When is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26 each year and is a national holiday in the UK.

When Boxing Day falls on a weekend, as it does in 2021, the Monday after it is declared a public holiday, too.

So this means Monday, December 27, 2021, is a bank holiday across the UK.

Boxing Day is primarily a British tradition, and the UK has exported it to Australia, Canada and New Zealand, where it has primarily become a day dedicated to shopping and sporting events.

Why is it called Boxing Day?

There are a few competing stories for the origin of the name, but none are definitive.

The first is that the day after Christmas was when servants of the wealthy were given time off to visit their family, as they were needed to work on Christmas Day.

Each servant would be given a box to take home with food, a bonus and gifts.

Another theory is that in the Victorian era, churches often displayed a box for parishioners to donate money.

Also, it was customary for tradespeople to collect «Christmas boxes» of money or gifts on the first week day after Christmas as a thank you for good service over the year.

The day is also known as St Stephen’s Day, remembering Stephen, who was the first Christian martyr as told in the Bible in the book of Acts.

How is Boxing Day celebrated?

Boxing Day is a time to spend with family or friends, particularly those not seen on Christmas Day itself.

It is also a day to eat left over turkey, and make bubble and squeak sandwiches.

The day used to be synonymous with hunting.

The 2004 foxhunting ban put an end to this, although many places still carry out drag hunts (the dogs chase a scent that has been laid out) to keep up the tradition.

Boxing Day is also a time when the Brits show their eccentricity by taking part in all kinds of bizarre traditions including swimming the icy cold English Channel, or legging it into the sea, fun runs and charity events.

Dramatic price reductions lure out millions of shoppers who even queue for hours before the shops open.

However, from December 16, anyone who tests positive for Covid will need to miss out on the sales while they isolate.

Where else is Boxing Day celebrated?

Boxing Day is mostly a Commonwealth tradition, with the likes of Canada, Australia and New Zealand celebrating the day alongside their companions in the UK.

Banks, post offices and many other businesses and organizations are closed on Boxing Day. However, stores and pubs are generally open, although they may open later and close earlier than usual.

December 26 is also a national holiday in Ireland, but there it is known as St Stephen’s Day.

This day has come to also be known as the «Day of the Wren» (pronounced «Day of the Ran»).

On the Day of the Wren, groups would go from door to door in their neighbourhood wearing old clothes and straw hats and playing music and dancing.

Depending on where you are from, these groups are either called Mummers or Wren-boys.

This tradition has died out in all but a few small spots of the country in recent years.

The saint, who was stoned to death for believing in Jesus, is also the patron saint of horses which could be where the hunting association came from.

Through our research for this page, we have discovered that Christmas Boxes were used in different ways:

To protect ships

During the Age of Exploration, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, A Christmas Box was used as a good luck device. It was a small container placed on each ship while it was still in port. It was put there by a priest, and those crewmen who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. If the ship came home safely, the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the voyage. The Priest would keep the box sealed until Christmas when he would open it to share the contents with the poor.

To help the poor

An ‘Alms Box’ was placed in every church on Christmas Day, into which worshippers placed a gift for the poor of the parish. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, which is why that day became know as Boxing Day.

A present for the workers

Many poorly paid workers were required to work on Christmas Day and took the following day off to visit their families. As they prepared to leave, their employers would present them with Christmas boxes. copyright of projectbritain.com

During the late 18th century, Lords and Ladies of the manor would «box up» their leftover food, or sometimes gifts and distribute them the day after Christmas to tenants who lived and worked on their lands.

The tradition of giving money to workers still continues today. It is customary for householders to give small gifts or monetary tips to regular visiting trades people (the milkman, dustman, coalman, paper boy etc.) and, in some work places, for employers to give a Christmas bonus to employees.

Schools across the country gather together gifts to be put in Christmas Boxes that are sent to poorer countries.

Who was St Stephen?

Stephen lived in Rome and was the first man to be killed for believing in the teachings of Jesus. His story is told in the Acts of the Apostles 6: 1 to 8: 2.

Some people claim that he shares this day with another St Stephen, who came from Sweden. St Stephen of Sweden is the patron saint of horses.

