Food & Cooking:

• What kind of food do you like to eat?
I mostly like homemade foods. They are hygienic, made from organic sources and have no chemicals or adhesive. However, my preference in homemade foods does not discourage me to dine outside. I prefer having dinner in a Chinese or Italian restaurant as I love their menu. I am also fond of Pizza and Sandwich.

• What kind of new food would you like to try? Why?
I have never tried Thai foods and I would love to taste it. One of my cousins is very fond of Thai foods and he had convinced me that I should give it a try. I think I would like it. I have a plan to take my family to a renowned restaurant in our city to taste the Thai foods together. Apart from that, I would love to try Japanese Sushi. I have heard so much about it but have never tasted it.

• Do you like cooking? Why/ Why not?
I love cooking. This is sometimes very relaxing and gives a good feeling. I do not need to cook very often but when I do, I feel like I kind of enjoy it. Maybe if I had to cook every day, my opinion could have been different!

My mom mostly cooks in our house and whenever I declare that I would cook either for lunch or dinner, my brothers and sisters become excited and worried at the same time. They love the way I try to cook different menu each time and they often find my cooking tasty but they also remember some of the incidents when my foods tasted horrible. But if you ask me whether I enjoy cooking, I would say ‘yes’, and I like doing experiments no matter what others think about it.

• What was the last meal you cooked?
That must be more than 3 months since I cooked last time. It was fried rice with eggs, prawn and vegetables. I also cooked mutton with curry and as a desert, I made apple pie. Fortunately, this time, my siblings were pleased with my cooking.

• Do you prefer home-cooked food or food from restaurants? Why?
As I said my preference is home-cooked foods over outside foods. My father does not like the idea of having outside meals that often. Apart from that, my mother is an excellent cook and we enjoy her menu a lot. Outside foods are quite expensive and not fully hygienic. This is why all of my family members prefer home-made foods.

• What are some kinds of food you never eat? Why?
Stuffed peppers, pan-fried Scottish scallops served with tomato relish, salmon mollee, Japanese Sushi, popadums, Sour cream and Chive fries and Shrimp cocktails are some of the food items I have never eaten. Most of these items are not common in our city and I have heard about those menus from my friends. Since they are not available in our city and I do not have an extensive travelling experience, I did not get the chance to take them.

• What are some reasons that people eat at a restaurant?
Eating at a restaurant offers people to enjoy the foods as well as the views and surrounding. They do not need to cook and foods are usually delicious. People are treated well in a restaurant and people love that a lot. We can invite as many people as we want in a restaurant and we do not need to clean anything unlike eating at home. There are a variety of menus to choose from and people can enjoy exotic foods at a restaurant that are not usually cooked at home. We can meet friends and other relatives at a restaurant and enjoy our conversation without interruption. I think those are the main reasons we like to eat out in a restaurant even though we have to pay a large amount of money for the foods we eat.

• Describe a popular food in your country? Why do people like this food?
Pizza is most probably one of the most popular food items in my county. This was not on the list of popular food items probably 10 years back, but the popularity of pizza, especially, among young people is unbelievable nowadays.

The popularity is probably because of its taste and easy availability. Every corner of a street has a fast food shop in my town and they sell pizza. Craze among young generation about the fast food items, especially pizza, is another reason it is so popular in my country.

Tradition &Custom:

• When do people give gifts or presents in your country?
Though gifts are exchanged round the year, the prevalence is seen more during the religious festivals in India like Puja, Eid or Christmas Day. Besides, there are some other days and events to give presents. Sometimes gifts are also given on private occasions to celebrate an anniversary or a special day.

• Do you ever take a gift when you visit someone in their home? Why? Why not?
Yes, I always take some sort of gifts when I go visiting someone. I, in fact, feel uncomfortable if I have nothing to offer the host while visiting them. If the host is an adult, then I prefer to take dry foods or fruits or if they have any kid at home, I prefer small toys, chocolates etc.

• When did you last receive a gift? What was it?
I received the last gift in January of 2016 (on my birthday). It was an iPhone belonging to the latest model (iPhone 6+). My parents gave me the gift.

• Do you enjoy looking for gifts for people? Why? Why not?
Yes. I really enjoy looking gifts for others. I actually plan for the gifts and always look for them. When I find the sought items, I get them and make a pleasant surprise for the people it was intended.

• Has it changed very much since you first went there? In what way?
Yes, the place has changed greatly since my first visit. Earlier, the beach was less crowded as it was located in a corner but with the modernization, the number of tourists has increased and thus it remains crowded always even at the night time. Apart from that, the transportation facility has improved and the number of resorts and tourists’ activities has also increased significantly.

