What is the Mass Media??
Mass media
Mass media (that is, the press, the radio and television) play an important role in the life of society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. Mass media mould public opinion. Millions of people in their spare time watch TV and read newspapers.
Everybody can find there something interesting for him. On the radio one can hear music, plays, news and various discussions or commentaries of current events. Multiple radio or TV games and films attract a large audience. Newspapers are used in different ways, but basically they are read.
There is a lot of advertisment on mass media. Some of the TV and radio stations and newspapers are owned by different corporations. The owners can advertise whatever they choose.
But it is hardly fair to say that mass media do not try to raise cultural level of the people or to develop their artistic taste. Mass media brings to millions of homes not only entertaiment and news but also cultural and educational programs.
There are more then six TV channels and lot’s of radio stations and newspapers now in the Russian Federation.
Mass media are tools for the transfer of information, concepts, and ideas to both general and specific audiences. They are important tools in advancing public health goals. Communicating about health through mass media is complex, however, and challenges professionals in diverse disciplines.
Using mass media can be counterproductive if the channels used are not audience-appropriate, or if the message being delivered is too emotional, fear arousing, or controversial. Undesirable side effects usually can be avoided through proper formative research, knowledge of the audience, experience in linking media channels to audiences, and message testing.
WHAT IS MASS MEDIA
Mass media is media which is intended for a large audience. It may take the form of broadcast media, as in the case of television and radio, or print media, like newspapers and magazines. Internet media can also attain mass media status, and many mass media outlets maintain a web presence to take advantage of the ready availability of Internet in many regions of the world. Some people also refer to the mass media as the “mainstream media,” referencing the fact that it tends to stick to prominent stories which will be of interest to a general audience, sometimes ignoring controversial breaking news. Many people around the world rely on the mass media for news and entertainment, and globally, mass media is a huge industry.
Usually, mass media aims to reach a very large market, such as the entire population of a country. By contrast, local media covers a much smaller population and area, focusing on regional news of interest, while specialty media is provided for particular demographic groups. Some local media outlets which cover state or provincial news may rise to prominence thanks to their investigative journalism, and to the clout that their particular regions have in national politics. The Guardian, formerly known as the Manchester Guardian, for example, is a nationally-respected paper in England which started as a regional daily.
One of the biggest criticisms of the mass media is that it is too topical. When a media outlet is forced to cover national and international news, it cannot address numerous interesting local stories because these stories are not of interest to very many viewers. For example, the residents of a community might view their fight against development as critical, but the story would only attract the attention of the mass media if the fight became controversial or if precedents of some form were set.
People often think of mass media as the news, but mass media also includes entertainment like television shows, books, and films. It may also be educational in nature, as in the instance of public broadcasting stations which provide educational programming to a national audience. Political communications including propaganda are also frequently distributed via mass media, as are public service announcements and emergency alerts.
While elitists may be tempted to sneer at the mass media, referring to it as the “opiate of the masses,” mass media is a critical part of human societies. Understanding mass media is usually key to understanding a population and culture, which is why the field of media studies is so huge. Watching, reading, and interacting with a nation’s mass media can provide clues into how people think, especially if a diverse assortment of mass media sources are perused.
MASS MEDIA IN OUR LIFE.
There are different kinds of mass media: press, telephone, television, radio and the others. A mass medium is a means or a method we use to send a message to someone else. Even for the simplest communication we must have a sender, a message, a medium and a receiver. Most people are in the habit of reading news because it is interesting and important. Reading is the source of new information. In my view, press is the mirror of current events. Every day millions of newspapers and magazines are published all over the world. Now it is difficult to say how many different newspapers and magazines are issued in our country. There are different national and local papers, dailies and weeklies, some that are issued three times a week and even monthlies. They satisfy different tastes. People subscribe to various papers and magazines, but they have one common aim. They want to know what is going on in the world, in the country, city, town or village, what people are anxious about. That′s why papers and magazines inform the readers about the current events both at home and abroad. They inform the readers of all important developments, pay full attention to the most important national and international affairs, carry commentaries on the most interesting events. There are interviews with well-known people and celebrities. There are also articles on art, sport, music, new books. Everything printed corresponds to people′s interests, as our press is democratic, following the principles of freedom.
Radio and TV are mass media which keep people informed on the topical issues of the day. Both on the radio and TV you can listen to a programme on sports, art, news, music and weather. And it′s an important advantage. Besides there are a lot of entertaining programmes on TV, a lot of feature and documentary films which provoke hot discussions. TV brings the world to our rooms. We see people in our country and in other lands and learn about their customs. There are a lot of TV programmes: news, different talk-shows, TV games (quizzes), concerts, sports programmes and serials. A lot of this programmes are very popular. For example, news deals with political and social problems of a modern society. Their aim is to give analysis of the problems and show different points of view. But tastes differ. Some people are against TV. They say that TV is doing a lot of harm. It occupies a lot of spare time. People used to have hobbies, to meet with friends, to go to the cinema or theatre.
