“What am I doing with my life?” As a life coach and business consultant, I hear this question – or some version of it – all the time. Those asking the question are likely facing one of a couple scenarios.
One, you wake up one morning and find yourself in a job you hate, a relationship you don’t want to be in, or a life that has little resemblance to the one you had imagined. You might be feeling low, filled with frustration, shame, or regret. This is not where you wanted to be at this time in your life…it’s not the life you wanted to live.
Or maybe you don’t feel unhappy or lost, but you wake up and realize you want something more, new, or different. You may have accomplished many of the things you’d imagined for your life, and now you’re trying to figure out what to do next.
My job as a coach and consultant is to support my clients to be happier, more successful and fulfilled. To help them get from where they are to where they want to be, uncovering obstacles along the way. This usually involves working through a process and asking powerful questions so they can discover the answers to their biggest questions – including this one.
What’s Wrong With Your Life?
One of the very first things I share with my clients is this: you don’t have to figure out what you want to do with the entire rest of your life!
You don’t have to work out what you want to be when you “grow up” or discover your entire life’s purpose. You don’t have to commit to a career for the next 20 years. I see so many people paralyzed by thinking they must work everything out for the entire rest of their lives. Of course, they feel stressed and overwhelmed!
Instead, focus on identifying what’s next. At this age, in this stage, facing your current circumstances and ideas of personal development. I’m not saying this won’t be attached to a bigger vision, but that doesn’t mean you have to have the whole plan right now. I love MLK’s quote:
“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, you just have to take the first step.”
The same is true for figuring out what you’re doing with your life.
How to Answer the Question – What Am I Doing with My Life?
Back to the question. Let’s look at a couple of my recent clients.
Sabine* was a smart, successful, vibrant woman. She already had several successful jobs during her career, traveled the world, had a family, and was settling back in a new city. While she originally called wanting to take her business to the next level, we soon realized that wasn’t what she really needed or wanted.
She was trying to figure out what she was doing with her life. For her, this meant realizing she had lost her sense of self. While no one would know from the outside, she was feeling overwhelmed, lost, and unsure of herself. She was doing all the “right” things for everyone around her, but she wasn’t doing all the right things for her.
Together, we were able to help Sabine:
Then, there’s Max*. Incredibly smart, fun and motivated, Max had successfully climbed up through his career ladder and was happily married with his first child. Life was good.
He came to me because he was in the second scenario; Max was trying to figure out what he wanted to do next. Even though he had a great job, he was looking for more – something new, different, challenging and interesting.
In our time together, Max was able to:
Here’s the process and the questions I walked through with Sabine and Max. Following these will help you make progress towards identifying what you’re doing with your life too:
Step 1: What Do You Want?
Whenever you’re asking “What am I doing with my life?”, it’s important to take a step back, look at the big picture, and identify what you want. Frankly, if you don’t know what you want, how do you expect to get it?
Sabine originally thought she wanted to “take her business to the next level,” but when she dug deeper, she realized there was so much more. She ultimately found that she wanted to feel like herself again; to feel secure, trust and assert herself, and regain her sense of self.
Max wanted to love what he was doing. He wanted to be in a career (or role) that he was energized and “jazzed” about.
Your Turn:
What do you want? Get specific.
Is it a new career in which you feel excited and energized? A relationship where you feel honored and loved? To be confident and happy with yourself? To live in a particular place or to explore the world?
Maybe, like Sabine, when you think you have your answer, ask yourself, “what else?” and see what comes up.
Once you are clear on what you want, you can move to the next question.
Step 2: Who Are You?
Self-awareness and a little soul searching is critical for success – especially when you’re trying to figure out what you’re doing with your life.
Understanding yourself at a deeper level and making decisions based upon those insights will ensure that whatever you choose to do next is something that will make you happier, more successful, and more fulfilled. It will make sure that your next step is a step in the right direction, not just another step.
While I take my clients through a series of many questions, here are a few of my favorites:
In her soul searching, Sabine identified that she needed to find and surround herself with her “people,” uncovered what she needed to feel safe and secure, learned she needed to delegate more, and discovered that her direct approach was getting in her way.
