running process model, you can multiplex many incoming requests on fewer DB connections in a pool. For example, a single server instance might handle 100 concurrent HTTP requests with a pool of 20 DB connections.

On serverless functions, however, each function instance can only handle 1 HTTP request at a time. Because each incoming request requires at least one connection to the database, there is no way for you to multiplex database connections.

Given this, it’s recommended to use the database connection limit and then distribute those between the server instances that connect to it in a way that doesn’t exhaust the database’s connection limit. For example, suppose your database has a connection limit of 20. If you have two instances of your application server, you would want to set each server instance’s connection pool to a maximum of 10 connections.

For serverless deployments, consider running an external connection pooler like PgBouncer – an additional infrastructure component that holds connections to the database and multiplexes incoming database queries from the serverless functions.

Data Volume Issues

As an application grows, the data volume for that app will most likely grow as well. A key consideration for both performance and database uptime is the volume of data being processed to furnish a given request. Inefficient queries written for the app when the total data volume is small can turn into bottlenecks that can tank performance and cause outages when that data grows.

Large data volumes can have an impact at three locations:

The Database Server

When a database query is made from the app server, the database server’s responsibility is to retrieve the requested data and send it back to the app server. In doing so, the database server must first scan the retrieved data into its own memory. When data volumes are small, the process of scanning data into memory and forwarding it to the app server is trivial. However, if a very large amount of data is returned from the query, an underprovisioned database server can crumble under the load.

This scenario often arises when queries that were initially sufficient with a small total database size are not adequately optimized as the data size grows.

Consider a scenario where an application needs to display a list of contacts for a user. A typical database query to furnish this data likely selects data scoped to that user.

Depending on the needs of the application, the app server may not have anything further to do than to forward the results to the client. This query is unlikely to cause data volume problems.

However, consider what would happen if there was no WHERE clause in the above query.

If instead, the query asked for all contacts in the database and the app server was then responsible for filtering the list based on userId before forwarding the results to the client, the difference in data volume could be astronomical.

With relatively small overall data volumes, this inadequate query might go undetected. As data volumes grow, performance degradations might become noticeable but might not totally break the application. As this happens, however, the database server will be loaded beyond what it may be provisioned for. As data volumes continue to grow even further, a tipping point may be reached where the database server is no longer able to handle the load.

Much like the database server does not have unlimited capacity to process large volumes of data, the same is true for the app server. It’s possible that you have more control over capacity and sizing for your app server than you do for your database server, but increasing capacity on the app server may be unnecessary.

A large volume of data returned from the database server takes time and resources to process on the app server. If the app server is responding to a request from a client application, long waits at the app server can be problematic. Many cloud hosting providers enforce a request timeout after several minutes have passed. Web browsers will automatically retry requests after several minutes of a request sitting in a «pending» state, putting further strain on the system.

Client applications might be most susceptible to bottlenecks caused by large data volumes. Unlike the app server and database server, where you may have the ability to increase capacity, client applications that run in the browser or on mobile devices are subject to limitations of the browser, operating system, or both.

Sending an inordinately large volume of data to a client application will cause delays in processing and can severely degrade responsiveness. Once a given data size has been reached, the browser may become completely unresponsive and ultimately crash.

If very large data volumes are forwarded all the way from the database to the client, performance degradations will be felt every step along the way. This trifecta will lead to long load times and possibly a perceived outage at any one of these points. Compounding the problem, troubleshooting where the bottleneck exists can become difficult.

Data Size Remedies

The fix for performance degradations and outages caused by data volume issues is nearly always to limit the amount of data returned from the database server. Doing so will alleviate problems at the database server, the app server, and the client.

Scope Data with WHERE Clauses

In the fictitious query example above, the entire contacts table for a database was queried. This means the database server needs to scan the whole table into memory before filtering down to the desired results, which can put tremendous load on the database server and app server.

Start by looking for queries that are casting too wide a net. Chances are that these queries are taking a long time to process at the database server. Looking at the logs for long-running queries can give indications of where this is happening. Instead of returning many results and then filtering through them with app code, construct your queries to return the subset of results that are truly needed. In SQL, use the WHERE clause to get specific about the data you actually require.

Paginate Data with LIMIT and OFFSET

If large volumes of data are truly required for client applications, it’s advisable to introduce pagination.

