What Do You Think Of Russia And Russian Ppl?

When I read this topic the some questions appear in my mind. I’ve heard many unpleasant remarks about my country and the Russian. I’m really interested in it.

Are there Russian people on this Forum? What other people think about the Russian?

To be honest, I do not like Russians.
I have met some russian people and most of them were kind of mean. They care only about themselves and judge others before they know them. Oh, and they prise their language as it is the most glorious and most important language in the world. They all about «me, me».

Other then that, they are nice and friendly:)

By the way, I still keep in touch with few of them.

Well previously I dint even care that Russia exists but now as I am working on a project on it, I have come to know that Russia is a unique country with its awesome architecture, culture, people and has a great scope of tourism. People should try to explore Russia more and choose it for a good travel as it has better things to offer than other countries which are usually travelled by people. I guess there is a universal characters of nations in the world. Well it is conditional but interesting and funny.

They are smart mostly. I suppose as a national heritage they are not «virgin», because throughout history was occupied by and then himself occupied other nations and a lot cross-bloods, cultural interchanges and exchanges had happened.

What do you think about russia

I’m an American who speaks fluent Russian, who lived in Moscow for four years, is married to a Russian woman. I’ve devoted more than ten years of my life to studying the language, history, working in the country, etc.

Needless to say, my attitudes to Russia are quite complex.

Only an ignorant person would view Russians as uneducated vodka drinkers. Russians are some of the smartest people I have ever met. Unfortunately, the system there is such that intelligence and honest behavior is rarely rewarded. I know that’s the case in a lot of places, including the United States, but in Russia it seems especially bad.

I wish I had the time to answer your post at length, but I’ll describe my relationship with Russia as being one of love-hate.

15 years of Russian study, Ukrainian wife, but no long working periods in Russia or Ukraine.

I have worked mostly with people at nuclear institutes, highly intellegent and educated people.

It’s a false. The Polish officers were killed by Germans Nazis. They needed to sow fear among the population of Europe before Russian, and they, unfortunately, have achieved it.

In the Red Army there were a lot of Polish by nationality. Marshall Rokossovsky K. for example and many others

But not about it I would like to talk. What it would be interesting to learn to the American about Russia and Russians? About displays of what name a «mysterious Russian soul»?

I was born in Poland, grew up here in the US. My mother had an intense hatred for Russians and demonized em so much that the effect it had on me was to make me more sympathetic and open. Russians aren’t bad people, they aren’t stupid or evil or anything like that. Normal, basically good, intelligent people, like anywhere else.

I know there’s alotta bad history but history is more complicated than people think, and anyway, you can’t blame people today for mistakes made in the past before they were even born. My dad told me plenty of stories about growing up under communist rule, I know alotta bad stuff happened, and there were alotta bad people, but I don’t let that turn me against a whole people like my mother was.

Here in America, there aren’t that many Poles compared to other groups, and me and other people I knew, and even my mom had a kinda «countrymen» type feeling towards the Russians. Like, we’re part of a similar culture with a shared history.

But, I have to say «It’s all false. The Polish officers were killed by Germans Nazis» I’m sorry that’s just not true. It was proven after the war. People do forget things like the Russians and Poles did fight together, like, in Berlin the only other nation that was there was a Polish army attached to the Russians fighting with them. They even got their flag up too. But, you can’t just push something like Katyn aside. Everyone should forgive and forget, look to the future, but that can’t happen if we don’t acknowledge the past.

As a Pole I’ll be the first to say we weren’t always the innocent victim either. Poland acted very aggressively towards Russia more than once throughout our very long history together. We need to work through all that stuff, the endless hate leads nowhere.

(Sorry to say so much, I guess it’s an issue close to my heart)

What do you think about Russia? (Part 1)

Wiki:

CouchSurfing is a hospitality exchange network and website. With almost 2.7 million members in 246 countries and territories, CouchSurfing has an Alexa Traffic Rank of about 2,500.

Etymology
Couchsurfing is a neologism referring to the practice of moving from one friend’s house to another, sleeping in whatever spare space is available, floor or couch, generally staying a few days before moving on to the next house.

Hi Everyone! Tell us what you think about Russia.
If you have never been in Russia tell us what you think about our country.
If you’ve already been to Russia or live here for a while, tell us what you like or dislike here. What did you surprise? What did you confirm? Tell us what places you were and what you saw there.
What do you think about our people, politics, business, culture, roads, prospects etc.

i start learning russian, ican say its really hard language :))
havent been there.but ım planıng to visit on september..

I think that CS-members are more advanced because you travel more, so you more know, more experienced than others. You have something to compare, and your comments will be more objective.
I think It would be interesting to translate it and tell other people about it.
It would be nice if your comments were in English, but not necessarily, I can translate from another language.

