The second reason of learning English is to survive in other countries. I like a trip abroad. If you can’t speak English, you may be not able to buy things which you need because you can’t tell a clerk what you want to buy.

Being able to listen to and speak English is the one of the best way to solve those troubles.

The skill of English I would like to strengthen most is listening and speaking. I think that listening to and speaking English are the most important things for me. There are many ways of improving my listening skill. My way is watching American movies with focusing on sound of speaking. I like American movies, comedies and TV dramas. I don’t like studying, so I want to enjoy studying.

This way of improving listening skill is the best for me. And for improving speaking skill, I speak in front of the mirror about what happened at the day or what I think. This way of practicing speaking skill may be strange, but I think that this way is very effective to polish speaking skill. I was taught this practice way by my English teacher, who I respected.

How Can I Use English in My Life?

Think about a time when you were at your local pharmacy and a tourist needed help filling a prescription. The pharmacist and the tourist just could not seem to understand each other. English could save the day. English could help that tourist heal from an illness or feel more comfortable.

Now think about a time when you were traveling abroad and you could not speak the local language. Have you ever done this before? It can be a little bit scary. You might need to find a certain bus stop or the nearest restroom—quickly! Luckily, many people around the world speak English, so a little bit of English can solve your problems abroad, no matter what country you are visiting.

One day in the future, you might go into an interview at a large corporation and find that your interviewer is a native English speaker. Even if they want to speak in your native language at first, your hard work to learn English—the international language of business—is about to pay off. Talk to them in English to demonstrate your skills, and they will see that you can be a very valuable employee.

English is only the third most-spoken language by native speakers. However, when you count all the people who speak English as a second, third or fourth language, then English is definitely the most-spoken language around the world!

English is really everywhere, so you will be able to communicate with native speakers and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) speakers all around this huge planet. You will help others, communicate with a huge diversity of people and help yourself unlock all sorts of life’s doors.

That is great, right? This will hopefully give you a little motivation to study English today. Now, keep reading! We are now going to talk about all the most important reasons why you should study English. Once you read these, you will stay motivated for your whole life!

The Best Reasons to Learn English

1. You will discover that English is easy to learn

Most people think that learning a language is very difficult.

In many cases, it is easier for certain people to learn English because English is related to their native language. For example, for people from Europe who are learning English, they find that English is closely related to their languages. German is very close to English. French has influenced English a lot. Plus, English speakers can be found nearby in Great Britain! They can easily travel to practice, and it is very likely that they will meet English speakers in their home countries.

For people who live in different parts of the world and speak languages that are not related to English, English can sound very foreign, confusing and frustrating.

Availability of resources. Because English is such a widespread language and is found all over the globe, the resources you can use to learn English are endless. It’s easy to teach yourself English because there are tons of resources on the internet for free. Sometimes you will need to pay a little bit to take an English course online or access another resource, but they are often worth the money.

So, get started! Watch cartoons or sitcoms in English on YouTube, Netflix, Hulu or other English TV websites for free.

For additional personalized English resources, you can even go online to hire an English speaker to communicate with and teach you on Skype.

English is everywhere. Take advantage of this fact!

2. You can find more job opportunities

Many large companies around the world require that their employees speak English. In some cases, these companies are requiring their workers to only use English.

As the world becomes more global (better connected), it is only natural that big businesses will want and need to communicate more. Right now, everyone is trying to learn and communicate with English. English is becoming the common language that people from different countries and cultures can use to communicate with one another.

For example, imagine that a businessperson from Israel, who speaks English and Hebrew, wants to do business with a someone from South Africa, who speaks English and Afrikaans. Even though they both started learning English as a second language in elementary school, they can use English to communicate with each other!

As Rakuten’s CEO Hiroshi Mikitani told CNN, “if you want to become successful in other countries, you need to internationalize your headquarters.” Because people from around the world know English and use it to communicate with everyone else, it is important that employees also know English. English is an important part of this process of becoming more internationalized.

You do not just need English to work at American, Australian and British companies. In my own experience as an English professor in Korea, many students have come to me asking for help with required English interviews at Samsung, LG and other large Korean companies.

By learning English, you can be well-prepared for interviews with any large, international companies. And, luckily, there are plenty of resources out there to help you practice for your English interview.

Not to mention, English is great for careers with travel, tourism and hospitality.

3. You can become better educated

Not only does knowing a foreign language expand your brain power, but you can use your knowledge of English to learn more and more things about the world.

These days it is relatively easy to take an English class. Whether you take this class online, on Skype or in the classroom, there are many options out there.

But here is a new idea for you: Have you ever considered trying to take a class about a specific subject in English?

Imagine all of the things you could learn by taking an American history class from an American, a math class from an Australian or an English literature class from a British teacher?

This kind of class, taught completely in English, will let you learn about culture, intonation, body language, vocabulary and slang while also learning about an interesting subject like history, math or anything else that you personally love to study!

Furthermore, there are many great works of literature, science, history and social science that were written in English first. Do not lose anything by trying to read a translation. Instead, you will come closer to the heart (the main idea) of what the writer is trying to say by reading the original writing in English.

