Language levels

A1 – Elementary

You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. You can introduce yourself and others and you can ask and answer questions about personal details, such as where you live, people you know and things you have. You can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A2 – Pre-intermediate

You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). You can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. You can describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate basic need.

B1 – Intermediate

You can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. You can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. You can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. You can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

B2 – Upper Intermediate

You can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialisation. You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. You can produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

C1 – Advanced

You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. You can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. You can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

C2 – Proficiency

You can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. You can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

What are the language levels of English?

Language levels in English start from A1 and move all the way up to C2. A1 is a beginner and C2 is a fluent native level speaker.
Sometimes levels are separsated into sub-levels, such as: A1.1, A1.2, A2.1, A2.2. This is done to help guide you through your learning.

What is the CEFR?

The CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is an international standard which describes how good you are at a specific language.

Levels go from A1 (beginner) right up to C2 (native speaker/master level). Most countries and universities ask for a B2 level for visas and course applications.

How do the tests work?

The Lingoda language level tests are very simple and easy to use. All you have to do is click the language you want to learn and then answer the questions. The test will stop once you have got to a certain level and then this level will be shared with you.

This is your recommended language learning level. So if you are given an A2 level then we recommend you start taking classes with Lingoda at A2.

Как оценить уровень владения английским языком

На Хабре много статей о том, как самостоятельно изучать английский язык. Но вот вопрос, а как оценить свой уровень при самостоятельном изучении? Понятно, что есть IELTS и TOEFL, но эти тесты почти никто не сдает без дополнительной подготовки и эти тесты, как говорят, оценивают не сколько уровень владения языком, а скорее умение проходить эти самые тесты. Да и использовать их для контроля самообучения будет накладно.

В этой статье я собрал различные тесты, которые проходил сам. При этом я сверяю свою субъективную оценку владения языком с результатами тестов. А также сравниваю результаты между разными тестами.

Если вам захочется пройти тесты, не останавливаетесь на словарном запасе, попробуйте пройти их все, результаты тестов желательно оценивать в комплексном подходе.

В этом тесте нужно выбрать только те слова, которые в точно знаете, именно перевод и значение, а не где-то слышал и примерно знаю. Только в этом случае результат будет корректным.
Мой результат два года назад: 7300, сейчас 10100. Уровень native speaker — 20000 – 35000 слов.

Тут немного другой подход, нужно выбрать синонимы или антонимы к словам, результат вполне коррелирует с предыдущим тестом — 10049 слов. Ну и чтобы еще подорвать вашу самооценку тест выдает – «Your vocabulary size is like that of a 14-year-old teenager in the US!»

Your attention index is 100%», Здесь вам дают сравнительно сложные слова вперемешку с простыми при этом спрашивая значение или синоним слова, плюс часто попадаются несуществующие слова. Тоже минус к самооценке – «Your vocabulary quantitatively corresponds to a vocabulary of a native speaker at age 9».

В целом тесты достаточно близко определяют словарный запас несмотря на разные методы тестирования. В моем случае вполне приближенный к реальности результат, и именно на основании этих тестов я выяснил что словарный запас у меня не очень большой и мне надо больше работать в эту сторону. При этом словарного запаса мне хватает для просмотра ютуба, большинства сериалов и фильмов без перевода и субтитров. Но субъективно мне казалось, что ситуация намного лучше.

Тесты на грамматику с последующей оценкой часто размещают на сайтах онлайн школ, если ссылки ниже будут напоминать рекламу, знайте, это не так.

В целом по всем тестам результат между Intermediate и Upper-Intermediate, что вполне соответствует моим ожиданиям, специально грамматикой я никогда не занимался, все знания «пришли» из потребления контента на английском. Все тесты используют одинаковую методику, и я думаю их вполне можно использовать для обнаружения пробелов в знаниях.

Лучший из бесплатных тестов на чтение и аудирование. Советую пройти короткий тест, а затем полный. Мой результат в полном тесте: Listening Section 86/100 C2 Proficient, Reading Section 77/100 C2 Proficient, общий бал EF SET 82/100 C2 Proficient. В данном случае результат меня удивил, три года назад общий бал был 54/100 B2 Upper-Intermediate.

У них так же есть автоматический Speaking test, пока в стадии бета-тестирования. Результаты:

EF SET в части чтения и аудирования максимально приближен к IELTS/TOEFL.

Простой тест на сайте одной из онлайн школ, чуть чтения/проверки словарного запаса, чуть аудирования, чуть грамматики.
Результат: Ваш уровень — Intermediate! Набрано баллов 36 из 40.
Думаю, для определения уровня вопросов в тесте мало, но тест стоит пройти. С учетом простоты теста, оценка немного обидная, но кого мне винить кроме себя.

Еще один общий тест с интересным подходом, результат вполне отражает мой уровень.

Мне достаточно интересно было оценить свой уровень, так как я никогда не занимался английским специально. В школе, да и в университете очень не везло с преподавателями (да и я не старался) и знаний больше London is the capital… я оттуда не вынес. Куда больший результат дали игры на английском, а потом выбранная профессия системного администратора, в которой без английского никак. На протяжении лет постепенно набирался словарный запас и улучшалось умение воспринимать язык на слух. Наибольший результат дал уход во фриланс и работа на англоязычных заказчиков. Тогда же я принял решение потреблять 90% контента на английском. По тесту EF SET понятно, как вырос уровень понимания и чтения за эти три года. На следующий год задача увеличить словарный запас, подтянуть грамматику, подтянуть разговорный английский. Очень хочется сделать это самостоятельно, без помощи оффлайн/онлайн школ.

Основной вывод: бесплатные тесты можно и нужно использовать для контроля уровня владения английским языком. Проходя тесты раз в полгода/год (в зависимости от интенсивности обучения) можно оценить свой прогресс и найти слабые стороны.

If you can speak two languages at the same level of native-like proficiency, you are BILINGUAL.

If you know more than 4 or 5 foreign languages, you can call yourself a POLYGLOT.

BE CAREFUL!

A lot of people try to say ‘I speak in English’ or ‘I speak in Russian’. We don’t normally use IN in such sentences.

Correct: ‘I speak English’ or ‘I can speak English’, ‘I can speak Russian’.

Describing levels of language proficiency according to CEFR

There are three levels of language proficiency:

Basic User / Beginner, Elementary, and Pre-intermediate (A1-A2)

Independent User / Intermediate and Upper-intermediate (B1-B2)

Proficient User / Advanced (C1-C2)

But if you don’t know what it means, a teacher could help you with testing and recommendations.

Phrases to describe what you can do in the language

Telling about your general language proficiency (CV’s, autobiographies, etc.)

You can describe your language skills as Basiс, Conversational, Fluent, or Proficient.

Basic – you can communicate on simple topics or know some phrases in this language.

Conversational – you can communicate on everyday topics with minor grammar or vocabulary mistakes but you can’t write in this language.

Fluent – you have the ability to express any idea without hesitation, with good vocabulary and grammar; people understand you easily. Both your spoken and written skills are good.

Proficient – different from fluent in the way that you now understand the structure of the language and you can explain how this language works to other people. You also can use idiomatic language and understand local accents.
