Mass Media (1)

Mass media are one of the most characteristic features of modern civilization. People are united into one global community with the help of mass media. People can learn about what is happening in the world very fast using mass media. The mass media include newspapers, magazines, radio and television.
The earliest kind of mass media was newspaper. The first newspaper was Roman handwritten newssheet called «Acta Diurna» started in 59 B.C. Magazines appeared in 1700’s. They developed from newspapers and booksellers’ catalogs. Radio and TV appeared only in 20th century.
The most exciting and entertaining kind of mass media is television. It brings moving pictures and sounds directly to people’s homes. So one can see events in faraway places just sitting in his or her chair.
Radio is widespread for its portability. It means that radios can easily be carried around. People like listening to the radio on the beach or picnic, while driving a car or just walking down the street. The main kind of radio entertainment is music.
Newspapers can present and comment on the news in much detail in comparison to radio and TV newscasts. Newspapers can cover much more events and news.
Magazines do not focus on daily, rapidly changing events. They provide more profound analysis of events of preceeding week. Magazines are designed to be kept for a longer time so they have cover and binding and are printed on better paper.

The media in the life of society

The mass media plays an important role in our everyday life. In fact it is an essential part of modern society. Press, radio and TV keep people informed on the latest and most sensational events.

Millions of copies of newspapers are printed in our country every day. All the most important questions of social, economic, scientific and cultural life, moral and ecological problems are published in the press and discussed on TV. Opinions clash, officials and political parties are subjected to criticism whatever their position may by. The mass media is constantly trying to stimulate interest in every aspect of life of the country.

Newspapers, magazines and TV programmes for youth reflect the young people’s hopes and wishes, their leisure and education, their attitudes and opinions. Of course such programmes, magazines and newspapers mostly deal with leisure, especially music and the cinema. But TV programmes like «Up to 16 and beyond» and newspapers like el am young» also offer young people advice of a college or a job and help them to choose the right course in solving their problems.

Not only young people, but all categories of readers often write to their favorite programmes or publications, offering their opinions or asking for advice. In this way constant contact between the media and the public exists and develops.

Another kind of link between the public and the media which appeared recently is advertising. The mass media helps us with information about new goods and services. But some people are tired of advertisements and don’t like to see their favorite films or programmes interrupted by them. I hope some way will be found to solve this problem. For example, in Great Britain, there are two organizations providing TV and radio services. The BBC is state-funded and there is absolutely no advertising in BBC programmes, and in the programmes of the Independent Television, the advertising is also restricted.

In Russia nowadays, there are many national daily and weekly newspapers. There are also local newspapers in all parts of Russia, and one can find newspapers and magazines for sports fans, music fans and so on. Our family subscribes to Izuestiya (Trud, Sevodnia etc.) and Vecherny Peterburg (Smena etc.) because they are informative, interesting and objective. My father is interested in sport, so he sometimes buys «Sport-express» at the newsstands. I’m not very interested in politics and economics, so I sometimes buy newspapers and magazines about music and the cinema.

Dialogue:

— Can either of you tell me who the most popular authors are today? Perhaps you can,

— You see so many people in the train to and from London.

— Yes, I do, and they seem to read newspapers mostly but if it’s a novel it’s certainly a paperback and usually a detective story or a spy thriller. I myself prefer something with more meat in it, a travel book or a biography.

— I think novels are for men. They have much more time on their hands, and they can’t do without romance.

— I couldn’t agree with you more. Most of the men I see on the train who are not reading newspapers are poring over the books about politics, history, or do-it-yourself manuals showing them how to make their wives a comer cupboard out of an old box or build a model railway for their sons. This sort of things gives them a purpose in life, which novel-reading certainly doesn’t. If they want light entertainments they’ve always get TV.

17. Mass Media

The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views.

What concerns my family, my parents like to read newspapers. My father prefers to read «Komsomolskaya Pravda», «Argumenty i Fakty’, “SB”. These newspapers contain and give coverage of local, home and foreign affairs. Their publications deal with very burning problems of our country, latest events and forecasts for future. They also touch upon cultural and sport news. My parents subscribe to some periodicals, sometimes they buy newspapers and magazines in a kiosk.

We all like to watch TV. I like educational and entertainment programmes like “Umnitsy i umniki”, “Odin protiv vsekh” and many others. My mum is fond of watching series; my dad usually watches the latest news. We also enjoy watching a good film together.

