Loki: The Story of the Trickster God
Who is Loki? Many people are familiar with the Norse god Loki from modern depictions, but what does Norse Mythology say about the identity of Loki?
Æsir or Jötunn, friend or foe, Loki is many things, often at the same time. Read on to find out more about Norse mythology’s most mischievous god.
The identity of Loki
Once in a lecture on Viking artefacts, my professor asked us why we have not yet found any statues that are thought to portray the god Loki. After a short discussion, she provided her own theory:
“Loki is a chaos god. You wouldn’t pray to Loki; you would pray to the other gods to keep Loki away.”
While Loki may not have been favoured among the pagan Scandinavians, his popularity has increased in recent years along with a renewed interest in Norse mythology (something no doubt helped by Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of the character in the Marvel movies).
While modern depictions of Loki can vary from the sinister in Neil Gaiman’s American Gods to the misunderstood in Joanne Harris’ Runemarks, they generally follow the same blueprint. Loki tends to be portrayed as mischievous and self-serving, yet lovable and charming. He is also often framed as an antagonist, although he is rarely a stereotypical “bad guy”.
However, while Loki’s characterisation is consistent in popular culture, there is very little consistent about Loki in Norse mythology.
Loki: a trickster God
In Norse mythology, Loki is best known as the trickster god. A lot of the time, he uses his cunning to help the Æsir out of trouble – other times, he’s the reason they’re in trouble in the first place.
However, other than being a trickster, it is difficult to say exactly what else Loki is. He is both Æsir and Jötunn. He is generally male – and sometimes female. The Æsir are infuriated by him and dependent on him. He helps the Æsir and marches against them in Ragnarok.
Confused? Don’t worry – so are we. Strap in – this is going to be a bumpy ride!
Æsir or Jötunn?
While there are lots of characters within Norse mythology, the two main groups are the Æsir (the gods) and the Jötnar (often translated as “giants”). The Æsir and the Jötnar have a literal love-hate relationship: they are just as likely to fight as they are to marry and/or have children.
When they do have children, this union is generally between male Æsir and female Jötnar, and even Odin himself has a Jötunn for a mother. Despite this, he is still classified as an Æsir as Norse mythology is patrilineal, which means that bloodlines run through the father.
Like Odin, Loki is also the child of an Æsir and a Jötunn – with a marked difference. Loki’s father is Fárbauti, a Jötunn, and his mother is Laufey, who is thought to be an Æsir (though this isn’t specified).
Therefore, Loki should technically be classified as a Jötunn. However it’s not quite as simple as that.

