What happened at the end of Birdman?

Birdman is a very innovative movie. The cinematography alone is brilliant, capturing the spirit behind the scenes at a Broadway Theatre.

And the screenplay seems, in part, an interesting view of actorly (mis)conduct denier the rehearsals of a production.

But what are we supposed to make of the ending. To me there seem to be two interpretations: one optimistic; one somewhat depressing or, at least, downbeat.

The movie, without giving too much away plot wise, seems to want to leave the audience with an optimistic ending. But this ending involves us accepting a somewhat magical realist reading of what happens. If we don’t buy the magical realism (or read it as the subjective psychological state of the lead character) then we have to accept a downbeat end.

Is that the right interpretation or does the movie deliberately leave us hanging? Which interpretation is intended? What really happened?

Andrew Martin gives 3 excellent interpretations of the ending in his response to a question about the telekinesis in the movie. His most satisfying explanation of the ending (both to him and to me) is this one:

I can’t take credit for this answer, but I wanted people who find this question to see it.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignornance) is an inherently metaphorical and rather surreal film.

Of course, this is just one analysis of a complex and very interpretive film.

What happened to Kate Lloyd?

Close to the end of The Thing (2011), Kate Lloyd burns the snow vehicle (or did she blow it up, one of the two). After that we are left to our own devices on her fate. Was this intended for us to believe that she died out there from exposure, or was this supposed to be an opening left for another movie, or did this serve some other purpose?

I didn’t think that Kate blew up the snowbile. I believe she torched her boyfriend and rode off. I assumed that she survived, and was not infected. The way the movie ended though with the helicopter pilot and Lars chasing down the infected dog, was interesting.

I only use infected here to refer to not being real and as being the thing. The movie was fun and worth many a watch.

The writer, Eric Heisserer, has revealed that in the script he wrote, Kate does not survive. He did an interview with the website «Bloody Disgusting»:

Question: So does Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character die at the end? In the film it’s a little unclear, was that ever spelled out in a draft?

Answer: “I was very clear with Kate’s fate in the draft. I understand that what I gave them doesn’t help in terms of growing a franchise. But there’s no way that she could survive. I had it written so that they chase after Sander [on the way to the ship at the end of the film]. They’re in a snowcat but he isn’t. But then you start to see his tracks they they’re following to the ship get longer and longer and more alien. And you realize that he transformed into something that can go very fast on the ice. That’s what the smart creature would do. So they get there and Carter checks the one flame unit they have and finds that it’s almost completely out of fuel. So they decide to take all of the fuel from the Snowcat and put it into the flame unit. Because it’s better to kill this thing [than to be able to get away]. So at the end where she makes a decision that she thinks Carter is The Thing [and she needs to kill him], we realize that she is burning her fuel. She’s burning her way home. And the last scene is her looking at the burning snowcat, with no other way of getting anywhere. And just the emotions of the past two days, she starts to cry and then just heads into the wind and starts walking. She is screwed. So that doesn’t happen [in the final film], but then again, that may be what audiences want“.

While we obviously don’t see all the events Heisserer describes in the finished movie, the version of events in the film don’t directly contradict Heisserer’s account, aside from the bit about using the fuel from the Snowcat to fill the flamethrowers. So, although the movie doesn’t show Kate sitting down in the snow and waiting to die, it is entirely plausible that she does so. Any other outcome would be totally contradictory to the overall theme of both of the films (the 2011 prequel and the classic 1982 original movie).

It is almost impossible to imagine that Kate survived her ordeal. The fact that she never reappears, and MacReady and the rest of the American team at Outpost 31 don’t seem to know anything about what happened in the Norwegian camp, suggest that Kate really did die in the middle of nowhere, probably by her own choice.

Viewers of Free Guy witnessed Guy (Ryan Reynolds) learn a lot about himself over the course of the two-hour movie. At the beginning of the film, Guy was a simple bank teller who did not know anything about the virtual or real world. By the end of the movie Guy’s world had changed from the ground up.

What happened at the end of Free Guy?

In the final scenes of Free Guy Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys’ (Joe Keery) original game code was released from Soonami by Antoine (Taika Waititi).

The two programmers then used their original game to create a brand new world full of unique artificially intelligent (AI) non-player characters (NPCs).

The last moments of the film show Guy enjoying his new world alongside his new friend The Dude.

Guy also finally reunited with his old friend from the bank, Buddy (Lil Rel Howery).

Going forward, it seems like Guy’s new world will continue to evolve the longer they play it.

In the outside world Millie didn’t realise Keys was asking her out on a coffee date, so turned him down.

Guy then told her all about how Keys had programmed Blue Shirt Guy to be her perfect man because he was in love with her.