Some people prefer the radio. Radio is preferable to TV when you are at work and need information or have to focus your attention on something else. For example, when you drive a car it is better to listen to the radio than watch TV. But both the radio and TV play an important role in our life as well as newspapers and magazines.
But to my mind, the most widespread mass medium is the Internet. It is used all over the world. You can find any information you like there.
As for me, personally I use all kinds of mass media, because I am eager to know the news round the world, the life of the people and their problems, the economic and political situations in the world. I think that mass media help people to advance in politics, in economics and in education. In my view all kinds of mass media are interesting. I like to watch TV and to read newspapers and magazines. TV helps me to relax after a hard working day and newspapers give interesting and important information.
MEANS OF COMMUNICATION
I believe that nowadays the most important means of communication is the Internet. It is used everywhere: businesses use the Internet to provide access to complex databases, such as financial databases; companies carry out electronic commerce, including advertising, selling, buying, distributing products, and providing after-sales services; businesses and institutions use it for voice and video conferencing and other forms of communication that enable people to telecommunicate, or work from a distance.
The use of electronic mail over the Internet has greatly speeded communication between companies, and between other individuals. Media and entertainment companies use the Internet to broadcast audio and video, including live radio and television programmes. They also offer online chat groups, in which people carry on discussions using written text, and online news and weather programmes. Scientists and scholars use the Internet to communicate with colleagues, to perform research, to distribute lecture notes and course materials to students, and to publish papers and articles. Individuals use the Internet for communication, entertainment, finding information, and to buy and sell goods and services.
Now it is hard to imagine our life without the Internet and mobile phones. They give us wonderful possibilities to get connected with friends and family at a long distance, get new information wherever we are and keep control. But each medal has its reverse and we are to accept the drawbacks we are bumping into. We feel naked and lost control in case we forget our mobile phones at home. We are unable to read ordinary books or attend libraries to find some necessary information. These means of communication made our life easier but at the same time they made us addicted to them. As a result we spend more time talking over mobile phones and surfing the Internet that drinking coffee with friends, having picnic with families or just walking with children in a park. Having connected us with the whole world they made us lonely.
What concerns my own opinion I believe that computer addiction as many other types of addiction can be cured only if the addicts themselves want to be cured. They have to change their lifestyle and began to study or do something else to switch over. I am sure I wouldn’t want to imagine the future of human beings if they preferred sharing their lives with machines instead of with people.
Radio and television are mass media which keep people informed on the topic issues of the day. The difference is that on TV you can see everything you’ve heard about. And it’s an important advantage. Besides, there are a lot of entertaining programmes on TV, a lot of feature, documentary films which provoke hot discussions. But watching TV is often a waste of time.
Radio is preferable to TV when you are at work and need information or have to focus your attention on something else. For example, when you drive a car, it’s better to listen to radio than to watch TV.
But both radio and TV play an important role in our life as well as newspapers. They give the full coverage of the latest events, comment on the most important developments, political and domestic affairs. They acquaint
us with different views and opinions. Thus, they contribute to the development of the information network.
Many people make the mistake of thinking that technology is there to save your time. But I think it is there to give people new ways of filling their time. Take personal computers for example. Learning how to use all the features of a new Pc uses up all the time that having a computer saves.
A recent survey showed that more than eight out of ten young people would rather text their friends that actually speak to them in person. And according to the same survey, 25 % of people would answer their mobile phone even during a moment of being in a WC. I ask you, is this really a better world?
Television is one of the greatest inventions. And I should add that now we are beginning to forget what the world was without TV. Thanks to TV we get a great amount of information, have possibilities for education by watching documentaries, science programmes and by learning the most important issues of the day
Thus, we can say that TV is a great force which attracts millions of people to the screens. But tastes differ and some people are against TV. They say that TV is doing a lot harm because it occupies almost all of our free time. People used to have hobbies, to meet with friends, to read books, to listen to music. Nowadays many people sit watching TV hour by hour. They don’t read books, they don’t do sports, they begin to forget the art of conversation. Watching TV for a long time may lead to poor health and ruin eye-sight.
Although television was invented less than a hundred years ago, it became very important to us as it gives us information. What makes television so popular, is that having information which provides television people become successful. When people watch television, they not only get information but also learn. If viewers want to learn something new, they are free to watch special educational TV channels which deal with high quality documentaries about history, science, culture, nature, etc. These are the advantages of television. One of the disadvantages of this means of communication and entertainment is that it is getting more and more dangerous as there is a great amount of violence on TV. Many people think that children and teenagers are influenced by the aggression-promoting programmes and films which instruct them how to do illegal things, steal, injure or even kill people. TV is become more dangerous for young people because their immature minds absorb the violence they watch and then it transforms into their behaviour. Children who watch TV may start fighting with the real world which contradicts the fiction they watch on TV.
What is mass media ответы на вопросы
You are going to give a talk about the mass media. You will have to start in 1,5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences). Remember to say:
— what proves that the Russians are a reading nation;
— what kind of information most papers and magazines contain;
— what kind of mass media modern teenagers enjoy reading;
— what kind of mass media you prefer.