Pagination is a design pattern that limits the total number of records to be queried and returned at a given time. If a user would like to see more records, they must request them explicitly.

This design pattern is most often implemented using the LIMIT and OFFSET clauses. By choosing to skip a certain number of records and also limiting the number of returned results, the client and app servers can achieve a pagination experience.

The query for the first page might look like this:

The query for the second page would then just set the value of LIMIT to the OFFSET value to get the next «page».

Troubleshooting Data Volume Issues

Most databases offer tools that can help troubleshoot data volume issues. In particular, many databases offer an EXPLAIN command, which will surface the execution plan for a query and offer insights into any associated problems.

For example, in PostgreSQL, the EXPLAIN command shows the query plan for the statements under consideration and will display estimated execution cost. This is an estimate of how long it will take the query to run.

This information can be helpful to narrow in on the specific tables or query statements that are causing bottlenecks.

In addition to manually calling the EXPLAIN command, many cloud database providers offer a way to automatically visualize the queries that are causing problems. This information is often found in the «Slow Queries» view for cloud providers. Check the Slow Queries section of your database provider to find which queries might be adversely impacting your application.

Problems associated with large data volumes can often be remediated using indexes.

Indexes for a database table can be conceptualized in the same way as an index in a book. If you were looking for information on a specific topic in a book, it would take a long time to read through the entire book to find it. Instead, you can consult the index to look up the specific topic of interest. If it exists, it will point you to the specific pages that the topic is discussed in the book.

The same concept is applied to database indexes. Adding indexes to a database table based on common access patterns allows for fast lookups.

For example, if you have a database table of users that contains a column for email and that table is queried to look for users based on their email, it helps to improve performance to create an index for that table based on the email column. Without the index, the whole table will be scanned to find the user by their email address. If the table size is very large, this can create significant performance issues. If, however, an index is created for that column, lookups will be fast because searching for a specific email will immediately point to the exact row that is needed.

Adding indexes to a database requires planning and consideration and is something that should be done before your database causes outages in your application. However, if you can find a specific query or queries responsible for producing the outage, it can be helpful to add an index to alleviate the strain immediately.

Breaking Code Changes

A suspected database outage might be traced back to recent breaking changes made to client or server code. In these cases, it is likely not the database itself experiencing an outage, but rather the code used to retrieve data, process it, and return it to the client may have broken.

Code changes that might cause interruptions generally fall into three categories:

Changes to database queries, even if they are small, can impact an application. If using raw SQL, a query statement might have become invalid in a recent code change. If the query itself is still valid, it might have been changed to return results that are no longer processable by other parts of the application.

Inspect source control changes to look for recent changes to database access (SQL statements or ORM usage). Try to isolate queries that are related to specific areas of the application that are impacted.

If there are no indications of changes to database access, another possibility is that the database schema has changed, but migrations have not been run. Look for any recent migrations that might still need to be applied to the production database.

Client and Server Code

Code changes to app code in the client or the server, even if small, can have the potential of creating what looks like a database outage. There are many specific issues that could be at the root of the problem, but some examples include:

Database outages, regardless of the underlying cause, can be very stressful events. In the rush to try to get the application back up and running, it can be difficult to properly reason about where the database problems might be originating.

Every database outage is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when one occurs. However, being well-versed in possible problems and their associated solutions can help you determine the cause of the problem more efficiently and reduce the time it takes to getting back up and running.

As with most problem solving, it’s best to become familiar with potential solutions to problems before they happen. We hope this guide helps you on your way to achieving just that.

Before we go any further, let’s start with a few basics about proxies and with this q‌uestion: “What does connection timeout mean?” A proxy acts as an intermediary server between yourself and a website. It handles communications between web browsers and applications by sending and receiving data requests. After a browser or server submits a request, it awaits a response for a specified period.

Any delay that prevents the browser or server from receiving a response typically leads to a website timing out. The error tells you that you shouldn’t sit around waiting. Timeout errors prevent you from wasting time hoping that your streaming platform will finally load. The length of time that passes before your browser presents you with a timeout error depends on its settings.

The worst thing about server timeouts is that they’re generally opaque. Yes, it’s nice to be made aware of the problem, but it would be better if those error screens gave you just a little more information. Luckily, it is possible to get to the bottom of most timeout errors as long as you’re willing to dig a little deeper.

What Are Some Causes of Proxy Timeout Errors?

