Which tradition, according to Helen, is still alive in Navaho lifestyle?
Helen: People call me Helen, though it is not my real name. All our names have special meanings; my original name for instance can be translated as ‘dewdrop’ from my native language.
Presenter: That is a beautiful name indeed! Why would one change it?
Helen: You see I had to when I went to school. It was not easy for my teachers and classmates to pronounce it as our system — I mean the Navaho system — of vowel sounds is so much different for people around, which makes it problematic both for ear and tongue. The sound of my name was closest to Helen so I put up with that.
Presenter: When people hear your tribe name, they imagine Indian-style tents and horse riding without a saddle. Could you explain what your land and people are like?
Helen: Much about the life of modern Native Americans is not the same as stereotypes may make you believe. Our land is basically a desert, with proper houses scattered everywhere. We no longer live in our traditional teepees. They are only used for religious meetings. We still ride horses as the land is very open. The people are nice and friendly. I live in a small community in New Mexico.
Presenter: Could you tell us about your family?
Helen: Well, mine is very large, with a lot of relatives spread all over the reservation, and some in different cities. I have three brothers, a sister and three sisters-in-law. I’m the youngest of my family. However, it is not a must, not all our families are the same size. They used to be like ours, but not anymore.
Presenter: What is your lifestyle like?
Helen: Again, far from stereotypes. I go out with friends and wear clothes like an ordinary person — we only wear squaw dresses on certain occasions. I play all types of sports.
Presenter: Do you feel that your traditions are being kept or have they been destroyed, as your people become more influenced by European culture?
Helen: In some families Navaho traditions are kept — they are in my family. Other families are being influenced by white culture, but I think it is wrong for a Navaho to be completely like a white person. Something truly authentic must remain.
Presenter: Is English your first language?
Helen: When I was a child, I was taught both English and Navaho. Now I have partly forgotten the latter — I can understand almost anything but speaking or writing may create a problem for me. The elders understand our language best.
Presenter: What do you do on an average weekend?
Helen: I go to Farmington, the nearest large town, and go shopping, eat out, and then go to the movies. A great weekend would be going to the mall where I’d hang out with friends.
Presenter: Have you traveled much? What is your favourite place?
Helen: Yes, I have traveled. My favourite place is Connecticut. I would like to go overseas some day and see how people are there, and what their lifestyle is like. Navaho people are hospitable and we welcome travelers in our land too.
Presenter: Thank you, Helen.
We still ride horses as the land is very open.
Let me introduce myself. I’m Helen Galachinskaya. I was born on the 23 of December 1993 in Aktobe. My sign of the zodiac is Capricorn. Capricorns are generally serious about whatever they do. Capricorns are down-to-earth. It is wrong for me because I’m usually emotional and active. My life is very diverse. I think that I have a charitable nature, I always help people. I’m usually calm, but sometimes I can lose my temper and become either angry or sad. I like to laugh and joke. I have got a sense of humor. I’m sensitive because I can’t control my emotions, and I can easily be hurt. I’m hard-working and ambitious. I set high goals for myself and I work hard to reach them. I’m sociable, so I have got a lot of friends. I appreciate people’s honesty, frankness and politeness. I don’t like when people are rude and aggressive.
When I look at myself in the mirror I see a blond girl with long waved hair and big beautiful eyes. I like my eyelashes, they are thick. I have a snub nose, a happy smile and a slim figure.
I have got some hobbies. I’m always very busy but when I’m free I like to read books. I think books help me to continue my education. In my opinion, books are a source of romantic feelings and emotions. I enjoy reading books about life or modern love stories, but I hate reading detectives. I think it’s just a waste of time. I also love music. My favorite types of music are dance music, hip-hop, rock and alternative music. I like to draw. I study at art school and take lessons of painting there. I often buy paper, brushes, paint and water-colours. We make sketches outdoors and draw landscapes and people, pets and still life. I’m also a photographer. I like to take photos.
Sometimes I play different sport games. My favorite games are «freeze», basketball, tennis and volleyball. I don’t like to watch TV, but I do it from time to time. I often go for a walk, to the mall or cinema with my friends or my boyfriend.
As for my future life, I want to be an architect and a designer. I am going to build the house of my dream!

My name is Helen. I am a first-year
My name is Helen. I am a first-year student of the University. My parents live in Sochi and I study in Rostov-on-Don so I need some housing. There are two opportunities for me: I can live in a dormitory (a students hostel), or to rent a flat (an apartment). I decided to rent a flat. To make the rent smaller, I also decided to share my flat with another girl — Natasha Kozlova. She studies at the University, too, and she is my best friend now. Now, let me describe my usual working day. My classes begin at 8:30. So on week-days I have to get up at 7:15. I don’t have an alarm clock and usually my roommate wakes me up and my working day begins. I turn on the radio and do my morning exercises while Natasha takes a shower. I don’t take a bath in the morning because I don’t have enough time for it. I take a cool shower (that’s when I completely wake up), brush my teeth.
After that I go back to our room and get dressed. I brush my hair and put on a light make-up. Then we have breakfast. Natasha makes breakfast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have to serve breakfast on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I love to listen to the latest news on the radio while I am eating and Natasha prefers light music. We leave the house at ten minutes past eight and walk to the nearest bus-stop. We live rather far from the University and it usually takes us about a quarter of an hour to get there by bus. Sometimes when the weather is fine and we have enough time we walk to the University. It is very healthy to walk much. The classes begin at 8:30 in the morning and they end at 2:00 p.m. We have lectures in different subjects. As a rule we have three or four classes a day. Sometimes it is very hard to wait till they end.
Usually I don’t miss my classes because I want to pass my exams successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when the weather is fine and the classes are boring. At 11:50 we have lunch. That’s my favourite time. That is the time to share the latest news and to gossip. My friends and I prefer not to go to the canteen and we often have lunch in a small cafe not too far from the University. At 12:30 we have to be back to our classes. During the working day we also have several short breaks that last for ten minutes. Occasionally I have to stay at the University till 5 or even 6 o’clock in the evening because I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on week-days. So by the end of the week I get very tired. We come home at about 7 o’clock in the evening. We eat supper together and share the latest news. After supper we wash dishes, drink coffee or tea and watch TV. I prefer old comedies and Natasha likes serials or films about travelling. Sometimes Natasha and I go for a walk in the park or visit our friends. At about eleven at night I go to bed. I like to read something before going to bed and Natasha likes to listen to some music. Sometimes I fall asleep while I am reading and Natasha gets up and switches off the light and says — Good night!
