Witch Union

The Witch Union is an organization that takes in and protects witches from across the Kingdom of Graycastle; formed from what remained of the former organization Witch Cooperation Association. They are based in the Border Area of the City of Neverwinter, with its senior members holding important positions in the government.

Background [ ]

The Witch Cooperation Association was originally formed by a few witches, including Cara, Scroll, and Wendy, in the Sea Wind Region who wished to protect themselves from persecution. They made their shelter in a forest and avoided contact with mortals.

Cara found a secret entrance in their shelter and discovered a book she called the Holy Book that talked about the devils. After the Church attacked their shelter, Cara decided to use the information in the book to lead her sisters to the Holy Mountain, a place rumored to be where witches can go through their Day of Awakening with no pain and live peacefully. [1]

Chronology [ ]

First two witches Roland met were local inhabitants Anna and Nana from Border Town. Soon after that Roland met with Nightingale who came to take them away where they would be safe among other witches. To Nightingale’s surprise, she was rejected and invited to stay with them. [2]

Weeks spent in Border Town changed her view of Roland and she agreed to bring all Association witches to Border Town. [3] However, Cara didn’t believe her. Furthermore, she captured Nightingale and threatened to kill her unless she admitted being tricked by Roland. Nightingale managed to escape thanks to Wendy, who got gravely injured in the process. Together with Wendy and Lightning, who left voluntarily, she returned to Roland. [4]

Wendy swears loyalty to Roland, sparking the Union’s birth.

Meanwhile, the Witch Cooperation Association went to the Barbarian Land where they were attacked by demons and scattered. [5] The remaining seven members who survived cold, demonic beasts, and Day of Awakening went to Border Town. There Roland formed new organization of 12 witches and called it Witch Union. [6]

Since its founding, the Witch Union was slowly integrated into Border Town (later the City of Neverwinter), with Nana and Anna being their most public members, while Scroll was highly respected for her position as a minister in city hall. Other witches like Soraya and Leaf helped with more basic needs for the town. Less than a year later, the Witch Union was made public knowledge and most of its members were helping out with industrial production or exploration. With the destruction of the Church and Timothy’s reign ended, the Witch Union no longer had any enemies to fear from humanity.

A few members from Sleeping island and Bloodfang association also joined the Witch Union. Among the guests from Sleeping island, only Evelyn and Candle associated themselves with the witch union, while Slyvie associated herself with Tilly despite never returning back to the sleeping Island like Lotus and Honey.

By the Battle of Divine Will Saga, the Witch Union is officially recognized as its own division of the government; Wendy holds the rank equal to a minister as she is the leader of the Witch Union but isn’t officially a minister like the rest of the City Hall officials.

The organization’s final and current base is inside Border Town. They currently stay inside the castle but there are already plans for building a separate base for the Union’s exclusive use.

Strength [ ]

When the Witch Cooperation Association settled in Western Region, the organization had 65+ members. [7] Two twin witches died during Day of Awakening, and Nightingale, Wendy and Lightning left after conflict with Cara.

Thanks to Roland’s revelation that they can completely negate the chance of death during their Day of Awakening and increase their proficiency in the use of their magic through daily usage, the witches individual skill and magic capacity greatly improved compared to before. Roland also helped them discover the possibility of their magic evolving, greatly increasing and diversifying what they can do in and out of combat.

Membership [ ]

The Witch Cooperation Association didn’t discriminate between combat and auxiliary witches and accepted all witches who wished to join them. They would also use Scroll’s and Nightingale’s abilities to locate newly awakened witches or witches in hiding to recruit them. After realizing that kidnapping girls from their homes would only draw hatred, they opted to observe potential members for a period of time before offering an invitation.

After their reformation into the Witch Union, their method of adding new members changed drastically. Below are the members of the current incarnation of the group; with every fifth member marked for convenience of counting membership.

Witches are a species derived from mortals found in the world of Release that Witch.