There are many reasons why you could be getting a timeout error on your proxy. That’s part of why these errors are so frustrating. Let’s take a look at some common problems that could lead to a timeout when your proxy attempts to make a connection. The suggestions below may help you figure out how to fix a connection timeout.

1. Poor internet connection

A bad internet connection can be one reason for a proxy timeout error like “connection timed out Firefox.” First, look at the status bar at the bottom of your computer screen. There should be an icon that allows you to view all available internet connections. Click on it to see whether you’re connected or if there is some kind of issue in the way that’s causing you to get a message stating that your error proxy connection failed. In addition, check out your modem for any flashing lights or other signs of a problem.

You can also try running a diagnostic test on your internet connection. This may enable you to identify the problem and work out some fixes to address why the connection has timed out on certain websites. If all else fails, try turning off your modem, waiting 30 seconds, then turning it back on. Rebooting your modem can resolve various internet connection problems and wireless issues if you encounter a problem like “connection timed out Firefox.”

2. Software blocking connection

Antivirus software is a life-saver. It keeps viruses from infecting your computer, which can cause havoc. Any computer with an internet connection requires antivirus software protection. But one of the drawbacks of these programs is that they can get a little overzealous in their attempts to keep your computer bug-free.

For example, your antivirus software may detect evidence of a bad proxy trying to get to your computer. The program adds it to a list of suspicious connections, preventing it from making another access attempt. However, problems arise when your antivirus software senses that you are trying to use a proxy server and adds this to its list of banned sites.

The easy fix is to disable your antivirus software and go on your merry way. But, for myriad reasons — the main one being that you’re pretty much inviting hackers to have a go at stealing your info — you should not take that route. In this day and age, you need something that keeps your computer free of viruses and malware.

What you can do is go into your antivirus software and unblock your proxy. Make sure the site you’re using is completely safe. The last thing you want is for an unsafe proxy to have free rein on your computer.

Another way you can use your proxy on a computer with antivirus software is to configure the antivirus solution such that proxies are allowed. Then, if there’s an issue connecting through the proxy, the antivirus program can still connect directly to the internet. Going this route should cut down on the number of timeouts caused by your antivirus.

The AVG solution is a great way to configure your antivirus software for proxy use. One thing to keep in mind is that, if you switch over to your regular web settings, you will not have the ability to surf the internet anonymously. If you’re not comfortable with that, make sure that your computer always uses your proxy connection.

3. Program doesn’t exist

Another reason your proxy might have websites timing out is that it’s trying to connect to a nonexistent server. If that’s the cause of your timeout error when you are using a proxy, then the issue should be resolved if you update the internet address.

4. Network problems

When you send a request from your proxy, it typically goes through several checkpoints as it tries to connect to your target application server. If the traffic around those checkpoints becomes too much, you could end up with a proxy timeout error. That can happen if, for example, the router controlling traffic around a network gets overloaded with requests from multiple computers also using that network.

5. Firewall blocking proxy

Sometimes, firewall configuration issues can cause conflicts between your firewall and your proxy. Look at your current firewall setup if you think that’s the cause of your proxy timeout issues. Your firewall may be blocking the connection, regardless of whether it’s a safe proxy. Update the settings of your firewall to ensure that it allows connections through your proxy.

You may have to disable or uninstall your computer firewall while using your proxy, which is why you must verify the safety of your chosen proxy. Disabling or removing your firewall leaves your computer more vulnerable to cyber threats.

Tips on Clearing Up Proxy Timeout Errors

Now that we’ve gone over some common causes of timeout errors and potential solutions, let’s look at some other ways to fix connection timeout when the root cause isn’t clear.

1. Clear out your browser cache

It’s sometimes best to start by clearing your browser cache, even before rebooting. Errors may be a result of whatever is being held there. Look up the instructions for cache clearing in your specific internet browser. There’s usually a button in the settings that you can push to get rid of old items in your cache.

2. Update your browser

You may be getting timeout issues because you’re still using an outdated internet browser. Even though you may have nostalgia for an old version of Internet Explorer, you’re likely going to have to move on and upgrade if you want to stop your proxy from running into timeout errors.

3. Get rid of problematic extensions

It seems there’s a browser extension available for everything under the sun. However, these may not all be completely compatible with your browser. A bad extension can result in a proxy timeout error. Go through each of the extensions in your browser, and make sure they are working correctly. If not, then you should disable the extension or remove it entirely.