4. You can easily travel anywhere in the world

I am a native English speaker and I have traveled to many places in the world. Communication has almost never been a problem for me, because people all around the world speak English. I have been able to speak English in every country I have visited. While learning a few words in the local language is always a good idea—it is polite and shows respect—English will help you with the details of travel.

In many places where you will travel, people find English important for their businesses. They need to know English in order to communicate with potential clients and customers. In most hotels, at least one employee will speak English—often, many of the employees speak English. This makes it easier for customers to get what they need and spend their money.

Even people in small town markets around the world know how to bargain with English speakers.

You will find that some of your best interactions will be with people on the streets who are trying to sell you something or who are looking to improve their English speaking skills. English will bridge the communication gap on your travels and make traveling a breeze.

5. You will know the global language

This has taken a long time, and many good things and bad things have happened in the process. English spread through war, trade, slavery and religious missionaries. History is complicated and it is not always pleasant, but today we can recognize that English is being spoken everywhere in the world.

We cannot change what happened in the past. However, we can use English as a positive power! We can use it to bring the world together, to communicate with people from foreign countries and to understand each other better.

Not only will it make traveling easier, but English will also allow you to know more about global trends, culture and social issues. It will give you a deeper understanding of people’s different perspectives on life.

You will be able to communicate with people who do not speak your native language, and you will be able to consume thousands more news sources, blogs, books and songs.

Knowing English will let you be part of a global conversation!

6. You will learn about culture

Language and culture cannot be separated. Language is culture, and culture is language. Simply said, knowing English will give you a better understanding of people who live in English-speaking countries. Knowing the English language gives you more insight into how people think, live and work.

If you do not know about the culture of English-speaking countries, this might lead to misunderstanding what people are saying in English.

It is not enough to just know basic words and phrases. To communicate well in English, you must know about things like tone, body language and facial expressions. You might think an English speaker is being crass, rude or dismissive when they are not!

One way to improve your cross-cultural communication skills is to practice using authentic content in English.

In this case, the FluentU language learning website and app could be a helpful resource, as it not only has authentic content in English but also unique features like videos equipped with interactive subtitles, the ability to make flashcards and quizzes to review video content, and a dictionary that puts words into context.

If you understand which words or expressions are acceptable and unacceptable in English-speaking cultures, this might save you from a cultural misunderstanding with your English-speaking friends and coworkers.

7. You can improve your understanding of science

If you want to learn, publish or speak with authority in the sciences, you must learn English.

Pharmacists, engineers and doctors around the world must always learn English along with their other subjects in university. In most cases, their other class subjects are taught in English or come with an English textbook. Most medical schools in America require English as part of their coursework. In other countries, this happens too.

Science research is primarily published in English, and most abstracts (the summary of the research) are written in English so that international scientists can read them.

Getting a jump start in learning English can give you a head start in medical school, help you earn a biology degree or it could give you the tools you need to study at one of the world’s best universities for science.

8. You can date more people

Okay. Maybe getting a great, romantic date is all the motivation you need.

Well, you will be happy to know that English will increase the number of people you could possibly date. Try meeting people who speak English on a dating site, through Facebook or another social media site.

English speakers are generally very understanding when talking to people who are learning English, and they have plenty of patience. Do not worry if your English skills are not perfect yet. You are already very interesting because you are bilingual!

9. You can improve your confidence

I doubt there is any person alive who does not wish they could speak another language. It is a skill that everyone would love to add to their resume. With a little bit of studying every day, you can have this skill. Then you can be very proud of your ability to communicate with a wide variety of people.

Learning a language is hard and everyone knows it. People will automatically respect your commitment to learning and maintaining your English. Your ability to help and communicate with people will help you earn respect.

People will also seek you out to learn about you and your perspective on things. They will be interested in you and your experience in life. They will want to know the thoughts, hopes, fears and opinions of someone from another culture. When you feel more like you are more interesting, you will feel more special and confident!

10. You will exercise your brain

If nothing else, learning English will make you smarter and keep your brain strong.

So, be smarter, more confident and helpful, get a job and date more.

That sounds good, right?

English is one key that unlocks a world of possibility.

Today, knowing English is a sign of the times, a sign of education and good manners.

Studying English on courses has a number of advantages. We have selected 7 of the most, in our opinion, essential reasons that speak in favor of a group study of the English language.

Financial:

A native speaker from the United Kingdom or the United States is now not uncommon both in metropolitan areas and in small cities. Once upon a time, in the late 90s, a foreigner was exotic in our country, especially a native of Western Europe or America. Nowadays, many specialists live in Russia for a long time, professionally teaching.

Group courses with a native speaker from an English speaking country can be found for a reasonable price. Fortunately, the competition in the market is now high and the choice is huge. So, the average price per academic hour in Moscow starts at 450 rubles.

Linguistic:

Group practice gives you more opportunities to adequately assess your level of advancement, analyze both your mistakes and the mistakes of your colleagues. Discussion and a variety of opinions in the classroom will allow you to cover a wider range of problems, memorize more lexical units, speech structures.

