• Who is your favourite actor?
This is a significant question for me. There are several actors whom I admire most but I’d prefer Al Pacino. • Why should we plan for our future?
To do better in everything, we have to keep a plan and work accordingly. Since future is always uncertain and if we do not have any plans, it would be impossible for us to reach our goals.

• What are some plans you had a few years ago but you did not fulfil them? Why?
I, in fact, planned to achieve some computer skill like graphics design, web design, computer programming etc. but could not fulfil them. Due to heavy academic pressure, I could not complete the plans and in this professional life, I’m unable to manage time for the purpose.

IELTS Book 9. SPEAKING TEST 1

1. What games are popular in your country?
Well, if we can consider sports as games, then football is definitely the most popular game in my country, but we also love board games like chess.

2. Do you play any games?
Not regularly these days. I play the occasional game of tennis with my brother-in-law, and I recently played a bowling game on the Nintendo Wii with my nephew. I wasn’t very good at it.

3. How do people learn to play games in your country?
I think children teach each other to play games. I remember a friend at primary school teaching me to play chess, for example.

4. Do you think it’s important for people to play games?
Yes, it’s really important, especially for children. I think research has shown that play can improve brain development, intelligence, creativity, and the ability to cooperate with others.

Describe an open-air or street market which you enjoyed visiting.

I think nowadays small local markets are disappearing for many different reasons. I can remember my parents selling junk and other household things they didn’t want anymore at a garage sale, but I know people now who do the same thing but on eBay and other internet sites like that. I think internet auction sites are more popular than traditional markets especially for young people.

Yes, markets can be a good option depending on the kind of items you want to sell. I think that if you’re selling food then it’s a good idea to try and sell it at a local market if you can. After all, it’s a little difficult to taste food on an internet auction site, so it’s much easier at a market. A lot has to do with the local culture, I think produce markets are more popular in agricultural areas of the country, but not so common in cities and town nowadays. I suppose another item might be furniture which is handmade or antique, you know, the type made by local crafstmen, that still seems to be popular at some markets.

No, I don’t. Most young people aren’t really interested in going to markets and places like that. Most of my friends buy things on the internet and rarely go shopping like our parents used to. It’s just so much easier, maybe it’s not as interesting as meeting people in a market, but it’s certainly more convenient and it doesn’t depend on the weather, and you can also get a better choice when you look on the internet. I think the future of traditional markets might be somewhat limited to certain items which are very specialized.

Part 3 – Two-way discussion:

Shopping at markets:
Q. Do people in your country enjoy going to open-air markets that sell things like food or clothes or old objects? Which type of market is more popular? Why?
Q. Do you think markets are more suitable places for selling certain types of things? Which ones? Why do you think this is?
Q. Do you think young people feel the same about shopping at markets as older people? Why is that?
Shopping in general:
Q. What do you think are the advantages of buying things from shops rather than markets?
Q. How does advertising influence what people choose to buy? Is this true for everyone?
Q. Do you think that any recent changes in the way people live have affected general shopping trends?

Part 1: Introduction & Interview

Q. 1. What games are popular in your country? [Why?]
Answer: In my country, football and cricket are the most popular games mainly because people have easy access to these sports. They are also popular because a lot of companies patronize and sponsor these games for commercial reasons. Hockey is also a popular game in my country to some extent because we have some good infrastructure to facilitate this game.

Q. 2. Do you play any games? [Why/why not?]
Answer: Unfortunately, I don’t really play any sports these days because I remain busy with my job and other priorities. Besides, not too many people in my country like to play a particular sport (billiards) which I like to play from time to time.

Q. 3. How do people learn to play games in your country?
Answer: Well, people in my country usually learn to play different kinds of sports from their early childhood in their schools and neighbourhood. Of course, there are many sports and fitness training centres in my country for people who are really serious about building a career in sports.

Q. 4. Do you think it’s important for people to play games? [Why/why not?]
Answer: Yes, I do think that it is essential for people to play different games and sports mainly because it allows people to remain physically fit and mentally active. Besides, playing different kinds of sports allow people to socialize with friends and other people which is certainly good for a healthy social bond.

Part 1: Details Discussion

Q. 1. What types of games and sports are popular in your country?
Answer: People in my country like to get involved in different kinds of games and sports outside of their regular works and activities. For example, some people like to play soccer (football) while others would prefer to play sports like hockey, cricket, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and long tennis, depending on the time of the year. While the sports and games, just mentioned above, are popular among the adults and children alike, sports like kite flying, long jump and high jump are especially more popular among the children. Similarly, swimming is also a very popular sport (some would prefer to call it “activity”) among the children in my country during the summertime.

Q. 2. Do you think the types of games and sports that are popular today will change in the future?
Answer: No, I don’t really think that games and sports, that are popular today, will change in the future if it is meant to suggest that other sports would replace them. Instead, new rules and new versions of the games would most likely be introduced to make them even more interesting and competitive. For example, football (soccer) was more violent and brutal game before 1863 when players could actually “hack” and kick down and opponent. In the same way, in 1924, it was decided that a corner kick would be allowed to go straight inside the “goal”. “Cricket” has also witnessed significant changes in rules, while new versions of the game like “one day international” and “T20” have also been introduced to make it even more popular and interesting. However, the popularity of virtual games or online games will surely increase in the future.