Avoid Proxy Timeout Errors With the Right Proxy Solution

The best thing you can do to avoid timeout errors is find a good proxy solution. While there are public proxies available, you could run into security issues if there are issues with the maintenance and attention given to specific proxies on a regular basis. With private proxies, you typically have a choice between dedicated and semi-dedicated proxies.

Semi-dedicated proxies

With a semi-dedicated proxy, you get more security because the server is closed to the general public. Only a limited list of users receive access at the same time. That keeps the proxy from getting bogged down by too much traffic. Semi-dedicated proxies are best used for anonymous browsing. It’s better not to use one if you’re interested in creating accounts or setting up social media.

Semi-dedicated proxies also give you less control over the location of your proxy. If you’re a gamer, you may run into problems with popular companies like Blizzard and EA because they restrict the use of a shared proxy. You can check out options from Rayobyte to look for one that fits your needs.

Fully dedicated proxies

Just as the name implies, a fully dedicated proxy provides you with exclusive use, meaning you don’t have to share the server with anyone else. You also control whether your proxy is located in the U.S., Europe, or other reliable locations. In addition, you can obtain rotating proxies that provide you with one IP address operating from multiple ports.

If you opt for a Rayobyte proxy solution, you also receive the following benefits:

A private proxy is often the best way to prevent issues caused by an error proxy connection failure when you’re left wondering “what does that proxy error mean?”

When your internet connection times out and you can’t access a specific webpage, it’s one of the most annoying errors. The message «The webpage not available» ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT will appear on the screen. This error usually occurs when there is an issue with the internet connection and the website does not load. The name of this error can be seen in the notification on your screen. A browser like chrome provides three options to address the problem when a website or webpage takes too long to respond or the connection times out.

These are the limited approaches that do not effectively combat these issues. You must take further steps to address this issue. If you don’t know what the other options are, you’ll find them all in this article. We’ve compiled a list of the most effective ways to clear the error from your browser. You also don’t have to be concerned because these solutions don’t need any technical knowledge. You can use these solutions on your own.

We will go over the following:

What is ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT Error?

The connection timed out error isn’t a dangerous error, nor is it an infected file that can harm your computer. This message primarily serves as a warning that the system has been unable to establish a network connection with the server.

Let’s start with a basic understanding of how the internet works. When a user types a keyword or the URL of a website into the search box, the system makes a request to the server to provide access to the website’s content. The connection is created once the server checks the request and grants access to the system, and the data packets are shared between the system and the server.

The internet’s working procedure is as follows. When a user asks for access from a website, a countdown or timer begins to run, and if the request is not able to reach the user before the countdown expires, the Err connection timeout happens.

It could also imply that your website is receiving more requests than it can handle. This is especially true if your hosting provider has a RAM cap. When you wait more than 30 seconds for an answer, you know there’s a problem with communication. Your browser such as chrome and internet explorer will then cancel the connection to the unresponsive page and display the error message «ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT.»

An error page does not provide complete information about the source of the problem; it merely informs you about the issue. Depending on the device you’re using, the error message may have somewhat different phrasing. This includes the following:

In a nutshell, the server, your network connection, your device, or the network equipment could all be to blame.

Causes for ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT Error

These are the few reasons that cause ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT Error:

How to Fix the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT Error?

Depending on the cause of the error, we have a number of options for resolving the problem. Obtaining an appropriate solution is the greatest method to eliminate errors. You can start with the first way and then move on to the second if it doesn’t find and fix the problem. Attempt till your problem is fixed. Also, use caution when using these procedures, and be sure to follow each step.

Here are the 11 ways to consider while solving the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT error:

Solution 1: Restart Your Internet Connection

There’s a good chance you’ll run into this issue, especially if there’s a major internet outage. As a result, it is critical to ensure that the network connection is in perfect functioning order. Apart from that, have a look at the subject of properly verifying and connecting the hardware components. Keep a close eye on the situation to see if there is anything that took too long to respond with the internet connection.

If you’re using a wireless network connection or router to connect to the internet, make sure it can connect to many devices. Then check to see if the internet is operating properly on those devices as well. If no such internet difficulties are discovered, there may be other factors at play.

