The user name or password that you entered is not valid try typing it again

Question

I migrated my Exchange 2003 Server to a new Exchange 2007 SP1 server on a new server running Server 2008 X64. I have succesfully removed the Exchange 2003 Server & demoted the 2003 Server.

When I try to log on to OWA, I get the FBA logon screen, but any user I use the credentials for, it just says «The user name or password that you entered is not valid. Try entering it again.» I have cookies turned on on the client, and FBA and SSL (just using the default SSL certififcate that gets installed with OWA, I will install a real one as soon as I migrate it permanently to a new server). I am using my login/password, but I have also tried the Admin user/pass. I am testing this internally, but I am using the external URL to test it with.

Years ago, when I setup the domain originally, I set it up using .net, because that is what Microsoft recommended at the time.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

You dont need to create virt directories. They will come on its own. why dont you build the whole CAS server from the scratch. Follow this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202. This will tell you how to handle the IIS and CAS over here.

if this is on server 2008 then check if these are roles are installed with IIS

Application Development->ISAPI Extensions
Security->Basic Authentication
Security->Windows Authentication

I looked at that one before I posted. Mine no longer has an exchange virtual directory, and it does not have anything to do with forwarding to the OWA virtual directory.

Has the user signed out from all other locations?

I have seen this message before and the user was signed in on another device.

Is the user including domain in front of username? On RD gateway server or on AD server, in security log, can you see login failure for this user, when trying to login?

Weirdly enough it has now started working again. I’ll have a look through the logs and see if anything stands out.

Like flgator346 said, this sounds like DNS. Whenever something doesn’t work one moment and then suddenly does, it could be because you have DNS servers listed in your DHCP scope / Static NIC config that are not domain aware. Usually this happens when a well meaning sysadmin puts Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) DNS as secondary or tertiary in the list of DNS servers following the IP of one of their domain controllers. Make sure only domain controllers are listed as DNS servers for domain joined resources.
