Фраза «Roger that» (пер. «Вас понял») широко используется для подтверждения во время переговоров по радио. Но откуда она взялась и причем здесь некий Роджер?

Слово «Roger» происходит от фонетического алфавита, который использовался наземным и сухопутным персоналом армии США во время Второй мировой войны при организации двусторонней связи. Дело в том, что радиооператорам требовались предельно ясные способы изложения информации без возможности неправильного истолкования.

К примеру, в НАТО с 1957 года используются фонетические обозначения букв алфавита – Alpha, Bravo, Charlie и т. д. где «R» соответствует слово «Romeo», но до этого вместо него использовалось «Roger».

Использование «R» в качестве подтверждения приема информации появилось еще раньше в эпоху азбуки Морзе, когда получение длинных и сложных сообщений было решено подтверждать несколькими запоминающимися буквами.

Отвечая на сообщение буквой «R», к примеру, можно было просто дать знать отправителю, что его послание получено. С появлением двусторонней голосовой радиосвязи концепция сохранилась, но уже со словом «Roger» вместо одной лишь буквы «R».

Несмотря на то, что «Roger» позже был заменен на «Romeo», широкое использование двусторонней радиосвязи во время Второй мировой войны сделало эту фразу суперпопулярной. Сегодня она звучит несколько иначе – «Roger that», но в переводе на русский это по-прежнему означает «вас понял».

Иногда, во время просмотров фильмов на английском языке, особенно полицейских детективов, можно услышать примерно такой диалог: “All units, return to base, over? — Roger that. Heading home.”

Что за Роджер? О ком или о чем идет речь?

Фраза Roger that используется для того, чтобы подтвердить собеседнику, что его услышали и поняли. Фактически, это то же самое, что “OK”, “Got it”, “I hear you”.

Откуда к нам пришла эта фраза?

История берет начало в 19 веке, когда люди начали применять для телеграфных сообщений азбуку Морзе. Наиболее часто встречающиеся слова для экономии времени заменялись буквой, с которой они начинались. Так слово “Received” — «получил» — заменили буквой “R”.

С появлением двусторонней радиосвязи, которая стала основным способом коммуникации во время Второй мировой войны, использование только одной буквы стало опасным. Появился риск ошибки в понимании информации. Для этого буквы заменили кодовыми словами. Так для “R» — «received» — появилось слово “Roger”.

Постепенно значение слова менялось. Появилось выражение “Roger that”, которое сегодня широко используется не только в профессиональной среде пилотов, военных и полицейских (несмотря на то, что официально “Roger” заменили на “Romeo”), но и в обычной разговорной речи. Особенно между людьми, которые хорошо знают друг друга.

Например: Two by two is four, got it? — Roger that (значение: я понял).

Одно из новых значений этого выражения — когда вы соглашаетесь с собеседником, но не хотите брать на себя лишних обязательств. Например, ваша новая подружка, с которой вы встречаетесь пару недель говорит: «I love you». Лучшим ответом будет: «Roger that».

Интересно, что это выражение может иметь как позитивную, так и негативную окраску. Позитивная: «Would you like to have another piece of cake?» — «Roger that». (С удовольствием, спасибо). Негативная: «Can you wash the floor in your your room?» — «Roger that». (Ну вот, опять, чтоб его…).

I think it means shot at your own will?

Fire at will-Authorized to shoot.
2 o’clock and 6 o’clock can mean time or position. if you are facing a particular direction and the forward direction is 12 o’clock on the face of a clock, then if someone says «you have a bogie on your six,» they mean the enemy is at your 6 o’clock. ie, the enemy is behind you. at your 12 o’clock would be in front of you and so one.

Over and out makes me cringe

My military service friend explained that the term «over and out» is only in movies, and does not make sense in real life. Roger means «over to you» while «out» means I’m done with this call. So basically, you say «out» or «roger» but you can’t combine them and make sense.

Roger means understood not over to you. Over and out means you are done talking and the conversation is done altogether, so it does actually exist. I served from 01′ to 09′ and worked with codes in a bunker across 12 hour shifts for a few of those years. Perhaps the lingo has changed, but that is my experience.

by the way, over and out isn’t actually used together. Over implies you are expecting a response, and out means you have finished the conversation. over and out I think is a residue of Hollywood.

In both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, «Aye, aye» actually means «I understand and I will obey». It is sometimes slurred to sound like a single «aye», but a single «aye» can also be used as a slang version of «yes». Context would clarify the difference.