Also, make sure the terrible connection isn’t caused by a slow Wi-Fi connection. Disconnect from public Wi-Fi first to get things in order. Then, to see if you’re linked to poor or insufficient Wi-Fi, purchase a modem for personal usage.

If the internet and other issues are operating well, move on to the next solution.

Solution 2: Disable Your Firewall and Antivirus Software

Antiviruses and firewalls are in charge of keeping your files and systems safe. As a result, they scan your computer for viruses on a regular basis. Installing firewalls and antiviruses has the disadvantage of causing the timed out error. They may restrict or prohibit certain pages that they believe you don’t need, even if they are safe.

If you’re getting the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT page or other errors like this, you can turn off your firewall and antivirus. Before disabling these programs, make sure the page you’re trying to access is safe. Remember to turn on your firewall and antivirus software once you’ve finished with the website you were trying to access. Then, to protect against real attacks from malicious sites, reactivate the cybersecurity systems.

If you continue to see the timed out error message and are confident that the websites you’re trying to access are safe, you should alter or update your firewall and antivirus software. Another option is to create a false-proof report and send it to the software developer, who will then fix the problem. These are the false-proof fast links:

Solution 3: Disable Proxy Server Settings or VPN

Checking the proxy server settings is another typical remedy recommended by web browsers including chrome, internet explorer, and so on.

A proxy server acts as a go-between for your computer and the website you’re looking at. Its goal is to secure the user’s IP address, control which websites can be accessed, and cache site data to speed up page loading.

However, proxy servers may mistakenly block the website you want to visit, resulting in the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT message. Reset your proxy settings to see if these servers are the source of the problem.

For Windows:

For Mac:

Those who use a VPN service may also experience the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT issue. If that’s the case, we recommend switching VPN protocols because your ISP or firewall may have prohibited the one you’re currently using. Alternately, try temporarily disabling the application.

Solution 4: Clear Browser Cache

All browsers including chrome save a cache of information on your computer, which includes your browser cookies, history, and saved login information. This information is saved so that the relevant web pages load faster the next time you visit them.

The cache that is saved is useful and saves you time, but it can also cause a slew of problems. Thankfully, emptying your cache will cure the problem quickly.

For that, you must find that your browser’s cache is the genuine culprit of the “This Site Can’t Be Reached” error. So, to confirm, complete the procedures below.

To Clear Cache for Google Chrome:

Click the three dots icon in the top right corner of your Google Chrome browser to open it. From the drop-down option, choose More Tools and then Clear Browsing Data.

Select the one that applies to you:-

To Clear Cache For Mozilla Firefox:

To clean the cache in Mozilla Firefox, open the browser and click the Hamburger icon in the upper right corner. Select History from the drop-down menu that opens, and then Clear Recent History from the menu that appears next.

To clear your Mozilla Firefox browser cache data, select Everything from the time period to the clear the drop-down menu and click the Clear Now button.

To Clear Cache for Internet Explorer:

Click the setting button in the top right corner of the Internet Explorer browser to clear the cache. Select Safety from the drop-down menu and then erase browsing history. Make sure the Temporary Internet files and Website files boxes are checked in the delete browsing history window, then click the delete button at the bottom.

To Clear Cache for Microsoft Edge:

To clear the cache in Microsoft Edge, go to the 3 Dots icon in the top right corner of the browser and select the setting at the bottom of the screen. Click the Choose what to clear button under the Privacy, search, and services tab. Make sure the Cached images and files box is checked, then click the Clear button.

Solution 5: Change the DNS Server

A DNS server helps the browser find the website you wish to visit by converting domain names to IP addresses. In most cases, your ISP’s in-house DNS servers will be configured on your internet connection settings. They may, nevertheless, not find and deliver the finest results.

As a result, many users choose to utilize Google Chrome or Cloudflare’s third-party DNS servers, which are both free and dependable for the ordinary user.

Consider switching DNS servers if you believe they are the source of the problem. Using Google Chrome’s Public DNS IP addresses as an example, the tutorials below will show you how to update a network’s DNS settings.

For Windows:

For Mac:

Solution 6: Flush Out and Renew DNS

The term «flush DNS» refers to the process of clearing your computer’s DNS caches.

The DNS cache saves information about the websites you visit. Each time you visit the website, the computer will not have to translate the domain name to the IP address from the beginning.

The DNS cache, like browser data, can become out of date. It’s possible that the IP addresses are outdated, took too long to respond when trying to access the website.

