Marvel’s What If. Season 2 2022 Release Confirmed By Writer
Marvel’s What If. season 2’s 2022 release is confirmed by head writer A.C. Bradley in response to a report that it would be arriving this year.
Jeffrey Wright led the cast of Marvel’s What If. as Uatu, better known as the Watcher, a member of an alien race who observes the Multiverse but refuses to interfere with its events until necessary. The series also featured the returns of most major MCU stars including Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell, Michael B. Jordan, Tom Hiddleston and Chadwick Boseman in his final performance as T’Challa prior to his death. Marvel’s What If. received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its vocal performances, unique stories and animation, though some criticism was directed towards the pacing of some episodes.
In response to a report from The Direct on Twitter of the release window, head writer A.C. Bradley confirmed that Marvel’s What If. season 2 will premiere in 2022. Bradley confirmed the release by stating «See you later this year, kids!» paired with hashtags for the studio and series. Check out Bradley’s announcement below:
Unlike most of its Disney+ counterparts, Marvel’s What If. season 2 was all but guaranteed ahead of the show’s premiere with studio head Kevin Feige confirming it was in development nearly two years before season 1 even premiered whilst the writers and cast continually teased ideas and progress in the lead up to its debut. Bradley’s confirmation that season 2 will release in 2022 may not come as much of a surprise as recent reports pointed towards both it and Secret Invasion premiering later this year while producer Brad Winderbaum indicated last August that it would likely premiere this year. Additionally, with scripts for What If. season 2 having been confirmed to be complete as of October and production running smoother on MCU projects than earlier on in the pandemic, it seems likely production is already underway on the animated series’ return.
With Marvel’s What If. season 2 now confirmed for a 2022 release date, MCU fans have a lot to look forward to in the rest of the year both on the big and small screens. Cumberbatch is currently finishing reshoots for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness slated for May, Oscar Isaac is gearing up for Moon Knight‘s premiere at the end of March, Taika Waititi is wrapping Thor: Love and Thunder for its July release and future Ironheart star Dominique Thorne has finished filming on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ahead of its November arrival. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Marvel’s What If. season 1 streaming on Disney+ now.
We Could Get Season 2 of What If…? as Early as 2022
The producers want a new season to come out every year.
It’s been an absolute blast to watch the first season of What If. Marvel Studios’ first-ever foray into the world of animation. You know the deal by now, but just in case: the show comes from the perspective of Uatu, The Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), who examines the hypothetical/alternate realities where scenarios from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films that we know and love (and have maybe rewatched about 100 times) were just slightly different. Sometimes those differentiations cause larger ripples in the timeline than others, but it always makes for 30 minutes of compelling superhero television.
The stakes in What If. were, for a while, unknown. But after the majority of the show’s first 7 episodes aired—each its own version of a standalone story or cautionary tale—things all started coming together when a universe-threatening for emerged. In this case, that was Ultron. And after the penultimate episode saw him threaten to wipe out life as we know it, The Watcher decided to break his oath and intervene for the finale, bringing together all of our heroes to form a brand new team. It made things fit together in a way that many didn’t see possible, and went a long way to make the entire first season, and What If. in general, feel more cohesive.
The way the first season of What If. ended could have an impact on how the second season—which we know, for sure, is coming—plays out. But even though we know some threads may continue to be built upon, the show is not going to lose its main focus: making us wonder. And we’re wondering a lot these days, not only about the rest of Season 1, but what more What If. season 2 could have in store.
Will there definitely be a Season 2 of What If. on Disney+?
Yes, we can be certain that there will. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed back in 2019 that What If. would just off the bat have a Season 1 and 2, both consisting of 10 episodes each. However, these plans changed when the world changed with Covid-19; both seasons will now have 9 episodes.
Executive producer Brad Winderbaum explained the situation in an interview with Collider. «We had to push an episode into Season 2. It was just, honestly, like everything else, that was a COVID impact,» he said. «There was an episode that just wouldn’t hit the completion date, but luckily we do get to see it in the second season of the show.»
So that’s good—we’re not losing anything they really wanted us to get.
Winderbaum also said that he and the entire What If. team envision the show as an annual release. «We’ll see what happens,» he said. «Obviously, I don’t want to predict the future with this new world we live in, but our intention is to make it an annual release.»
What would Season 2 of What If. be about?
Remember that in the first episode of What If. it was Steve Rogers—not Bucky Barnes—who fell off the train and was experimented on by Arnim Zola and HYDRA. That means that while Steve may still be alive, there’s a decent chance that he’s been brainwashed and turned into an assassin for Captain Carter’s greatest enemies. While the episodes that have gone a little more out there have usually been among the more fun—we’re thinking the Marvel Dawn of the Dead we got midseason—a ‘What If. Steve Rogers Was The Winter Soldier?» episode sounds pretty damn good to us.
We’re also eager to see if some other teased threads wind up playing out. One possibility: Ego finding Peter Quill on earth, working at a Dairy Queen. Did you notice Kurt Russell’s name in the opening credits? Hard to imagine Disney would bring in an actor and star of that magnitude only for him to literally have just a line or two. Keep an eye on that specific thread for Season 2 as well.
When will Season 2 of What If. come out?
Captain Carter will return in Season 2
While we don’t know much about what will happen in Season 2, we know that Captain Carter (voiced by Hayley Atwell) will return. As Winderbaum told i09, that’s a character they feel very connected to.
“We realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter was going to be the character we would revisit in every season, and continue that adventure,” Winderbaum said. “Obviously, we’re telling a story on a giant multiversal canvas. So you never really know who’s going to pop up where and when. It’s very much an anthology, but there’s always opportunity for fun connections to be made.”
Whose voices will we hear in What If. Season 2?
Another question we don’t entirely know the answer to. But it’s safe to assume we’ll be hearing more from Hayley Atwell, considering its been confirmed that Captain Carter will return. Maybe that also means that the Captain America storyline characters are also involved, meaning Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson, and possibly Anthony Mackie could be involved as well. And it also likely means that Josh Keaton will voice Steve Rogers again, instead of Chris Evans.
That will likely be the case with all the voice re-castings; it’s likely that Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Holland (among others) will also not be voicing their characters. But on the flipside, we do expect those who did return to be back as well. That means Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, etc. should all return.
And by the time What If. Season 2 comes out, we’ll possibly have a whole slew of new heroes to get into the mix. Maybe Simu Liu comes in as Shang-Chi, or Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight? Maybe some of the Eternals, or Black Knight? Hell, maybe by that point we start hearing from some mutants or members of the Fantastic Four? Who’s to say?

