The Secret Keeper was the witch or wizard designated to hide a secret by means of the Fidelius Charm. The secret was embedded in their very soul. Once a Secret Keeper was selected, the person who told them the secret would find themselves unable to pass the information on again, as the Secret Keeper was the only one capable of revealing the secret, whether orally or written. [1]

The Secret Keeper could tell as many people as they liked, but they must do so voluntarily. The secret couldn’t be blackmailed, bewitched, or tortured out of them.

History

First Wizarding War

Originally meant to be the Secret Keeper for James and Lily Potter, Sirius Black thought Voldemort was on to him (he thought that Remus Lupin was a spy). He therefore passed on the role of Secret Keeper to Peter Pettigrew. Albus Dumbledore originally offered to be the Potters’ Secret Keeper, but the couple refused on trust of their friends. Pettigrew was then the new Secret Keeper for James and Lily Potter after they went into hiding during the First Wizarding War with their infant son Harry, keeping their whereabouts in Godric’s Hollow a secret. However, Pettigrew was secretly a traitor to the Order of the Phoenix. He informed Lord Voldemort of the Potters’ location, resulting in the murders of James and Lily and Voldemort’s first defeat when the Killing Curse rebounded from Harry.

Sirius Black was later believed to have murdered Pettigrew and twelve bystanding Muggles in front of more than fifty eyewitnesses, when really Pettigrew had killed them himself and went into his Animagus form to flee the scene, leaving behind his severed index finger. Caught at the scene of the crime, Black was thus blamed for the betrayal of the Potters (not knowing that Pettigrew had really been the betrayer) and imprisoned in Azkaban for it without a trial.

He escaped twelve years later using what was believed to be a trick Voldemort taught him that made Black and his insanity unaffected by the Dementors’ depressing aura, when really Black had maintained his sanity due to the knowledge of his innocence since incarceration (a non-happy thought that the Dementors could not take) and went into his Animagus form to slip through his cell door while the Dementors were bringing in his food, swimming across the North Sea after seeing a picture of Pettigrew still in his animal disguise of «Scabbers», the pet rat of Harry’s best friend at Hogwarts Ron Weasley, on a copy of the Daily Prophet given to him by then-Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge. [2]

Second Wizarding War

Albus Dumbledore was the Secret Keeper for 12 Grimmauld Place, the Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, until he died in 1997, [3] thus making all the members of the Order, along with the trio the succeeding Secret Keepers. This forced the Order to abandon it, as they erroneously believed Severus Snape to be a traitor and he knew the location. Later, the trio returned to the house (accepting the risk of a visit from Snape) until they infiltrated the Ministry of Magic, where afterward Yaxley grabbed Hermione as the trio Apparated to 12 Grimmauld Place to escape. They then considered the location permanently compromised. [4]

In 1997 and 1998, the Order of the Phoenix used many safe houses, including Aunt Muriel’s House and Shell Cottage, all of which were under the Fidelius Charm and maintained by various Secret Keepers. [5]

Dangers

Being a Secret Keeper was a very dangerous position to be in; although it was impossible to bewitch or torture the information out of the Secret Keeper, many had in the past been subjected to the Imperius and Cruciatus Curses in others’ attempts to find the secret. [1] It was such a serious and binding enchantment that few would undertake it lightly.

If a Secret Keeper died, all the people already aware of the secret information became Secret Keepers. [4] This would, unfortunately, dilute the effect greatly as more people could pass the information at will.

James and Lilly’s House

Is there a reason why the Potters couldn’t be their own Secret-Keepers? Wouldn’t that have been much safer? 68.51.235.165 18:01, December 20, 2009 (UTC)

The issue I’m really confused about (and which might be a plot hole) is how the Fidelius stopped working at James and Lilly’s house.

In Deathly Hollows, Chapter 16, when Harry is wondering if he’d be able to see his old house, it says:

«He [Harry] was not even sure whether he would be able to see the cottage at all; he did not know what happened when the subjects of a Fidelius Charm died.»

When he finally sees it in the next chapter, it says:

«He could see it; the Fidelius Charm must have died with James and Lily.»

This doesn’t make sense though. «Subjects» would seem to mean the people who had been told of the secret by the secret keeper. But at this point in the book, Wormtail hadn’t died yet, and there were still people alive who had known about the secret: Voldemort and Hagrid (who rescued Harry from the house) at the very least. At the time of James and Lilly’s murders, at least Bathilda and Sirius were also subjects, in addition to James and Lilly themselves. But since Wormtail hadn’t actually been killed by Sirius (and doesn’t die before Harry and Hermione get to Godric’s Hollow), none of those people could have shared the secret. Meanwhile, a sign was erected on the property (with 16 years of writing on it) that said:

«This house, invisible to Muggles, has been left in its ruined state as a monument to the Potters and as a reminder of the violence that tore apart their family.»

So the only way to interpret this is that the house was visible to all since James and Lilly’s death.

It’s not possible that the secret died when James or Lilly died (if, say, they were the ones who casted the fidelius charm) because that would mean that the charm on Grimmauld Palace should have lifted when Dumbledore died, and conflicts with what we’re told about what happens when a secret keeper dies. Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix

Snape

After Dumbledore died Snape would become a secret keeper, along with the other members of the Order, for 12 Grimald place so why cant the Death eaters get in when Harry, Ron & Hermione are hiding? Wouldnt Snape tell them or Voldermort figure out that he is a secret keeper & make him?

Yaxley

Why could Harry, Hermione and Ron not get back to 12 Grimmauld Place when they revealed the secret to Yaxley. As i understand the Fidelius Charm, Harry and Hermione revealed the Black House to Yaxley, but they only told him the place. He was not able to tell others.

Shell Cottage

The Fidelius charm wasn’t placed on Shell Cottage until after the trio escaped and the Weasley family had to go into hiding. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tjb173 (talk • contribs).

It doesn’t say when the charm was placed, but the fact the Fidelius charm was in effect was mentioned after the trip arrived. Mv9435 (talk) 04:37, June 15, 2018 (UTC)

Gryffindor Keeper Ron Weasley defending the hoop

Keeper was a position in the wizarding sport of Quidditch. There was one Keeper per team, and it was their job to guard the three goalposts attempting to stop the other team’s Chasers from scoring. [1] [2] [3] The Keeper also wore the most protection than any other position, which included a helmet, shoulder/chest pads and knee pads. This effectively made them heavier than most of their other team-mates.

Contents

History

The position of the Keeper had existed since at least the 13th century, although the role had changed somewhat over time. The Keeper was essentially a Chaser, with the added responsibilities of guarding the posts. However, with the addition of the scoring zone in 1620, Keepers generally kept inside this area in order to prevent the opposition from scoring. Keepers were only allowed out of this area to head off incoming Chasers. [3]

Traits

Keepers were typically well-built and athletic players who usually stuck close to the goal posts where they could deploy their defensive skills to their fullest capacity. [3]