For Windows:

The Command Prompt in Windows can be used to flush DNS. To activate the Run command, press the Windows logo and R keys at the same time. Then, in the dialogue box, input «cmd» and click OK.

In the Command Prompt window, type:

Then, to troubleshoot the network and renew the IP address, add the following lines. Each time you add a new command, make sure you press Enter:

When you’re done, restart your computer and open your browser to see if the commands worked.

For Mac:

Open the Terminal application on your Mac and type the following command:

Solution 7: Check the Hosts File

All connections between IP addresses and their related domain names are mapped in the hosts’ file. The computer will find and verify this document every time you visit a website to see which IP address matches the website’s domain.

The hosts’ file may have inadvertently blacklisted a specific IP address or URL, rendering the website inaccessible. As a result, it’s a good idea to find if the document has blacklisted the website you want to visit.

For Windows:

To read the Windows hosts file in Windows, you’ll need a text editor like Notepad. Type the application’s name into the taskbar’s search box and right-click it. Select the Run as administrator option.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\

After that, choose the hosts file.

Below the last line that begins with the «#» sign, the file will display a list of blacklisted websites. Delete them and save your changes by pressing Ctrl + S.

For Mac:

Users on macOS can open Terminal, type the following line, and press Enter:

Remove any URLs that are listed below the “::1” line.

Solution 8: Change the LAN Settings

Some of your internet settings may have been harmed by a virus, or you may have made some changes inadvertently. As a result, it is preferable to alter these settings.

If the error persists, it is unlikely that proxy or LAN settings are the source of the problem. As a result, switch to a different method.

Solution 9: Check the Maximum Execution Time

A PHP script’s maximum execution time is the maximum amount of time it can execute on a website. This is normally pre-configured by the hosting provider, with a standard timed out setting of 30 seconds.

If the script runs for longer than the specified time, the website will be unable to communicate with the browser, resulting in an ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT error.

The good news is that the upper limit can be increased. Hosting providers can enable this capability through the user’s control panel, or they can do it for the customer if they ask for it.

Solution 10: Increase PHP Memory Limit

Some PHP scripts may consume more memory than they are permitted, causing the site to take an excessive amount of time to reply to the browser.

The memory limit, like the maximum execution duration, can be increased. However, the quantity should not exceed the amount of memory allotted to your plan by your hosting provider.

Solution 11: Return Your Browser to the Default Setting

If none of the preceding fixes work and you’re still seeing the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT message, try restoring your browser’s default settings. The issue could be caused by a setting in your browser, so restore it to its normal state.

You can revert your browser to its default settings by doing the following:

How to Prevent “ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT” from Happening in the Future?

The ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT error is most common when the accessed web address has a temporary difficulty. It normally vanishes after a few minutes. User factors, on the other hand, can sometimes have a role. The following will explain will help you avoid making the same mistake again.

And It’s a Wrap.

Since it is difficult to trace the source of network connection and timed out errors, they can be exceedingly unpleasant. More importantly, you most likely just want to find and get information quickly. These solutions that we have presented are correct, and you can utilize them without difficulty. Hopefully, the information in this article will assist you in resolving any future timed out issues.

Please note that VPN connections from China are not possible using Proton VPN.

There is a problem with your WiFi connection

Try getting closer to your router. If that fails, try resetting your router (turn it off, wait at least 10 seconds, then turn it on again). Restarting your PC can also fix many connection problems.

There is a problem with your internet service provider (ISP)

This may be due to maintenance being performed in your area, poor reception (if using a mobile connection), a technical problem, or a problem with your account. You can identify if the problem lies with your ISP by connecting over a different network (for example, using your phone as a mobile hotspot rather than WiFi).

If the issue lies with your ISP then you can wait to see if it resolves itself (maintenance is completed, the technical issue is fixed, etc.) or you can contact your ISP.

Your antivirus software is interfering with the VPN connection

Antivirus software may incorrectly interpret the connection to our VPN server as suspicious. Temporarily disable or remove your virus software to help identify the problem.

If the connection works when your antivirus software is removed or disabled, try adjusting its settings or adding an exclusion for the Proton VPN app.

A proxy or firewall is interfering with the VPN connection

Note that many offices, schools, and similar, require the use of a proxy to access local network resources. If this is an issue, contact your network administrator.

