Part 1 (IELTS, Cambridge)

Happiness

There are many things that can make me happy, for example, taking a 30-minute walk outside can help me let off steam and I won’t feel any depressed, or buying lots of things online can deliver me even more happiness because it makes me feel that I save a great amount of money.

Let me have a little think…um… well, first of all, what always makes me happy is seeing my friends and family happy, which I suppose is probably the same for everyone. And as well as that, I’d say just doing the things I enjoy always puts me in a happy mood, you know, like playing the piano, and going to KTV with my friends.

It’s kind of hard to say but people that I know around me tend to feel happy about earning more money, but maybe for others, they would feel happy when their children get into the good universities.

Part 2

Success and Achievement

Describe an achievement you are proud of.

and explain why you are proud of this achievement.

A few years ago, I was successful in obtaining my licence to pilot a helicopter. It was something I was always dreaming of doing when I was a child, and I was very proud when I finally managed to obtain it.

It wasn’t easy; in fact, I almost gave up at one point, I had to learn a lot of new things and study a lot as well. I also had to work very hard to afford the flying lessons. But in the end, it was all worth it when I passed the final tests and was awarded my pilot’s licence.

Like I said, it was something I had always wanted to do, I was always fascinated by helicopters when they flew overhead. When I was a child my family used to live near an air force base, and so I saw helicopters landing and taking off almost every day.

I think that’s where my interest came from. It just looked like so much fun and I loved the noise as they flew over my house. As soon as I was old enough I enrolled in a course to learn all the technical skills and then started taking flying lessons with an experience pilot.

The whole process took me about a year, because I couldn’t do it any quicker at the time because my work kept me extremely occupied at that time. But I was determined to complete all the training and accumulate enough flying hours to qualify as a pilot.

The main reason I feel very proud of this achievement is because it’s one of the first goals in life I ever had, before I even decided to go to university, and it wasn’t an easy thing to learn to do, so when I eventually qualified and got my licence I was over the moon. It was difficult at times, but totally worth it in the end.

It’s also not a common thing, none of my friends have done anything like it, so that makes me feel proud, too. It took a lot of discipline and dedication, and money, but the entire process was a great learning experience, and I’m very happy that I managed to do it.

Describe an event or activity that makes you happy.

and explain how your life has been enriched by this event or activity

I’d like to tell you about an activity that has makes me happy. And I could do it more if I had less work to do. That’s hiking. I haven’t had many chances to take part in such amazing activity, so up to now, I’ve hiked 3 times: one time in 2000 up to the Fansipan, Sapa (I actually couldn’t make it to the peak of that more than 3000m mountain); another time in 2012 in Tay Ninh when I did hike to the pagoda on the mountain rather than taking the cable car, and the last time in 2013 when I was on a field trip with my students. The more I hike, the more I learn. Hiking is an incredible activity for me. I really enjoy the breath-taking view when I go up to the summit of the mountain, you know, when I look down to the plain and look up to the sky, I find myself in between. You will have the feeling of a victory, feeling like you break a new record. Though getting a little tired for not practising enough, hiking has taught me so many things about myself. I felt I was strong and young when I was at the middle way up to Fansipan. Or I thought I was a champion when I was at the peak of 1000m above the sea level in Da Lat. I think in general, hiking teaches me how to be happy, to feel great, and to be independent, like I’ve found time after time I could overcome a challenge. And so for me, hike is not only for fun, but mainly for seeing how I can achieve the next goal. And each time of hiking, to me, is a trophy. I’ve had 3 trophies though.
