layla1234 Is i t possible to ask: What have you been doing today?

layla1234 Is i t a commonly used question and gramatically correct?

layla1234 Can you give some examples when it is possible to use this tense?

Susan has been cooking all day. I wonder what she’s making.
Jack has been working on the car. That’s why his hands are so dirty and greasy now.
Jerry just won a teacher’s award. I asked him, «Have you been teaching for a long time?»

layla1234 What did you do yesterday? It the typical question when we are asking about the past right?

layla1234 What were you doing yesterday?

It’s OK in the right context. It doesn’t make sense to start a conversation like that. Typically the speaker has in mind another event that happened around the time that you «were doing» something.

I tried to call you several times yesterday, and you didn’t answer. What were you doing?

Implication: What were you doing at the times when I called? What were you doing that was so important that you couldn’t answer my call?

What do you say when you wanted to meet up with someone but they didn’t show up?

What were you doing/what have you been doing all day yesterday?

I still don’t understand the differences between What did you do yesterday/what have you been doing yesterday/what were you doing yesterday. This whole concept of different tenses is so confusing. I live in the US but my native tongue is German. I always find myself in conflict with textbook grammar rules as everyone here in the US seems to neglect them. I heard people say stuff like ‘ Bro what were you doing yesterday?? I was looking for you all day and you were nowhere to be found’ or ‘ Where were you?? We all were waiting at the [insert location] for you to show up’ or ‘ Where have you been so long?? I hate waiting on you!’ or ‘Where were you? I hate waiting on you’ . According to some textbook grammar rules all these usages are wrong.

If someone can clear that up I’d be more than happy.

What were you doing?-it describes two things,

(1)complete past-like yesterday (what were you doing yesterday?

What have you been doing up to.

What have you been doing since yesterday?

What have you been doing since morning?

Have have you been doing lately?

What have you been doing recently?

What have you been doing all the day today?

You can also say that with simple past

What did you do yesterday?

What did you do?(may be for short past or long past depend upon the massage that you want to convey.)

I personally use «What have you been doing?» and «What have you been up to?»

You could also use phrases like «What did you do today?» or «How was your day?»

They’re all equally correct and natural, just make sure you use «what» instead of «what’s» in «What have you been doing today?»

Usually i would use “what have you been up to” because it refers to what you have been doing at anytime of the day. ⭐️

“what have you been up to today” is more restricted to one day which might give a little less freedom to bring up other stuff

and “what were you up to today?” is good if you are talking at night of the middle of the day.

I will add to salemc’s answer. I like to use “Watcha doin?” as an extremely informal term with my friends, who are really the only people I personally use this type of phrase with. “Watcha doin” is a version of “What are you doing?” except it’s mispronounced in a way, the words are “blended” together to make it sound more casual. I’ll attach an audio recording of me saying the two.

@Vvlove0323 Yes! «Whatchu doin?» or «What’s up?» or «‘Sup» are all casual ways of asking what someone is doing or up to.

Hi please what’s the correct form? And is there any difference between American and British english?

Hi, Tom. How are you? Fine, and you?
I’m fine too. What have you been doing today?
I played football and was learning some English.

I’m strongly interested in this while it is clearly finished in the past but there is no specific time mentioned.

Thank you very much, Kuba
(besides I hope I haven’t gone into wrong topic. If so, I’m sorry (I’ve written here for the first time).)

Welcome to the Forum, kuba kuba!

In general, we try to match the structure of the question. In your example, I might say ‘I’ve been playing football and learning some English.’ However, the first version that you provided sounds fine to me too!

Welcome to the forum,kuba.

It really depends how Tom views the actions he did that day.

«I played football a bit, then I learned some English vocabulary» He sees these actions as finished and he’s probably focused on what he is going to do next.

There is a sentence found on the Web. It makes me confused in the grammar.

What have you done at school today?

Of course this sentence is considerror correct.I wonder why «today» used in the sentence with past participle tense? Is that time marker accepted in the use of past participle?

You’re in school, talking to one one of the pupils:

I see you’ve been painting lovely pictures. What else have you done/been doing in school today?

If the child has just come home from school, I would certainly use the simple past tense. (The school day is over.)

OK. It seems that time marker can be used.

But why the sentence below is wrong?
I have went home yesterday. (Wrong)
I went home yesterday. (Correct)

«Have went» is wrong by itself, lingkky. «I have gone» is normal.

Remember that the present perfect is a remark about the present that is linked to the past. «Yesterday» doesn’t make sense in a remark about the present moment.

I think you’ll learn more quickly about how to use the present perfect if you visit a grammar website that discusses English verb tenses. This will be much quicker and more efficient than posting random questions in the forum about verb tenses.