Healthy student competition builds interest in the subject, encouraging you to reach out to strong students. Working in pairs and playing forms of training will allow you to develop communication skills, associative thinking and reaction speed faster.

Cognitive:

Another weighty argument for critics: learning and using a foreign language is a good prevention of dementia for people of mature and old age. After all, the study and practice of a language is in itself a mental exercise, it keeps the brain activity in good shape, trains memory, develops imagination.

Culturological:

Think of coeducation as more than just a lesson, take it as joining a club of like-minded people. Here you get a unique opportunity to communicate live with a representative of another culture, learning it firsthand.

The speaker will reveal the peculiarities of his mentality not only through linguistic forms, but also through traditions, art, and everyday life. It is a valuable resource in understanding the many unexplained in behavior, habits, creativity. This is the key to interpreting the cultural code of a people and, if you like, civilization.

Social:

Agree, training in a team expands the circle of communication, helps to acquire new acquaintances, including foreign ones. Academic fellows can easily become your good buddies and even friends. There are chances to practice with classmates at any time, mutually improving English.

Interesting and informative leisure time, along with the spirit of competition and the feeling of a close-knit team, will have a beneficial effect on your socialization. In addition, group socialization increases the effectiveness of learning, as it motivates students to quality interaction and feedback with each other.

Creative and motivational:

You will find that the learning process is conducive to creativity and self-discovery of new sources of inspiration. You can start by translating your favorite song, watching a movie with English subtitles, or in the original. Some keep diaries, try to write poetry, and are motivated to travel to the countries of the target language.

Immersion in the linguistic atmosphere contributes to the setting of new goals, the synthesis of new ideas. Fresh knowledge and acquired experience will force you to look at life in a different way: they will generate desires, open up a new dream to you. Creative self-realization increases the level of intellectual, free energy, produces hormones of happiness, which makes your life more conscious and fulfilling.

Psychological:

From the point of view of psychology, the collective learning format makes it possible to overcome one’s complexes, overcome fears, and challenge oneself in the end. Undoubtedly, it will increase your self-confidence, raise your self-esteem, and help strengthen and develop interpersonal relationships. Studying in a team will form stress resistance, courage, and help get rid of shyness and insecurity in public speaking.

When choosing a course, it is necessary to take into account that the maximum effect is achieved with a native speaker teacher, since in this case there is a complete immersion in the natural language environment. It will not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the course program and clarify what aids and resources your teacher uses.

And remember: in the study of any business, and even more so a foreign language, it is extremely important to have a strong and high-quality motivation. Nourish it, don’t let it weaken. The modern world provides endless opportunities for knowledge, communication and creativity, regardless of distance and time zones.

Success in learning!

Why is it important to learn English today?

I think everyone will agree that knowledge is never superfluous. Probably, nothing that a person once learned can harm him in life, in extreme cases, it simply will not be useful. But this is not about English! In the modern world, it is becoming more and more in demand, and sometimes even necessary.

Ways to learn English?

Secondly, there is a lack of schedule and accountability, that is, with this method it is very easy to relax, today there is no mood, tomorrow I will learn, etc.

A good foreign language school will offer you:

Why learn English?

Surely, many of you have come across such a task, be it at school, at university, when applying for a job and in other life situations.

How to write an essay on the reasons for learning English?

In principle, an essay on this topic must necessarily be in the arsenal of a schoolchild / student or an ordinary person, otherwise you never know how the circumstances will turn out. First, let’s figure out what are the reasons for learning a foreign language, then consider the rules for writing an essay, then go directly to the essay itself.

Why do we learn foreign languages?

Let’s together with you, dear readers, identify the reasons why people learn foreign languages. Why is it necessary to be able to speak English? In fact, there are a huge number of such reasons, and each person can name his own specific reasons why he decided to study English or another foreign language.

There are many individual reasons: someone will say that learning English is fashionable, someone is forced by circumstances, someone goes abroad, and English is an international language and it will come in handy everywhere.

Someone, especially girls, dreams of marrying a foreigner. Someone is forced by parents (if we are talking about children). Some people just want to be polyglot and try to master as many languages as possible. In general, as you can see, there can be many reasons to speak English, and each one has their own.

But we want to dwell on general reasons that will suit everyone, as well as that can be written about in our essay. Knowing foreign languages is really very useful and often such knowledge helps out in various everyday situations. Nowadays, we can say that English replaces other foreign languages, because it is an international language. If you speak English, then you speak all languages!

We conclude: there are many reasons to learn English, it is really necessary and useful to know it.

Several reasons to learn English «for yourself»

The right motivation is the best helper in any business, including learning English. But there are situations when we do not see the goal of learning in front of us. What to do in this case? Our answer: dig deeper, everything will be found. Let’s try to find incentives to learn English.

Good incentives will help you find the right English learning goal.

How to find motivation for those who learn the language not out of necessity, but «for themselves», as a hobby? According to our observations, such students are active, enthusiastic at the beginning of their studies, they are happy to do their homework and do not miss classes.