In Viking times, it was common for children’s surnames to be made by taking their father’s first name and adding “son” or “daughter” onto the end. This practice is still common in Iceland today. Loki however takes his mother’s first name for his surname, “Laufeysson” (lit. son of Laufey), instead of his father’s.
Furthermore, in Lokasenna (“The Flyting of Loki”), he mentions that he is blood brothers with Odin:
Loki spake:
9. “Remember, Othin, in olden days
That we both our blood have mixed;
While we don’t know why he received his mother’s name or how the blood pact with Odin happened, these factors suggest that Loki chooses his allegiance to the Æsir over the Jötnar, in spite of his bloodline – even though this choice eventually changes.
Was Loki male or female?
Loki’s parentage is not the only instance of him defying the gender norms of Norse mythology. His own gender changes throughout the stories.
In both myths and popular culture (as well as in this blog post), Loki is generally described as being male. But this is not always the case.
In Þrymskviða (or Thrymskvida, “the Lay of Thrym”), Thor and Loki must pretend to be Freyja and her handmaiden in order to get Thor’s hammer Mjölnir back from a Jötunn king named Thrym.
When Thor is in disguise, the text keeps his male pronouns. However, when Loki is in disguise, the text switches to female pronouns, suggesting that his transformation into a handmaiden is much more… thorough:
20. Then Loki spake, the son of Laufey:
“As thy maid-servant thither I go with thee;
We two shall haste to the giants’ home.”
26. Hard by there sat the serving-maid wise,
So well she answered the giant’s words:
“From food has Freyja eight nights fasted,
So hot was her longing for Jotunheim.”
In addition, while Loki fathers the majority of his children, he also mothers one of them. In one of the stories told in Gylfaginning (“The Beguiling of Gylfi”), Loki turns himself into a female horse in order to lure the stallion Svadilfari away from his work.
When Loki returns, he is pregnant and he later gives birth to an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir, who becomes Odin’s steed.
Therefore, while Loki is often in a male form, he is not bound to a single gender like the other Æsir – nor to the gender norms that follow.
Friend or foe?
As mentioned at the beginning, Loki is a god of mischief and often causes trouble for the Æsir, even when he’s on their side. For example, he cuts off Sif’s hair for seemingly no reason other than it amuses him.
However, he always fixes his mistakes, often at an added benefit to the Æsir. To replace Sif’s hair, Loki has the Dwarves make her new hair out of pure gold – as well as a spear (Gugnir) and a ring (Draupnir) for Odin, a hammer (Mjölnir) for Thor, and a boar (Gullinborsti) and ship (Skidbladnir) for Freyr.
Loki is also frequently called upon to help the Æsir when he hasn’t done anything wrong. In Skáldskaparmál (“The Language of Poetry”), the Jötunn Skadi travels to Asgard to avenge her father, Thjazi, who was killed by the Æsir.
After some negotiations, she agrees to accept compensation for his death instead – and one of the terms is that the Æsir have to make her laugh.
In the end, Loki succeeds by means of a goat, some rope and his own *ahem* extremities. The Æsir rarely ask this level of sacrifice from each other and barely acknowledge what Loki does for them.
However, throughout the myths, Loki gradually changes from an ally to an enemy. In Lokasenna, he storms into a feast held by the Æsir and insults them one by one, only leaving when Thor arrives and threatens him. In Gylfaginning, he tricks the blind god Höðr into killing Baldr and then stops his release from Hel by refusing to cry for him.
By the time of Ragnarok, it is clear that Loki is no friend of the Æsir, as he leads the army of the dead out of Hel into battle against them. However, whether he was always destined to be their enemy or whether he was pushed into this role due to how the Æsir treated him is up for debate.
Father of victims or father of monsters?
Of all Loki’s children, the three he fathers with the Jötunn Angrboda are the most monstrous: Fenrir, the giant wolf, Jörmungand, the world serpent, and Hel, who rules over the realm of the same name in Niflheim, where all those who die of sickness or old age go.

While these three technically have an Æsir father and a Jötunn mother, they are not counted among the Æsir. In fact, two of them lead to the death of two important Æsir: Fenrir kills Odin, and Jörmungand and Thor kill each other.
However, much like their father, it is unclear whether these three were destined to be the downfall of the Æsir – or if they became that way because of the Æsir.
In Gylfaginning, it is said that when Odin found out about Loki’s children, he “kastaði” (literally “threw or cast”) Jörmungand into the sea and Hel into Niflheim. Even Fenrir was originally a friend of the Æsir and lived among them in Asgard – before they became fearful of his size and bound him, putting a sword in his mouth so he couldn’t bite.
Did Loki father monsters? Or did the Æsir create monsters?
Hero or villain?
So we come to the final question: “Is Loki a hero or a villain?”
We know that Loki becomes one of the main antagonists of the Æsir – but that in itself does not mean that he is a villain. According to the Oxford English dictionary, the word “antagonist” means “A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary”. The Æsir are Loki’s main opponents – and by all accounts, their behaviour is pretty terrible. Not only do they treat both Loki and his children badly, but they frequently lie, cheat, steal and kill – often for their own interests.
Furthermore, it is clear that Loki, due to his love of mischief, is a god of chaos – but that does not make him automatically bad either. Chaos is bad in Norse mythology because it goes against the order set by the Æsir. However, they do not keep order because it is good – they keep order because it benefits them.
Therefore, whether Loki is a hero or villain depends on your perspective of the Æsir. To find the answer, I think we should instead ask: “Are the Æsir heroes or villains”?
It’s complicated
So, what is Loki? The short answer is: we don’t know. We can say that he is a trickster, but other than that, it’s difficult to put any definite labels on his identity. Perhaps this is what makes him such a good trickster in the first place!
As with most things concerning Norse mythology, it’s difficult to gain any exact answers from the source texts. Loki’s identity will therefore probably differ from person to person, depending on how you view both Loki and the Æsir.
Ultimately, when it comes to Loki, there is only one thing we know for sure: it’s complicated.