After realising how much effort Keys put into creating her perfect love interest, she chased after him and met him in the street.

In a final tantalising moment, the film cut to black just as Millie and Keys ran towards one another to finally kiss.

Meanwhile, the fate of Antoine was also revealed to the viewers in a TV clip.

After the battle for Free City came to an end, Antoine was arrested by the authorities for his crimes.

The neatly wrapped-up ending does leave doubt in the mind of viewers, however.

This brand new intellectual property might lack any chance of getting a sequel, as all of the antagonists had been quashed by the time credits rolled.

Reynolds will surely want to start a brand new franchise in Free Guy, but will the events of the film allow him to?

Reynolds did recently reveal his hopes for a sequel, however, saying: «We all hope that we get to do this again. Either in this form as a sequel or something else.

«We’re lucky, a couple of people I’ve got the opportunity to work with multiple times, and I’m hoping that if not in another Free Guy movie, it’s in another movie or another form.»

Director Shawn Levy also mused over a sequel, saying: «I guess the short answer is yes. I’ve made things that launched franchises and I’ve made enough things to know that you just don’t know the outcome. We have bandied about and flirted with some ideas.»

He added: «I will say that for anyone who’s seen the movie if we make Free Guy 2, it will be titled Albuquerque Boiled Turkey. If you’ve seen this movie, you’ll understand that joke. It is 100% Free Guy 2: Albuquerque Boiled Turkey, based on one of seven million improv lines by Taika Waititi.» (Via Digital Spy)

What happened at the end of Rocky?

It’s been sometime since I saw Rocky, but I remember being confused by the ending.

The fight ends by both of them grabbing each other, and the referee pulling them apart. Rocky then goes looking for Adrian (his girlfriend), ignoring everyone who is trying to talk to him.

But who won the match, and what does the ending mean? Why was there no clear winner?

More than anything the end of Rocky illustrates that Rocky has «gone the distance» (all 15 rounds of the fight). That’s all he wanted. He didn’t care if he lost, (which he did. Apollo is the victor by points in this match) only that he didn’t loose by knock-out. He is elated that he «went the distance» and proved to Adrian that he had what it takes to go the distance. He’s looking for Adrian because he want to celebrate this victory with her. Nothing else is important. This is why he doesn’t care about having a rematch. He was never interested in winning the fight. He was only interested in «not being another bum from the neighborhood».

The need for «going the distance» as the main goal for Rocky as the protagonist is exposed in the lyrics to the theme song (albeit Rocky III) Eye of the Tiger by Survivor

Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet Just a man and his will to survive

and in a monologue he delivers to Adrian:

Ah come on, Adrian, it’s true. I was nobody. But that don’t matter either, you know? ‘Cause I was thinkin’, it really don’t matter if I lose this fight. It really don’t matter if this guy opens my head, either. ‘Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody’s ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I’m still standin’, I’m gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren’t just another bum from the neighborhood.

This monologue sets up the meaning of the end of the movie. The movie ends with the most important moment of Rockys life. Rocky is on top, because he’s gone the distance and proven that he was not just another bum from the neighborhood.

There was no clear winner by KO. But also by points there wasn’t a clear winner, but the movie still clearly shows that one of the three point judges (don’t know how they’re called or how they’re actually deciding at all) decided in favour of Rocky and two in favour of Apollo, so it was an extremely close call but Apollo won by points.

But in fact it doesn’t matter who won the match. Rocky has proved himself and he has shown that he can stand against Apollo. For the whole movie nobody believed in him and Apollo Creed took this whole fight as a mere show-fight, where he could pretend to give an outsider a chance, but he never took Rocky serious, until the actual fight. So the fact who’s the actual winner doesn’t matter so much and Rocky doesn’t even care. All he cares is that he stood his ground and proved to be an equal match for Apollo Creed. Now he just wants his peace with Adrian, which is also why he ignores everybody else. At this moment all those reporters and the actual sports success doesn’t count, his love for Adrian does. This is also shown in his final conversation with Apollo at the end of the fight, when both exhaustedly say to each other:

Rocky: Don’t want one.

Apollo (not even listening): Ain’t gonna be no rematch!

So Apollo is in the end just happy that this fight, which he expected to be a piece of cake, is finally over and he didn’t completely lose to this outsider. But Rocky is as happy as well and doesn’t want a rematch fight to «officially» win against Apollo. He has done his best and for himself he has won in a way.

This rather tie ending (when seen from a mere objective sports perspective) gives the movie a much more down-to-earth feel, I think. Rocky doesn’t just magically knock Apollo out, but neither does he go down as everybody expected. He just did his best and proved his value against all odds, nothing less and nothing more.