But it happens that after a few lessons a student quenches his thirst for new experiences, and he wants something new: to master yoga asanas or learn to crochet. How to pull yourself together in time and continue learning English? Let’s look for incentives together!

1. Stand out from the crowd

Being a black sheep is no longer scary, but terribly fashionable. Nowadays, people strive to stand out from the crowd, to show themselves as a bright personality. And this can be done using English.

No matter how many times we repeat that learning a language is useful, fashionable and adds +100 points to your karma, in Russia no more than 13-17% of citizens speak English, and half of them are at a rather low level.

Let’s fix these sad statistics! Each of us wants to be original and special, but some people understand by these words some kind of quirk, like bright blue hair or strange behavior. You can be original in the best sense of the word: be smart, well-read, learn English, strive for new knowledge.

When we lose the right to be different, we lose the privilege to be free.

As soon as we lose the right to be ourselves, we lose our freedom.

2. Fight excessive collectivism

A common situation: you started learning English «for a company» with someone, but after a while your friend dropped out for some reason.

You immediately want to follow his example, it’s like in the wonderful film «Gentlemen of Fortune»: «Everyone ran, and I ran!» How not to «run» after another in this situation? Try on the role of a rebellious individualist who defies general sentiments.

Try to remember what made you start learning the language (besides the desire to be “no worse than others”). Maybe you were talking about future prospects? Think about the possibilities that knowledge of English will open to you, change the inclination to collectivism to moderate individualism.

3. Use negative motivation

If you can’t use positive motivation, feel free to tackle negative, we talked about it in detail in the article «How to increase motivation for learning English.» We suggest doing it gently and carefully. Take a piece of paper, divide it into two columns.

In the first, write what you will gain by giving up English, for example: saving time and money, the table is not littered with notebooks and textbooks, etc.

Will you gain or lose more? To make it easier to compile a list, you can read the article «How Learning English Changes Your Lives», add items from it to the column listing what you will lose by quitting English. Take your time to draw conclusions, think for a few days before making a final decision.

4. Cut Your Way to Retreat

Even if you have never baked these ill-fated pies, in 99 out of 100 cases you will go over the entire Internet, interview familiar grandmothers, try a couple of dozen recipes and create a masterpiece! And why? Because they did not want to be disgraced, you would be ashamed if your words were considered a lie.

And now let’s move away from the kitchen to study. You need to make sure that you are ashamed to quit learning, so that you feel some responsibility for your words to other people.

Take care of this in advance: as soon as you started learning English, tell your friends, relatives, colleagues about it, write on the page on the social network. Be sure to share your accomplishments with others.

Thus, after a couple of months of classes, you will already be ashamed to quit, the thought will arise: «What will they think of me?»

5. Save smartly

You need to be smart about spending money. If you have been studying for 2-3 months, then your investment in your own knowledge will not pay off and will not bring profit in the future, because during this time you have mastered a very small part of the material.

When you study for a long time, in any case, you will receive some dividends from the lessons.

It is not a fact that this will be an increase in salary or employment in a prestigious company, it may also be intangible «goodies», for example, the development of memory, thinking, attention, ability to concentrate, etc.

You can approach the issue of savings from the other side. Almost all English courses or schools offer discounts if you pay in advance for a specific package of classes. Moreover, the more lessons you pay, the greater the discount will be.

Therefore, if you have the opportunity, pay in advance for the maximum possible number of classes. First, it is beneficial. Secondly, you will try to attend each lesson, because you paid for it with your own money.

Thirdly, if you decide to interrupt your studies, the money will be returned to you, but, as a rule, students rarely demand a refund, preferring to finish their studies on favorable terms.

6. Prove to yourself that you can follow through.

Before you burn all the bridges, think about how often you give up what you started. Do you follow through, reach your goal, or stop halfway to success? If you’ve got a bad habit of giving up what you started, check out the article “Learning English. Tips for Desperate Newbies ”, in which we explained in detail why people do not finish what they started. Gather your strength and try to overcome yourself. The ability to achieve your goals will come in handy in the future.

It is official in several countries and international organizations, such as the UN. Many vacancies with knowledge of English appear regularly in large companies.

Over the centuries, English has gradually acquired its unshakable status as an international language today. First of all, this was due to the fact that Great Britain successfully pursued a colonial policy in North America, Australia and in the rest of the world. Since the middle of the last century, the importance of this language began to grow exponentially.

Strengthening the position of the United States in the world and the popularization of Western pop culture, the emergence and development of transnational corporations and many other factors influenced the fact that the number of English-speaking people increased many times over. The volume of periodicals, literary, musical works, films, Internet sources in English today is unprecedentedly large.

Business English is the key to a successful career

In addition, more and more foreign companies are entering the Russian market. Their business is constantly demanding new employees, for whom proficiency in business English will be the norm.

Even in the case when your duties or the activities of your employer are not directly related to foreigners, English can be an excellent helper in your work. Many areas are tightly tied to the English-speaking base. Medical professionals, marketers and public relations specialists, economists and analysts, engineers and IT specialists will find it much easier to navigate in business professional vocabulary, concepts and processes if they master the English language.