Max realized what was most important to him at this stage of his life, identified the limiting beliefs that were getting in his way, learned to stop comparing himself to others, and realized how important it was to infuse humor and joy into his everyday life.
Your Turn:
Grab a journal. Ask yourself these questions and allow the time and space to discover the answers.
Write everything down. Then, review what you wrote and highlight or circle what stands out or resonates the most. These are what you want to pay attention to as you move forward and think about what you’re doing next with your life.
Then, with a little soul-searching under your belt, it’s time to move on to step 3.
Step 3: What Are Your Options?
If you’re asking “What am I doing with my life?” you’re clearly not happy where you are. You know you want something else. But what is that “something”? This question allows you to explore your potential options.
At this point, it’s not about deciding the one thing or making the right choice; it’s about allowing your creative mind to expand and see all the possibilities.
If you hate your career, what new potential careers are on your mind? If you’re unhappy in your relationship, what can you do? If you’re feeling like you need change or an adventure, what could those possibly be?
Brainstorm ALL your options without worrying about whether they are possible or not (just yet). Make a list and keep asking yourself….what else? This allows you to dig deeper and see opportunities you might have otherwise not explored.
Your Turn
What are all of your possible options at this point in time? Don’t limit them if you can’t see how it’s possible, just get all your ideas out on paper.
Once you have your list of options, then you can move to the next step.
Step 4: Which Options Are the Best Fit Right Now?
Okay, so you have your list of options and possibilities. Now it’s time to narrow it down and explore those options in a little more depth.
Once Max had a complete list of potential career options (including advancing in his current role), he narrowed the list down to the top most interesting and compelling opportunities. We then worked through each of those in greater depth.
A fantastic way to do this is to envision your life “as if” you were in that new role/situation/relationship.
Max imagined himself living the life in his new career options. First, he imagined himself as an REI employee. Yes, he had grown a beard and was drinking from a metal mug.
But the next question was even more important. I asked him how he felt. He said while he was excited to be outdoors more, he realized he wouldn’t be fulfilled in that role. He definitely didn’t feel “jazzed.”
We went through all his options, envisioning what life would be like in each role until he found the one in which he felt the most connected. We could both feel a shift in his energy immediately…he was on to something.
Your Turn
Go back to your options list and circle the 1-3 that you feel most connected to, energized by, or engaged with. You’ll want to make sure those options fit what you want (question 1) and who you are (question 2).
Once you have a short list, imagine your life as if you took that as your next step. What would you think, feel, hear, and see? Does it feel good? You can also do some research at this point to learn more about each of your options.
Then, armed with information and an idea of the next best option for you, it’s time to move on to the next question.
Step 5: What’s Stopping You?
This is a big one. As you explore your options, it’s likely you may come up against some barriers.
Perhaps you have fears or limiting beliefs of what you can or can’t do or what someone said you were capable of. Maybe it’s lack of self-esteem or confidence.
When these come up, it doesn’t mean the option is wrong; it just means you need to dig a bit further to find out what’s going on. It’s important to explore what’s getting in your way.
With Max, he was being held back by a deep, long-time belief that he wasn’t good enough – that he wasn’t capable of taking on a higher level, higher risk role. We worked together until he could move past this perception and on to his next step.
Your Turn
Think about what’s getting in your way or stopping you from moving forward. Once again, don’t stop at your first answer. Ask yourself “what else?” until you identify what’s getting in your way.
Then, it’s time to move to the last question.
Step 6: What Can You Do to Move Forward?
You’ve narrowed down and explored your options, and now it’s time to take action to get past asking yourself “What am I doing with my life?” I know this part is hard.
What if it isn’t right? What if there is something else out there? What if it’s the worst decision I ever make?
If you’re unhappy where you are now, what is the bigger risk: staying where you are out of fear of doing the wrong thing OR moving forward and seeing where it leads you? It’s better to rock the boat than to die sinking in it, right?
Once you’ve decided, it’s time to act. What’s your first step? Take it.
Give yourself a deadline, a timeline, or a goal to make it happen so you can move from ideas to reality.
Your Turn
Make a decision about which option is best for you to move forward into the life you want. Then, take the first step towards that option. Then, the next and the next one after that.