Appearance [ ]

With the exception of greater physical beauty and faster body health regeneration, there are no major physical differences between normal people and witches. They can also have unnatural hair color, as seen in the picture to the right with Sylvie (top) and Shavi (middle).

Background [ ]

Witches are mortal women who start to absorb magic power, and become a new species. Witches awaken their powers at a random moment in their lives, usually during puberty; if a woman doesn’t awaken by the time they turn 18, they will never be a witch for their rest of their lifespan. Witches are sterile, perhaps due to the fact that they have magic power and cannot share it with mortals. Roland, however, believes it may be due to witches being an evolved form of humanity and thus have genetic difference that make their DNA incompatible for reproduction with old humanity.

About 1 out of 100 women can become a witch, and then only 1 in 10 witches exhibit «combat» powers, this includes Extraordinaries. Evolution may unlock combat powers for initially non-combat witches.

There are 3 important events for a witch:

Witches can feel an awakening call. Magic power would gather inside a witch’s body on the aforementioned Day of Awakening. During this process, a witch would not only be able to feel the weird changes inside her body, but also, for a majority of witches, they would be unable to restrain the strange magic power, causing them to use their newly-gained ability involuntarily.

For witches who awakened only near the end of adulthood, it was as if they never had a Day of Adulthood. Their magic powers were never able to develop and thus remained in the pre-adulthood form forever. Naturally, they didn’t have the derivative skills and steady growth that were unique to adulthood. We don’t know if such witches were able to have High Awakenings, but if they were unable to develop, the problems with their magic power would bug them for the rest of their lives. [2]

The self-reinforcing witches are called Extraordinaries. These witches never suffer magic energy backlash as their bodies are always using magic energy. They are also immune to the effects of God stone of Retaliation, and can use them offensively. Evolved Extraordinaries are called Transcendants.

The red mist required for the Demons’ respiration is fatal to witches.

Abilities [ ]

A witches’ body gathers magic energy starting from the day they awaken. This fuels their magic ability(ies). What kind of magic ability they have can’t be determined beforehand, but upon awakening the witch mysteriously ‘knows’ what her ability is. Witches also get the following enhancements after awakening: slight self-healing, physical beauty, slower aging, in general live healthier, and the temperament is changed too. [3]

Though it can vary, witches have greater resistance to getting drunk. Wendy and Scroll get drunk off one bottle, while Lightning has outdrunk numerous sailors before being legal drinking age.

Overview [ ]

Magic is a specific type of energy which allows its wielders to bend conventional laws in specific ways according to their abilities. Humans only demonstrate magical abilities on a small percentage of the female population. This women only start demonstrating magic use after what is called an awakening, a painful process in which magic is fused with their body forming a magic cyclone.

There appers to be no possible way of determining what a witch’s magic ability will be beforehand. To use magic, the witch must utilize the magic power found within themselves as fuel and once the witch runs out of magic power, they become unable to use their magic. The complexity of the Magic power of a witch can be test with a Five-Colors Stone, it shows a light beam, representing the complexity of the ability. [2]

All of the participants in the Battle of Divine Will are capable of some sort of magic use: humans through random abilities manifested in some women, demons through the absorption of Magic stones, the Underground Civilization through technology (magic cores) and the Deep Sea Demons through the evolution speed up.

Spoiler Warning
Magic wasn’t originally native to the known universe of the story and only came to it with the execution of Project Gateway. With the opening of the rift between universes, a gigantic amount of energy entered the main universe and mixed itself with it. However, due to the different properties of this energy, a lot of beings died due to being unable to adapt to it. Some of the ones that were able to do it are the ones in The Cradle, the world covered in the story. [3]

Magic can be understood as a special type of energy with weird properties. It isn’t light nor does it have temperature, it isn’t made up of particles nor waves, it changes via a will and changes the mind of possessor of the will in exchange for its use and it doesn’t follow the same laws from the known universe. [3]

Categories [ ]

The magic of witches are categorized as follows:

Summoning [ ]

