40.1. Many people continue to pursue their dream career after finishing school and go on to become a professional in a field that they dreamed of in childhood. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out what professions are desirable to kids. I have found some data on this issue and organised it in the table below.

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the graph. The first one is that the highest number of children wand to work in medicine, arts and design. The second one is that the lowest percentage of kids want to work in the transport industry.

It is also worth mentioning that work in the security industry is only slightly more popular than in the IT.

In my opinion, the statistics in the table reveal an important problem. There are not a lot of children who want to work in the developing world of information technology, which will determine much of the progress in the coming years. To solve this problem, schools should focus more on teaching children about IT.

In conclusion, I believe that having a goal of becoming a professional in some field is important for any child, as it encourages them to work hard to reach their goals.

40.2. Horses provided the first means of travel to humankind. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out the horse population from 1870 to 1950, I have found some data on this issue and organized it in the chart below

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the chart below. The first one is that in the year 1950 the number of horses was only five million. The second one is that the highest population of horses was recorded in 1910 to be 24 million.

It is also worth mentioning that the the horse population decreased significantly from 1910 to 1950

In my opinion, the statistics in the chart reveal an important problem. We can see that the number of horses declined considerably by 1950, which could imply that this number has continued to decrease in the past few years. This can lead to an under population of horses, which can place them as an endangered species. I think that in order to solve this problem there should be a regulation of the quantity of horses to prevent it reaching critical numbers.

In conclusion, I believe that the regulation of the quantity of horses can prevent it reaching an endangered species status.

Transport and vehicles

Write 200−250 words. Use the following plan:

— select and report 2−3 main facts;

— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant;

— outline a problem that can arise with robots and suggest the way of solving it;

— draw a conclusion giving your personal opinion on the role of robots in human life.

According to the data, the children have quite a wide range of tastes when it comes to future job. It is clear that 33% of the respondents choose doctor to be their dream job. Being an artist or a designer ranks second in popularity with 31% of the surveyed children. Interestingly, 15% of the respondents don’t mind earning their living as police officer or security guard.

The statistics analysis shows that IT industry, chosen by 12% of the respondents, is by 3% less popular than working in a police office. However, their tastes may change due to an increasing popularity of the computers among younger generation.

Although children like playing different professional roles, usually they do not know what qualities and knowledge they will really need to make their dream come true. Thus, they sometimes make wrong choices and this seems to be a problem. To solve the problem, it is necessary to organize special courses in order to children can visit work places and understand what people really do there and what skills they need.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that having a dream job is very important for children. Their future career will depend on their desire, determination and perseverance. (255 words)

40.2 Many people believe that fast developing technologies become an essential part of everyday life particularly there is a variety of them. The aim of the project I am working on is to find out what fields robots are used in nowadays. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the diagram.

According to the data, there is quite a wide range of spheres where robots are used and they are rather different. It is clear that the majority of the respondents appreciate automation and robotics in factories and plants, 70% of the interviewed have said about it. However, using robots in medicine as well as in household has also found supporters, so that 16% of the respondents have chosen each of these two categories. Besides, a small number of the respondents consider security, science, transport and vehicles to be promising areas for robotics development.

It is worth mentioning that robots helping about the house are more popular than self-driving cars. Obviously, automatic household appliances are wide spread nowadays and yet people are still dreaming about robotized vehicles.

One problem that can arise with robots is that people do not know what to do if something goes wrong. New technologies are based on very specific knowledge and instructions are usually written so that nobody can understand it. One solution to this problem is to create special applications with video instruction.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that robots play a significant role in human life. I hope people will use them wisely. (257 words)

Teens choose their future career independently

Alexandra Yuzhaninova, a Junior Research Fellow at the HSE’s Institute for Educational Studies, refutes the commonly accepted opinion that teenagers’ hopes concerning their future employment depend mostly on their parents’ opinion and their cultural level. In her article «Secondary School Students’ Expectations Regarding Future Work», published in HSE’s Journal of Education 1 (2014), Yuzhaninova shows how a family’s cultural capital (in particular, a rich home library, the number of classics in it, and the amount of art the student has at home) do not drastically impact a pupil’s professional ambitions.

