– How often do you go to the cinema?
Ответ: I usually go to the cinema once or twice a month. In summer I go oftener because I have vacations and a lot of free time.
– What kinds of films do you like most?
Ответ: I like science-fiction films most because they are full of ideas to think about, and these films have more visual effects.
– Why do you think many people prefer watching films at home?
Ответ: Many people prefer watching films at home for a number of reasons. The main reason is that they can download films from the Internet for free. In addition to it, they can stop the film at any moment and then start again.
– What do you like to do in your free time?
Ответ: Frankly speaking, I don’t have much free time because I have to prepare for the exams. Anyway, I like surfing the Internet very much. I usually watch videos, communicate with friends in social nets, and so on.
– How can films in English help students improve their English?
Ответ: First of all, films in English help students improve their listening skills. You gradually get accustomed to the variety of accents, slurring of words, slang, and the like. If you find difficulties in understanding English, you can use subtitles.
– What film would you recommend your friends see, and why?
Ответ: I would recommend my friends to watch sitcoms. For example, How I Met Your Mother. Firslty, this sitcom is very funny. As for me, I can’t help laughing when watching it. Secondly, this sitcom has a lot of real spoken English.

A Story of Hollywood
The world capital of filmed entertainment Los Angeles has been a lot of things over the past 100 years. First, it was a little city with orange forest and great weather. But, one day in 1908 a group of people from Chicago came to Los Angeles to shoot a film. Since that day a lot of directors, producers, actors and thousands of other workers have been coming to Los Angeles. In 1911 the first studio appeared in Hollywood (a part of Los Angeles).
In the 1920s Hollywood made 80% of the world’s films. Silent and black-and-white films of those early years starring Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin were forced out by sound films in the middle of the 1920s. Full-length films came up to take place of short films. And the first colour film, Gone With the Wind, was shot in 1939. This film brought a great success to Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable who starred in the film. The number of the studios grew very quickly. They combined in large corporations and now the biggest film companies are MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros, and Universal.
The first genres of American films were melodrama, western and comedy, later appeared adventure and historical films. But now the range of genres is much richer. Hollywood got the name of the factory of dreams. It is associated with wealth and paradise of sun and palm trees. But it is only a façade for a darker truth.

There are two lines of the words. Read them in transcription, pay attention to the pronunciation, and then find unnecessary word in each line.

Silent, black’n’white, colour, short, full-length, sound, western.

An adventure film
A science fiction film
The film industry is very large and creates millions every year. When people think of the film industry, they are normally thinking of the bright lights of Hollywood and the glossy style films that are produced there. However, there are many more genres within the film industry! We are going to look at 7 different genres of film, although there are many.
Films were not really subjected to genre analysis by film historians until the 1970s.
Until the 1970s films where not generally specified as a particular genre, film genres help to categorise films, allowing more meaningful comparisons.
Not all films fit directly into 1 genre, the new ‘hybrid’ films may overlap genres. Similarly, not all films are identified by genre, the auteur system categorises films on the basis of expression. For example;
Woody Allen will signify a comedy film to the audience
Alfred Hitchcock implies suspense and thrillers.
John Ford and John Wayne are associated with westerns
Errol Flynn is commonly known for the classic swashbuckler adventure films.
The Action Genre.
Action Films act like an escape for the audience, Action Films include the renowned James Bond.

Hero and Villain
The Comedy Genre
Within the Comedy genre there are many sub-genres including slapstick, spoofs and parody and romantic comedies. The obvious aim of a comedy film is to make the audience laugh, conventions of the comedy genre include;
Light hearted plots
One- Liners
Jokes
As the media obsession with crime, gangsters and young offenders escalates, more and more modern gangster films are being produced including 50 Cents ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin.’ This type of film focuses on the sinister actions of criminals and mobsters, conventions of gangster films include;
Crime
Armed Robberies
Drugs
Murders
Drive by Shootings
The Crime/Gangster Genre.
Quite possible the largest film genre, Dramas do not generally focus on special effects or comedy, Dramas are often plot driven and serious, they portray realistic characters and life settings. Dramas are all about character development and involve life stories.
Common themes within a drama include;
Drug addiction
Racism
Corruption
Domestic Violence
Mental illness
Although dramas often deal with the ills of society, they seem to place the blame on an individual and not except that it is a social problem.

Historical films are often very elaborate and set against a panoramic backdrop. Conventions of Historical films include;

Science fiction (Sci-fi) films are often futuristic, visionary and imaginative, conventions of the Sci-fi genre include;

The Horror Genre.
Our worst fears are captivated within a Horror film, their sole purpose is to scare its audience, while captivating and entertaining. Horror films are often terrifying and shocking. There are many sub-genres of horror and they often overlap, Conventions of horror include;
