40.1 This year I am doing a project on what is important to get a job in Zetland. I have found some relevant data on this subject organised in a table and now I am going to analyse my findin gs.

As it can be seen from the table, there are five main prerequisites while getting a job. Firstly, objective self-assessment is selected by the majority of the respondents (34%). Secondly, a carefully written CV (26%) is followed by the necessity of an active ambitious nature (21%). Another key feature is that an optimistic attitude is chosen by a very small number of the surveyed (5%). That is why this factor is put at the bottom of the tabl e.

It is worth mentioning that a carefully written CV (26%) is twice as popular as communication skills (14%) which shows that

Housework has always been an important part of our lives. I am working on a project to find out what household chores are popular among teenagers in Zetland. I have found some useful data on the given topic in the form of table, to help give my opinion on the subject of the proje ct.

Looking at the details, the most popular household is tidying their bedroom with 81 per cen t. On the contrary, the least popular among them is dog walking with 5 per cen t.

There are considerable differences in household chores among today’s teenagers. The percentage of tidying their bedroom is 16.5 times more than the percentage of dog walking. It is also worth mentioning that vacuuming the floors (25%) is only slightly lower than dusting surfaces (40% ).

40.1 Nowadays a lot of teenagers spend their free time reading books particularly there is a variety of book genres. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out what book genres are popular among teenagers in Zetland. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the table.

According to the data, the teenagers in Zetland have quite a wide range of tastes when it comes to book genres. It is clear, that the vast majority of the respondents enjoy reading adventure novels as well as detective stories (55.4% and 55.3% respectively). Sports stories are also quite popular with the teenage readers (49.2%), whereas romantic novels appear to be at the bottom of the table.

It is worth mentioning that animal stories are two time less preferable than adventure novels. To my mind, books about animals are written mostly for little children, not for teenage readers.

Statistics reveal one problem connected with reading. Obviously, there are no classical books in the table. Thus, teenagers in Zetland prefer reading books for relaxation than broadening their horizons. One solution to this problem is to organize discussing clubs for the adolescents there they can meet professors and theater actors, read together and read serious books. Live communication encourages better than boring lessons.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that reading is significant for teenagers. I hope the adolescents will be able to learn more reading different book genres. (245 words)

40.2 Many people believe that smartphones have become an essential part of modern life. The aim of the project I am working on is to find out what people use their smartphones for in Zetland. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the diagram.

According to the data, there is quite a wide range of reasons when it comes to using smartphones. It is clear, that the vast majority of the respondents enjoy emailing as well as making phone calls (79% and 78% respectively). Surfing the internet is also quite popular with the smartphone users (58%), whereas paying for purchases appears to be at the bottom of the table.

It is worth mentioning that smartphones are used for playing computer games less often than for emailing. To my mind, it is comfortable to be in touch everywhere when it comes to business. At the same time, gaming is the most popular pastimes among teenagers.

One problem that people often face using smartphones is the poor quality of signal in some areas. It is very crucial nowadays due to the internet is necessary for using all options that modern devices provide. One solution to this problem is to create free Wi-Fi zones in public places, such as libraries, railway stations, parks where people can spend their time effectively and gain access to the internet for free.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that smartphones play a significant role in our life. I hope people will use them wisely.

40.1 Today online communication has become an inseparable part of our lives. While doing a project on what social networks are used by teenagers in Zetland for communication, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, Instagram tops the list with 33% of the adolescents in Zetland using it. Snapchat is the second most popular social media platform chosen by 32% of the surveyed. It should be noted that only 3% of the respondents like Twitter.

The polling percentage shows that using Instagram is almost 10 times more popular than Twitter and this is not surprising. Instagram offers such features as liking comments, replying to specific comments, asking questions and taking polls in Stories as well as sending direct messages. Unexpectedly, Facebook also seems to be one of the least preferred social media services with 5% of the surveyed.

Although social media applications seem to be more a friend than a foe, overusing them causes people to spend less time interacting face-to-face and this seems to be a problem. To solve the problem, people should try to meet more often offline. Seeing each other lets people pick up body language and therefore understand one another better.