I have long been fascinated by Norse myth and Sagas, so the more the merrier for me. You uncover things I have not imagined.
Something else you might delve into is Norse science – for instance, how did they use the Sunstone to navigate – hard to believe they took those vessels across the Atlantic Ocean. I have seen the ships in Oslo – really hard to imagine those with their minimal freeboard in a bad storm…
My daughter lives in Norway, so your blog/newsletter helps me imagine the life she has. And, I have had the privilege to visit – lucky me.
Americans are very likely to portray Loki as some kind of quirky Norse Satan. This is not the case. It is just that there are religious fanatics in America, including particularly really nasty ones who caused the genocide of the Native American religion, and anything not Christian is Satan and that’s all they know.
They’re taught about Good and Evil without understanding it philosophically.
Norse mythology, is not about good and evil. It is about chaos and order. Much like the ideas of science today, the world is created out of chaos. Between the two extremes of Fire and Ice. It’s like that video game “Primal”. Chaos and Order both have to exist, but they also always have to be in balance. Of course in the video game, Chaos is perceived as evil, and Order as good. I however, consider myself a creature of chaos. Order is petty and manmade. Chaos is divine. There’s even a scientific theory, don’t ask me what it is, called “Chaos theory.”
Norse mythology has Giants, Dwarves, Elves, and Monsters. We shouldn’t ask why are there Giants, we should ask why are there Gods?
Giants are more powerful than the gods and older. The sky is thought to be a Giant’s skull, the stars holes in that skull, like living under an egg shell.
Perhaps at first the Norse had only these Giants, Dwarves, Elves, and Monsters. Perhaps it was contact with alien cultures that led to the creation of the Gods.
The Norse had plenty of that.
Of course it is impossible to know.
The idea that the earth is the body of a dead or sleeping Giant is prevalent in England as well. At least, I heard about it in one book I read, called “Albion’s Dream”. It was pretty good.
Before Christianity and Roman ideas of Gods, the land didn’t have Gods, but it did have an idea of magic of some kind.
The Norse especially had magic.
Despite Loki killing Balder, I don’t see him as evil. He’s definitely the most entertaining. And the mystery in his pants is one of the most entertaining things in mythology. A being who is both male and female at the same time is truly powerful. Who knows both sides of that coin. This is the most important part. He is both mother and father. It is not some pretend game, it is real with Loki. Whatever he’s got under his shorts swings both ways. Who knows what it even looks like.
As a being of chaos, maybe the lack of representation isn’t because of their distaste for Loki, but because he is too strange and powerful a being to be represented. He’s a shapeshifter, maybe his form is fluid.
I’m no scholar, but I was always told that Loki was merely sly, and not evil, so him constantly being portrayed as a villain by Marvel kind of irked me.
Though I am an American now, part of my heritage is from Finland. Also Scotland, Russia, Galitzeya, and Romania.
I would also like to say about Loki, it is funny that he is portrayed now as looking like Jim Morrison. “Indians scattered on the highway bleeding, ghosts crowd the boy’s fragile eggshell mind”. This is one of the most poetic and haunting lyrics from the song “The End” by “The Doors”. Perhaps it is more than coincidence.

Who is Loki?
Loki is a deity belonging to the Nordic Pantheon. Companion of Odin and Thor (with the former he forged, in ancient times, a blood brotherhood bond), he presents himself as a very particular figure whose main characteristic is an ambiguous duality.