No, a few years back I owned a private motorbike and used the bike all the time to reach my office. Nowadays my choice of transportation to reach office actually depends on my mood and urgency to work. On regular working days, if there are no unusual workloads, I ride a bus. But if it is a hefty working day and I need to reach office before the usual hour, I ride the bike to save time.

• What do you like about travelling to work/college this way?
The bus is economical and maintains a schedule. Being on a bus gives me time to read, listen to music and enjoy the side views. These are the great things I enjoy about riding a bus.

When I am on my motorbike, I can reach office early and do not need to wait for the buses in the waiting line. Moreover, I can reach using several routes whereas a bus cannot avoid its preset directions.

• What changes would improve the way you travel to work/college? Why?
I think the number of buses should be increased and the traffic system should be made more efficient with the use of technology. In some of the streets and intersection, the traffic police members control the traffic manually and it should be developed or replaced with electronic systems like the western countries. This would be a great way to reduce the traffic jam and would make the journey more enjoyable.

• What are some benefits of travelling? Why?
There are a large number of benefits of travelling including it widen your knowledge and helps to get familiar with the unknown. Travelling makes your knowledge practical and you can compare the bookish knowledge and the real-life issues. The experience we get from travelling is helpful in our life and this is an excellent way of learning about diverse cultures, people and their customs. Finally, travelling also helps reduce our stress and refresh us.

Travelling is a part of my life and I frequently travel from place to place. But some of the travels are of short distance while some others are long. Usually, I go for a long trip several times in a year.

Usually, the natural beauties are eye soothing and wear a great look at night times. Historical places are in the second preference for visiting.

• What is the first thing you will do when you arrive at the new place?
It’s an important question. At first, I will check in a comfortable hotel or motel and then collect a local map and get familiar with the local street networks so that I don’t get lost in the area when I’m out.

• Do you like to travel alone or with your friends?
I like travelling with friends. Travelling with friends is advantageous and the fun and excitements are acuter than travelling alone.

• Why do so many people like travelling nowadays?
Due to the mechanised nature of the living styles, people easily get bored. The seek ways to get relief and travelling is one of the best ways for relaxation. Apart from that digital media let people know about the places they should visit. Finally, the cheap and easy air flights attract more people to visit new places.

• How can you make sure you get the most from your travels?
When I go for a travel, I try visiting all the available places on the spot. I like to eat the traditional foods from the adjacent eateries, get some local collectables or souvenirs, take snaps of notable places and relics, and participate in special activities. Thus I make sure that I get the most from the travel.

Clothes:

• How important are clothes and fashion to you?
I’m not that much worried about clothing or fashion. I believe that clothing gives a decent look and make people presentable before all. Comfort is my first priority while choosing my costume.

• What kind of clothes do you dislike? Why?
I dislike clothes which are too stunning and made with the use of eye-irritating colours. I like simple but attractive clothes which will make me look good and nice. I believe the colourful clothes do not make me look nice rather makes me look strange. Besides, I dislike unfit clothes as well.

• How different are the clothes you wear now from those you wore 10 years ago?
Well, there are not too many differences. People now prefer shorter clothes while the length was a bit more 10 years ago. The fashion has also been influenced by the western themes which were absent in that past. For me, I used to wear casual dresses mostly- a pair of jeans, a pair of shoes and T-shirts were my most common dresses but these days I prefer to wear more formal dresses.

• What do you think the clothes we wear say about us?
Yes, clothes say a lot about us. When we are in worn out attires, usually people won’t look at us or pay the right attention, while they will adore us unexpectedly when we are in a stunning suit. So, I firmly believe that clothes say many things in our favour. The type of dresses someone wears gives hints about his social, economic, and job status. The colour preferences and style in dresses also reflects someone’s lifestyle and personality.

Music & Dancing:

• Do you like music? Why?
Yes, I love music. There are several reasons behind my preference on music. The first and most important factor is that music helps me to get relaxed. It has some entertaining value as well. It is like a food for my mind and relieves me of stress and tension. The rich lyrics of many songs often inspire me.

Yes, I love dancing. I love the movements made with the tones and lights, the dancers bring a massive change in their limbs which appears amazing to me. I know very little about dancing and if someone asks me to dance, I might decline. However, I really love the way other people dance. It is said that dancing is an exercise for our souls and it unifies the concentration and gives spiritual inspiration.