The article was based on the results of the first wave of a longitudinal study launched in 2010 by the HSE’s Institute for Educational Studies as part of the project Monitoring Educational and Employment Trajectories of Secondary and Higher Education. At the end of 2012, nearly 3,800 students from nine grades were surveyed in 41 Russian regions. Both children and their parents answered questions concerning future jobs.

In the set of values associated with future work, the following were identified:

Children listen to their parents, but want to decide for themselves

In selecting family factors that affect children’s expectations concerning a future job, the impact of parents’ educational and professional status was factored into the time it takes pupils to make decisions concerning a career. The moment in time when such a decision is made depends on the attitude towards achieving success in life. This attitude will be different for young people from various levels of society. Another important family factor that influences children’s ideas about future work is pressure from parents.

The research’s results show that among young individuals, both male and female, there is a high percentage of those who listen to the opinion of adults – nearly 40% in each subgroup. Parents and children’s expectations nonetheless turned out to be unconnected from a purely statistical standpoint. ‘ It is likely that «it is important for me to listen to opinions» and «I do as my parents suggest» are two different fields – the declared and the real behaviour of a student,’ Alexandra Yuzhaninova says.

In general, the group of independent variables that are related to the cultural background of the family includes the level of education and professional status of the father and mother, the volume and composition of the home library, and having literary classics and works of art at home.

The study showed that a family’s cultural capital, as strange as it may be, has very little influence on teenagers’ expectations as concerns future employment, Alexandra Yuzhaninova notes. ‘The result we got – specifically, that the number of books, as well as the presence of a collection of classics and art at the student’s home, do not affect his or her professional aspirations – contradicts long-held beliefs about the importance of family cultural capital for a person’s professional life,’ the author claims.

The only dependence found between the cultural status of a family and the values attributed to a student’s future work is that when cultural resources exist in the family, the teenager is more likely to focus on a job that ensures independence.

Independent children want an interesting job

Alexandra Yuzhaninova lists other correlations between family characteristics and students’ expectations of future work as such:

A job’s value is measured by salary and emotions

If a future job’s values are analyzed in students’ ideas about breaking from their family background, then a high salary and emotional involvement are most important among these values.

A high salary is the most expected aspect of a first job. More than half of student – 51.8% – noted that they preferred this most.

Emotional involvement is considered important by 42% of respondents. It is also important to note that just 25.8% of respondents said this did not really matter.

Ninth-graders are least concerned with independence, the possibility to control one’s working time. Only 18.4% of respondents believed this to be important.

The share of those who found it difficult to respond to statements about values is also quite high – about a third in each category. It is obvious that a significant portion of ninth-graders have simply not yet chosen their future profession or university.

High income27,9158,95,85,56,630,3100

Most parents’ expectations of their children’s first job are the same as those of the adolescents themselves – in both groups, the most popular answer was high income, and the least popular was independence. Some 61% of parents expect a decent salary for their children, while just 12% of mothers and fathers voted for the ability to manage one’s own work time.

It is also important for adults that their children’s job be safe; 34% of parents said this. In addition, 50% pointed out emotional involvement, noting the significance of voluntary choice and interest in the job.

Desire to learn and perseverance affect ideas about work

Children’s expectations for future work are also affected considerably by the respondent’s personal characteristics. The study identified attitude towards learning to be among these characteristics. The author calculates that 86% of Russian students like to learn. In addition, older students tend to evaluate themselves as diligent and driven. In their own opinion, they are least characterized by a lack of belief in themselves and work addiction.

The highest gender-based difference (15%) was in self-assessments of how result-oriented the student is, as boys consider themselves to have more drive.

