“ Travel is the only thing you buy that can make you richer ”
When I was younger I desperately wanted to live in another country. To my family and friends this notion seemed a bit peculiar.
Most people start to think about moving in their early 20s…I was thinking about it when I was 10 years old.
My experiences changed me and made me the person I am today. Because travel is the only thing that will make you richer.
1. You will become more independent
2. You will become stronger (mentally)
When I travel alone I feel like nothing is going to break me. I am invincible. I have witnessed many peculiar situations. I even saved somebody’s life. When you travel, you will not escape many endurances that life will offer. However, the reward will be greater.
3. You will become more open minded
Different cultures, languages and new ways of doing things will teach you to have an open mind. It will teach you acceptance and respect. It will teach you to listen more and not to render judgements too easily.
4. You will have friends all over the world
That was a big dream of mine when I was growing up- to have friends all over the world. You have no idea how kind people can be, how often people will be willing to help you. I am saddened by todays’ news stories, we only share bad news. There are many great and wonderful acts of kindness (often enormous kindness) that should have been told. Anyway, if you travel you will make friends all over the world.
5. You will become more knowledgable
6. You will become a better human being
You will become a better human being in every sense of the word. Trust me.
Thank you for reading and hitting the 💙 if you enjoyed this article. This will motivate me to keep on writing and sharing my experiences with you.
10 Reasons Traveling Is The Only Thing You Buy That Makes You Richer
You might not own the most expensive car in the world, nor the biggest house on earth. But one thing is for sure your dreams are bigger than those things. “Traveling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. “ Yes and yes! I agree. I know you have read this line for so many times now on so many blog posts, on your Facebook news feed, on your RSS. Well, let me try to explain it further by giving some 10 good reasons why that such line exists.
1. You cannot buy memories. During your first plane ride, I know you can still remember how your heart pounds when the plane is about to take-off. A simple memory like this is something you can’t buy, the feeling, the sweaty palms, the nausea you’ve felt, the wonderful “I-feel-like-flying” you experience; all of these cannot buy with money.
2. You grow as a person. When you are totally pissed and tired from work, the first thing you have in mind is to take some time-off, not for the sake of the company that you are working with, but for yourself. You go on a vacation and unplug yourself from the real world; while having a beer on your right hand and a book on your left while watching the ocean glistening right before your eyes, your mind do all those realizations about life, about work, about everything in life. And when you get back, you become a different person, and most of all you grow as an existing human being.
3. It restores your belief in humanity. When you travel alone, there comes to a point that you really cannot get on how to read your map or in-short you are LOST. Yes, when you break the good news to your family that you have decided to take that trip of a lifetime, the usual thing that you will hear from them is “Traveling… Alone? Are you out of your mind? Isn’t that scary?”. Everyone is scared and you are excited, how peculiar feeling is that? But you still go on and do it. Then, on your journey you will meet people who will help you get the next cab, who will tell you how to go the substation, who will try to help you without any motives to harm you. You will learn how to trust bit by bit.
4. It challenges you. The only thing on how you conquer your fear is to face them. No one will push you to your own limits except yourself. It allows you to dive into a whole new perspective in life after you have conquered your fear. You will never know your boundaries until you have reached it, but it doesn’t stop there. Life has no boundaries. So keep on pushing yourself to the limit!
5. It gives you a taste of the world. Different sides of the world, different continents, and different people. It allows you to embrace how the locals live, how they live it to the fullest! Can you just imagine how your favorite pasta was made? How its made to perfection? How your favorite rice noodles was made? When you go in depth on what’s behind all of these, it lets you embrace the beauty of life, the beauty of the world! You understand how they do it, and why they do it. You become part of them, you see things through their eyes!
6. You gain self-confidence. If you are struggling with your self-confidence, I advise you to travel alone. Aside from facing your fears, you allow yourself to be yourself, to talk to a complete stranger, to give yourself a boost of self-confidence. It might scare you at first, but believe me, it works! You will come back home braver and much more different in a good way than you were before.
7. You see a whole new horizon. Everything becomes a routine that we all try to break. When you travel, your perspective becomes broader, you embrace the new horizons of life. It gives you an idea how lucky you are in this world, from the people you meet and from the things you see. The best advice you can get is from a stranger; it strikes you like a lightning and one day you wake up and have decided to change the old you into a version 2.0.
8. You learn to trust yourself. Becoming true to yourself is one of the spice in the pillars of success. You cannot buy trust, you gain it. And by traveling, trusting yourself is one of the hardest battle you will ever encounter. You will meet people who won’t be as good as you have thought, who will frustrate you, who will break you. But the bits and pieces of those that you have experienced will let you learn how to trust yourself. That in the end, you will realize that you can only “love many and trust a few”.
9. It gives you happiness. Years back, only rich people can afford to travel. They have these private jets and having a toast first class up in the sky, we can’t blame rich people if those luxurious things makes them happy. But now in our 20-something-century-modern-day anyone can afford to travel! Flying in economy class can also make someone happy! Traveling gives you sense of fulfillment, a carefree liberty, and a sense of happiness. If traveling is something you are passionate about and you know will give you happiness, then go ahead and do it! Explore the world, fill your eyes with places and faces, hope and happiness!