• Has anyone ever taught you to dance? Why? Why not?
Uhh, actually, I am not that much interested in learning dancing. Though my parents wanted me to learn and practice dancing, I rejected their offer and thus nobody taught me ever to dance. I was more interested in sports like football and cricket than learning to dance.

• Tell me about any traditional dancing in your country.
Well, emerged during the Spanish colonial period, the Philippines take humble pride in Tinkling. This is a traditional dance performed with bamboo poles.

• Do you think that traditional dancing will be popular in the future? Why? Why not?
The traditional dancing has potentials to grow in future as the dance takes place during different cultural events while the number of such events is on the rise. However, the influences of western and modern dancing might reduce the popularity of traditional dancing in future in our country.

IELTS Speaking Sample 20

IELTS Speaking Mock Test # 20

Part 1- Introduction & Interview:

Q. What kinds of food do you enjoy eating?
A. I mostly like to eat homemade food that includes rice, fish, bread, vegetables, curry, sweetmeats, noodles, salads and cheese. Among restaurant and street food, I love to eat pizza, sandwiches, hamburger, fish, fish taco, french fries, and of course, different types of ice-creams.

Q. What are some kinds of food you never eat? [Why?]
A. I have tried a few food items and dishes once or twice and then never tried them again since I did not like them at all. Food items that are on my «not-preferable-list» are bread rolls, banana pudding, kachumbari, chicken bog and steak and kidney pie. In fact, I did not like the taste of these items when I first tried them. Ever since those items are on my dislike list and I never order or prepare them.

Q. Do you generally prefer to eat at home or at a restaurant? [Why?]
A. I usually prefer homemade food. My mother is an excellent cook and I am concerned about the food quality of the dishes we eat outside. A modest meal in a quality restaurant is also very expensive in my city. For all these reasons I mostly prefer to eat home-made food. But this does not mean that I dislike enjoying a delicious dish in a restaurant once in a while with my family or friends.

Q. What are some reasons that people eat at restaurants?
A. A diverse menu choice, fondness of exotic food and access to ready-made food are the main reasons people eat at a restaurant. Eating at a restaurant offers a better environment, opportunity to meet people and to taste food that is not usually cooked at home. Many people also eat at a restaurant to celebrate different events and to meet friends and relatives there. Finally, some people do not like to waste time cooking at home and love to eat outside which they opine suits their daily work schedule.

Q. Describe a popular food in your country? Why do people like this food?
A. Soup is a very popular food item in my country. In fact, we have a rich tradition of preparing and serving a variety of soups to our guests. It is easy to find ingredients for soups, it takes less time to prepare it and we can bring a variety of aroma and taste in it, not to mention the health benefits of soups, and that’s why it is so popular in my country. For us, a good meal is incomplete without some sort of soup item in it.

Topic:

Describe a teacher from the past whom you remember.

and explain why still you remember this teacher.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Q. What kind of person, in your opinion, makes a good teacher?
Answer: First of all, a person who has a passion for teaching others would naturally become a good teacher. I believe it is applicable for any profession as «passion» is a great determining factor for someone’s performance and progress in a job. Moreover, sound knowledge on topics, patience, rhetoric power, ability to convince and argue, interaction quality and good behaviours are some key points to become a good teacher as well. I have always thought and still think that a good teacher inspires pupils and set examples for them. Finally, a person with compassion and the ability to understand others’ psychology often excels as a good teacher.

Alternative Answer: «Teaching» certainly is one of the most difficult jobs today as it requires not only a broad knowledge of the subject matter, curriculum and their standards but also great enthusiasm and love for learning and teaching. Anyway, to become a good teacher, a person should be prepared and organized in order to provide a clearly-written out objectives for teaching. He or she should also be able to set a high expectation for all students and then engage them accordingly in order to get the best out of them. Finally, he or she not only have great relationships with the students but also communicate with their parents whenever the situation demands.

Q. Why some people choose to become teachers?
Answer: For some people, becoming a teacher is a dream and they like the idea of teaching young students so that they can learn and progress. For others, it is just a job and they are teachers because they have not been able to land in any other profession. Yet for some passionate people, teaching is a noble profession and they never leave this profession even they are offered jobs with better salary package and facilities. In many societies, people honour and respect those who are in the teaching profession and that is why many people choose to become teachers.