To conclude, I believe that social media are extremely important for teenagers: they help them study, get entertained, share the latest news, socialize, make new friends and always stay in touch with their families, friends, teachers, etc. (243 words)

40.2 Listening to music has benefits for learning, mental health, and physical well-being. While doing a project on what pieces of classical music people in Zetland can recognize when they hear them, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, the residents of Zetland are well acquainted with the music by Ludwig van Beethoven because 36% of them can easily recognize Fur Elise and 30% can identify Ode to Joy. It can also be seen that very few people know Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov and Clair de Lune by DeBussy with 4% and 2% of the respondents respectively.

The data analysis reveals that Wedding March by Mendelson, recognized by 28% of the surveyed, is only by 2% less famous than Ode to Joy by Beethoven. However, it is surprising that Clair de Lune by DeBussy is the least recognizable piece of music.

Although classical music has been time-tested, it is not favoured by teenagers and hence their emotional intellect does not develop properly. This definitely seems to be a problem. This problem can be solved by introducing compulsory music lessons in high school and by making TV adverts featuring celebrities listening to classical music. This could really encourage younger people to start liking listening to it.

In conclusion, I believe that listening to classical music is really important as its calming effect takes away nervousness, and can help you cope with stress. (244 words)

40.1 Spending free time has always been fun for teenagers. While doing a project on how teenagers in Zetland spend their free time, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, approximately half of all the teenagers in Zetland, that is 47%, choose hanging out with friends as their favourite pastime. Watching movies comes second in popularity with 20% of the surveyed. Surprisingly, only 5% of the respondents like reading the same book to discuss it later, and it is the least preferred free time activity.

It is quite understandable why shopping online is far more preferable: it is convenient, time-saving and fun.

Although modern teenagers are quite active in going out together, they seem to neglect reading and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem local authorities could promote reading in public places like parks or youth centres by involving celebrities into this activity. Thus, reading and discussing could regain their popularity.

In conclusion, I believe that despite the obvious disbalance between the active and passive forms of pastime, spending one’s free time and enjoying it is vital for a teenager’s mind and body. It’s an open secret that both work and play should be balanced. (251 words)

40.2 Nowadays, using social networking sites like Instagram or Facebook has gradually become an inseparable part of teenagers’ lives as a staple means of communication. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland use social networks for, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

Sharing and following news ranks second in popularity with 21% of the surveyed adolescents. Unexpectedly, only 2% of the respondents use social platforms to promote their hobbies and it is the smallest amount.

The statistics analysis demonstrates that attending fan groups, which makes 12%, is six times as popular as promoting hobbies online. At the same time, uploading photos is almost as popular as being a celebrity follower and is only by 1% less popular.

Although the majority of teenagers use social networks for different purposes, none of them has mentioned using social media for learning and it seems to be a problem. One of the solutions could be promoting virtual learning communities where both teachers and learners would share their ideas and experience.

To sum up, I believe that social platforms will never become unpopular, as they provide a great opportunity to socialize, make friends, follow new trends in fashion, take up a hobby, etc. However, it is also important to be careful not to spend too much time on screens — social media are quite addictive. There are people who believe that teenagers lose interest in reading poetry. Others are convinced that children read a lot and that demand to different types of books only grows.

In my opinion, young people don’t read poetry too much nowadays. They have many other alternatives. Take, for example, series of seven epic fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling «Harry Potter». Children throughout the world read the series or at least heard about them from their friends. Moreover, reading isn’t the most popular hobby among kids. Most of them spend time playing computer games or watching movies. So it would be problematic to explain the importance of reading poetry to them.

But there are people who believe that young people read a lot of poetry nowadays. They say that school program gives them access to all the types of books. They are convinced that reading is the main hobby for most of the kids.

I cannot agree with the opinions above as these people fail to understand that poetry books don’t become popular just because teenagers are told to read them at school. Most of them don’t like reading at all. I’m sure that teenagers are mostly interested in other entertainments.

Taking everything into consideration, there are two different points of view on that problem. I believe that reading poetry isn’t that popular among young people because they have many other entertainments.

Video games develop your brain.

There is no doubt that this issue of computer games influence on our brain is quite debatable and people differ in their attitude towards it. Some people consider video games as a positive tool,other say that any game is a real threat.