You have to talk continuously.
It is a well-known fact that the Russians are a reading nation, as it is impossible to imagine our life without news, newspapers, magazines and books. Millions of copies of them appear every day, and they are usually sold really quickly.
Most newspapers contain news, reviews of books, films and events, art and TV shows, sports events covers, detailed articles on international and home affairs. The majority of magazines contain news about celebrities, reviews of various events and a huge number of detailed articles on different aspects of daily life. The most common thing for mass media nowadays is the big amount of advertisements everywhere.
I believe that it is quite easy to find newspapers and magazines for teenagers, but I don’t think that they read paper versions a lot. We have the Internet access nearly everywhere, that is why a lot of magazines and newspapers have on-line, or so-called digital versions. When young people read such mass media sources they learn much about every day life all over the world. Some people read foreign magazines and learn a lot of English phrase and words.
I am the one, who prefers digital magazines and newspapers, that are better than my newsfeed on any social network. I prefer reading English versions of my favourite magazines, they help me master my skills and broaden my horizons.

Types of Mass Media
When it comes to the different forms of media, there are varied formats of modern media such as print media (newspapers, books, magazines), broadcast media (television, radio), digital media (internet) as well as video games, music, cell phones, films, amongst others. All these types of mass media comprise content as well as a device or object which is the medium for delivering the content.
There are 6 main types of Mass Media:
Traditional Media
People have developed different ways of communication depending upon their local language and culture. Traditional media is one of the oldest types of mass media to transfer traditions and culture over generations. The tools of communication have been developed from beliefs, customs, rituals, and practices of society. Traditional media imparts indigenous ways of communication for ages. Further, this type of mass media varied as per each culture and society as every culture has its mediums to communicate to its mass audience. Thus, the traditional media can be folk songs, dances, folktales and folklore as well as paintings, sculptures, stupas, statues and fairs, festivals, rural or community radio and announcement mediums like nagada, etc.
Forms of Traditional Media
Print Media
In simple words, Print Media is all about the printed form of information and news. Before the invention of the printing press, printed materials had to be hand-written which made mass distribution almost impossible. Print media is one of the basic types of mass media tools making it very popular and convenient to reach a wider audience. Newspapers are considered the oldest forms of mass media after the traditional mass media as for a long period, the general public relied on newspapers to know the latest happenings in their local areas as well as from around the world. Thus, print media originally refers to newspapers and then expanded to magazines, tabloids, promotional brochures, journals, books, novels and comics.
Forms of Print Media
Electronic Broadcasting Media
Broadcasting is simply a distribution of audio and video content to a dispersed audience using the electronic broadcasting medium. Originally the term ‘broadcasting’ referred to the sowing of seeds on farms by scattering them over a large field. Broadcast media allows ease of news dissemination to even an illiterate person because it appeals to both the auditory and visual senses making it one of the most lucrative types of mass media. Centuries later after the newspapers were used as the original mass media, the advent of radio and television happened. Radio was the primary medium of news for the general public during wars as well as for sports and entertainment. When television was invented, it became the most effective type of mass media as it was primarily used for news dissemination and then for TV shows, live events and other entertainment purposes.
Forms of Broadcasting Media
Outdoor Media
This is also known as OOH or Out-of-Home Media and is focused on transmitting information and news when the public is outside their home. Outdoor media gives importance to displaying advertising and attracting individuals towards new products, some social cause or any development or change in society. These are prominent in brand promotion seen on buildings, streets, electric polls, roadside, vehicles, screens, kiosks, etc. This is one of the most prominent types of mass media used for commercial as well as public welfare advertising and mainly includes billboards, banners, posters, brochure distribution, ComPark Advertising, and Wallscape, amongst others!
Forms of Outdoor Media
Transit Media
Transit Media revolves around the concept of advertising and information dissemination when consumers are “on the go” in public places or transit. These include display advertising on vehicles and transportation. With the aim of “driving home, a message” transit media is significantly used for massive brand promotion to millions of people who travel the country’s streets and highways every day.
Some people might think that this type of mass media is outdated or ineffective, yet it is widely visible on the sides of buses, in subway cars, and at transit stations where passengers enter or disembark from public transportation.
Forms of Transit Media
New Media or Digital Media
Since the invention of the World Wide Web by English scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, the Internet has drastically taken over all types of mass media because of its faster dissemination speed and higher digital technology. New Media is an interactive two-way communication with users being the active producers of content and information. The Internet is considered a highly interactive mass medium and can be simply defined as the “network of networks”. It has quickly transformed into the centre of the mass media as it has marvellously integrated all the prominent types of mass media. Now, you can see news websites, broadcasted TV shows as well as listen to online radio using the internet and this is also called the convergence of mass media!
New Media is normally a re-conceptualization of the existing media. This is a rapidly growing mass media with the ease of accessibility with a computer and an Internet connection (broadband or WiFi). From Story Writing and Graphic Designing to Multimedia and Animation, pursuing a career in this field can be highly advantageous.