The relationship between drive and students’ expectations regarding work can be described as such: if a teenager says he or she is set on achieving goals and has strong interests, the teenager is more likely to look for highly profitable work. Students that are set on achieving their goals are also more set on obtaining a job that allows them to feel emotionally involved in their field.

Students who like to learn will likely seek prestige in a job. «It is likely that they want to transfer the recognition they receive for their grades from teachers at school into their adult lives,» Alexandra Yuzhaninova notes.

It is curious that persistence in reaching goals is negatively associated with a student’s desire to work with understanding colleagues. It is likely that belonging to the team serves as more of a barrier for such respondents when performing tasks in a competitive environment, the author concludes.

40.1. The population of a country is extremely important, as it defines its ability to progress and prosper. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at analyzing the population of Russia in the last six decades. I have found some data on this issue and organised it in the table below.

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the table. The first one is that the population was the highest in 1990, at almost 148 million people. The second one is that the lowest population was in 1960.

It is also worth mentioning that Russia experienced a growth in population from 2010 to 2020 after a long period of population loss.

In my opinion, the statistics in the table reveal an important problem. The Russian population has fallen significantly since the 1990s, which affects its economy, the ability of the government to pay sufficient pensions to elderly people and many other factors. To solve this problem, our government should continue providing benefits to mothers, encouraging more people to have a baby.

In conclusion, I believe that demographics determine the future of a country, so special attention should be given to it by both the government and people living in the country.

40.2. The popularity of movie genres shows the entertainment inclinations of modern society. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out the percentage of people who enjoy a movie genre. I have found some data on this issue and have organized it in the chart below.

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the chart below. The first one is that 90% of people like comedy. The second one is that only 48% of people like horror movies.

It is also worth mentioning that adventure movies are only 2% less popular than comedy movies.

In my opinion, the statistics in the chart reveal an important problem. We can see that the public doesn’t incline at all to educational movies like documentaries. I think that in order to solve this problem there should be a greater production of educational movies, so that the public would have a greater range of choices to choose from.

In conclusion, I believe that the promotion of documentaries can have an incredible outcome on the education of society as a whole. This would promote a more critical thinking in everyone’s daily life, which in turn can help the overall development of the society.

40.2 Imagine that you are doing a project on the number of countries participating in the Summer Olympics. You

have collected some data on the subject (see the diagram below).

Comment on the data in the diagram and give your personal opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200−250 words. Use the following plan:

— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant;

— outline a problem that can arise with the countries’ participation in the Olympics and suggest the way of solving it;

— draw a conclusion giving your personal opinion on the importance of Olympics participation

40.1. Literacy is absolutely vital in today’s information-rich world. Without the ability to read a person can’t study effectively and will stay relatively uneducated for all of their life. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out the literacy rates in various countries. I have found some data on this issue and organised it in the table below.

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the table. The first one is that Russia has the highest literacy rate of the countries listed. The second one is that Niger has by far the lowest literacy rate at just 19.1%.

It is also worth mentioning that Libya’s literacy rate is only 8.7% behind Russia’s.

In my opinion, the statistics in the table reveal an important problem. Some countries have extremely low literacy rates, which tremendously slows down their development. To solve this problem, there should be more organisations which help people in those countries. Moreover, the governments of those countries should focus much more on educating their people.

In conclusion, I believe that a high level of literacy is extremely important for any country to progress, making raising the literacy rate worldwide a priority for all of mankind.

40.2. The Summer Olympics play a vital role in the encouragement of sport and its recognition between countries in the world. My project, which I am still working on, is aimed at finding out the number of countries participating in the Summer Olympics. I have found some data on this issue and organized it in the chart below.

I can identify two main features of the statistics presented in the chart below. The first one is that in 2004 there were a total of 200 countries participating in the Summer Olympics. The second one is that in 1896 only 12 countries participated in the Summer Olympics..

It is also worth mentioning that the number of countries participating in the Summer Olympics has been increasing significantly through the passing of the years.

