I get this same error message even when I am converting a single file. I thought the new version 3.0.11.1 would fix this.

Edit: Command-L fixed this.

The overwrite message is printed if the output file already exists, as pretty much every other app does.

In fact, this very forum is not short on people complaining that VLC overwrote files because the dialog was not scary enough to deter them: so sorry but the dialog is not going away.

Most applications ask if a file that will be generated already exists; and it does so before beginning to generate that file. The behavior I am experiencing is as follows:

1) No output file exists.
2) I start to convert a file, specifying the output file (which does not exist).
3) When the conversion completes, I am presented a message asking if I want to replace or keep the existing file.
4) Irrespective of how I answer that question, the entire process begins again, at the end of which GOTO 3.

This is an infinite loop and, as reported above, the only way to terminate it is to kill the process. I experience this irrespective of the type of conversion I am doing (although I have not tried every possible input and out type).

Adobe after Effects.

Audio Output».

Now every time I go to render, I get that same Output Module error message.

You try to override the file that is used in your project.

[Julie Mullins] “The Output Module will overwrite the file selected in the project panel. Would you like to continue? I have no idea what this means.”

It means you’re rendering the same file name to the same folder that you’ve previously rendered and, thus, replacing your previously rendered file. That’s sometimes ok to do … as long as it’s intentional and you’re aware of exactly what you’re doing … for example, if the render fails, the previously rendered file will no longer be any good since it was in the process of being overwritten.

To avoid that message and situation, you can render to a different file name (i.e., appending each with “v01”, “v02”, etc.) or render the same file name to a different location … I’d suggest the first approach. By the way, you should always “render” your work using the render queue, rather than using export movie.

I need to add one thing …

“the file selected in the project panel.” that part means you are not only writing over a previously rendered file, but one that has been imported back into your AE project … it’s rarely a good idea to render over a pre-rendered file that is used in the same project … especially if you’re not familiar with the detail of how it all works.

Is there any way to disable this warning? Because I am well aware of the result of writing to a file currently used in a project, it’s intentional.

Output not overwritten despite «overwriteOutput = True»

As I understand it, overwriteOutput is an environment setting that controls whether an output overwrites an existing file of a duplicate name. Just re-checked the help pages, which confirms.

Given that there are 2 places that I know of to set this env setting, which takes precedent, and how do I make my script overwrite duplicate files?

I looked at arcpy.env.overwriteOutput = True appears not to be working?, but the problem there seemed to be with an associated function, and not the ‘overwriteOutput’ setting.

1 Answer 1

You said this is a standalone script, so it is possible that there is already a lock on the feature class you are trying to overwrite if you have it open in an MXD already. From the ArcMap resource on File Geodatabases and Locking regarding editing or modifying a dataset::

However, if another process is already accessing the data, whether it be a process on your computer or another user’s, ArcGIS prevents you from performing any of these operations until the other process has terminated.

Make sure that any other processes that might be accessing the dataset are terminated. Try the following:

close any MXDs that are accessing the feature class

reboot your python editor

sometimes even rebooting your machine and ArcMap/ArcCatalog fully can do wonders for removing pesky lingering lock files that won’t disappear.

Batch Render Warning Dialog

The Batch Render Warning dialog informs you of certain conditions you might have overlooked while assigning the rendering tasks.

The dialog that displays is context-sensitive, meaning that the warning will indicate when either of these two conditions exist:

Task Queue

Both formats of the Batch Render Warning dialog include the Task Queue columns that are shown in the in the Batch Render dialog. The key difference is the exception of the checkboxes that let you specify which cameras are use in the render. This Task Queue only shows the cameras that may overwrite a saved file, or do not have a path/file name set for output, or if they show an output path that is invalid.

Missing Output Path/Filename or File Overwrite

This version of the Batch Render Warning dialog appears if you click the Render button on the Batch Render dialog and one or more of the tasks to be rendered does not include an output path/file name. The dialog also appears if there is a chance you will overwrite a previously rendered image.

The selected output module will overwrite a file that already exists. The selected output module will overwrite a file that already exists. The selected output module will overwrite a file that already exists

Allows you to continue with the batch rendering tasks even though there are some tasks without an output path/file name or some files could be overwritten. Tasks without an output path/file name are not automatically saved and appear only in the Rendered Frame Window.

Cancels the batch rendering.

Invalid Output Path

This version of the Batch Render Warning dialog only appears if you are rendering to a file that has invalid output paths. For example, if you’re rendering a client’s model and they’ve set their own output paths.

Allows you to browse to a new directory and reassign the output path for all the entries in the Task Queue. The specified output file name remains the same.

Allows you to continue with the batch rendering tasks even though there are some tasks without an output path. Tasks without an output path are not automatically saved and appear only in the Rendered Frame Window.
