The Batman: What does a liar do when he’s dead? DC fans have already worked out the Riddler’s puzzle

The Batman is one of the most anticipated comic book movies on the horizon but what’s the answer to the teaser’s riddle? What does a liar do when he’s dead?

Like with Spider-Man, we’ve had so many interpretations of Batman and Bruce Wayne that it’s getting increasingly difficult to keep track of them all.

While some will always have their favourites, there’s always plenty of excitement when a new Batman film is on the horizon and Matt Reeves’ The Batman is no different.

We were promised a much darker and grittier affair in The Batman and the first teaser, revealed at the DC FanDome event, certainly lived up to the billing as we caught our first glimpses of the film’s supporting characters including Paul Dano’s Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman among others.

However, one moment of the teaser trailer has caught fans’ attention more than any other, a riddle we see scribbled in a greetings card: “What does a liar do when he’s dead?”

Naturally, fans have been quick to get to work on solving the riddle.

The Batman

Set for release in 2021, The Batman looks to take the caped crusader back to his routes as ‘the world’s greatest detective.’

The noir-style story is set to reunite Batman with the Riddler, a villain we’ve not seen on the big screen since Jim Carrey’s cartoonish take on the character in 1995’s Batman Forever.

This time, however, while the garishly green outfit may be gone in favour of a thick coat and a nightmarish mask, Paul Dano’s Riddler still has a few questions to ask of Batman.

During the teaser trailer, we catch a very brief glimpse of a greetings card that the Riddler has left for Batman.

Inside is the question:

However, the solution to the riddle is written in a series of symbols which, at first glance, appear to be nothing more than gibberish.

However, keen-eyed Batman fans have taken it upon themselves to crack the code.

Solved: What does a liar do when he’s dead?

That’s right, the answer to the Riddler’s puzzle is “he lies still.”

The pun is a clever double entendre and can be taken to mean that the liar is not only still because he’s dead but also that he still lies even in death.

Several fans across social media have already solved the puzzle with one fan on Twitter detailing how they worked out the riddle in a four-tweet thread.

The key to solving the riddle here is substituting the symbols out for letters but the question is which ones?

Andrew Lane on Twitter explained that the letters E and L are crucial to unlocking this riddle. E is the most commonly used single letter in the English language while L is the most commonly used double letter.

Can You Solve The Batman Trailer Riddle? The Internet Already Has.

Looks like the Riddler took inspiration from the Zodiac killer.

Warner Bros.’ first look at The Batman (starring Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, and Colin Farrell) raises plenty of batsuit and eye makeup questions, but its most popular internet nugget comes in the form of a riddle, written by Dano’s Riddler, read aloud by Commissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and looking like something out of Zodiac.

The content of the message is read while we see images of a crime scene, a dead man (who in another cut may be Bruce Wayne’s father) with duct tape wrapped around his head and a message written across the tape: «no more lies.» Gordon then reads: «From your secret friend. Who. Haven’t a clue? Let’s play a game. Just me and you.»

We then see the card with these lines on the right side and the riddle «what does a liar do when he’s dead?» written on the left. Below everything is a grouping of 11 signs similar to hieroglyphics.

Online codebreakers believe they’ve already cracked the cypher. Game designer Mike Selinker explains how he solved it in a 12-part Twitter post.

Before we unfurl that post, we’ll give you some of Selinker’s hints for codebreaking. (You could also just consider the riddle itself: «What does a liar do when he’s dead?» Riddle fans might be able to untangle this without going all windtalker.)

Here’s a better look at the message:

The first trick is to identify repetitions. How many new and repeated characters do you see?

Selinker counts only 6 distinct characters across 11 letters. He also makes a few key assumptions: (1) the symbols stand in for letters of the roman alphabet, (2) the symbols correspond to only one letter, and (3) the letters form words that can be read from left to right.

Here’s his pattern: 123425 [line break] 56433.

Figuring out the rest is all just «brute force,» Selinker writes. It has to do with making a series of logical deductions based on English spelling patterns (double consonants, for instance) and then just doing a lot of savvy guessing and checking.

Студия Warner Bros. прекрасно справилась с задачей разогреть интерес к новому фильму о Темном рыцаре. Дебютный трейлер «Бэтмена» (The Batman) стал самой обсуждаемой премьерой мероприятия DC FanDome, чуть позже обсуждение разгорелось с новой силой, когда в странном мужике из ролика опознали загримированного до неузнаваемости Колина Фаррелла, а теперь в фокусе оказались интересные детали.

Как водится, энтузиастов, увлеченных разбором трейлеров к новинкам, в сети полным-полно. А особую любовь такие юзеры питают к экранизациям комиксов, вылавливая из кадров малейшие намеки на развитие сюжета. Среди таких — TheMasterD101 из Твиттера, поделившийся в сети разгадкой ребуса злодея Загадочника, который устроил Бэтмену мрачную игру в кошки-мышки.

Звучащая в трейлере загадка гласит:

Повозившись с мелькнувшим на секунду шифром, парень выдал ответ: «He lies still». Это игра слов, одновременно означающая «он продолжает лежать» (или «он лежит неподвижно») и «он продолжает лгать». Понятное дело, вне контекста этот ребус совершенно ни о чем не говорит, но приятно, что авторы фильма сочинили его не наобум.