In my opinion, the statistics in the chart reveal an important problem. The competition between all the countries can develop rivalry, which in turn can lead to political conflicts between the countries. I think that in order to solve this problem the Olympics should promote a fair and healthy competitive environment, where all countries are treated equally..

In conclusion, I believe that the promotion of healthy competitiveness can lead to better political relationships between countries.

What teenagers in Zetland use social networks for

To get entertained

To share and follow news

To attend fan groups

To upload photos

To promote hobbies

Write 200−250 words.

— conclude by giving your opinion on the role of social networks in our life.

40.1 Spending free time has always been fun for teenagers. While doing a project on how teenagers in Zetland spend their free time, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, approximately half of all the teenagers in Zetland, that is 47%, choose hanging out with friends as their favourite pastime. Watching movies comes second in popularity with 20% of the surveyed. Surprisingly, only 5% of the respondents like reading the same book to discuss it later, and it is the least preferred free time activity.

The data analysis reveals that shopping online, chosen by 16% of the respondents, is almost three times as popular as reading, whereas doing online shopping is by 4% more favoured than cooking, which is practised only by 12% of the teenagers. It is quite understandable why shopping online is far more preferable: it is convenient, time-saving and fun.

Although modern teenagers are quite active in going out together, they seem to neglect reading and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem local authorities could promote reading in public places like parks or youth centres by involving celebrities into this activity. Thus, reading and discussing could regain their popularity.

In conclusion, I believe that despite the obvious disbalance between the active and passive forms of pastime, spending one’s free time and enjoying it is vital for a teenager’s mind and body. It’s an open secret that both work and play should be balanced. (251 words)

40.2 Nowadays, using social networking sites like Instagram or Facebook has gradually become an inseparable part of teenagers’ lives as a staple means of communication. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland use social networks for, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

The diagram shows that more than a half of all the teenagers in Zetland, that is 54%, use social media to get entertained. Sharing and following news ranks second in popularity with 21% of the surveyed adolescents. Unexpectedly, only 2% of the respondents use social platforms to promote their hobbies and it is the smallest amount.

The statistics analysis demonstrates that attending fan groups, which makes 12%, is six times as popular as promoting hobbies online. At the same time, uploading photos is almost as popular as being a celebrity follower and is only by 1% less popular.

Although the majority of teenagers use social networks for different purposes, none of them has mentioned using social media for learning and it seems to be a problem. One of the solutions could be promoting virtual learning communities where both teachers and learners would share their ideas and experience.

To sum up, I believe that social platforms will never become unpopular, as they provide a great opportunity to socialize, make friends, follow new trends in fashion, take up a hobby, etc. However, it is also important to be careful not to spend too much time on screens — social media are quite addictive. IELTS Essay, topic: Working children

In many countries children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it a valuable work experience, which is important for learning and taking responsibility. What is your opinion?

Nowadays, many children involved in different types of jobs to have some kind of financial assurance for themselves. However, whether this is good for their development and personality is a controversial issue. I personally believe that paid works is harmful for children for several reasons.

This brings me to the second point. Defenders of child labour that it is an effective method of learning. The point is children should be able to apply knowledge taught to them in a real life working environment. Although this is undoubtedly true, it also means that children may neglect the classroom study and even fail the class. The worst thing is yet to come. They may become so preoccupied with the benefits ahead of them such as small salary that they may leave school.

Finally, supporters say that it helps them to build responsibility in the family. They will understand how it is difficult to earn money and therefore have compassion for their parents. This is true to a certain extent, but may have a totally adverse effect on children. As children can make money at an early age, they would feel that it is appropriate to spend it on luxury things.

In conclusion, I think that parents should take measures to restrict their child from work, otherwise it would have negative consequences to their future.

This is a great essay, a Band 7+ candidate. My only suggestion is to divide your arguments so that you would have 2 paragraphs covering arguments ‘against’ and one covering arguments ‘for’ or vise versa. Don’t mix arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’ in one paragraph.