Q. 3. Young children these days do not spend enough time playing outdoors. What could be the possible reasons for this trend?
Answer: There are several possible reasons, for which young children today don’t spend enough time playing outdoors. The main reason being is that they are able to play different kinds of video games on computers and watch different kinds of children’s programmes on television without feeling the need to go outside of their homes. Secondly, they are being “forced” to do more school homework and study which eventually make them feel too tired to go outside and play. Finally, the parents these days are not proactive enough, because of their busy work schedules, to encourage their children and take them outside to play and socialize with other kids.

Q. 4. How can we encourage young children to take part in sports and games more often?
Answer: We can do several things to encourage young children to take part in outdoor sports and games more often. To start with, the parents can take their children to stadiums in order to watch different kinds of games and ask different kinds of interesting questions about these sports. Secondly, we can tell the children that it is perfectly alright to lose in a game because children feel embarrassed when they lose and eventually stop playing. Besides, we can host some sort of outdoor parties or play dates, where some light snacks would also be offered, periodically so that they can join together with other children and have fun playing some game of their choice while also socializing with each other in a free manner.

Q. 5. What types of games can benefit children most?
Answer: Any kind of games, which ensure the mental and physical growth of children, would benefit them. Having said that, however, any kind of interactive games, in which children can communicate with others and get feedback on what they say, and “board games” would help the mental growth of a child significantly. On the other hands, any kind of games, which require a certain level of physical activity, can boost the physical growth of a child, and such games may include playing soccer, rugby or badminton. Even playing “hide-and-seek” with other children may ensure better physical growth for them.

Q. 6. It is often said that games should be both educative and entertaining? What’s your opinion about it?
Answer: Well, it depends on who are playing the games. If we are talking about the games, which are played by children among themselves, they can be both educational and entertaining because children could always use some kinds of “life lessons” in order to help themselves grow as an “adult”. In fact, there indeed is a thing called “edutainment”, where “education” and “entertainment” perfectly interact with each other in order to offer the best of both worlds (“jigsaw puzzle” can be a good example here which is appropriate for all age groups). But, if we are talking about the games, played by the adults, then they can purely be “entertaining’ without necessarily having any educational aspects attached to them.

in my opinion, chess is a game that can e a bit hard to describe, the vocabulary resource is limited and it is very long time I haven’t played chess.
in brief, I agree that we can mention chess as a game that few people enjoy, I believe we should dicuss sports in this subject.

4. yes i think that. game is one of the most important thing in our lives, when we have a stress we can play some games to relax. if without games we will feel bored.

People often take game and sport as to be the same one. However, game and sport are entirely different. A game involves more than one person and a sport pertains to only an individual’s skills and performance.A person participating in a sport is called as athlete or a sports person. A person who participates in a game is known as player.

1. Cricket and Tennis are the most popular game in my country though Hockey is our national game.
2. Yes, I play Table Tennis. I was trained during my school days and participated in city zonal level matches. Nowadays, I am playing Table Tennis in offices during tea breaks. It is one of the recreational facility provided by our offices to relax ourselves from work.

4. Games is one of the quickest way to ease out the tension from work life and also fun way to keep fit and stay healthy.

I think it is acceptable to talk about sports and games such as chess, cards, puzzle etc. Both types of games have their own importance.
In my country, people love to play all most all types of games, but cricket, hockey and football are more popular than others. Even these games are popular among those who doesn’t play, but enjoy to see these games. You can see children to play these games even on street sights.
Yes, i was a basketball player and played a lot of games. Even i was a state level player at school time and played in first 5 members of the team. I also like to play puzzles and chess and some time badminton at home with my family members and friends.
Nowadays, there are many ways to learn about anything. People learn games through internet, from friends or personal tutor. Its depend on their needs how and for what purpose they wanna learn games. Chess, Puzzles and other such types of memory increasing games can easily learn from internet and if you wanna enjoy outdoor games for entertainment you can learn from your friends. But if you adopt games as your career you should hire a personal trainer to learn every technique. As in my country, there is an opportunity for every child to learn about any game from school level.
Absolutely,it is essential to play games because they improves memory and also keep us fit and healthy. It also helps us to build new relationships between people and then countries. As we can see Olympic level games helps to make countries relationship stronger.

Hi teacher and friends,

I think it must be acceptable, because ‘game’ is a common word, which includes all kind of sports like chess, tennis, football, badminton, etc.
1. Football, volleyball and martial arts are the most popular games in my country. You can see people, especially school children playing football and volleyball everywhere even in the streets.
2. I used to play volleyball when I was one of member in our school national team. Then I had not play almost 4 years because of my lessons. And now, I do yoga, one of scare sport for my country.
3. In general, football and volleyball are taught us when we study in school. Recently, hockey and basketball are also added this line. But you can learn how to do martial arts you have to attend sport centers.
4. Regarding me, it is one of the best occupation to be busy with. Firstly, it makes us healthy, secondly, we do not spend our free time useless, we are among our friends, teachers, so that we can learn something new from them. And I think that playing games can also prevent some people from their bad habits, such as drinking alcohols too much and so on.

Just to confirm for those who are confused: part 1 of the speaking test is supposed to be easy, and it won’t affect your score if you talk about a sport.

If you’re still worried, just answer like this: «Well, if we can consider sports as games, then football is definitely the most popular game in my country, but we also love board games like chess.»

I agree with you and thank you for your comment.