This is not just a point in your resume that distinguishes you from your competitors, but a skill that can provide an interesting career, the opportunity to travel abroad, and invaluable professional and personal experience.

7 misconceptions about learning a foreign language

In order not to miss new useful materials, subscribe to site updates

There are over 6000 languages in the world. Some of them are more important, not better or more developed than others, but more important. Why? Because more people speak them. This does not mean that Finnish is not important to Finns or Turkish to Turks. It’s just that these languages are not that important to the rest of the world.

On the other hand, more than a billion people speak Chinese. In addition, 60% of Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese words come from Chinese. Knowledge of Chinese will help you learn these languages. The Chinese economy is developing rapidly, so knowledge of Chinese can be very useful.

Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French all belong to the same language group and are derived from Latin. Once you have learned one of them, you can easily learn the rest. Knowledge of Spanish opens the door to culture, history, music and business relationships with 800 million people in 60 countries.

The entertainment industry is born in the USA, most films and songs are in English. Plus, English has become the language of the Internet. If all companies launch a website in a local language, they subsequently add an English-language interface.

Imagine what a huge world will open up for you if you know English?

Many people want to learn a language, but are faced with the fact that they do not succeed. Most often this comes from the fact that they believe in the following beliefs that interfere with learning a foreign language.

Learning a foreign language is difficult

Learning a language is difficult only if you don’t want to. Learning a language takes time, but it’s not difficult. For the most part, you only need to listen and read. Soon, you begin to feel the satisfaction of understanding another language. Most often, in school and in courses, teachers try to get the student to talk when he does not know anything yet. This is what makes language learning so difficult.

One must have a penchant for languages

There is no need. Anyone who wants to learn the language can. In Sweden and Holland, most people speak more than one language. They can’t all be so gifted. It is not the inclination towards the language that is important, but the attitude towards its study.

You need to live in the country of the target language

Only children can perfectly learn a foreign language

Recent brain studies have shown that it remains flexible until old age. Take people who are losing their eyesight. They learn Braille easily. Adults have more vocabulary, it is easier for them to understand complex grammatical phenomena, so they are able to learn a foreign language much better and faster than children. The only thing adults need is childish interest and lack of fear of being ridiculed.

Learning a language requires a strict classroom atmosphere

This is the main problem. The classroom is an economical way to learn and an opportunity to meet new people. This way of teaching is considered traditional and respected. The only pity is that this is the most inappropriate place to learn a language. The more students are engaged in the classroom, the less effective the lessons.

Languages cannot be taught, they can be learned. Theoretical grammatical explanations are difficult to understand, remember, and even harder to use. Exercises of the same type get bored quickly. It is especially difficult to do all this in the classroom, as evidenced by the deplorable results of our graduates, who cannot communicate in the language after 10 years of studying it.

You must speak to learn a foreign language

Usually speaking a language is the goal of learning it, but speaking can wait. When you are comfortable with the language, you will find an opportunity to communicate. But when you’re just learning, listening more is important. If you just learn a couple of useful phrases, you will not be able to understand the interlocutor or keep the conversation going. One needs not to speak in order to learn, but to learn in order to speak.

I would like to learn a foreign language, but I have no time

How about the time you spend in line, on transport, doing housework, walking? Why not take this time to listen to an audio course on your player or read a brochure? If you start with 10-15 minutes a day, and if you really want to learn a language, then you will soon find that you already have half an hour to an hour a day to learn a foreign language. And this is quite enough to achieve a good result!

Why is it important to learn English

In the modern world, knowing only the native language is not enough. That is why more and more people are actively learning new languages. Everything to stay attractive in the labor market.

Why is it worth learning a language? Why is knowledge of English so important today? An English course is just the beginning. Knowledge of at least one foreign language is extremely important, and it is worth mentioning that not all knowledge comes so easily.

However, in order to start (and continue) learning a foreign language, you need the right motivation, you cannot make important decisions without knowing the benefits. It is difficult to list all the benefits of learning at least one foreign language, but in this article we will try to classify the most important of them.

If it is difficult to learn irregular verbs, then an online self-study guide for learning English quickly can help you.

Benefits of knowing English

When talking about the benefits of learning foreign languages, you usually hear the same arguments. Everyone points to the same aspects: professional benefits, more chances of finding a job, the opportunity to work abroad or in an international corporation. However, there are a number of advantages beyond this.

It cannot be hidden that all these elements are extremely important. Nowadays, learning English is practically a duty, but not everyone is sure about it.

The language barrier

For this reason, an English language course abroad is an extremely interesting option. All the while talking to native speakers every day, a person quickly becomes linguistically developed. Our language skills are constantly growing and our confidence increases with them.

As you can see, learning foreign languages has almost all the advantages, but their knowledge makes life much easier in today’s multinational reality. The term “global village” has never been more real than it is today, so make sure you understand your fellow tribesmen well.