From my point of view, video games can really help you to develop your brain. Firstly, a great variety of game genres can help with different aspects our mind. There are dozens of logical games which can teach you how to overcome various obstacles using different strategies. It might be useful and helpful if applied in a real life. Secondly, you are able to improve your skills communicating with other players. I believe that Cyber sport develops lots of useful multitasking, analytical thinking and team playing skills. However, there are people who have an opposite point of view. These people consider that video games are completely useless for any kind of brain development. According to them, gaming causes our mind degradation increasing the innate level of aggression. As a result of this, computer games players are not able to handle any real problems and become less intelligent. I cannot agree with these people. According to current researches, there is no real bond between gaming and aggressiveness. Moreover, there are many educational video games which offer you a lot of information and enable to gain any knowledge and skills you need.

To wrap it up, I think it is safe to say that video games develop your brain when it comes to variety and ability to expand your outlook.

Nowadays many people are convinced that extreme sports help to build character. However, there are others who are against these risky activities.

To my way of thinking, doing extreme sport is rather meaningless activity. To start with, it is very dangerous. Many people seriously injure themselves or even die while doing extreme sports. What is more, many psychologists claim that dangerous activities can be the reason of a serious mental illness. People, who like doing extremal things, feel lack of adrenalin in their blood. They do extreme sports because they need to compensate this shortage. Many experts say that passion on extreme sports can become the real addiction.

However, there are people who believe that extreme sports are important for the society. They are convinced that risky kinds of activities help us build a strong character.

Personally, I cannot agree with this opinion. I think that there are many other activities to do, which are not dangerous and help us build character as well as extreme sports. For example, science or politics.

Taking everything into account, I want to say that if you want to build a strong character, you do not need to do exactly extreme sports. There are many other interesting activities to do, which do not put your life in danger.

Many people think that childhood is not only the happiest but also the safest period of human life, and I agree with them.

In my opinion when you are little you are completely protected of any harm thanks for your parents. When we are small, we live without stress, without problems, related with money, work, education and so on. Also we are protected from other people that could do us harm, because our moms and dads will protect us.

But other people suggest that there are a lot of risks even if you are a kid, for example, illnesses. I disagree with them, because any people could get sick, doesn’t matter if it is a child or an adult. Of course I heard that kids have weaker immunity that an adult and in general their organism is weaker, because it’s smaller. But in my point of view, children are even safer in this sense, because they are fed well; they sleep a lot, do not work and don’t have any bad habits, such as smoking or alcohol dependence.

In conclusion I must say that all my childhood memories (as I remember them) are very pleasant and full of joy. I felt healthy and safe, and that is the most important argument as I think. Could be interesting to ask what my parents think about it…

Why online shopping is popular in Zetland

Write 200−250 words.

Use the following plan:

— make an opening statement on the subject of the project;

— select and report 2−3 facts;

— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant;

— outline a problem that can arise with online shopping and suggest a way of solving it;

— conclude by giving your opinion on the role of online shopping in our life.

40.1 There have always been pros and cons of mandatory school uniforms, as some students like wearing it, whereas others prefer an individual look. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland think about school uniform, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, as much as 40% of the adolescents in Zetland enjoy wearing uniform at school. 24% of them have to wear it because it is a school rule. 9% of the respondents consider wearing school clothes old-fashioned.

The data analysis reveals that the number of teenagers (40%) who like wearing school uniform is 4,4 times as large as the number of those who find it outdated. It is not surprising, because wearing school uniform makes students feel like their school is one big team and can even reduce potential for bullying.

Although school uniform is a dress code and is still required by lots of schools, there are always students who struggle with wearing it, and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem school authorities could organize a student design contest to create such an outfit that would satisfy all teenagers’ demands including colour, material and comfort preferences.

To conclude, I believe that wearing school uniform plays a significant role in students’ lives, as it is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a school student. Wearing school uniform is practical, safe and helps learning concentration. (253 words)

40.2 Online shopping is becoming more and more popular as people discover its advantages. While doing a project on why online shopping is popular in Zetland, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

The diagram shows that nearly one-third of the teenage boys and girls in Zetland, that is 32%, choose online shopping because the variety of products is enormous. Convenience of home shopping comes second in popularity with 28% of those polled. It can also be seen that only 6% of the Zetland youngsters prefer cybershopping because they don’t have to queue.

The data analysis reveals that online access to clear information about products, chosen by 12% of the respondents, is twice as popular with the young online customers as the lack of queues. At the same time lower prices are by 10% less preferable than the large assortment of the products available online.