The writings recall him as a demon enemy of the cosmic order, an evil and perfidious deceiver, but, at the same time, he is sometimes remembered as an ingenious inventor and sometimes as the one who helps the gods through trying times.
The myth of Loki: myth and origins
He belongs to the Asi lineage, however, his family and his offspring are related to evil demons, especially giants. He is the son of the giant Fàrbauti and of the goddess Laufey (or Nàl) and this reveals a first aspect of his dichotomy as in his person the aspects of both races coexist: the evil of the giants and the commitment of the gods in maintaining the cosmic order from Laufey.
In fact, Loki’s misdeeds are not ending in themselves, but are necessary to maintain balance in the cosmic order: only when the “Twilight of the Gods” (Ragnarok) comes will he be able to give free rein to his evil side to guide the forces of evil against the gods.
With the giantess Angroboða, he fathered three children. Hel, the terrible guardian of the underworld. Fenrir, the cosmic wolf enemy of the gods. And finally, Jormungand (or also Miðgarðsormr), the serpent of Miðgarðr, which rests in the ocean wrapped around the earth.

With the goddess Sigyn, he had his sons Narfi and Vàli, who are probably the only sons of Loki who have nothing to do with the forces of evil as they are children of sincere and faithful love.
As the bringer of evil on Earth, Loki is also remembered as the father of witches. In fact, it is said that he had found a half-cooked woman’s heart among the glowing embers of a bonfire, and eating it he was impregnated, giving life to witches. This was not Loki’s last pregnancy, in fact, the god is the father of Sleipnir, the magic eight-legged horse of Odin with runes engraved on his teeth, which the god, transformed into a filly, had from the stallion Svadilferi.
Loki has the ability to transform at will. In the poems, we find him in the form of a fly, flea, hawk, salmon, or seal. This is due to the knowledge and practice of that magic called Seiðr which for males entails impotence and homosexual behavior.
Here is explained the pregnancies of Loki whose duality involves the coexistence of male and female attitudes in his person: it is in fact known the antipathy that the gods feel towards Loki for his way of “lying like a woman”.

He is a very ancient god; we find him mentioned in two myths (The Rapture of Iðunn and Sigurðr and the Nibelungs) together with Odin and Hœnir. They represent the triad that gave life to man from a tree trunk in The Fortune Teller’s Prediction.
In this myth, together with Odin and Hœnir, another god named Loður is mentioned who gave men warmth and good looks. Later it was hypothesized that the name Loður is nothing more than an ancient variation of the name Loki: this would identify Loki as a sort of creator and civilizing god, as well as a fire deity (in fact the ancient Scandinavian word ‘logi’ means flame).
Above all, Loki embodies the principle of evil inherent in creation itself, necessary for the existence of the cosmos which is based on a balance of opposite principles. He is identified as the poison of existence, possessor of the principle of evil, but to preserve himself and its cause paradoxically he is forced to defend the principle of good.
Among the many myths that see him as a protagonist, the most important are:
This can be considered in fact as the last of his misdeeds: Loki, captured by the gods, is forced to observe his son Vali who, while transformed into a wolf, tears his brother Narfi to pieces.
Later with the guts of the latter, Loki is tied to three rocks and a snake that spits poison from the mouth is placed on top of him. Meanwhile Sigyn tries to alleviate the suffering of her beloved by collecting the snake’s poison with a basin to avoid burning the god, but every time she goes away to empty the full container, the poison drips on Loki’s face causing violent spasms that make the earth tremble.

He will be condemned to this torture until the day of Ragnarok comes when he will be freed from the serpent of Miðgarðr and will lead the armies of evil against those who have condemned him: the gods of Asgarðr.

In modern times, Loki has often been compared to the figure of Satan. This is incorrect since he is still interested in preserving the cosmic order, while Satan is a fierce rival of that order.
Furthermore, it is widely believed that Loki is the adopted son of Odin and half-brother of Thor with whom he contends for the throne of Asgarðr. This belief has been spread by the various novels, films, and comics that have seen the Nordic god as a protagonist, but as we have already said previously, Loki is an ancient god who even belongs to the triad that gave life to men and is also the blood brother of the godfather Odin.

