Actually I don’t do anything special to stay healthy during the Russian winters. I just try to dress warmer and spend less time outside. A healthy lifestyle for me includes doing sport at least twice a week and avoiding unhealthy food. If I fall ill I usually ask my friends for help to catch up with the missing material.

It’s great that your cousin is going to visit you for Thanksgiving. How old is she? Where does your cousin live? What do you usually do together?

What do you like to do during your winter holidays?

Ответ: As I try to keep fit, I like skiing very much. My friends and I go skiing almost every day during our winter holidays. But if the weather is too frosty, we go to the gym and work out properly.

Ответ: As I have just mentioned above, my family and I travel every summer. So, we travel once a year without fail. We like to travel both abroad and within this country. It depends on money, you know.

Ответ: Frankly speaking, I am not an expert in Sochi’s history. My city has a long history, I guess. But, I know for sure that it was founded in 1896.

It seems to me that summer is the best season for visiting Saint-Petersburg because there are many discounts for tourists.

Ответ: I thing that summer is the best time for visiting my city. There are some reasons for that. First of all, it’s very warm here in summer. You can swim in the sea, sunbathe, take long walks and enjoy beautiful buildings and nature.

Russian museum is my favorite place in Saint-Petersburg.

I would like to live in a big city because I believe that you have more career opportunities there.

Ответ: I would like to live in a big city. The main reason is that a big city has much more opportunities for personal development and making a succesful career. So, as for me, living in the country is out of the question.

What are the advantages of living in the country?

Firstly, atmosphere in country is calm and peaceful; secondly, there are no strangers because all people are familiar with each other.

Ответ: It goes without saying, that environment is much better in the country than in a big city. The air is fresher and the water is cleaner. So, these are definite advantages of living in the country.

The main ecological problem is air pollution caused by factories and cars.

Ответ: There is a number of ecological problems in my city, but I think the main problem is polluted sea. That’s way it is not advisable that you swim or take drinking water here

In fact, we ignore ecological problems because we believe that there is nothing that we can do to prevent it.

Ответ: Yes, we care about ecological problems very much. For example, we take an active part in the cleaning of the streets. We do it, because we want our city to change for the better. Besides, we make junior schoolchildren get concerned with environmental problems.

I have never taken part in ecological projects but I certainly would like to do it in the future.

Ответ: Yes. I have. We cleaned out the sea and collected rubbish near our school. Our school has a special program on environmental protection, and we turn it into practical deeds.

What would you recommend to a person who wants to improve the ecological situation in his or her hometown?

It seems to me that the most effective solution is to ask Government for help.

Ответ: There is so much this person can do. But to begin with, I would recommend to start with his or her home. He or she shouldn’t throw litter away and overuse electricity. Then, he or she should take an active part in the cleaning of the streets.

What do kids in Russia do every day? Is their life exciting?
Spotlight on Russia talks to Marina Smirnova − a 12 −year−old student from St Petersburg.
Hi, my name is Marina Smirnova. I’m 12 years old and I live in the beautiful town of St Petersburg. My daily routine is typical of most students my age.
I get up at 7 : 00 am and after a quick breakfast I walk to school. School starts at 8 : 00 am and finishes at 2 : 00 pm from Monday to Friday. There are 30 students in my class and every day we have 6 − 7 lessons. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes with a 10 −minute break in between. My favourite lessons are history and maths. They are both very interesting. We have lunch in the school canteen during the longer break in the afternoon. We have many exciting things to do at school after classes. On Tuesday and Thursday I have guitar lessons.
After school I go home and eat a snack before I start on my homework. We always have lots of homework to do and it usually takes me 2 − 3 hours to finish it. Around 6 o’clock in the evening, I have dinner with my family. I enjoy this time because on weekdays it’s the only chance we have to relax and be together as a family.
After dinner, I usually watch TV. I like watching Sports and Music shows. Sometimes I play a game of chess with my father. Most nights I go to bed at 10 : 30 pm and read for a while before I go to sleep.

Я встаю в 7 утра и после быстрого завтрака иду в школу. Школа начинается в 8 : 00 утра и заканчивается в 14 : 00 с понедельника по пятницу. В моем классе 30 учеников, и каждый день у нас 6 − 7 уроков. Каждое занятие длится 45 минут с 10 −минутным перерывом между ними. Мои любимые уроки − история и математика. Они оба очень интересные. I usually wake up at 7 o’clock in the morning. I don’t like to have late nights, so I go to sleep at 10 pm. I try to have a strict daily routine. Every day I do morning exercises, go to school, do my homework and read books. Sometimes I play computer games or watch TV. At weekends I meet my friends and we go shopping or walk in the park. In winter I like to go skiing and in summer I like to ride my bicycle.
2 ) How similar is your daily routine to Marina’s?
My life is quite similar to Marina’s: we both have school studies, lunch in the school canteen and family dinner. I like to read books before going to sleep as well.