In good things, #1 is of course Russian girls. (which can be bad sometimes :P) Ok I dont mean prostitution, you are simply very beautiful (respect!) And there are too many of you in everywhere. I felt like I was in a woman republic in my first weeks in Russia. And when I met Russian friends there I saw that it is not only beauty, conversation and mentality was also very deep and clever.

#2 is the parks, Russia is such a big country and I love your parks, Park Pobedi in Moscow, VDNH, Petergof in SPb are my favourites. They are so peaceful and wide that I can rest my mind anytime I want, and they are the best places to do anything especially in summer

#3 is nightlife which is mainly effected by #1 🙂 But well it is not only about the girls but the music (esp. if you like house and elec. mix) and the shows in clubs are fascinating.

#4 is business, if you have a good and profitable idea, I think everyone should try in Russia, especially in Moscow.

#5 is vodka 🙂 Cheapest and the best drink of Russia. A bottle of Stolichnaya is cheaper than a medium coffee in Starbucks which felt almost like in heaven 🙂 I had several experiments with Jaguar too (which we used to call the student drink btw friends) :))

#6 is literature, reading Dostoyewski in SPb, Peterhof, reading tales of Cehov in trains or reading Gorki in Nizhniy Novgorod was a unique experience, made me understand the society and roots of Russia once more.

Weather is the biggest problem, I don’t mean that snow is bad, I like Russian winter and winter sports too but living without sun the whole day was really depressing.

Food was another problem for me, well it can be my problem while I was grown up next to the sea in a Mediterranean city called Izmir with fresh vegetables, fish, olive and nice kebabs 🙂

Ok I should add girls to this category too while I fell in love with the wrong girl for a while 😛

And for me, there were 2 big surprises in Russia, one is the police that coming and asking for documents to take money. Ok there is bribery in Turkey too but here you should do something wrong at least )) But in Russia it was surprising that while you are walking in the street or driving your car, a police can come and ask you stupid questions and take your time just to take some rubles.

Second suprising was that, if you have a car, you are a taxi driver in Russia 🙂 negotiating with «Dziguli»s and seeing that after club 4 a.m in the morning girls with sexy dresses are getting into cars which they don’t know the driver was strange. This pure trust between people was amazing. I recommend you not to try this in Turkey 🙂

I hope these answers were useful a little bit, I am curious about other people’s thoughts. Thanks for the topic Ludmila 🙂

Hello Ludmila,
First of all, thanks for including me in this discussion! I’m back in France for now almost a month and I already miss my CIS countries.
At first, (if I remember well, it was 3 years ago) Russia was both for me a myth and sthg I was scared about. Although the day before I left for Moscow I met two Russian girls in Montmartre and when I told them my plans they told me I would die! It didn’t reassure me.

So, I flew off and lost myself in the big Moscow, by any chance Ludmila found me and there, with her footprints and my awful russian I started to discover one of the most interesting country I’ve ever visited.

I know many won’t agree but when I’m asked about Russia, I like to speak about the whole Russian speaking region, so I generally include the former SR which now form the CIS; for them once to be part of this magnificent country and for them to be neighbor country.
And what I like the most in this region is the diversity, the honesty and the simplicity of its people.
Cheers

Hello Remy!
Remy made a long journey in the permafrost regions close Yakutsk, where there is no railway even, and in the off-season roads become virtually impassable. Usually people fly to Yakutsk, but Remy, a real, character-traveler, take advantage of our ground transportation and traveled across the country from west to east and then to north.

well I have been in Russia, several times, but for business purpose and for short times. I just felt that I am so comfortable. Yes there are many cons. But pros are much much more.
People are incredible, even tough ones. If you can find a way to communicate you can discover that.
One interesting thing. Russians trust to their potential and also Russia’s potential ( as country, politics, people etc. ) is very low. I think they want to see something robust, clear things like economical, political or environmental.

To do business was pleasure with RUSSIANS. When you hand shake, it was enough. I think still same, in most western countries you must sign strict agreements. To promise still valid in Russia.
Even told many things, I agree with him also with Remy. Now I am trying to learn Russian ( Really difficult, I think most difficult part of Russia :))))))) And soon I want to restart my visits. Maybe I can have home in Russia.

Wow. I think that Alessio described Russia so exactly!

olga so do you agree with him? :))

i will be going to russia for the first time in may, and i have high expectations. i have met, and i am friends with many russians or soviet born people in the US, and my grandfather was in the soviet army during WWII. i have a lot of respect for the russian people, and the culture.
but i dont agree with most of the criticism that alessio wrote. many of those are the same criticisms that americans hear from western europe too.

— some things, such as «rampant nationalism» is phrased to be a criticism, but i think patriotism is a good thing. a culture and a people survive only if people are proud of it, and defend it, and promote its strengths, and of course fix its problems too, or else you cease to be a society, in the long term. western europe has a major cultural crisis with millions of people from other very different cultures moving in, and diluting and weakening cultures that have been built over hundreds of years, instead of strengthening them. same thing is happening in parts of the USA. maybe some other countries could learn from russia.