How not to learn English: 5 common mistakes and how to avoid them

English has long ceased to be just a subject from the school curriculum. It is the most popular of all foreign languages. Why?

Here are some reasons why you need to learn English.

Mistake 1. Memorizing word lists

Your school teacher must have given you a long list of new words to memorize for your next lesson more than once. Or maybe you yourself reposted such lists on your wall, and then reproached yourself for not having time to sit down and learn it by heart. The good news is, it’s best not to do this at all.

It makes no sense to memorize words separately from the context. Such memorization is like a dead weight in the memory. The likelihood that a word from the list will pop up in your head at the right time is minimal.

Learn words in context. Compose and write a sentence with each new word. It is desirable that the proposal evokes a vivid association. For example, it concerned you personally or your loved ones. If you are still afraid to fantasize, just write out those sentences in which you met a new word.

Mistake 2. Trying to understand every word

When reading or listening to an authentic text in English, new words and expressions are inevitable. It doesn’t matter what level you have. A common practice among beginners is to stop and try to translate every word.

This slows down progress. Instead of going forward, you get stuck on incomprehensible words, get scared, lament, and cannot budge.

Solution

Try to capture the general meaning. Don’t let yourself focus on unfamiliar words. It can always happen that the interlocutor uses a word or expression that has not been encountered before.

They immediately learn to understand whole phrases without focusing on the meaning of individual words.

Mistake 3. Search for «fast and easy» English «in 2 hours»

It is not uncommon to find tempting ads on the Internet that promise you excellent English in record time. This is another example of how not to learn English.

Enjoy the process. It’s not about speed, it’s about quality. Learning English, like any foreign language, can be fun and exciting. Olga Zueva, Head of the Department of English at Foxford’s online home school, recommends linking the study of English with her area of interest to improve the efficiency of the process. For example, with cooking.

«If you love to cook, check out Gordon Ramsay’s or Jamie Oliver’s recipes, keep a cookbook in English, and name them in English when adding ingredients to a salad.»

Mistake 4. Exercise irregularly

All week you could not sit down at textbooks, but on Sunday you pored over them for 4 hours in a row? Didn’t find time for classes for a month, but on the night before the Cambridge exam you decided to master the entire C1 level program? Do not do like this.

The effectiveness of haphazard learning is very low. After four hours of the same activity, concentration and performance decrease.

Solution

Do it systematically. It is better to practice every day for 20 minutes than once a week for 4 hours. You will spend less time in total, but the results will be many times higher. This is how our brains work.

It is helpful to incorporate English into everyday life. For example, you can change the interface language on your phone or arrange English language days to overcome the barriers to speaking. This is what Victoria Deminenko, a seventh-grader, who studies at Foxford’s online home school, does.

«English Days are the days when you fully speak, write and even shoot Instagram Stories in English.»

This practice will add regularity to your interactions with the language.

Mistake 5. Constantly translate into your native language

Many beginners start to create a glossary of unknown words by writing down a foreign word and translating it into their native language. This is the wrong approach to learning English.

You will constantly translate phrases in your head and spend more time finding the correct equivalent. And since there is a whole layer of words for which there are no analogues in the Russian language, sooner or later you will come to a dead end.

Learn to think in English, not translate. It is better to write down the meaning of an unfamiliar expression than to translate it. Knowing the English definition, you will understand what a word means (even if you don’t remember its translation) and will be able to communicate your thoughts faster.

To master English at a high level, you need to learn to think like a native English speaker. To do this, it is necessary to learn not only grammar and other aspects of the language, but also to get acquainted with the culture and mentality of the speakers.

If you want to start thinking in English, use it more and interact with it in real life. When you constantly “stew in the language”, willy-nilly you understand the logic and assimilate the thinking of its speakers.

“At our school, we strive to teach English so that children see it as a living environment, a tool for learning about the world. Therefore, we not only provide a good grammatical and lexical base, but also constantly show how you can use English in life, ”says Irina Ganina, an English teacher with 10 years of experience.

Summary

Learning English is important and necessary. This will help you become a sought-after specialist, broaden your horizons and become an impetus for new acquaintances and travel.

To improve your learning experience, follow our tips. And if you want to study with like-minded people from all over the world, come to Foxford. Here the teachers of English “burn” with their subject and infect students with this love.

Every adult aged 25-35 knows that modern technologies, foreign languages are sometimes easier to teach a three-year-old child than their own parents. Therefore, it is no secret that it is better to start learning foreign languages in the modern world from childhood.

But the form of the game should be basic, otherwise the child may lose interest and will perceive foreign language lessons as something not very pleasant.

Modern English courses for children offer training for both the smallest and teenagers, for example, planning to enroll in a prestigious or foreign university or college.

Yeah, this thread is to talk about what things you like and dislike about school. Even if you hate going to school, there is at least ONE thing you loved or love about high school, college, or junior high.

Secondary Education (High School/Middle School)

PE- I was always pumped to go to gym. I wasn’t exactly the most athletic kid, but I was okay so I never got picked last and I was always able to play with someone of my ability level (for example, guarding someone as tall as me in 5 on 5 basketball. I’m only 5’5″ btw.) I never really understood what was so hard about dressing for PE and how some kids didn’t care that they took F’s.