This kind of magic could be summoned outside of their body – yet the area of effect was only about five meters or less. Witches that fell under this category were the witches who were the most suppressed by God’s Stone of Retaliation, once they stepped into its suppression zone, any magical effect would disappear. However, in the case that the power was used before it was blocked, the result was permanent and irreversible. This is the most common kind of witch. [4]

Summoning can be further sub-divided into two categories: Magic Power and Shaping. [5]

Magic Power [ ]

Magic Power means that the summoning of the ability costs magic power all the time and when the magic power is gone, the summoning of the ability will stop. Example: Anna’s magical fire. [5]

Shaping [ ]

Shaping can exist for a very long time. Example: Soraya’s Coating. [5]

Enchanting [ ]

This kind of magic is displayed by direct contact with its target, the conversion process was also very slow, and the consumption of magic was quite large, and it could always be interrupted by the God’s Stone of Retaliation. However, once the conversion was completed, the added properties became inherent properties, which were effective even within the suppressive area of the God’s Stone of Retaliation. How long the enchantment took effect depended on the amount of magic power used and the objects’ size. [4]

Self-enforcing [ ]

Also known as Extraordinary, is a kind of magic that is constantly consumed by the witch to strengthen herself. Although all witches get their physical fitness improved due to their magic, a self-enforcing type witches are much more powerful in this aspect. They also possess the ability to detect the magic of nearby witches and are unaffected by the power of a God’s Stone of Retaliation. This type is very rare, with only 1 in 1000 witches is a self-enforcing type. [4] [6]

Witch Federation

The Witch Federation, also known as Union was a large organisation established jointly by several witch kingdoms. It possessed many high-ranked witches and witch extraordinaries.

Background [ ]

The Extraordinaries, who survived the First Battle of Divine Will, founded the union. [1] They concentrated their forces in order to win the War of God’s Will and the Federation formed a colossal army while incorporating every Holy City into the fold at the same time. [2]

It was responsible for training and dispatching witches, resolving disputes, and maintaining the stability and public order of the city.

Chronology [ ]

The Witch Federation was founded after the First Battle of Divine Will by the survivors with the vow of the Three Queens which is the founding constitutional amendments of a nation. This event signified the point after which the Union had transformed from an unofficial alliance to a unified political entity. [3]

The Three Chiefs system was built by a witch named Samantha who forced a radical change in the Union. She herself was among the first batch of Three Chiefs.

After the First Battle of Divine Will they were reached out by the Underground Civilization, and began to slowly discover their technology.

The Witch Federation fought against the demons during the Second Battle of Divine Will, and finally lost after the fall of the last holy city Taquila.

The survivors fled to the Barbarian lands, but were split into 2 factions because they conflicted over which strategy they would use to fight against demons. The Alice’s faction proposed to sacrifice some witches to make God’s Punishment Army, consisting of witches in enhanced shells, while the other, led by Natalia, was sure that only the development of magic power may allow to even humanity’s chances against demons.

Furthermore, what the second faction discovered in the maze of the Underground Civilization, was in opposition with the plan of the Queen of Starfall city. If a witch abandons her body to become a God’s Punishment Warrior, she’ll not only lose the chance to be promoted, but also lose God’s Will forever.

After knowing that God’s Punishment Army was not the only way to compete with demons on the battlefields any more, the Taquila survivors who didn’t want to reduce their own kind to the materials for shells caused a great conflict with Alice. [4]

Finally the 2 factions lost their Transcendents, and Eleanor acted to stop this internal conflict and integrated herself into the Central Carrier to discover the other secret of the Underground Civilization.

But even after the merging of Eleanor and other 48 witches, the Central Carrier still hasn’t obtained self-awareness and can’t understand the remaining documented experiment records in the ruins.

The splitting of the 2 factions resulted in the creation of 2 groups: the Church and the Taquila Witches.

Locations [ ]

The Witch Federation occupied vast Fertile Plains, it established 3 Holy Cities, each of which was on God’s Stone mine.