Boxing Day has long be associated with outdoor sports, especially horse racing and hunting.

What happens on Boxing Day in England?

Boxing Day Hunts

Traditionally Boxing Day was a day for fox hunting. Horse riders dressed in red and white riding gear, accompanied by a number of dogs called foxhounds, chased the fox through the countryside in the hope of tiring it out.

Eventually the hunters hope the fox will be so tired that the dogs will be able to catch it and kill it.

Fox Hunting Today

Many animal welfare campaigners object to fox hunting saying it is cruel to kill a fox in this way, while many participants view it as a crucial part of rural history in England, vital for conservation, and a method of pest control.

In November 2004, MPs voted to ban hunting with dogs in England and Wales. As from 18 February 2005 hunting with dogs became a criminal offence (although it is still legal to exercise hounds, chase a scent and flush out foxes to be shot).

It is still traditional to see horse riders dressed in red and white riding gear, accompanied by a number of dogs called foxhounds. However, today instead of chasing a fox they chase a human runner. No living thing is killed.

Family Time

Traditionally, Boxing Day is the day when families get together. It is a day of watching sports and playing board games with the family.

Many families will go on walks in the countryside together on Boxing day.

Shopping

In recent times, some shops have broken from tradition and started opening on Boxing Day to start the New Year sales. Hundreds of people now spend Boxing Day morning in queues outside shops, waiting to be the first to dive for the sales racks as the doors opened.

Hunting of the Wren

It is unlucky to kill a wren on any day apart from Boxing Day. Hunting of the Wren on Boxing Day was once a popular activity in England.

Groups of young boys know as ‘Wren boys’ would hunt a wren and then tie the dead bird to the top of a pole, decorated with holly sprigs and ribbons. With blackened faces, the group would sing at houses in hopes for coins, gifts or food.

Those that gave money to the boys would receive a feather from the wren as thanks. The collected money was then used to host a village dance.

This odd ritual was not restricted to England. It was prevalent in some continental countries on Boxing Day as well as the Isle of Man, Wales and Ireland.

Christmas in Ireland

In Ireland, 26th December is known as «St Stephen’s Day» rather than «Boxing Day», and is famous for its «Wren Boys».

Many years ago the Wren Boys would go out on St Stephen’s Day, catch a wren and kill it by throwing stones at it, just as St Stephen was stoned to death. Then they would blacken their faces with burnt cork, tie the dead wren to a pole and parade around the town with it, knocking at all the houses for money.

Nowadays the «Wren Boys» just go round our town in fancy dress (usually the men wear women’s dresses and wigs), carrying a stuffed bird in a cage, singing carols and collecting money for charity.

Our town also has a famous fox hunt on St Stephen’s Day. Some people think this is just as cruel as stoning a wren, but in Ireland it hasn’t been banned yet.

Background and symbols

There are a number of stories behind the origin of the term “Boxing Day”. It used to be customary for employers to give their employees or servants a gift of money or food in a small box on this day. This is still customary for people who deliver letters or newspapers, although the gift may be given before Christmas Day. In feudal times, the lord of the manor would gather all those who worked on his land together on this day and distribute boxes of practical goods, such as agricultural tools, food, and cloth. This was payment for the work that they had done throughout the year.

Other stories relate to servants being allowed to take a portion of the food left over from the Christmas celebrations in a box to their families and the distribution of alms from the Church collection box to poor parishioners. These traditions have evolved into the Christmas hampers that many large employers distribute, although these are now often distributed in the week before Christmas.

An Extra Day of Celebration in the Festive Season

Boxing Day turns Christmas into an extra long holiday. But what is it? What are its special traditions and how did it get its name?

One of the nicer Christmas customs in the UK is that little bit of extra celebration called Boxing Day. It’s the day after Christmas but it’s also a UK National Holiday. So if December 26 falls on a weekend, the following Monday becomes a holiday.

During particularly lucky years (like 2016) when Christmas Day is a Sunday the following Monday is the legal Christmas holiday and Boxing Day is celebrated on Tuesday. Voilà, an instant four-day weekend is created.

What Does Boxing Day Celebrate?