Final Thoughts
So, what are YOU doing with your life?
Just the sheer fact that you’re asking yourself what you’re doing with your life is a step in the right direction. A mentor of mine always said that 90% of solving a problem is awareness that it exists. You know you need to do something.
Now, if you’re serious about moving forward, it’s time to take the time and put in the effort and answer the questions above. Then, like Sabine and Max, be willing to take action, even if you’re not exactly sure how it’s going to play out.
It’s your life, and, yes, it can be everything you’ve imagined.
“What am I doing with my life” – 7 steps to finally work it out
“What am I doing with my life?”
Have you been asking yourself this question?
It’s a big question, but it’s also a common one.
We all want to fulfill our potential and make a big impact on life.
After all, we only get life once and we want to make the most of it.
But if you’re asking yourself this question, then you might feel that you’re not doing enough.
You feel like you’re going to be disappointed when you reach the end of your life.
But it doesn’t need to be like this.
We all have the ability to make change, and the fact that you’re reading this article now means that you want to make change.
That’s a great first step.
So in this article, we’re going to figure out what you really want to do with your life so you can start taking purposeful action.
1) What’s your “why”?
I know it sounds lame, but understanding your “why” is the key to motivation, which will unlock the door to taking action and finding fulfillment.
German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche once said, ‘He who has a why can endure any how.’
The question is, how do you find your “why”?
What’s important to remember is that this isn’t some big esoteric question.
You just need to decide what’s important for you at this current time.
Write down a list of things that you want to achieve in life and that you enjoy doing.
Maybe it’s buying a house and spending time with your friends and family.
The answers might be different for everyone. But it’s very hard to find your “why” if you don’t know what’s important to you.
Next, you should make a list of things that you are actually doing in your life right now.
Now you can match up this list with your “why”?
For example, is it really important to run that extra Math class when that could be time spent with your children?
Do you have to spend money on dinner at an expensive restaurant when that could be money saved that goes towards buying a house?
The trick is to get rid of the unimportant things and focus on things that actually fulfill your “why”.
4) If money were no object, what would you do?
At some level, money is a driver for all of us. Maybe not the number one driver, but it plays a part.
So, perhaps it’s time to look at the job you’re doing now and ask yourself if you’d still be doing it if money were no object.
So, if that was the case, what would you do? Be practical – you probably aren’t going to be a professional footballer or model, but really think about what you’re perfect job would be.
How are you going to work towards that?
Whatever it is, I can guarantee you that it won’t happen overnight. It takes time to build your perfect circumstance in life.
But if this is what you truly want to do, then it’s going to give you a “why” to get there.
Watch this video by spiritual Alan Watts on why considering this question could be life changing for you.
5) Stay clear and focused
If you’re not clear on why you’re doing something, then you’re going to waste time and you’ll feel lost.
When understand your “why”, your actions are always meaningful.
You’ll be confident, calm and ready to take action.
When your focus is elsewhere, you’ll feel cloudy and lacking in motivation.
When you ask yourself, “what am I doing with my life”, it shows that you’re not clear on your “why”.
You might even start questioning your life choices, harboring resentment and regrets.
But these emotions aren’t helpful.
You need to focus on what you have now and what you can realistically achieve in the future.
Ask yourself: What preoccupies your mind the most?
If it’s not your “why”, then no wonder you’re feeling lost and unsure.
What you spend time focusing on and taking action for is your choice. It’s up to you to take responsibility.
Here’s a technique to get your mind to focus on the present moment:

What am I doing with my life? It’s such a big question to ask, but one that everyone has pondered at some point.
I know what you’re thinking. You want to wake up each morning ready to embrace the day ahead. You want to feel alive, satisfied, and empowered. You want to look back in 30, 40, or 50 years’ time and see a life well spent.
But right now you’re in a dark place. You struggle out of bed each morning with a feeling of dread at the day that awaits you. You feel empty, unhappy, and stuck. You don’t even want to think 30, 40, or 50 years ahead because all you can see is a future that’s dull, repetitive, and tragically unfulfilling.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
The first step towards a life you can look forward to is one you can take today. All you have to do is keep reading, because in this article we’ll explore the path from consternation to inspiration.