Besides the three Holy Cities, there were also dozens of smaller cities on the Fertile Plains under the Union control. [5]

Culture [ ]

Witches of the Union believed they were chosen by the gods, while common people, unable to condense magic, were both uneducated and powerless, only good for cultivating their soil and menial labor.

Apart from witches, most of the citizens were ordinary people. They were responsible for reproducing and raising children until their magic power was awakened. These young witches would then be handed over to another special department to receive education and training. [6]

Politics [ ]

The Witch Federation was governed by a system of Three seats, known as Queens, each one of them ruling over one of the Holy cities. The last three Queens of the Union before its collapse are as follows:

Common people, mortals, were excluded from governance; to keep information secret, the Union created magic writing which could be read by witches only. [7]

Zero/Chronology

Chronology [ ]

She along with Isabella chased after Garcia and the Wolfsheart King once they fled, using the former’s power to nullify the God’s Stone of Retaliation so that Zero could absorb them both. Absorbing Garcia however caused a profound change in her personality; whereas before she was aloof, afterwards she seemed to become more ambitious.

She was present when Pope O’Brien allowed Mayne to witness the truth of the Church in the viewing room, right before Mayne then ascended to become the new Pope. Zero was then imprisoned on his order so that she could learn to be more obedient and less willful. Upon getting freed by him, she revealed once they were alone in an elevator that O’Brien had set him up to be devoured by her. Although he fought back, disbelieving all of it, he was still beaten like all the others.

After the First Army began setting up in the Northern region, Zero fell into Roland’s trap and committed her forces to attack, suffering heavy losses with the advance wave that had even included God’s Punishment Soldiers. Once Archbishop Soli Daal returned from this conflict, she absorbed him and reviewed his memories to discover just how powerful the weapons of Roland were. This forced her to recall all Pure Witches back, whereupon she led them along with all her forces against the First Army.

Isabella argued with her at this time that they should compromise and that Roland might be God’s true chosen one, but Zero refused as she wanted that glory to belong only to herself. After seeing what Roland had created, she highly desired to absorb him, choosing to believe that he was a gift sent to her from the Gods. She did send letters to Roland, detailing the truth of the Church and the Demons it faced, but this was just a ploy to discover his location: the paper was laced with a powerful scent which would cling to those who touched it, creating a marker for Pure Witch Vanilla to find.

Although in the final clash she was forced to sacrifice many troops, including Pure Witches, she did manage to get close enough to reach Roland with her ability and initiated the Battle of Souls, after Isabella used the Sigil of Infinite they had to amplify her power to nullify the nearby God’s Stone of Retaliation. Unlike all her past times however, what she saw inside his mind confused her greatly. Consequently she did not immediately gloat or explain the rules of her power to him as with all her past opponents, instead choosing to attack quickly and repeatedly, killing him over and over without giving him a chance to think.

Unfortunately he was quick to pick up on the rules himself, which surprised her. Eventually she couldn’t resist answering his questions and boasting about previous fights, largely in order to convince him to willingly give up. He then successfully used his knowledge of science to make small changes to the Illusion world, using less energy to alter it in the process; using Newton’s law of inertia to keep her immobile as he continuously pelted her with gunfire each time she respawned. Completely disbelieving of the situation, she tried to appeal to him by taking the form of Garcia and King Wimbledon III, to no avail (as the true Roland was dead, so no emotional shock could occur). In the end she lost, her screams swallowed up as the world she created vanished.

Zero lost her memories and became one of the creators of the dream world, Roland being the other. In this world, Roland is her Roommate. She seems to be pretty close to Roland and cares about him, as far as abandoning her own family to stay with Roland.

Later, she awakened her power as a martial artist, and was attacked by an Oracle. However she’s saved by her master, Fei Yuhan who gets nearly killed by Oracle but later saved by Roland who defeats the Oracle and through Scroll’s realm of Mind, they bring Nana’s healing equipments to heal Fei, later Zero focuses on learning to use her powers to protect her master.

At the end of the novel, she becomes one the volunteers to transfer her consciousness back to the original world, along with Garcia.