That’s a good question. Too bad nobody really knows the answer. There are of course, loads of theories. Here are just a few of the suggested origins of Boxing Day:

The Boxing Day tradition goes back at least hundreds of years. Samuel Pepys, in his diary, mentions it in the mid 17th century. However far back it goes, Queen Victoria only made Boxing Day a legal holiday in England and Wales in the mid 19th century. In Scotland, Boxing Day was not a national holiday until the late 20th century.

How do People Celebrate?

Traditionally, people visit friends and more distant relations to exchange small gifts, sample a slice of traditional Christmas cake or have a light meal of holiday leftovers.

The day is also given over to spectator and participation sports. Contrary to what some people say, Boxing Day is not named for boxing matches. But there are loads of football matches, racing meets and all kinds of major public and private sports events on the day.

Racing Meets and Fox Hunts

It may be just a coincidence (though some would say there’s no such thing as a coincidence) but St Stephen (whose feast is celebrated on the same day as Boxing Day, remember) is the patron saint of horses. Horse racing and point to point horse events are traditional Boxing Day activities.

В календарь всегда старались ставить матчи команд, географически располагающихся недалеко друг от друга, чтобы ни футболистам, ни болельщикам не пришлось ехать слишком далеко, а в расписание пихали как можно больше игр. Так случился самый результативный Boxing Day в истории, от упоминания которого никуда не скрыться: 26 декабря 1963-го 20 команд высшего дивизиона забили 66 голов в 10 матчах.

На деле отрезок между Рождеством и Новым годом вмещает в себя гораздо больше, чем 2 тура АПЛ за 5 дней. Это квинтэссенция британской истории и местного отношения к праздникам. Особенно остро ее важность ощущается в 2020-м, когда все на острове внезапно остались без Рождества.

Мой первый футбольный Boxing Day случился в 2016-м. Универсальное правило – праздники надо проводить с теми, кого любишь, – отправило меня в Лестер. В Рождество и на следующий день в Англии не работает почти никакой общественный транспорт, так что ехать из Лондона пришлось на перекладных.

В праздниках переплелись обычаи рабочего класса: еще в 19 веке в футбол играли 25 декабря, потому что для многих рабочих это был один из немногих полноценных выходных – и возможность посмотреть футбол. По такой же логике 150 лет назад игры проводили в радиусе Пасхи, когда некоторые тогда еще полупрофессиональные клубы умещали по три игры в 4 дня (в Британии выходные также пасхальные пятница и понедельник).

До 1960-х матчи спокойно проводили в само Рождество. Британцы добавили к футболу скачки (гонка имени Короля Георга VI всегда проводится 26-го) и регбийные матчи.

Сегодня уместить все 10 матчей АПЛ в один день можно, но лига старательно размазывает игры по всему фестивальному периоду (отрезок между Рождеством и Новым Годом). В этом году с 26 декабря по 4 января английский футбол играет ежедневно – за исключением 31-го.

В мой праздничный 2016-й «Лестер» предсказуемо проиграл: у «лис» худшая статистика результатов в Boxing Day среди команд топ-дивизионов. Два года спустя я не решилась на еще один междугородний подвиг и поехала в Западный Лондон, чтобы посмотреть на любимого дедушку Раньери.

«Фулхэм» сыграл вничью с «Вулвз», но настроения это не испортило. Болельщики все так же нацепили на себя рождественские свитера: самую страшную и нелепую одежду в истории, которую романтизировала британская поп-культура во главе с фильмом «Дневник Бриджит Джонс» и героем Колина Ферта.

Я пару лет подряд покупала самые простые нефутбольные свитера за 5-10 фунтов, которые честно грели меня на декабрьских матчах, но умирали после второй же стирки и без сожаления отправлялись в мусорку в начале января. В этом же году утро Boxing Day я встречала в компании фаната «Манчестер Юнайтед», с которым мы смотрели максимально принципиальную для обоих игру «Лестер» – «МЮ» (2:2). 25 фунтов, неделя ожидания доставки, – и человек нацепил на себя колючий свитер с оленем, у которого помпон вместо носа. Все это ради пары костюмированных шуточек в адрес «Лестера» и лишь 45 минут ношения, потому что больше в этом действительно теплом свитере просидеть в теплой квартире невозможно.