Have You Got A Why?
Sure, it’s a bit of a cliché in the personal development bubble, but figuring out your ‘why’ or your reason for doing what you do is actually a very important part of the process.
Imagine you have a portable, personal wind turbine connecting directly into your mind, body, and spirit. Your why is the wind. Turn to face your why and your turbine rotates, energizing you as it does so. Turn in any other direction and your energy levels drop.
Figuring out your why involves identifying those things that fill you with energy. Career success, family life, hobbies, love, and personal development are just some of the most common.
Ask yourself this question: if money were no object, what would you be doing right now?
Your answers will provide a window into your why. If, for example, you would be sitting on a beach with a cocktail in one hand and a good book in the other, your why involves relaxation and travel. If you see yourself running a charity for disadvantaged kids, then your why is based upon giving and helping others.
Where’s Your Focus At?
Your mind cannot be in two places at once. Your focus is limited and you choose what you do with yours as each second passes.
When you focus on your why, when you turn those turbine blades towards the wind, you feel enthusiastic, content, determined, and calm. Focus elsewhere and you risk feeling run down, unhappy, and stressed.
The question “what am I doing with my life?” only ever occurs when you are not focused on your why. Your attention is so taken up by other things that you are unable to replenish your stores of energy. The longer this goes on for, the more you begin to question your direction of travel.
You find yourself having a grumble about your past circumstances and the choices you made that have led you to this point. You lose sight of the good in your life and the potential for this to grow.
Stop. Please. You’re not doing yourself any favors.
Consider your thoughts for a moment. What are you thinking about most? If it’s not your why, no wonder you’re feeling a bit existentially unsure.
What you spend time thinking about is a choice you have the power to make. Choosing to spend more time focused on your why is a sure-fire way to feel better about your life.
What Do You Already Have In Your Life?
Your why already exists in your life. All you have to do is take a good look and realize that it’s there.
Remember, your why is what energizes you, and everyone gets energized from time to time. Take note of what you’re doing and who you’re with when you feel this surge in energy; this is the essence of your why.
Maximizing this why comes down to recognizing its existence and being grateful for it. Never take for granted the moments when you feel most alive.
But it doesn’t stop at what you’ve got now…
What Do You Want Less/More Of?
To help you figure out where to place your focus, you must first figure out two things: what you want less of and what you want more of.
You should have a broad ‘why’ in your head by now, but it helps to get more specific. Develop a more detailed picture of what does and does not constitute the life you’d like to lead and you can begin to shift your focus in the right direction.
Grab a piece of paper and a pen and draw a vertical line down the middle of the page. In the left hand column, write down all of the things that you want less of in your life. Likewise, list the things you want more of in the right hand column.
Work stress, financial worry, health problems, and relationship trouble are examples of things that might go in your “less of” column. Time with kids, holidays, meaningful friendships, and peace of mind might go into your “more of” column.
Keep this piece of paper on you, or put it somewhere prominent where you’ll see it often. Make a choice to think less about the things on the left hand side, and make a choice to act in a way that will bring you the things on the right hand side.
Now this is very important, so pay attention: you should NOT focus your thoughts directly on the things you want more of, but rather on the things that can bring them to you. Dwelling too long on the things you want more of isn’t a proper alignment with your why because you become fixated on what you do not have rather than what you DO have.
Your why is both real and in your head. When you experience your why directly, it invigorates you. When you are unable to be one with your why, you risk feeling deflated – if you allow your mind to dwell on this lack of why.
Instead of getting bogged down in negative thinking about your lack of why, think about all of the positive action you could take to align with it again. Each action you take should become more enjoyable as you turn bit by bit towards the wind and your turbine blades begin to spin faster and faster.
Who Are You Trying To Impress?
One thing to consider carefully is whether the why in your head matches the why in your heart. Your head can deceive; it can persuade you that you ought to be aiming for one goal simply because it is what others expect of you. Your heart does no such thing.
Keep asking the question as you go about taking action to align with your why: who am I trying to impress?