Proxies are sometimes configured inside your browser. I use your VPN (last version) for my PC with Win10-64 without problem. IN last time I sometime lost original internet about 1-3min. After I got internet your VPN can not reconnect and I lost VPN. How to solve above problem.

Hello Radenko, that is probably because the application tried to reconnect for some time and failed to do so, and since so, it stopped to reconnect since there was no internet and it could do nothing, so when internet came back, you had to manually reconnect to the VPN.

I have used Proton VPN for a while now. I have always had an intermittent problem with connecting, being told that killswitch is blocking connection, but now the problem is permanent and I haven’t been able to use Proton for a long time. Other VPNs work fine. Any help appreciated..

Hello,
I tried out Proton-VPN this weekend and at first glance it worked very well. Therefore first of all, I’d like to thank you, for this nice piece of software!

Unfortunately i discovered some aspect, which I didn’t like at all:
– It was not possible to use my regular ethernet-adapter anymore (Without Proton-VPN). OnlyWiFi still worked.
After I uninstalled ProtonVPN, everything started working again as before.
As I want to be able to decide wether I use WiFi, Ethernet or VPN, I don’t want to use ProtonVPN at the moment anymore…
As I really liked the software (and especially the interface) I hope this might get fixed, or others don’t have this issues…
Best wishes
Ben

I have restarted my pc and tried uninstalling and reinstalling protovpn but it dosent seem to help

Hello Zavier.
Please uninstall our application, then go to Device manager on your pc, – network adapters – Uninstall TAP-ProtonVPN and then restart your computer.
After doing so, install ProtonVPN application again and test the connection. If you still face the same issue, we recommend contacting our support team via our support form.

ProtonVPN is working perfectly on my Raspberry Pi. BUT no luck with my Win 7 32 Professional on my netbook. The App crashes upon authentication with a bluescreen. Uninstall, delete appdata, delete TUN-TAP, reistall to no avail. Same again.

Hello Peter,
Could you please contact our support team with more detailed information about your system?

Log in successfully but cannot connect any server, always “time out”. Only on PC, it works on my mobile well.

Noticing strange activity while connected to ProtonVPN lately. Whenever I’m connected, even if there is no user activity, I see that there is an enormous amount of traffic/data being downloaded. Disconnecting and reconnecting solves this. Is this a bug? Why is this happening?

I’m having a problem recently with ProtonVPN. My problem basically I can log in no problem but I cannot connecting to any server.
I tried all the solutions suggested above but non of them worked with me
When I hit connect button I get the loading line moving from the left to the right and at the end I end up with a message says “Connecting failed”

Hi.
When I start app in Win7 x64 I see ‘Invalid refresh token’

Hello, we apologize for the inconvenience. Please completely re-install the application in order to get a fresh&clean version, and the issue should be resolved. In the process, please follow these steps:

-Completely uninstall the ProtonVPN application
-(IMPORTANT) Open up the %LOCALAPPDATA% or C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local and delete the ProtonVPN folder found there.
-Restart your device

After you’ve done that, download&install a new fresh version of the Windows application through the following link:

i still get Bluesreen by establish VPN Tunnel by Windows VPN Software under Win7 pro 64 Bit. Thats happen again and again after checking username and password. The Error message are like “IRQ are not equal or less” or like this. They are no other problems with the pc. From my opinion it sounds like ethernet driver. Depend on this, I installed the newest one. The Bluescreen still come by establish VPN Tunnel.

Hey Leo, your issue might require some extensive troubleshooting, so it would be best if you could contact us via https://protonvpn.com/support-form and our technicians will help you out!

This is not ready for prime time, unreliable for me. I’ve installed/uninstalled twice. VPN on windows works for awhile and then suddenly can’t connect or log on. Troubleshooting didn’t work for me. Android also unreliable. Sticking with PIA for another year.

I’ve done everything that was explained but my username and password will not work; I did click on the option to reset password, but it gave me a reset code, and I cannot use that as a temporary password. I tried it in the password field along with my username, and I keep getting the error “Incorrect Login Credentials”. How do I login?

Hey, at first please check whether you are able to log in to ProtonVPN website. Also, please keep in mind that both your username and password are case-sensitive.