Спин-офф Звёздного лорда Т’Чаллы и перенесённый эпизод с Тони Старком — о чём рассказали создатели «Что, если?»
Подошёл к концу первый сезон сериала «Что, если…?» (What If…?)
Marvel Studios / Lego

What If. Season 2 Could Premiere In 2022
During a recent press tour, Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum reveals that What If. season 2 could potentially see a release as early as 2022.
A Marvel producer recently suggested that season 2 of What If. could see a release as early as 2022. With a 9 episode first season, What If. takes iconic MCU storylines and reinvents them in a variety of different ways, as it explores the different corners of the multiverse. By experimenting with the typical narrative formula of these stories, it allows the writers to generate interesting new concepts and genres within the MCU, as well as showcase certain new heroes who may have never found their way to the MCU through conventional means.
Airing weekly on Disney+, the first two episodes of the series had a predominant focus on how the MCU would be altered if one of the main heroes were changed, for instance, how the universe would fare differently if T’Challa became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. The third episode however, shifted genres entirely into a murder mystery, as it investigated what would happen if the Avengers were killed off one by one, before their very first mission. Many of the MCU’s original cast members return to voice their respective characters in animated form, including Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter/Captain Carter, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and even the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa.
While season 1 of the show still has 6 episodes set for release, it appears that Marvel already has plans set in motion for season 2. During a recent press tour for What If. producer Brad Winderbaum revealed to Collider, that they are aiming for a new season of the show to be released annually, with season 2 planned as early as 2022. Check out his quote below:
«As you know with animation, it takes a long time to produce. We were fortunate enough to get the green light on a second season early enough to have a chance to release it next year. We’ll see what happens. Obviously, I don’t want to predict the future with this new world we live in, but our intention is to make it an annual release.»
With an increasing number of heroes soon to be added to the MCU, including Shang-Chi and the Eternals, Marvel will have even more characters and storylines to explore in season 2 of What If. As it still remains unclear whether the show is a collection of separate one-off stories, or if they will eventually join together to form a wider narrative, it will be interesting to see which stories get expanded upon further in season 2. Captain Carter is one character who definitely seems as if she has a lot more characterization to come and her own stories to tell in future episodes, while the passing of Chadwick Boseman means that T’Challa shouldn’t be included past season 1, out of the respect for the late actor who brought so much to the role.
Winderbaum also commented on how the events of What If. are just as important as the rest of the events in the MCU. With the multiverse soon becoming major plot line in both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there is a huge potential that certain characters from What If. could eventually make their live-action debut, such as Captain Carter. It could also give the perfect origin for some of Marvel’s recently acquired teams, including the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, to make their way to the MCU, without having to justify why they weren’t around to save the world prior to that point.

What If Season 2 Officially Announced For Disney+
Marvel’s What If? season 2 is officially announced by Disney+ during Disney+ Day 2021, confirming the MCU multiverse will be further explored.
Marvel’s What If? season 2 is officially announced by Disney+ during Disney+ Day 2021, confirming the MCU multiverse will be further explored. The first animated show set within the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 and, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, debuted during its originally established release window of Summer 2021. It’s the fourth MCU show to release on Disney+, following the premieres of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki earlier this year.
Throughout What If? season 1, the show has mostly followed an anthology format, with each episode tackling a different scenario that diverges from the main MCU timeline. What If? episodes have explored ideas like Marvel Zombies, Peggy Carter becoming a super soldier and T’Challa becoming Star-Lord. In the later episodes, though, What If? took a turn and became more serialized, with the multiverse being threatened by Vision Ultron, who’s harnessed the powers of the Infinity Stones. That set the stage for the What If? finale to see The Watcher assemble a team of heroes from previous episodes to protect the multiverse.
On Disney+ Day, What If? season 2 was confirmed by Disney+. Neither a release date nor release window was offered by Disney+, with the streaming service simply saying the second batch of episodes are «coming soon.» It’s possible, What If? season 2 could release in 2022, but it may not arrive until 2023.
While What If? season 2 has been in the works for some time, it’s now official the series is continuing on, which shows Marvel and Disney’s confidence in the project. After all, it’s only the second MCU Disney+ show to get renewed, with WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier seemingly being one-offs. It’s worth noting WandaVision set up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Falcon set up Captain America 4, so they were likely intended to be only one season each. As for What If?, there’s plenty more in Phase 4 (and earlier) to pull from, especially since What If? has expanded the multiverse to adapt comics storylines like Marvel Zombies. It’ll be exciting to see what types of stories will be in What If? season 2.
What If? season 2 will premiere on Disney+ in the future.
