What is their new house like ответыAlthough Charles Dickens wrote during and about the 19th century, he is still greatly admired and respected today, more than a hundred years after his death. He is considered by many to be the greatest English storyteller ever. His characters with their improbable names seem to jump straight out of the page and into real life; and his descriptions of Victorian life are vivid and unforgettable. In addition, his novels did much to bring about social improvements in the latter part of the 19th century.

Many of his books tell a ‘rags to riches’ story; that of a poor
child, who rises to wealth and status through honest hard work
and good fortune. This too, is the story of Charles Dickens’ own life. There was a brief period of good fortune in his early childhood when his family was rich enough to send him to a private school.
Soon, however, his father ran into debt and the family were sent to Marshalsea Debtors’ Prison. At the age of twelve, Dickens had to leave his family to go to work in a factory, where he suffered the terrible conditions of the time as well as great loneliness and even despair. The experience stayed with him all his life. He wrote about it in two of his most famous books, David Copperfield and Great Expectations.

Dickens did more than write novels. He was a trained journalist, and began his writing career reporting on parliament. In 1836, the year of his marriage, his first book, The Pickwick Papers was published and was an immediate success. Even though he was now able to make a living from writing stories, he continued to be involved in journalism and edited a number of weekly magazines. He also administered the affairs of charitable organizations. Dickens loved the theatre and, as well as writing plays, he also acted in them. In fact, on one occasion he was invited to perform for Queen Victoria. He travelled widely, including a trip to the USA where he lectured against slavery.

His energy seemed inexhaustible. He journeyed around Italy with his friend, the mystery writer Wilkie Collins. On their return to Britain, Dickens began work on a mystery story of his own, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, but the story was never finished as Dickens died of a stroke on 9th June 1870.

Wilbur and Orville Wright were bicycle-makers from Dayton in the USA. In 1903, after carefully studying the problems of flight, they fitted a wooden glider with a twelve horsepower petrol engine and two propellers driven by bicycle chains. On a cold morning in December at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they became the first men to fly a «heavier than air» machine.

For the first time planes were mass-produced from standard parts.

The extent of the progress made during the war was shown in 1919, when two Royal Air Force officers, John Aclock and Arthur Whitten-Brown, made the first flight across the Atlantic. They covered 1890 miles from Newfoundland to Ireland at an average speed of 118 m. p.h., battling all the way against fog, ice and storms.

1. What should the main New Year tree of the country look like?
2. What is one of the legends of the Christmas tree?
3. What are the advantages of artificial Christmas trees?
4. What rules did people follow in the past when decorating the Christmas tree?
5. Who changed the date of New Year’s Day in his country?
6. How did the technological progress change Christmas decorations?
7. How did the tradition of decorating the tree with coloured glass balls start?

A. Why do people decorate Christmas trees at home? There are several stories about the start of the tradition. One of them is about Martin Luther, the founder of the protestant faith. While he was walking through a forest on a Christmas Eve, he looked up and was impressed by the beauty of the stars that were shining through the tree branches. He cut down a small tree and took it home. There, he decorated the tree with candles as a present for his family.

B. The tradition of decorating a Christmas tree comes from Germany. Until the 17th century, people decorated their Christmas tree in a certain order. Firstly, a star was fixed on the top. Then people hung apples on lower branches of the tree. Finally, they placed biscuits, gingerbread and sweets underneath. The Christmas tree in the fairy tale Nutcracker was decorated in exactly this way.

C. The Christmas tree tradition came to Russia with Peter the Great in the 18th century. He enjoyed the celebration tradition in Germany and issued a law according to which all families had to decorate their houses with pine tree branches. It also announced that people should have fun on that day. Peter the Great also decided to move New Year’s celebration from 1st September to 1st January.

D. The most popular Christmas decoration was invented by a German glass-blower. He made a ball and decorated it with angel figures and snowflakes. The man gave it as a gift to his daughter. The girl decided to put the ball on the Christmas tree. It was so beautiful that the glass-blower made many more decorated balls and sold them. Now people all over the world choose to decorate their Christmas trees in this way.

E. In the 18th century, people started decorating Christmas trees with candles. Later, with the discovery of electricity, electric lights were put on Christmas trees. It was Edward Johnson, an assistant of Thomas Edison, who first used electric lights for Christmas tree decoration. People liked his idea. However, it took several years before the electric lights became available to the general public.

F. Nowadays, Christmas trees are found everywhere – in houses, on the streets and squares. Most of them are artificial trees. However, in the centre of Moscow, in the Kremlin, you can always see a natural Christmas tree. The most important tree of the country is carefully chosen in the forest – it should be tall and beautiful. Professional designers decorate it to create an unforgettable fairytale tree for thousands of children and their parents.

Old Neighbours —

We all know what it is like to live in modern homes and enjoy a peaceful neighbourhood, but what was life like hundreds of years ago for villagers in northern Russia?

Spotlight on Russia takes a look at life in … — Spotlight on Russia

The Russian Village of Shuvalovka

The Russian Village of Shuvalovka is a wonderful cultural experience. Visitors can see what life in a northern village was like hundreds of years ago. The modern village of Shuvalovka is a copy of what the community looked like in 1714. The original neighbourhood was started by five Finnish farming families. Over the years, various people got the land and new buildings and shops were added. At one time in its history Count Ivan Shuvalov was the owner of the land.

The village has recreated the traditional log home cabins that the 18th-century Novgorod peasants lived in. Inside each house, there is a Russian stove where the family cooked their meals and slept on benches. There are also reproductions of the local shops and mills that provided people in the community with their everyday needs.

Other main attractions in the village include Masliany Lug or Butter Meadow. This area was and still is the perfect place for fun and games. Many festivals, popular sports tournaments, fairs and music events are held here all year round. In the winter months, the village also hosts holiday events and offers a skating rink, sledding hills, traditional sleigh rides and horseback riding.

What would your perfect house be like? Describe it.

I often dream what my perfect house would be like. And I know exactly what I want. My perfect house should be built with modern energy-efficient technologies and materials. It should be quite spacious but not very large. I think it would be enough for my future family to have a one-floor bungalow with a loft, a living room, three bedrooms, a study, a kitchen and a bathroom inside. I would like to have a small garden with several fruit trees and a lawn. There might be a pool in my garden. I don’t want to have any garage. I think a port for two cars would be enough. I dream my house should be painted in light yellow and brown and have a dark brown roof.

Where would you like to live if you could choose any place? Why? —

I don’t like the city noise, but I love the comfort that city living can provide. I love countryside quietness but I can’t imagine how to live far from city infrastructure. So, I would choose a suburban settlement somewhere near the city with easy access to transportation. This way I’ll get a countryside quietness and access to city comfort.

Who would you like to have as neighbours? —

Nobody can influence what neighbours will be like. But we can affect what relationships we’ll have with them. Of course, I would like to have extremely kind and helpful people as neighbours. But first of all, I should be kind and helpful to them.

Find out what life was like for your grandparents. Where did they live? Did they live in a community? What was their house like?

My grandparents lived in the countryside. They lived in small wooden houses. Their lives weren’t similar to ours. They had to not only go to school but work hard in their family gardens. They also had to graze cows, feed pigs and chickens. The nearest shop and a school were in two kilometres from my grandfather’s house. So he had to take a bike to get there. My grandmother travelled to school by bus. My grandparents most of their free time used to spend outside playing different games, riding bikes in summer and skiing in winter.