Although online shopping tends to attract more and more customers, there is always a risk of fraud and this seems to be a great problem as one can lose the money paid without getting the desired product. The best solutions to this problem could be shopping at secure sites only and checking the reviews before buying anything even if the offer seems to be a real bargain.

In conclusion, I believe that online shopping will always play a big role in the lives of people who really value their time, because it has lots of benefits including free store-to-door delivery or discounts. (254 words)

What social media sites are popular with teenagers in Zetland

40.1 Animals become endangered and then extinct for a variety of reasons. While doing a project on what causes animal extinction in Zetland, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, as much as 41% of the Zetlanders think that wild habitats destruction is responsible for animal extinction in Zetland. Poaching comes second with 23% of those polled. It can also be seen that only 10% of the surveyed consider global warming to be the reason why animals die out.

The statistics analysis demonstrates that the number of the respondents (41%) who blame natural habitats destruction for animal extinction is almost four times as large as the number of those who think it is the global warming which causes it (10%). It is not surprising, because habitat destruction is one of the biggest threats facing plants and animal species throughout the world.

Although everybody has heard of animal extinction, not everyone has ever tried to contribute to animal protection and this seems to be a problem. One of the solutions could be following the 3-R rule: recycle, reuse, reduce. If everybody did it locally, the situation could change globally, and the environmental pollution could decrease significantly.

In conclusion, I believe that animals also play a critical role in the ecosystems and biospheres that make life on Earth possible for humans. Protecting animals, as well as their habitats, will help safeguard the future for all species, including homo sapiens. (248 words)

40.2 Today social networking sites are an inseparable part of our lives. While doing a project on what social media sites are popular with teenagers in Zetland, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, Facebook tops the list with 42% of the adolescents in Zetland using it. YouTube is the second most popular social media platform chosen by 23% of the surveyed. It should be noted that only 3% of the respondents like Telegram and it is the least preferred social media service.

The polling percentage shows that using Facebook is 12 times as popular as using Telegram, which is not surprising as Facebook is almost twice as old as Telegram and therefore is far more famous. Clearly, using WhatsApp is by 10% more favoured than using TikTok, which is quite explainable: WhatsApp is really convenient for texting at work and business messaging, whereas TikTok just entertains.

Although social media sites seem to be more a friend than a foe, overusing them causes people to spend less time interacting face-to-face and this seems to be a problem. To solve the problem, we should try to meet more often offline. Seeing each other lets people pick up body language and hence understand one another better.

To conclude, I believe that social media are extremely important for teenagers: they help them study, get entertained, share the latest news, socialize, make new friends and always stay in touch with their families, friends, teachers, etc. (252 words)

(244 words)

What modern teenagers in Zetland dream about

Write 200−250 words.

Use the following plan:

— make an opening statement on the subject of the project;

— select and report 2−3 facts;

— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant;

— outline a problem that can arise with realizing one’s dreams and suggest a way of solving it;

40.1 It is understood that academic qualifications alone are not enough to succeed in a job interview and get the dream job, as employers always examine the personality of each candidate very carefully. While doing a project on what is important to get a job in Zetland, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, social skills stand first among the rest with 36%. Leadership skills are considered relatively less important with only 24%. Interestingly, multitasking skills seem to be less required as they make as much as only 5% of the polling percentage.

The data analysis reveals that teamwork skills, chosen by 20% of the surveyed, are four times as preferred as multitasking skills. At the same time, thinking skills with 15% are three times as essential as multitasking skills. Thus, it is obvious that social and leadership skills are considered paramount.

Although it is quite easy nowadays to apply for a job, as there are numerous job-search applications, there is always a problem of how to make your resume more appealing to employers. To solve this problem, it is important to consult an expert who could understand your strengths and weaknesses and build a suitable resume.

I would like to conclude that the increased interest in sociable skills is quite explainable. They enable to communicate more effectively helping to build, maintain and grow relationships with colleagues, clients and new contacts no matter your position, industry or experience level. (250 words)

40.2 Dreams are cherished expectations and ambitions people realize as long as they live. While doing a project on what modern teenagers in Zetland dream about, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, 38% of modern teenagers dream about promotion. Getting academic qualifications comes second with 21% of the surveyed. It can also be seen, that only 10% of teenagers prefer their financial wellbeing and it doesn’t seem to be one of their biggest dreams.