I have followed the instructions for fixing the login problems for the ProtonVPN windows client, but it failed. I even switched between multiple adapters and connected to different wifis. Are there any other possible solutions to this? Thanks in advance

Hi. I have been running ProtonVPN (free version) since its launch and everything has been working fine. Today I upgraded to ProtonVPN 1.0.4.0 as recommended and ever since then ever time I launch the VPN I get an error message saying “failure to resolve free server IP address”. What am I doing wrong please?

I must be doing something wrong, but I can’t guess what. I have long been using Windows 7 on my desktop PC with the TOR Browser and ProtonMail. When I couldn’t get into, e.g., my bank account, I added Kaspersky Safe Banking. Not sure what it does, but at least I get there. When ProtonVPN came along, I added that (the free version), but it would frequently drop its connection, which was tiresome. And I don’t understand what it does for me; I still need everything else. When today’s upgrade came in, I took it, but it wiped out TOR and its Firefox Browser, so I undid it by restoring yesterday’s system. Do I really need ProtonVPN?

Jon, I went through exact same issue, i.e. win7, Proton, & TOR. This worked for me:
1. Uninstall and remove all instances of Proton (Program Files & User)
2. Uninstall & remove ProtonTAP
3. I had a manual config/certificate setup that often worked more steadily than winNativeApp, I removed manual config, along with coinciding manual certificate installed
4. I use(d) OpenVPN GUI along with another VPN provider whose been in VPN game for 20 years, over 3,000 servers, 200 countries, and all that good stuff. The ONLY way I got ProtonVPN to work consistently maintaining quick speed, few to no drops (over past 2 months) was to uninstall and remove OpenVPN GUI and all associated files, configs, etc. and do the same for my extremely fast VPN with top notch security intrusion prevention, etc. THAT WAS NOT EASY. However, my utmost concern is security for my business and my clients. That said, I respect & trust ProtonTechnologies (reference the email we all received circa 2 months ago regarding a large-scale hack attack Proton endured. Did the large scale Proton intrusion attempts severely effect us as users in negative way? Nope. Proton preemptively segmented servers used, and continued to encrypt user data in transit in addition to maintaining strong encryption on data at rest. Most want super speeder connection speed understandably, but personally I’m more than happy to sacrifice a few minutes a day in return for impeccable security. Proton most likely would’ve slid under the radar avoiding customer scrutiny had they decided not to email users. After all, it didn’t appear to impact us users much. All that said, ProtonVPN informed customers ASAP knowing they stood literally nothing at all to gain. They could only lose, and potentially lose very big with a mass customer exodus. Despite the unfortunate situation, Proton took the road less traveled and were honest, ethical, and up-front throughout. That day for the first time I actually gained some trust in a tech company. Never thought that would happen.
Directly after Proton’s transparent email blast, Took deep look at OpenVPN GUI & other VPN Provider who supports UDP, TCP, IPSec, L2TP, IKEv2, OpenVPN(tcp & udp).

OpenVPN release 2.4.6 I believe, offers a daemon legacy protocol, OpenVPN’s newer Interactive Service Protocol (which allows non-admin users), & openvpnserv2 to be ran as admin only & much more secure. My other VPN Provider stayed in-line with OpenVPN sustaining legacy, interactive, and admin OpenVPN protocols. BIG PROBLEM AROSE:
Now NONE of my VPN Clients could resolve at all, no connection, nothing. TOR actually would resolve. However, when I returned to my websites and other ip destinations using TOR vs my typical OpenVPN, IPSec/L2TP, or IKEv2, every site was either blocking my incoming request bc I was using TOR or the sites that answered my incoming request made me jump through 1000 hoops to establish who I was, verify myself, and continually reverify ultimately forcing me to reset most passwords for said sites. It was a pain. After clearing all OpenVPN remnants and strictly utilizing ProtonVPN, I have not had a single issue since. Killswitch dropped internet once (for about 3 seconds) and quickly reconnected back good to go and secure!!

DO NOT FORGET THAT EMAIL. I repeat, do not forget it. You may not see written correspondence like that again.

Everybody has their own agenda.
Rarely do we get to see a company’s true agenda. It’s often masked with layers of mush & telling us what they think we want to hear. Proton Technologies showed their hand and that was potentially sacrificing themselves for the betterment of users. Thank you Proton!!

And if anybody knows the technicalities of why OpenVPN seems to get crissed-crossed at times when you use VPN on the reg that’d be awesome. Hope this helps! Thanks!