History- I’ve always kinda been into history, and my brain is like a master database for dates, so I can pull so much shit out of my ass when I need to. My favorite types of history are World War II, and the age of exploration (you know, like chris columbus, magellen, etc.)

Math- I like math mainly because I never find it too challenging. Also, I’m great at memorizing formulas, and for the most part (at least in high school) that’s all you really have to do. A.K.A plug and chug.

Science: I seriously have wanted to puke in every science class I have ever had. I’m not one of those kids that will say, I’m never going need this, because it is important, I just think it is dumb, and I’m no good at it; therefore, I dislike it very much.

English: yes, english is vital but i think all four years in high school and a mandatory 4 semesters in college is over the top. I’m thinking maybe 3 and 3. Honestly, I never have really liked English because I’m pretty lazy and I typically don’t ever want to read. I’m okay at writing papers.

Pretty much the same thing, except now we don’t have PE, but I do have Education classes and I think they are awesome. I think «learning how to teach» is one of the coolest things ever.

Dislikes: well, it’s english and Science again. the only good thing is that im only forced to take 20 credit hours of it (8 science, 12 english).

p.s. I’m really really bad with spelling. that’s another reason I hate English.

what are your likes and dislikes?

I like everything except geography and woodwork. Geography would be okay if it was just learning things by rote, but instead they get you to do silly things like investigate the practical applications of a barometriscope in a Type C suburban slow-build conurbation. And limestone. We had to study limestone.

I am absolutely useless at woodwork and was glad to give it up at 14. I’m currently in Sixth Form studying Double Maths, Physics and Chemistry; all three of them are greatly enjoyable. I had three or four other subjects that I was considering studying, including English (which I might pick up again), History and Music.

I really enjoy languages, but there really isn’t any reason for me to study them during school time — German is probably my favourite ahead of Latin, Spanish and French in that order. Yeah generally I enjoy academic work, particularly maths, and I’m rather disappointed that I could only take four options this year.

1. Science (Biology, Chem, Animal Biology, Etc..)

I am good at it and I have a genuine interest in it. I also have a great teacher and he is also pretty funny (not good enough for stand up but he is still pretty funny). If I continue to excel in the subject and still maintain interest throughout high school then I might become a Veterinarian.

My best subject. I get A’s without really trying. I love writing since I am always so full of ideas.

I like to draw and I am fairly good at it. However, I have 0 patience so I have trouble taking the time to make good drawings. Currently, I am taking comp. graphics to learn how to use some photoshop.

4. History

It is ok for the most part. I have good memory when it comes to history but I find some aspects of it boring. Right now we are learning about the middle ages so I am having a blast.

1. Any second language.

I am intelligent but I just can’t memorize second languages. I just can’t get myself to put in enough effort to learn it. I did have an interest to learn a second language at one point but I just can’t maintain anything I learn.

Just kidding, sort of. I gernerally free thinking classes in which your grade is not based on an arbitrary grading system. Any part of school which enhances one’s creativity and allows for some self expression is alright. High School:
I liked art and math, which I guess is kind of a strange combination to like. Usually artsy people hate math, and those who are mathematically inclined tend to be artistically challenged. I enjoyed art a lot because I like to draw and pretty much do anything crafty, and because I saw the class more as free time and something relaxing than an actual class (even though my art teacher was pretty strict). I liked math because it just clicked easily for me, and the answers in math are always very absolute and objective. And I just like solving math problems, they’re like fun puzzles to me.

College:
I’m a sophomore majoring in industrial and systems engineering, so I haven’t been able to really take many classes beyond the classes required for my major due to the 19 credit hour limit (or a lack of time on my part because the classes I have certainly do a good job of keeping me busy). I still love all of my math courses for the same reasons as above, and I play violin in the symphony and take lessons, which I enjoy very much because it’s now my artistic outlet. I really hated my introductory engineering class last year because it was just so much bullshit and it was like the professor and TAs were just purposely trying to aggravate you so you’d drop out of engineering. And I currently hate physics because my professor’s just pretty inept (the entire physics department is infamous for having bad professors), and statics because it’s just ridiculously hard for me at the moment.

I really enjoy humanities, and also human geography.

I’m not so great at math, particularly geometry, but I already passed that, so whatever. I have yet to see any situation in live where I would need to use matrices; they’re just pointless.

English sucks. Let me rephrase that, IB English sucks. Seriously.

I like science. Last year, biology was fun, and this year chemistry is awesome. I don’t what I’m gonna be for Mole Day though.

Spanish is okay; its never been one of my strong points, but this year my spanish teacher has taught me more about spanish in 5 weeks than last year’s spanish teacher taught me in 36 weeks.

1) Maths, of course. I always remember being the best student in my class as regards maths ever since I stepped in a classroom for the first time when I was, like, 5 years old. And yes, this continued even when I entered University. Even in my Masters, my tutor told me I got the best external examiner mark ever (for my country) out of all Math MSc students!

