Nowadays, almost every home has access to the Internet. We use the Internet for various purposes: gaining necessary information, taking part in communities, and even making money.

In my opinion, modern life can hardly be imagined without the world-wide web. The Internet can be helpful to everybody, including students. Firstly, students can use the Internet for learning purposes. I suppose that it is the strongest reason why they should get access to the Internet. Thousands websites place a mass of good information at the disposal of any person interested in mathematics, chemistry, foreign languages, etc. Many school teachers create special resources for their students. Secondly, the Internet offers a wide range of leisure opportunities. You can get in touch with your friends and send them e-mail messages, picture-cards, photos. You can make new friends from the whole world. The Internet offers a wonderful solution to the problem of loneliness.

Notwithstanding the advantages, the Internet implies serious risks. I think that dating websites pose a real risk to the teenagers. On the one hand, dating websites give you a chance to find a friend who you have much in common with. On the other hand, your new friend may turn out not to be a person you’d like to communicate with. What is more, it is quite possible that your new friend is a criminal. Such contacts may be very dangerous to you. Another grave disadvantage of the Internet is the presence of much information that can hurt your psyche and even body. I mean pornography, publication of possible ways of suicide or buying and taking drugs.

In my opinion, the quality of information must be one of the top national priorities. It is necessary to pass laws to prevent harmful information from spreading. Much needs to be done to enforce the laws. Internet providers should have a concern in the quality of information being transmitted through their channels.

To sum it up, modern people are in great need of the Internet. But strong measures must be taken to protect them from bad information. If such measures are taken, the Internet will be safe.

There are people who believe that the Internet is harmful and useless. Others are convinced that the Internet is a reach source of knowledge which might be useful for us.

I have all reasons to believe that the Internet is one of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth century. First of all, it has become possible to find friends all over the world. All you need is a computer or a gadget and the Internet. Moreover, Internet users have an access to the enormous amount of information such as films, music and books. That is to say, instead of buying information in stores, people can get it for free in the Internet. Also it has become even possible to speak with astronauts using the Internet when they are far away from Earth.

Other people are convinced that the Internet is harmful, especially for children. They say that many people get addicted to it. They also believe that there is a lot of useless information.

I cannot agree with the above opinions as these people fail to understand that the internet gives big opportunities. Obviously, you should use it wisely and not spend all day long there. But there is no doubt that the Internet itself is a great discovery, which has changed our lives.

There are two different points of view on the problem. I believe that the Internet is useful for people as long as you use it properly.

Just a century ago we didn’t even know about computers and the Internet. But today we take them for granted and can’t imagine our life without these inventions. I think that the Internet (or WorldWideWeb) is the greatest invention ever and it has made a significant impact on our lives.

Nowadays the Internet is affordable almost for anyone and it connects people all around the world. You can stay in touch with your friends, relatives and colleagues. Our modern life will stop without the net because it helps to make on-line business transactions, manage our bank accounts, pay our gas or electricity bills and send important e-mails, for example.

The Internet is the largest source of information. There are millions of Internet sites storing plenty of useful data about everything: science, history, psychology, sports, fashion, music, cooking and many other subjects. We can also download our favourite movies or songs, listen to radio channels or play games. Learning or practising foreign languages is possible with the Internet too.

The Internet saves our time and money. We can do on-line shopping choosing the desirable thing at the best price. And then we just click “Order the delivery”. By the way, we can also sell various things in the net. We often don’t need to go to the library: surfing the net can easily help us to find and open the book we need. Buying stamps and envelopes isn’t required if you’re going to send an e-mail. It takes just a few seconds to send an instant message by e-mail.

The Internet helps shy people or those with low-esteem to find each other on dating sites. On-line chatting through social networking websites is more comfortable for Internet users with the lack of social skills.

I am sure that the Internet has changed our life for the better. There is only one disadvantage about it: some people become rather addicted to it and spend all days long surfing the net, on-line dating or playing games. Over-using the net can be dangerous because new technology victims start neglecting their families, friends, work and real hobbies.

For centuries people had been living without any great inventions. We can compare the everyday people’s life of the 11th and the 13th centuries and we’ll see it was very similar. But can we say the same about the 19th and the 21st centuries? Certainly, not. Nowadays science and technology are developing so fast that sometimes you can’t «chase» the progress.