«И что, стоило оно того? – Тысячу раз да».

В этом году полноценного Рождества в Британии не случилось. Коронавирус фактически разделил страну на отдельные части: Северная Ирландия, Уэльс и Шотландия уже несколько месяцев живут по своим региональным правилам, и решениям правительства по факту подчиняется только Англия. Она же оказалась поделена на 4 уровня карантина: в первом жизнь более-менее функционирует в привычном режиме, в четвертом – почти полный локдаун, с ограничением на встречи между домохозяйствами и работающими лишь продуктовыми магазинами и аптеками.

Перемещения между уровнями де-юре запрещены: по факту же неделю назад, когда обновленные правила должны были вступить в силу с полуночи, вокзалы Лондона превратились в кадры из фильмов-апокалипсисов. Рискующие остаться на праздники в одиночестве лондонцы из регионов ринулись домой (очевидно, развозя ковид по стране).

Дополнительно ситуацию усугубил новый штамм коронавируса, обнаруженный в Британии: он не более опасный (по крайней мере, так утверждают ученые), но распространяется на 70% быстрее. Те, кто планировал принимать гостей, оказались наедине с огромными индейками и едой на 10-15 человек. На улицах Лондона непривычно много людей: обычно в праздники город вымирает и отсутствие местных компенсируется лишь туристами, но в 2020-м по открытым паркам и районным улочкам слонялись не сумевшие уехать к семье горожане. Центр стоял пустым, а подвыпившая молодежь в общественном транспорте превратила рождественскую атмосферу в новогоднюю: в ночь с 31 декабря на 1 января здесь особо не празднуют, но клубы и бары обычно работают именно на любителей тусовок.

Оставшиеся в одиночестве преимущественно молодые лондонцы сбивались в условно разрешенные support bubbles – «пузыри поддержки», в рамках которых можно встречаться с живущими не в вашей квартире друзьями или партнерами (вот здесь поподробнее об этом новом для всех термине). Формально такие группы регистрировать нигде не надо, и меня ни разу не спросили, к кому именно в гости я направляюсь. Многим же к концу года совсем не хватало сил перебороть обстоятельства и придумывать праздник, и 25-го люди просто остались дома, уткнувшись в Netflix и столовыми ложками выгребая мороженое прямо из упаковок.

Но утром 26-го в это странное рождество внезапно вернулась нормальность – традиционным для Boxing Day футболом. Болельщики смогли пойти на стадионы лишь в паре городов 2-го уровня, и вы не представляете, с каким нетерпением я жду вечернего матча «Ливерпуль» – «Вест Бром», чтобы снова посмотреть на 2 тысячи людей на трибунах. Юрген Клопп заметил, что никогда больше не будет воспринимать полные трибуны как данность, а все игроки в интервью и праздничных обращениях в этот период говорили болельщикам: мы очень скучаем по вам, и нам всем очень сложно друг без друга, но пожалуйста, давайте потерпим еще немного, чтобы все меры предосторожности наконец-то можно было отменить, – и обязательно побережем старшее поколение.

Я знаю несколько фанатов, которые впервые за полгода вернулись к традиции совместного просмотра чего-то по Zoom (за первые месяцы весеннего локдауна такое развлечение быстро наскучило вместе с онлайн-квизами и вечеринками) – и на Boxing Day вместе с родными смотрели матчи своей команды по сети. Я же провела утро за увлекательной болельщицкой перепалкой в рамках support bubble, а вечером поехала на пустой «Эмирейтс». Вокруг почти не было традиционных праздничных украшений, а мою красную шапку встретили шутками в духе: «А где остальные 6 гномов?»

Пока коллега с ближневосточного телеканала угощала всех шоколадом, стюарды раздавали горячий шоколад, а один из журналистов действительно принес на матч коробочку с остатками рождественского ужина, «Арсенал» совершил еще одно чудо – и впервые с начала ноября выиграл.

Возможно, на ближайшие матчи (а в планах – 7 матчей за 9 дней, как тебе такие жалобы на календарь, Юрген?) мне нужно срочно купить уродливый рождественский свитер.