What are Loki’s symbols?
The snake: The snake is a symbol of transformation as it sheds its skin. Plus, in Norse mythology, Jormungand is a huge sea serpent closely related to the god Loki: he is in fact his son, generated by this deity with the giant Angrboða.
Jormungand – also often called Jörmungandr (literally “cosmically powerful demon”), Jörmungand or Miðgarðsormr (literally “Serpent of Miðgarðr”, the snake of Midgard) – is thus the scaled brother of the legendary wolf Fenrir and of Hel, the queen of the dead (also known as Hela or Hella).

The spider: The spider is a symbol of crafting a web, like one of lies and hoaxes Loki created. He shares with the spider a creative function, but also an evil one, which is revealed in the myth of Loki who builds a fishing net, similar to a spider’s web.

It consists of a prayer addressed to God Loki who is asked for justice and revenge for the wrongs suffered. So try to judge judiciously if the punishment you want to throw is really fair.

How Loki’s Curse is performed
Take some free time. Find a quiet place where no one can disturb you.
Prepare everything you need for the curse.
Once ready, first engrave the name of the god Loki on the black candle, anoint it with opium oil and then charge it in his name with your energy (for the moment, think not about the purpose of the ritual, but about the god Loki and to its qualities to better charge the candle).
Light incense and candle, and begin the evocation by saying these words:
“”To my enemy who tried to defeat me,
to my enemy who betrayed me,
to my enemy who has done me harm,
to my enemy who has stolen my peace of mind.
In the name of God Loki, I reveal your untruth.
May your words and oaths be ignored and not believed.

The evocation is over.
It is advisable to repeat the prayer for several days so that the god Loki can accept your request and help you in revenge.