Alternative Answer: In my humble opinion, people choose to become teachers for several reasons. The first reason could be that they really love to engage themselves with other people on an intellectual level and thus being able to teach them about some life-changing lessons in the process. The second reason could be that some teachers in the past may really have influenced them to love the profession in order to make a difference in the lives of other people from their childhood. Finally, some people choose to become teachers also because they are probably really very passionate about a particular subject and the only way they can improve their learning is by teaching.

Q. Do you think the education process will change in the future? How?
Answer: Though the core value and objective of education, which is to enlighten people, will always remain the same, the process and system of education change over time. In the future technology would be greatly used to teach, learn and assess students in educational institutes and distance learning would be very popular among students. More subjects would be introduced and more technical and technological subjects would emerge. Practical experience in studies would be given more priority in the future without a doubt. Besides, the traditional classroom-based education would be replaced in some places with the computer and the internet-based education system and more students would pursue their education from foreign universities and colleges than they do now.

Alternative Answer: In future, more and more students will be able to attend their lessons in different places at different times without necessarily being present in a traditional setting of class. Besides, many students would also have the opportunities to use and depend on different kinds of study tools according to their own learning capabilities. Finally, in future, education would be more case/project-based which would allow them to learn more of a practical set of skills and experience so that they are able to know what to do in a certain kind of job situation.

Q. How does technology affect education?
Answer: Technology has already been adopted in many educational institutes as it makes the process of learning and teaching easier and more convenient. Technology will replace some traditional teaching methods and make online classes and online assessments more popular, I believe. Students can access a vast amount of information related to their subjects through the internet and can read e-books which help them learn and do better in their exams.

The required time to teach in a classroom or to conduct an exam has greatly been reduced and teachers now connect to their students via the internet. Online courses, online teaching, online registration and certification have changed the way people used to study in the past. In my opinion, technology offers huge flexibility and advancements in education and we have already started reaping these benefits.

Alternative Answer: Technology has significantly affected education in recent years. To start with, with the help of technology, most the teachers and student today are able to do their research works and have access to important data/information much easily and quickly no matter where they live. Besides, with the help of technology, both students and teachers are able to collaborate and co-operate among each other even if they live a world apart. Finally, technology has also made learning more efficient, personalized and fun with the help of different kinds of learning software and tools.

Alternative Answer: I honestly believe that both the parents and teachers should be responsible for teaching manners and good behaviours to young children primarily because both parties spend a significant amount of time with young children. While parents can’t really ignore what their children do and how they behave at homes because they are the children’s legal guardians, teachers are also responsible to make sure that their students are learning proper manner and behaviours because students do look upon the teachers for guidance. Finally, both teachers and parents should also communicate with each other because only then, the children will understand the importance and seriousness of learning proper behaviour.

Q. What modern techniques should teachers adopt to make the teaching more fun and intuitive, especially for children?
Answer: Ahhh… Everything is changing in this modern era and similarly, the traditional teaching method has lost its appeal to a great extent to students and to many teachers as well. Hence, educators should focus on some other aspects to make teaching more fun for children. Replacing the textbooks with multimedia slides may be an interesting way. Addition of graphical images or audio-visual representation of some topics or information may provide some better results in teaching. Adopting some recreational activities during class hours may also have some good results. This way young students will not feel bored and will become more interested in the classroom, I believe.

Alternative Answer: In order to make the teaching environment more fun and intuitive, teachers first should learn about all the interesting modern technological tools (like different kinds of “learning apps” and “computer software”) and integrate them smartly within the existing learning environment. Then, teachers should also allow the students to become flexible in discussing and collaborating with their fellow students so that the students feel encouraged to become “creative” without the help of their teachers. Finally, among other techniques, teachers should teach multiple subjects simultaneously so that students can actually dive deeper into learning different concepts and skills easily.

What do you like kind of food do you like

Maria: Rory, you know, they have a saying that you are what you eat. So can you actually say that if you are what you eat, you are fast, cheap and easy?

Rory: Well, I’m not fast, cheap and easy. I’m expensive and high in protein, probably.

Rory: And slow, yes.

Maria: Are you a foodie?

Rory: No, I’m not a foodie. I can eat just about anything. So it’s not a big deal for me.

Maria: Is food important to you?

Rory: Yes. If you don’t eat, then you die! It’s not so important in terms of the quality because I can eat just about anything. But it’s definitely important just because eating, well, you need to eat to live, basically.

Maria: What kinds of food do you particularly like to eat?

Rory: I quite like to eat things which are moderately healthy. I suppose if anything stands out in particular about my diet is probably the fact that a lot of things are high in protein. Just because I’m lifting a lot of weights right now and it helps you manage your appetite better.

