Is there a bug or something going on right now that makes all names, no matter how short or long or crazy you make it being flagged as unavailable? Is there something I did that is causing it?
I even tried using the random suggestion button and every single one it suggested was flagged as unavailable.
If it’s unavailable then someone else has the name. Even in the random name, some are taken and the game still keeps it in their filter, Idk why. Game has been around for 10 years, names stick, even from ppl that are completely inactive.
What I recommend is making a first and last name to your character. For example, I like naming my characters Varen, but Varen is taken, so I make last names to them, Varen Marks, Varen Satto, Varen Sanos, and so on. It also looks more professional that way, I like it. And makes your character look more unique with a last name.
I get the many year inactive player name issue. I was have the founder tag and returned after many years.
My thing is I thought something was seriously wrong because I went through 4 different latin words for cold basically.
ice, snow, frost, cold
Glacies, nix, pruinae, frigus
Even Glac’es was taken along with Pruin’a. Wasn’t surprised Friga and Frigga were taken though with the popularity of Norse Myth and Thor comics/movies.
I even tried Glacies Collis which is «Ice Hill» and that was taken somehow lol.
I eventually got in with Nix Von’Collis after rebooting. So it may have been a combo of needing a reboot and names just being taken but I’ve never had an issue before of latin words being taken like that in any game. Guess after all these years it’s not surprising.
5 year break. Made a character and the name I picked was actually available on the first try. I played that character until level 20 or so and deleted it to make something different. Tried using the same name, unavailable.
In like the span of maybe 5 mins of me deleting the first one, creating the second one, it was gone. I added the name to my friends list on all of my characters and I’ve never seen it online. So it’s either stuck in the void, or someone plays the complete opposite hours I do.
Anyway, something I’ve noticed if you try and use a first/last name. If you type out Random Name but hit the space bar after e in name, it will say unavailable. Done it myself a few times.

Are you saying there might be an odd aspect of the name gen code where if it’s a space following an e that it’ll often/always flag as unavailable?
Yeah, the legacy name as last name is stupid.
If we could chose last name for every character we make, the chances of typing first name and last name that has already been taken would drop dramatically.

It’s a big world, a lot of ppl play this game, either through Steam or continue through the original SWTOR Launch. Many people actually think of the same stuff. You’re probably not the only one who’s come up with Glacies Collis, believe it or not, or any other names you can come up with that you’d think are unique. I’ve come up with some incredibly wacky names that I was so sure no one else would have, but sure enough. they were taken, lol.
That is why I mentioned when creating a character, to use a first and last name. It makes the character way more unique to where other people couldn’t have created the name. Example, like I mentioned, I like naming my characters Varen, but that’s taken, so I’ve named my Bounty Hunter Varen Marks, and of course that works, even when someone else in the SWTOR game has the name Varen. Even if someone had the name Marks Varen, my chosen name would still work. Everyone who really loves the name they’ve come up with to their character and are angry that it can’t be chosen, create a good last name that goes with the name you’ve chosen smoothly, I almost guarantee you that it’ll work then, and you’ll have a character with a name that you might even think looks more professional that way, lol.
Invalid Name
So apparently if you include «Van» in your name (spaces between) it automatically «invalid name» no matter what you type before or after. This sucks, and let me guess, «Van» is blacklisted because of Van Halen huh?
Seriously SWTOR needs a complete rework on the naming character stuff.
That everyone could have a name they truly want. 2 spaces maximum instead of just 1 would also be better.
for example; Zaria Van Koranus
I’d have to dig for where it was discussed but I believe 2 spaces aren’t allowed. ie First Van Second
A quick search and I can’t find this discussed. There’s too many threads asking for spaces in the first place. Pity that they were never combined.
Don;t expect a reply though.

There are some wierd name restrictions, I have tried and found a few of my recently tried names unavailable.
There are those that have managed to do some names with the current naming system and then the legacy name, like «Big Bad Brutus» (I do not know if that is allowed but it is a only example.)
I also agree with you that two spaces could be cool but for now we have to be happy with one space in the name.

Under the Rules of conduct http://www.swtor.com/legalnotices/rulesofconduct naming policy section
Naming Policy
When creating a character or guild name for Star Wars: The Old Republic, it is encouraged that you select a name that reflects the theme of the game. The guidelines listed below outline the types of names that you can NOT use, and apply to both player or character names, as well as guild names.
You may not use any names that violate the General Rules. This includes the use of names that are hateful, defamatory, racist, ethnically offensive, obscene, vulgar, sexually explicit, or any other language that is offensive in nature.
You may not use names that are harassing or defamatory to other players or employees of EA, BioWare or LucasArts, e.g. EASUX, Timsretarded, and Biowaresux.
You may not use names of any EA, BioWare, or LucasArts employee or service related to Star Wars: The Old Republic.
You may not use names of copyrighted or trademarked characters, materials or products, e.g. Coca-Cola or Dr. Pepper.
You may not use names from popular culture or media, e.g. Lady Gaga or George Lucas.
You may not use names that are religiously or historically significant, e.g. Jesus, Winston Churchill.
You may not use proper names of areas within Star Wars for character names. Guild names, however, MAY use the proper names of specific areas to help promote role-playing and realm pride, e.g. Defenders of Tython or Protectors of Hutta.
You may not use proper names of non-player characters within Star Wars: The Old Republic, e.g. Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, Yoda, Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker.
You may not use names containing titles or ranks within them, e.g. General Supertrooper, Captain Tim, Darth Timmy, Knight Wakey.
You may not use names that refer to drugs or that are drug related.
You may not use names that contain an inappropriate phrase, sentence or any fragment of a sentence or Leet speak, e.g. uberhaxer, xxspeederxx, lolface, rofl, Noobwhacker, TimmyF**k, kock, fuk.
You may not use misspellings or alternative spellings of names that violate any of the above rules, e.g. Hamsolo, Yooda, DorthVader.
The highlighted in bold is the only part i can think of that might be the reason for the name being invalid
Can’t create character
I’ve been trying for a week now to create a new character. I spend a fair amount of time building the character I want, then I click on «random» for name, and I always get message saying that the name is not valid, pick another. I went through over 50 «random» names generated by the game and all came up with the same response.
This is starting to piss me off because of the 2 characters I do have, I can’t play them anymore. They aren’t strong enough to tackle the enemies that are presented. Speaking of which, why in the world would the game create an enemy that is 30x as powerful as any character I’ve been able to play? Both of my level 50 characters have values in the 10k-15k range. All of a sudden, all of my enemies are 80,000+ and one is even 480,000. How am I supposed to combat that kind of power? I’ve been trying to win ANY battle for almost a month now and all I get to do is spend more money on medpacs and stims. I’ve spent almost 400,000 credits and I have absolutely nothing to show for it.
I’m becoming severely disillusioned with this game.
Stop doing Flashpoints solo!
Seriously. You make it sound like it. There are no challenging encounters, apart from champion mobs, to do on your own at level 50.
The character creating issue is very strange, I had the same a bit ago when I randomed names but if I used the name of one of my other characters but with a slight change it caused no problems. I hope they’ll manage to fix it for you.
Don’t give up on your 50s, the game gets fun there! Not being able to create a character is a weird bug though. bioware
get geared and man up, if all else fails, ask for help in /general
edit: almost forgot, yeah, the names thing is annoying, but what do you expect?
its suggesting names from a database, dont you think there’s a large chance that most of them have already been taken?