What is Loki the god of in Norse mythology
In Norse mythology, Loki is the god associated with trick, lie and fire. He was the son of jötunn Fárbauti and Laufey; and sworn brother of Asgardian lord god Odin, despite being much younger than him. He was treacherous, cunning, verbally abusive, and he often quarreled with other deities. As one of the most important deities in Norse mythology, he played a key role in the Ragnarök.
Loki was an excellent shape-shifter and magician. In a series of events he appeared in different forms, including trout, mare, seal, fly and old lady. Loki’s relationship with other deities varied from event to event. Sometimes he helped them while sometimes treated them badly. The positive relationship between Loki and deities ended after the death of Baldr. So to speak, in Norse mythology Loki was the deity who had the most nicknames, including the god of roguery, shape-shifter, tricker, sky walker and air traveler. As he often did tricks, he was called the god of tricks; and he was also regarded as the god of wisdom, because he helped deities with his wit. But he caused the Ragnarök, and thus was considered evil.
Who was Loki?
Loki was smart and cunning. Despite being a jötunn (the enemy of all deities), he became sworn brother of Odin and a member of the Asgardian gods. He was half good and half evil at first, or he did not do evil intentionally. He helped deities a lot with his wit; played tricks on some deity but soon made peace with him/her. For example, he shaved off Sif’s golden hair and recovered it soon after; assisted Thiazi abducting Idun and rescued her later. But following his murder of Baldr, Odin and Frigga’s son, the deities saw him as evil and drove him out of Asgard.
In early time, Loki often helped the deities, like deceiving a giant into building the wall surround Asgard and giving birth to the eight-foot horse Sleipnir. He was related to many mythic items. Odin’s spear Gungnir and golden ring Draupnir, Freyr’s ship Skidbladnir and mount Gullinborsti, Sif’s golden hair as well as Thor’s hammer Mjölnir, were all made by dwarves under Loki’s request or won by Loki in the bet with dwarves, and then given to deities as the compensation for his tricks.
The children of Loki
Loki’s wife Sigyn was very loyal to him, but he had an affair. Loki and female jötunn Angrboða had three children: monstrous wolf Fenrir, the Midgard serpent Jörmungandr and ruler of Helheim Hela.
The status of fire god
Loki was once one of the Asgardian gods, but both his parents were jötnar, so were his brothers and sisters. Loki and lord god Odin became sworn brothers very long time ago. For this reason, he also became one of the Asgardian deities.
Loki was imposing, handsome and noble. At first his pranks were all good-natured, but later he turned unscrupulous due to the repulsion from deities. Thus he became perverse and went rogue. In the meantime, he was very good at swindling and trick-playing. His misbehavior brought a lot of trouble to Asgard and was really a headache for deities. Nonetheless, he often solved deities’ problems with his wit and stratagem. Therefore, Loki was an important figure in Asgard, although the deities quite disliked him. Among the deities, Heimdallr and Tyr disliked Loki very much, and even turned angry when they saw Loki. Heimdallr is often referred to as “the nemesis of Loki”.
Different from other Asgardian deities, Loki was obviously not a brave warrior, neither did he have an admirable weapon. One good deed he did was helping rescuing a farmer’s child from a giant with his wit. His greatest skill was calling white black and chopping logic with his glib tongue. When the real danger came, he either became a trout and jumped into the river, or just ran away. To do so, he got himself a pair of shoes which enabled him to travel long distances fast and easily.
The origin and role of Loki in Norse mythology has long been the focus of controversy in academia. He is described as a “deceiver” and believed to be as wise as Odin. Sometimes Loki is also considered to be the god of fire, who could do good things and evil things as well. But in fact, he never performed any function related to fire, nor did he saw himself the god of fire. In Norse mythology, he was more of the god of tricks acting with wit.
The possible reason why he was associated with fire is that his name “Loki” is believed to mean “flame”. This name is also thought to be derived from “Logi”, but it is not yet proved by any actual reasonable linguistic basis. “Logi” was also the name of a jötunn. In Norse mythology, the jötunn Logi was the incarnation of fire, and he had had an eating competition with Loki.
The punishment of Loki
Loki received the most severe punishment after his murder of Baldr. Odin turned Vali into a wolf, made him bite his son Narfi to death, and then used Narfi’s entrails to bind Loki. He also called up a huge serpent, with venom constantly dribbling down from its horrible tusks onto Loki’s face.
Only Loki’s wife Sigyn felt sympathy for him. She sat beside the bound Loki, used a cup to catch the venom, so as to avoid venom dribbling onto her husband’s face. But every time the cup was full, she had to stand up and pour the venom. At this moment, Loki’s face would be corroded by venom. In great horror and pain, Loki trembled and burst into tears, even caused an earthquake.
And so Loki waited to revenge on Odin till the Ragnarök when he broke loose.
The death of Loki
Loki fought the final battle during the Ragnarök. Loki’s opponent was the guardian of Bifrost Heimdallr. He looked extremely horrible as a result of his long-term torture; his face turned deadly pale; his hair and beard erected due to his anger and looked like horns. Heimdallr soon beheaded Loki with his sword, but Loki’s head bounced up, hit Heimdallr’s chest and killed him. As a result, Loki and his nemesis killed one another.
What is loki the god of
Loki is a god in Norse mythology who is often simply described as the ‘trickster’ god for his love of playing pranks on both his fellow gods and his or their opponents. Sworn brother of Odin and often the one to dig the other gods out of inconveniently deep holes, Loki’s name nonetheless has many negative connotations due to his deceitful nature and especially the hand he had in the death of the god Baldr, thus setting in motion the coming of the Ragnarök (the ‘final destiny of the gods’ in which the world is destroyed). With no cult attached to him and no clear function in Viking Age belief, yet being one of only three gods who headlines in more than one myth (the other two being Odin and Thor), Loki takes up a unique spot in the Norse pantheon.
The sources
The richest amount of information on Loki can be mined from Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda (c. 1220 CE, one of our main sources on Norse mythology) – albeit seen through the goggles of a 13th-century CE Icelandic mythology geek from a time Christianity had already taken hold of the island. Loki also pops up in some very early skaldic poems (Viking Age, pre-Christian poetry mainly heard at courts by kings and their retinues) composed between the late 9th and early 11th centuries CE as well as in the Lokasenna and the Þrymskviða poems from the Poetic Edda (c. 1270 CE, but containing material which probably dates back to before the 10th century CE in the Viking Age proper). However, he is loud in his absence from arguably some of the oldest poems from this work, the Vafþrúðnismál and the Grímnismál. Coupled with this, Loki’s similarly surprising non-existence in Saxo Grammaticus’ Gesta Danorum (‘Deeds of the Danes’, composed in the early 13th century CE), a Danish work which otherwise extensively discusses Norse mythology, might indicate that Loki was more of a regional feature rather than being omnipresent throughout the Germanic World. Indeed, sources on Loki are limited to the northern Germanic regions and Loki himself has no direct parallel in broader Germanic mythology (while a lot of the other Norse gods do).