In the 30’s the radio was one of the most popular means of spending your leisure time. Then television was invented and the radio became less popular. Today TV has changed a lot since its invention and it’s still popular but it has a serious competitor. It is the Internet. I can’t say exactly what is more popular today – television or the Net. But in my opinion, TV will vanish in 10—20 years and the Internet or even something more modern will become the main source of information and entertainment.

The internet or TV?

Both the Internet and television are the forms of Mass Media that’s why they have some similar features. First of all, they keep people informed. It means that we can get to know about the latest world news due to them, find educational information, articles connected with your hobbies and the like. Secondly, both television and the Net gather big audiences so people can find new topics to discuss. Moreover, it gives a wonderful opportunity to communicate with other people. Certainly, it’s not a direct communication and the Internet and TV can’t change real friends but they just give extra-chances to active people.

TV and the Net are similar in the way they give us information. TV-sets and computers have colorful screens and special sound appliances. Here I’d like to say that one of their disadvantages is a bad influence on health because users are glued to these screens. So we can say the way of giving us information isn’t very convenient and healthy.

However TV and the Web differ very much. The main advantage of the Internet which I appreciate very much is that you don’t depend on somebody or something. There’s no schedule! You just start up your computer and begin surfing the Internet looking for whatever you want. I consider that if you want to know the latest news it’s better to log on the Net. There you’ll choose the topic and read or watch not one but lots of articles on it. Isn’t it comfortable? And you’re not told about crimes, crashes, violence every time (compare with TV news!).

On the Internet you can find not only small news items but big articles on different subjects and even books. To my mind, articles are very useful: they play a big educational role. What about virtual books? Well, I’d rather read paper books. For me reading good books associates with pleasant moments, such as sitting in the armchair, drinking tea and dreaming. Can reading from the screen be so nice? I think, no. Besides, it causes heavy eyestrain and backache.

Nowadays people search for different sorts of music, videos, films in the Web. So do I.

I prefer the Internet to TV because I can find there my favorite music whenever I want. Fortunately, the Internet in our country is quite good, the speed is fast and it’s possible to watch, for instance, a long film there.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Internet.

As anything, the Web has two sides: bad and good. We’ve already talked about a good side. What about its disadvantages? The main problem connected with the Internet is net obsession. It can be compared with TV addiction but I think Internet addiction is more widespread and more destructive. Either adults or children can’t live without the Web. They lose interest in their hobbies, spend their free time in front of the screen. Then they forget about their friends. People destroy their health (some cases were very hazardous: problems were much more serious than bad eyesight). When these people get fired they lose the link between the real and the virtual world. Unfortunately, some people become insane.

Nowadays the Internet addiction is one of the most principal problems. And it’s hard to solve it because the life without Internet is really impossible today.

There are other disadvantages of the Net: a big hourly or monthly fee, diverse computer viruses and harmful programs, which can rob you.

I am a frequent Internet user but I’m not addicted to it. I log on the Web about two times a week. First of all I check my e-mail (I have some pen pals), then I go to my favorite sites (various forums, music sites, sites with diaries). From time to time, I search for articles on school topics. And, finally, sometimes I read news and download music.

Taking everything in account, I’d like to say that every invention usually has its lovers and enemies. We can blame the Web a lot, discuss it every time, but still log on to read the weather forecast or to send a letter to Australia by e-mail. And no one can deny the great role of it. So, if people control themselves everything will be OK.

Но можем ли мы сказать то же самое про 19 и 21-й века? Конечно, нет! Сегодня наука и технология развиваются настолько быстро, что иногда мы не поспеваем за прогрессом.

В 30-х годах радио было одним из наиболее популярных способов скоротать свободное время. Затем было изобретено телевидение и радио стало менее популярно. Сегодня телевидение сильно изменился с момента его изобретения, но оно до сих пор популярно. Недавно у телевидения появился серьезный конкурент – Интернет. Я не могу точно сказать, что более популярно сегодня – телевидение или Интернет. Но, на мой взгляд, телевидение исчезнет через 10-20 лет, а Интернет или еще что-то еще более современное станет главным источником информации и развлечения.

Интернет или телевидение?