Maria: What kinds of foods are most popular in your country?

Rory: I’m not really sure. I think a lot of people like things which are high in fat and carbohydrates. I think this is kind of like a leftover from when people had more active lifestyles. But now, especially in Western countries like Scotland, for example, people have more sedentary lifestyles. So they’re not moving around as much. And that’s probably not so healthy, but it is what they like to eat.

Maria: How different is food in your country today from when you were younger?

Rory: I think there seem to be two opinions regarding this. I am of the opinion that it’s not actually changed that much. I think people are still eating the same things, but it’s the fact that they’re not moving around as much, that makes it so unhealthy. But I think the other more popular opinion is that people are eating more fast food, for example, more junk food, more processed food. And that is contributing to very unhealthy diets. So that’s a big change that’s been highlighted by that opinion.

Maria: Yeah, and in your country, do people have to finish all the foods on their plates? You know, like even if you don’t like it, you kind of feel you have to finish everything.

Rory: I don’t think it’s one of these things which is socially enforced. But I think a lot of people don’t eat the right kind of food and therefore they’re always hungry. So they just finish everything because they’re so hungry and they don’t know when to stop or how to regulate how hungry they are.

Maria: What about you? Do you always finish everything?

Rory: I always finish what I eat. But then that’s because what I eat is always quite tasty. And I know I’m working towards certain weight goals and things like this.

Maria: But if you don’t like the food, will you finish it anyway?

Rory: Well, like I say, I can eat just about anything. So there are very few foods that I can’t eat.

Maria: No, can you eat a cockroach or some fried bug or a butterfly. Can you eat a butterfly?

Rory: I’ve eaten bugs before. I’ve not eaten a butterfly before. I don’t think you’d get a lot over eating a butterfly.

Maria: Yeah, but you can say “I can eat anything” so can you eat a bird?

Rory: Yeah, I eat chicken.

Maria: Oh yeah, chicken is a bird, right Maria? Yes? Now I know. Okay. Which foods do you dislike?

Rory: There’s only two kinds of food I really dislike and that is raisins and bananas. I absolutely cannot stand either of them.

Maria: Are you joking? Bananas?

Rory: No, I’m not. I absolutely hate bananas, which is weird because I know a lot of people like bananas. But the reason that I don’t like raisins or bananas, to be honest with you, is because of the texture. It’s like the way they feel when I’m eating them. I don’t know what it is, but it’s just something that makes. It gives me the heave. I don’t like it at all.

Maria: So avocados are fine. Bananas are not fine?

Rory: Avocados are fine, bananas are not for me.

Maria: Okay, what about banana bread or banana ice cream, gelato?

Rory: That’s just about OK for me. But I honestly really struggle with it. It’s also the smell actually now that I come to think about it. You just got this aroma that puts me off eating them. I don’t know what it is.

Maria: What foods do people in your country buy at the market?

Rory: I think you can buy just about anything at the market these days? I suppose if you’re lucky enough to live in a place that’s got a farmer’s market, then seasonal foods or seasonal produce, I should say. So like strawberries in the summer, but then more hearty vegetables and fruits in the winter months, for example. But you also get more exotic fruits at markets now, just because of things like refrigeration and improvements to food transportation.

Maria: How many meals a day do you have?

Rory: Right now I have three main ones. So I have breakfast, lunch and dinner. But when I’m alone, I probably only have two. One of them is brunch and one of them is dinner. It’s not terribly exciting, unfortunately, but I definitely get my three square meals a day just now.

Maria: Rory, they say that you should eat to live, not live to eat. What about you?

Rory: Oh, it’s a very philosophical question.

Maria: I live to eat, basically.

Rory: No, I suppose, since I’m on a bit of a health kick right now, I probably eat to live and I’m not getting very fat, so I don’t live to eat.

Maria: We are so different… What about junk food?

Rory: Oh, very rarely. I don’t eat junk food very often at all. I can eat burgers, but usually that will be at restaurant and I don’t know if that counts as junk food, if that’s at a high quality restaurant, for example.

IELTS Speaking Test # 101

Part 1 Topic: ‘Food and cooking’.
Part 2 Topic: ‘Describe a house/apartment that someone you know lives in’.
Part 3 Topic: ‘Different types of home’ & ‘Finding a place to live’.

[This part of the test begins with the examiner introducing himself or herself and checking the candidate’s identification. It then continues as an interview. In the interview, the examiner asks the candidate about his/her home, work or studies and other familiar topics.]