Tying in with the fact that Loki had no cult attached to him, there is really no proper archaeological record featuring Loki. What we do have relies mostly on guesswork regarding the identity of figures depicted on stones or artefacts; the most convincing one is an image on the Snaptun stone carved around 1000 CE showing a face with stitched-up lips which reminds of a story preserved in the Prose Edda where Loki’s lips are sewn up. Although this stone was found and is on display in Denmark, the stone itself originates from Norway or western Sweden.
Family & main features
In terms of family, Snorri’s Prose Edda has Loki down as son of the giant Fárbauti and a mother named Laufey or Nál. Býleistr and Helblindi were his brothers, and with his wife Sigyn he had a son named Nari or Narfi. Not satisfied, Loki fathered three more (and rather unusual) children by the giantess Angrboda: the wolf Fenrir, the Midgard Serpent who coils around the world, and Hel, goddess of the Underworld (who unlike the first two is likely a later Christian addition rather than an original component of Viking Age mythology). There is even a strange tale in which Loki shape-shifts into a mare and gives birth to the eight-legged horse Sleipnir fathered by the giant stallion Svaðilfari.

Shape-shifting is actually one of the recurring motifs in tales about Loki, being recorded by various sources as changing into a hawk; a fly and a flea; as well as water-based creatures like a salmon and a seal; and even switching gender to become a young maiden, an old hag, and the above mentioned mare. Loki is also often mentioned in connection with air, wind and flight. He is said to have been impulsive, with a quick but often malicious tongue and a wily, cunning sort of wisdom, and Snorri describes him as ‘beautiful and comely to look upon, evil in spirit, very fickle in habit.’ (Gylfaginning, 33).
The Ugly – Loki as enemy of the gods
The most negative side of Loki’s reputation is first and foremost due to his involvement in the beloved god Baldr’s death. After the goddess Frigg, mother of Baldr, makes her son invulnerable by making everything except for the weak mistletoe swear not to harm him, the gods have fun shooting at Baldr. While arrows bounce off of him left right and centre leaving not so much as a scratch, Loki decides to take stirring the pot to a terrible level by handing the blind god Hodr – Baldr’s brother – an arrow made of mistletoe, which Hodr unintentionally kills his brother with.