2) Computer Science. I’ve always liked programming and the way a computer works. I was already programming games when I was 10 years old (on an old ATARI 600XL). Guess I had to make a tough choice between Math and CS in university after my first degree (my first degree is a BSc in both subjects). I don’t regret choosing Math, though. 🙂

History. I appreciate that history repeats itself and that we can learn a lot from what the people before us did, but that’s it. Surely knowing that a certain guy did a certain something on a certain date in a certain place will not make my life any better. The only aspect of history I’m interested in is. the history of mathematics. Call me one-dimensional, but that’s how I am.

1) Math
I used to be good when I was 6-7 but when It comes to learning formulas and formulas, algebric things, I was quite frustrated.

2) Physics
I hate.

3) Chemistry
I was good only when we discussed about Organic Chemistry

When I started taking Journalism classes for my major, I really disliked the very linear, very forced structure of the assignments we were given. However, towards the end of last semester when I took my first Reporting class and this semester, we were given much less guidance on what we should write stories about and only what style/type of article should be produced.

I’ve always liked English and other writing classes, and this is doubly true for my Arts and Letters reporting class; it allows me to hone the reporting and information gathering skills I gathered over the last two semesters but use the same style of more creative and somewhat descriptive writing I prefer using in my personal and fiction writing.

Straight up dislike having a 9:30 stats class for Psych. Ay gestalt.

Freshman in High school:

PE: Always liked this basically because its a great way to releive some extra energy you might have during the school day. I also happen to be an athletically gifted person O_O
Science: Ive always had something of an aptitude for this subject and im also genuinely interested in it.
English: Ive always liked to write (short stories, essays, etc.) and ive always loved reading (ive been told by many of my english teachers that my reading level is WAAAAY above average) and english just lets me build on these two loves.

Math: Its not that im not a smart person, its just that i find most of the stuff that we learned so redundant and useless that I could never find myself to get into it.
History: Nothing special here, just dont give a shit about ancient civilizations lol.

Well I guess thats basically it.

Languages: English and Chinese are both quite enjoyable. French to an extent but I absolutely hate all those tenses and conjugations. I perform ok in English and I’m top in form for Chinese right now =) Self-learning Japanese is fun too. Although I suck at speaking for almost every language, I write considerably better.

Physics: Easy formulas and little to no memorization needed. What more can I ask for?

Chemistry: After going through a year’s worth of work, I realized chem isn’t as hard as I thought it was. The formulas are quite. logical, for the lack of a better word, and I remember those very well.

Philosophy: Debating about ethical and moral issues always interest me, and philosophy provides me with an outlet to voice my sometimes unconventional thinking.

Social Studies: Although the syllabus is nothing to shout about, we got a kickass teacher who tells us awesome stories and shows us awesome videos. Yea I like it.

PE: Our PE modules are quite varied, including swimming, field hockey, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, rock climbing, etc. And everyone generally likes them.

Biology: Memorizing raw data kills me. I can’t for the life of me remember all those enzymes/chemicals/whatever.

Maths: Oh god I hate maths with a passion. Ironically, I can top the class in some chapters and utterly fail others. It’s just. weird. And I don’t like maths. For some reason. I don’t know why.

Edit: Secondary School

Hmm. I used to dislike almost everything, until I decided to approach it differently. So I’ll post my interpretation of common subjects.

Math- low algebra. This is easy stuff, and everyone should know it. Simple as that. Really.
-geometry. This at first glance is asdf useless useless, until you think about it. You aren’t going to use mathematical proofs, unless you go into that for a living. So why learn it? This is the key to a LOT of education: you aren’t learning a certain set of material, you are learning a certain frame of mind. In the case of geometry, you are learning logical thinking and reasoning. Probably a programming course would be just as good for that and also be useful in the real world, but you aren’t going to see the educational establishment changing, ever.
-higher alg and calc. This is getting more abstract. This is getting more into the purer math. Sure, there are a few ties to specific real world cases, but in most respects this is simply a way to exercise your mind and provide a glimpse of the higher mathematical fields.
Science- The sciences are more tied to the real world than math, however they are also more fluid in their implementation due to the pace of technology. They are taught to let you see if you want to do any work in them, basically. So if you have an aptitude, go with it. Most schools require something like Bio I, Chem I, and Physics I, and you can take another year of one if you want.
Social Studies/History/Humanities- In a way this is the most important course of them all. You have two objectives here, two things that you should really leave the course with: first, a detailed knowledge of the history of your country of origin. This is important regardless. Second is the understanding of the forces of history. You need to understand how and why events occur, from political, social, economic, religious, and military points of view. In this sense history can be considered a course in psychology, and in this sense an understanding of history is an understanding of the motivations of humanity.
English- You are studying the great literature of recent times, and often it is the English teacher who is one of the prime supports of the high school student. As such, English is not just syntax and memorization but a study in communication specified in the English language, which is very important.
That’s really it for the important stuff. Just keep in mind that you are learning modes of thought instead of just what’s in the book in front of you, and that should help you out. It helped me, anyway.