10. It is an investment. Imagine traveling as an investment. It teaches you more about life than the 4 corners of your cubicle in your 9 to 5 job. An Investment that cannot be snatched by anyone from you, it’s like education. You can put all of your experiences on you Resume and it’s an added plus! (Joke, half meant). But on a serious note, it’s an investment that you can share to anybody! When you’re old and cannot travel anymore, it is the stories that you will tell to your grandchildren! It’s like investing memories in your head, because in the future someone will benefit from it; it can be yourself too!

Travel is NOT the Only Thing You Buy That Makes You Richer
A lovely little picture popped up on my Instagram feed the other day. ‘Travel is the Only Thing you Buy that Makes you Richer’ – Said Internet
Then beneath a rabbit reading with his feet dangling off the edge of a cliff next to his tent it said ‘LOL, there are also books’ – Said Zayts
It got me thinking… There are loads of things we can and do buy that make us richer.
Not only is the idea that travel is the only thing that we can buy to make our lives richer a privileged and elitist sentiment, it’s also just kind of wrong.
I do understand the sentiment. I get the thought behind it. But it’s pretty short sighted and ironically consumerist. It’s the product of a consumption mindset. The consumption mindset of someone who has enough basic levels of wealth to be able to make that call.
Retail Therapy
I used to think retail therapy was a load of nonsense. The idea that when you’re going through or have been through something hard you go shopping to make it all better. I still think this is a load of nonsense if you’re seeking long term satisfaction… BUT I do think there are things we can buy that make us richer.
I believe that retail therapy has a place when we buy stuff that carries meaning. And I believe that there are other things we can buy that make us richer…
Like buying a gift for someone. No strings attached.
There are studies that show when we give to others we feel better in ourselves. When we know we are bringing joy, love or support to another person it sparks a reaction in the middle region of the brain (the pleasure bit).
Dunn, Aknin, and Norton carried out research into this and found a strong link between giving and happiness. Clearly this can become a slightly murky topic when we move to a line of thought that says ‘give in order to be happy’, but we won’t go there.
Gifts and donations are both things you can buy that make YOU richer. Not only that, they make others richer and the world at large once the seed of giving is planted.
Like buying stuff to make stuff.
Another thing we can buy that makes us richer is stuff to make stuff. My life becomes richer when I buy a notebook, guitar strings, a new piece of musical equipment to play with. Why? Because these are tools and resources that enable creativity.
Creativity is something that when it’s shared can make us richer as society.
The value of society can usually be seen in the quality of its culture. What are we building, making, creating? How do we see the world and how do we bring an intrinsic sense of value to the collective life of society? To build we need materials. Materials usually need to be bought.
I mentioned the difference between pleasure and enjoyment in a recent post about Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of Flow. This is an important distinguishing feature when we consider retail therapy. In the context of this ‘richness’ concept we might say that enjoyment = richness.
Like buying ingredients for food.
A few months ago I started baking our own bread. I identified shop-bought bread (and its MANY ingredients) as one of the biggest contributors to my inability to lose weight. So I went out and bought some flour, yeast, and salt. I’ve never looked back. It’s the most intrinsically enjoyable process.
It brings a great deal of inner delight to eat bread that has been made by my own hand and to know that it consists of nothing but basic ingredients. It brings richness both to my own body, and also to my spirit – the results improve with every loaf I make.
This can be experienced whenever we cook from scratch. The process of creating a meal and then eating what you’ve made brings a deep sense of richness and satisfaction. There is also a richness drawn from the progress and improvement experienced over time as you develop your skills.
Like buying the work of our makers.
Zayts mentioned books. I would add music, films, entry to performances, galleries and museums. The list goes on. When we spend money on the products of our culture’s makers we are enriching our own lives and culture more broadly. We are contributing to the potential for more making to happen. Everyone wins.
When you buy an album, go to a show, see a film etc you are enriching your experience of the world. You are also contributing to the potential future production of more. You can feel satisfied that the richness is not just experienced for you as an individual but it stretches further and deeper into society more generally.
Collective Choice
It’s not simply about your own individual experience as a result of the money you’ve spent. We are in it together. Every consumer choice we make has profoundly far reaching consequences that stretch way beyond that which we can see.
Our choices may seem like individual choices but they are actually a part of a huge and intricate ecosystem. Some choices destroy value (buying and demanding a more disposable society – like fast food, and fast fashion in clothing, trends, and technology – stuff that requires poorer and poorer labour conditions and massive areas of landfill to dispose of yesterday’s fads).
We need to feel the impact of our choices. To know that we can make good choices and that we don’t have to succumb to the pressures of a growth driven economy that desires and perpetuates a valueless society. We can choose to invest our money in things that matter.
We can transcend this idea that we spend to be happy, and choose instead to use our money as an investment into real inner growth of us as individuals and as a collective.
With that in mind I believe there are a great many things we can buy that will make us rich.
Over to You
Travel is not the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. What do YOU buy that makes you richer? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below.