In the Prose Edda the god Hermodr then undertakes a desperate journey into the Underworld to ask its mistress, Hel, to let Baldr return. He is however thwarted by Loki, who personally sees to it that Hel’s requirements are not met, and although Loki is then captured by the other gods and tied to a rock with a poison-oozing snake suspended above him, his wife Sigyn catches the worst of it in a bowl. Only when she leaves to empty it does the poison sting his face, making him tremble so much that the earth quakes.
Baldr’s death and the trickery that caused it disrupts the harmony among the gods and paves the way for the coming of Ragnarök, in which the gods fight the encroaching forces of the Underworld and the world is eventually engulfed in fire and destroyed. Loki has become the enemy of the gods, and even fights on Team Underworld and leads one of the Giant armies in battle. On the one hand, Loki’s role in these events can be interpreted as that of a catalyst knocking over the domino stones, thus causing the end of the world. …most important expression of the idea of the collapse of the world of the gods. The gods could not prevent Baldr’s killing, because their own circle incorporated an element of deceit and destruction, personified by Loki… (208).
The Bad – Loki’s malicious tongue
The Lokasenna (‘Loki’s blasphemies’) poem from the Poetic Edda lays any doubt about Loki’s tongue to rest. As all of the gods are drinking in the hall of Ægir the giant, Loki, after killing a servant but being allowed back into the hall because he is Odin’s blood brother, goes on an insult-spree in which he slanders and accuses many of those present. Loki appears to enjoy getting reactions out of people, also in a practical way by setting events in motion, as seen in the Þórsdrápa (written in Iceland at the end of the 10th century CE). This poem clearly spells out Loki’s manipulative side; it relates how Loki tricks Thor into butting heads with the giant Geirrǫðr – which luckily ends up releasing Thor’s strength and ending well for him (and less so for the giant).
Taking it down a notch from this evil role, a common thread throughout many other myths surrounding Loki seems to be his malicious intentions but otherwise not extremely harmful outcomes, as well as his willingness to help solve the problems he has created. One good example is that he ‘. once cut off all of Sif’s hair out of pure malice. ‘ but then has the black-elves make Sif hair of gold before Thor can break all of his bones (Skáldskaparmál, 33). Moreover, as further compensation for his actions he competes with a dwarf to have weapons and jewels made for Odin, Freyr and Thor, but loses and has his mouth sewn up by the dwarf, indicating he could not keep his evil mouth shut.
The Good? – Loki the hero
Despite Loki’s above-mentioned track record, however, there is actually a fairly broad silver lining. For one, his trickster-abilities are also used to get the gods out of sticky situations, like in the myth of the master builder. It relays that after Asgard was destroyed home renovation is called for in the shape of a giant, who among others demands the goddess Freyja as payment. Cunning Loki plays a trick to delay the giant causing him to miss his deadline, after which he throws a hissy fit and threatens the gods, but is slain by Thor, leaving Freyja free. (Gylfaginning, 42).

What is more, in the story surrounding Skadi, daughter of the giant Thjazi, known from the 9th-century CE Haustlǫng tale which also features in Snorri’s work, Loki is actually the hero. Thjazi ends up getting killed by the Æsir (the main family of the gods), and after realising his daughter Skadi is now very angry and ready to take revenge they grant her compensation; she chooses one of the Æsir, Njordr, to be her husband, and also demands that the gods must make her laugh (thinking that this is impossible in her current state). The Skáldskaparmál records the outcome:
Then Loki did this: he tied a cord to the beard of a goat, the other end being about his own genitals, and each gave way in turn, and each of the two screeched loudly; then Loki let himself fall onto Skadi’s knee, and she laughed. Thereupon reconciliation was made with her on the part of the Æsir. (1).
In fact, some of the earliest poems in which Loki appears, such as the Ynglingatal, Haustlǫng, Húsdrápa and Þórsdrápa from the late 9th through early 11th centuries CE, show him on multiple occasions as a friend of the gods. His problem-solving antics also seem to stem from the relatively older sources, becoming gradually more evil when we reach the later sources such as Snorri’s in which Baldr’s death takes centre stage. Loki may originally have been more of a hero, playing important parts in the stories not just in a negative way but also relating to the helpful side of his trickery.
The question of how to stick all of these pieces of the puzzle back together in a way that might do justice to Loki as he existed in Viking Age mythology remains tricky (and might require Loki’s own skills). William Sayers attempts an explanation where Loki is seen as an inventive fixer who unlocks bogged-down situations with his dynamic words and actions, while another aspect of his character centres around him being the ‘blamer’, accusing and judging people around him. His harshness could be due to him being an outsider (his parents were probably giants), all the while staying part of the divine family through his sworn brother Odin. (Sayers, Article 2). Either way, with many different facets of Loki’s character shining through in all the various stories, we may just have to accept that his elusive nature is what defines him the most.