If your aspirations involve impressing others and making them envious/proud of you, then you are miscalculating the direction of your wind. If each step you take towards some end goal is not giving you more and more energy, then it is not the right goal to chase.
Don’t let other people try to dictate your why – they will almost certainly get it wrong. Only you know what your heart desires and this is what matters most, not the wishes of some family member, friend, or society. They may be disappointed if you take a different path to the one they have chosen for you, but if they truly care about you, they will soon come round as your eyes shine bright with passion and vigor.
What are you doing with your life? Perhaps it’s time to ask a different question: what is your why and what can you do to connect with it? If you’re feeling a little desolate and lost, don’t beat yourself up about it; everyone gets this way at some point. Just remember that your focus is a powerful tool in escaping the rut you’re in. Turn in the right direction and you’ll have so much energy, you won’t know what to do with it. Let this be the motivation you need to begin the journey of discovery that will ultimately lead you to a sense of contentment.

Текст песни What Am I Doing with My Life (Average Rap Band) с переводом
Dude on the door don’t believe i’m the dude from the group on the poster
Got dropped off outside of the club in the promoter’s pulsar
Told me to go to the back and stand in a line by the wall
Every time we perform here, he’s on the door here. and he wants to be the law
Bar tender won’t look my way. hey hey, can i get a gin and OJ?
Supposed to be on at 12 but he wanna sell more alks
So we gotta wait around all god damn night like we’re in the cells
And the sound man is an arsehole. and the back stage is the kitchen
And we’re sitting on the refrigerator that they keep all the chips in
Thought it was gonna be sweet to make a living as a musician
Serves my dumb as right for having ambition… mic check
Dude in the front rows yawning while we’re performing
2 dudes next to him talking, another 2 brawling
Young hoe in the front row, watched the whole show on her cell phone
Drunk bro looking unco doing that dumb dance with his elbows
Nobody really cares there here for the main act. most of them hate rap
I give em that ‘thank you you been great’ crap cause i get paid to say that
Then i pack up and i roll, jump in a cab, back to the hotel
Cause there ain’t nowhere to go, in this whole shit hole town
Lie on my bed watching darts. (ckkgg) something bout sharks
Open the curtain and look at the car park. this is the arse hole of the world
I hear the whole of the world laugh, while i stand in the bath
Trynna make a living making my art. sometimes i gotta ask…
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
We just got 200 buck for the show
We just did 200 buck worth of blow
All of my doe just went out the window. then i woke up in a old
Hotel and they telling me now that i owe them a lotta doe. i said i don’t know
Who put the hole in the wall / what do i owe u for all of the blow that we
No i’m not going to court. it’s only a fork. i never broke any law
If anyone asks / nobody talk / tell em you don’t even know me at all
Woke up in all of my clothes on the floor / this the first show of tour
like i’m 25 acting like i won’t never die
I’m getting older than mega drive
And you probably won’t even get that line
Probably never even heard of ‘Never Mind’ but never mind
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
Life’s a bitch then you die
But life’s the shit when you’re high. Really high
So I live mine in the clouds feel like I never come down
Till I wake up on the couch, like a dead dog with his tongue out
Somehow thought it was a bright idea
Now I feel like I could die right here
I don’t wanna talk
Incase somebody might hear
How I feel when I’m this low
Trynna climb out this hole I’ve been digging
I been thinking that I might let go
And time goes on and now I’m fine
Spent 3 days in the dark. No lie. I don’t why
I don’t why it’s every weekend. Stead of the life I could be leading
If I just leave this shit behind and spend more time refining my lines
Instead of doing them but same old same old
In the bathroom of some shit hole club
With a bunch of people I don’t even know
And I don’t even know what they put in this shit
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?
Перевод песни What Am I Doing with My Life

Podcast Summary:
In this podcast I interview myself?? Is that a thing? IDK.
This episode is really just about me answering some questions about life. I don’t really know what I’m doing in life, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I want to know if there’s some sort of commonality to this. Are we in the matrix? Is there such thing as the butterfly effect? I have no idea, but I’m on a search to find out.
I want to know if there is there a key to life.
I think the answer is out there somewhere between all of us. So, I plan to interview all my family and friends with the same questions and hopefully be able to find something.