The polling percentage shows that climbing up a career ladder is almost four times as desired as financial wellbeing, and it is a good sign indicating that teenagers prefer work responsibility over money. At the same time, owning real estate is 3% more desirable than getting married, which is quite logical as one should have a house before having a family.

Although dreaming is always wonderful per se, there are two types of people – dreamers and doers. Most people cannot dovetail both these and that is a problem. Dream without action will never yield results. To solve the problem, a dreamer should pen down their dreams and prepare a roadmap to fulfill them.

To sum up, modern teenagers’ dreams are realistic and achievable. Everyone wants to live in their own house, have a family and lovely children, be successful at work and afford not only basic necessities, but travelling and exploring the world as well. As it is said, where there is a will, there is a way. (254 words)

40.1 People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. While doing a project on what motivates people in Zetland to do volunteering, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, 45% of the young volunteers in Zetland are motivated just by helping others. As much as 23% of the surveyed do volunteering to gain knowledge or to develop some new skills. Broadening experience is chosen by 8% of the respondents and thus proves to be the least popular motivation behind volunteering.

The data analysis reveals that volunteering as a way of socializing, chosen by 13% of the polled, is only by 2% more popular than building confidence and self-esteem, favoured by 11% of the teenagers in Zetland. It is not surprising, because mixing socially with others and boosting self-assurance and self-respect are closely interrelated and almost equally important for self-development.

Although volunteerism is per se doing something noble and serving those who need care and affection, it can be time-consuming and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem, one should look for volunteer opportunities that require only a few hours of spare time each month, otherwise school or university studies will be neglected.

In conclusion, I believe that volunteering is really important for society as it is an extremely rewarding experience, giving people a chance to make an impact on the lives of others, whether directly or indirectly. Besides, volunteering provides both emotional and psychological benefits. (250 words)

40.2 Shopping is both a routine and a pleasure and there is hardly anyone who doesn’t like it. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland spend their money on, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, 34% of the teenage boys and girls in Zetland spend their money on clothing and footwear. Technology is the second popular category with as much as 29% of the respondents. Another noticeable fact is that only 8% of the surveyed mention spending money on entertainment.

The statistics analysis demonstrates that spending money on clothes and shoes, chosen by 34% of those polled, is twice as popular as spending money on travelling. Surprisingly, entertainment costs are at the bottom of the list and are by 4% less admired than spending money on personal care.

Although spending money is an exciting activity, not all teenagers can spend their money wisely and that seems to be a problem. Creating a spending plan could be one of the solutions to the problem. A teenage spender should write down all the sources of income they make including pocket money and part-time or summer job wages and analyze their expenses. This could allow young shopaholics to manage their cash responsibly.

In conclusion, I’m convinced that shopping is really important for any adolescent: at this stage of life it teaches young people to become moneywise, satisfies their social needs, helps to create good consumer habits and finally it is really fun. (253 words)

Writing task 40: variant 10

Task 40

Imagine that you are doing a project on what part-time jobs are popular among teenagers in Zetland. You have found some data on the subject – the results of the opinion polls (see the bar chart below).

Comment on the data in the bar chart and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200-250 words.

Use the following plan:

– make an opening statement on the subject of the project;

– select and report 2–3 facts;

– make 1–2 comparisons where relevant;

– outline a problem that can arise with teenage employment and suggest a way of solving it;

– conclude by giving your opinion on the importance of part-time jobs for teenagers.

A part-time job can have an adverse effect on teenagers’ academic study (academic performance).

Students have (experience) difficulty in balancing (juggling) their part-time work and study.

Working teenagers may come to school tired, have little time to see their teachers after school for special help, and avoid extracurricular activities, hence missed opportunities.

It is important to find a flexible job or a job in an easily accessible area.

It is advisable that teenagers learn about time management, schedule beforehand and take note of their deadlines (key dates) so as not to fall behind.

Prioritize and be realistic, since time is a limited resource.

Avoid time wasting. Work out the best routine.

A teenager tries to juggle many other activities while doing a part-time job, which may be a cause of health problems.

Take a break if things get too stressful.

Eat right and get enough sleep to minimize negative effects.