Интернет и телевидение – это средства массовой информации, поэтому они имеют некоторые схожие черты. Прежде всего, они держат людей в курсе событий. Это означает, что с их помощью мы можем узнать о последних мировых новостях, найти образовательную информацию, статьи, связанные с нашими хобби и тому подобное. Во-вторых, и телевизор, и интернет собирают большую аудиторию, дают людям новые темы для обсуждения. Это дает замечательную возможность познакомиться с другими людьми. Конечно, это не прямая связь и Интернет и телевидение не могут заменить настоящих друзей, но они дают дополнительные возможности для активных людей.

Телевизор и интернет похожи способом подачи информацию. Телевизоры и компьютеры имеют цветные экраны и специальные звуковые приборы. Здесь я хотел бы сказать, что одним из их недостатков является пагубное влияние на здоровье, поскольку пользователи много времени проводят, уставившись в эти экраны. Поэтому мы можем сказать, что способ передачи информации неблаготворно влияет на здоровье.

Однако ТВ и в Интернете отличаются очень сильно. Главное преимущество Интернета, которое я очень ценю, в том, что пользователь не зависим от кого-то или чего-то. Здесь нет никакого расписания! Вы просто включаете свой компьютер и начинаете искать в Интернете все, что пожелаете. Я считаю, что если вы хотите узнать последние новости – лучше поискать в сети. Там можно выбрать тему и почитать или посмотреть не одну, а много статей. Разве это не удобно? И там не рассказывают против вашей воли о преступлениях, авариях и насилии (сравните с каналами новостей!).

В интернете вы можете найти не только краткие обзоры, но большие статьи на разные темы и даже книги. На мой взгляд, статьи очень полезны: они играют большую воспитательную роль. Как насчет виртуальных книг? Ну, лично я предпочитаю читать бумажные книги. Для меня чтение хороших книг ассоциируется с приятными моментами, такими как посиделки в кресле с чайком и мечтами. Может ли чтение с экрана быть таким же приятным? Я думаю, нет. Кроме того, сидение за компьютером вызывает зрительное напряжение и боли в спине.

Сейчас люди ищут различные виды музыки, видео, фильмы в Интернете. И я тоже. Я предпочитаю Интернет телевидению, потому что я могу найти там мою любимую музыку, когда захочу. К счастью, Интернет в нашей стране – вполне сносный, скорость быстрая и позволяет посмотреть, например, длинный фильм.

Преимущества и недостатки Интернета.

Как и у всего, у интернета есть две стороны: плохая и хорошая. Мы уже говорили о хорошей стороне. А что насчет недостатков? Основная проблема, связанная с Интернетом – это интернет-зависимость. Её можно сравнить с ТВ-зависимостью, но я думаю, что Интернет-зависимость – более распространенная и более разрушительна. Ни взрослые, ни дети не могу жить без интернета. Они теряют интерес к своим хобби и все свободное время проводят перед экраном. Потом они забывают про своих друзей. Люди также разрушают свое здоровье (некоторые случаи были весьма опасными: проблемы были гораздо серьезнее, чем плохое зрение). Когда таких людей увольняют, они теряют связь между реальным и виртуальным миром. К сожалению, некоторые даже сходят с ума.

В настоящее время Интернет-зависимость является одной из самых главных проблем. И она трудноразрешима, потому что жизнь без Интернета сегодня действительно невозможна.

Есть и другие недостатки интернета: большой почасовая или ежемесячная плата, разнообразные компьютерные вирусы и вредоносные программы, которые могут вас ограбить.

Я являюсь частым пользователем Интернета, но я не пристрастился к нему. Я захожу в Интернет примерно два раза в неделю. В первую очередь, я проверяю свою почту (у меня есть несколько друзей по переписке), затем я захожу на свои любимые сайты (различные форумы, музыкальные сайты, сайты с дневниками). Время от времени, я ищу статьи на школьные темы. И, наконец, иногда я читаю новости и качаю музыку.

Принимая все в расчет, я бы хотел сказать, что каждое нововведение обычно имеет своих поклонников и противников. Мы можем винить интернет за многое, обсуждая его недостатки каждый раз, но все же мы пользуемся им, когда хотим прочитать прогноз погоды или послать письмо в Австралию по электронной почте. И никто не может отрицать огромную роль интернета. Так что, если человек будет себя контролировать, то все будет хорошо.