Topic: Food and cooking:

Q. What sorts of food do you like eating most? [Why?]
A. I mostly like to eat traditional food and anything that is healthy. From this regard, I prefer homemade food over fast food items. Some of my favourite food items are dates, fruits, fish, Kabsa, Maqluba, Shuwaa, vegetables and Khabees.

Homemade food, our traditional food, fish, vegetables and fruits that I prefer are far better than the street food and fast food in terms of their food value and nutritional aspects. I believe eating habit takes time to grow and for a long, I have tried to follow a good diet.

Q. Who normally does the cooking in your home? [Why/Why not?]
A. Well, my mother is in charge to prepare food and look after the menu. We have a housemaid who helps my mother in that. Sometimes my elder sister assists my mom in cooking but this is a very rare occasion as she is quite busy with her studies.

Q. Do you watch cookery programmes on TV? [Why/Why not?]
A. Cooking is not my passion and I rarely try to cook in real-life. However, watching cookery programmes on TV is very interesting, at least to me. I often watch cookery TV shows like Baking With Julia, Daisy Cooks!, MasterChef, and World Class Cuisine and like the way they present new menus and their excellent way of cooking. They have taken cooking into the next level and it seems like cooking is an art whenever I watch such a programme.

Q. In general, do you prefer eating out or eating at home? [Why?]
A. I usually avoid eating outside and prefer to eat homemade food. Homemade food items have better taste, superior food values and I enjoy my dinner with my family members more than eating in a restaurant or a bistro. Furthermore, restaurant foods are quite expensive in my country.

[The topic for your talk will be written on a card which the examiner will hand you. Read it carefully and then make some brief notes.]

Describe a house/apartment that someone you know lives in.

[Examiner: All right? Remember you have one to two minutes for this, so don’t worry if I stop you. I’ll tell you when the time is up. Can you start speaking now, please?]

Discussion topics Different types of home:

Q. What kinds of home are most popular in your country? Why is this?
A. In urban areas, high-rising buildings are the most common accommodation type for people in my country. Even though many of them like an independent two-storied bungalow, this is not affordable for all. Only rich people have such houses.

The villages have mud houses, and tent houses which look quite different and have a great traditional value in my country. With the modernisation and increasing population, the traditional houses are being replaced by high-rising modern buildings.

Q. What do you think are the advantages of living in a house rather than an apartment?
A. Houses are usually capacious, have spaces in front of it and offer better views than the apartments. A house owner can design the house the way he/she likes, expand it and can change the architect on his/her wish. Moreover, a homeowner enjoys great freedom and have access to fresh air and enough sunlight that the apartment dwellers often miss.

Q. Do you think that everyone would like to live in a larger home? Why is that?
A. I believe so. If people have had a choice, almost everyone would love to live in a large house rather than an apartment.

An apartment is a minimum arrangement for a family to have some rooms to live in. It does not offer open space, facilities to have gardens, flower plants and yard. The homeowners, on the contrary, can enjoy these facilities and have greater freedom which is unimaginable in an apartment.

Finding a place to live:

Q. How easy is it to find a place to live in your country?
A. Well, it is moderately easier in a small town but quite difficult in a large city. Big cities are already struggling to accommodate a large number of population and proper housing is a problem for many. If someone does not have a large sum of money to spend on his accommodation per month, he will surely find it hard to arrange a nice place to live in.

Q. Do you think it’s better to rent or to buy a place to live in? Why?
A. I think owning a house is far better than renting one. However, this varies from person to person and if the person wants to permanently settle in a place, he/she should think about purchasing a place rather than renting one. However, for a brief staying, renting is a better option in my opinion.

Q. Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their parents? Why is that?
A. I do not think that someone should ever leave his/her parents permanently, at least I would never do that. However, it is quite logical that someone needs to leave his/her house for better education and job opportunities but this does not mean that someone has to decide it at a certain age.

But, if someone decides that he has lived with his parents for a long period of time and now the time has come for him to start living with his fiance or friends, that would be a different case. In my country, a boy or a girl leaves the house for higher studies and reunite with the family after she/he has a job.

When you asked someone about «what food» they like, you refer to the object itself. But «what kind of food» usually refers to «kind of dish» or type of cuisine, for example Chinese cuisine, Western cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, etc.

In general native speakers ask «What kind of food do you like?» the most as it is much more open than «what food».
The same goes with other categories such as sports, music, and so on.
«What kind of dishes» sounds unnatural and slightly pretentious as well so I suggest you avoid that phrase.