We don’t listen to the radio very often. It usually occurs when we travel somewhere, especially on long distances. Sometimes I turn on the radio when I do something about the house.

I think it’s television. Nowadays television is the main source of news for millions of people. People like TV because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that’s an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing.

However, watching television has both advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, TV keeps people informed of current events; it gives us wonderful possibilities for education. We can choose any programme according to our interests, mood and needs. There is a great amount of channels which are specialized in various spheres: politics, news, sports, animals, feature films, soap operas, art, talk-shows, cartoons, educational programmes, music, fashion and many others.

The second advantage of watching television is that it gives families an opportunity to spend some time together. Nowadays adults are often too busy. When they come home from work in the evening, so tired and exhausted, — the only possible way to relax for many is just to lie on the sofa in front of TV. In such situations it’s good to choose a family comedy and see it together with your spouse and children.

Moreover, television is a great source of entertaining. Every day there is a wide choice of films and series on TV — detectives, dramas, comedies, action films, thrillers, horrors, cartoons and others. If you have some spare time, switch on your TV-set and see a good movie with famous and talented actors or actresses. Besides, sometimes television is the only opportunity to watch concerts of world-famous celebrities, like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears or others.

However, watching television has its negative side. It is well-known that television can be harmful for our health. Spending too much time in front of a TV screen may affect our eyesight badly.

There are also many cases when children become TV-addicted.

Moreover, nowadays some TV programmes and films include a lot of violent scenes that can have a negative influence on a child’s psychic development.

Finally, many children nowadays would rather spend a day glued to a TV-set than go outdoors to play with their peers.

Undoubtedly, we need TV, for it is one of the main and most convenient means of mass media. However, taking into account all its merits and drawbacks, we must try to organize our time in the right way so as not to become a TV slave.

Is it difficult to live in front of the cameras?

How did you decide to become a participant of a reality show?

Do you feel pity for having become the participant of a reality show?

If you had a chance would you change your decision?

As I have already said we can choose any programme according to our interests, mood and needs. There is a great amount of channels which are specialized in various spheres: politics, news, sports, animals, feature films, soap operas, art, talk-shows, cartoons, educational programmes, music, fashion and many others. Such channels as «History», «Discovery», «Animal Planet», «365», enrich our knowledge in different fields. There are also channels which offer some educational programmes for children and adults, for example «Happy English» — a programme focused on teaching the English language, «Memory» — a programme which offers a number of exercises for children in order to develop their memory. I especially like the programme “Smart boys and smart girls”. It is an educational programme which is usually on “ONT channel” on Saturdays. The participants of the programme are school-leavers who want to enter the university. Each programme has its own topic and the participants answer the host’s questions about different historic and cultural events, famous people and so on. The host of the programme is Professor Yuri Vyazemsky.

I don’t think so. Everybody can find something interesting for them. We know that newspapers and radio appeared before television. And still they are popular with the public.

There is another important source of information that can replace radio, newspapers and television. It is the Internet. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news time on TV, radio or a newspaper.

The Role of Mass Media (текст для подготовки к экзамену)

Данный текст «The Role of Mass Media» не является образцом для письменной работы, например, такой как эссе, и, тем более, топиком для заучивания. Text «The Role of Mass Media»

It has always been impossible to imagine our life without the mass media. The most ancient mass media are books. Nowadays the most important mass media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet.

All mass media are supposed to inform, educate and entertain people. Subconsciously they influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. They even help to mould public opinion.

Let us consider the advantages and disadvantages of different mass media.

On the one hand, radio, television and the press are valuable because they help to get the latest news, including the weather forecast. We can get information from the Internet in a few minutes. Besides, listening to the radio, watching films on TV, reading the press or navigating the Internet is a good way to relax.

On the other hand, the mass media usually focus on negative information. Watching news programs we primarily learn about war, crimes, disasters, and accidents. Negative information causes stress and bad mood. Some children may become aggressive if they watch violent programmes. What is more, there is a lot of gossip in the press and on TV. The latter is also abounds in stupid chat shows, endless daily soap operas and terrible action films.

Some people are complaining that nowadays the media are full of violence and advertising. On the whole, it is true. But nobody makes you to watch it. You have a choice and you are free to choose.

The situation is the same with the Internet, which is considered to be the newest kind of mass media. It’s a powerful means of communication and a great source of information which helps in school studies. As for me, I use the Internet for finding information and for communicating with my mates. I also download music and films.

To sum up, the mass media are an essential part of modern society. We are able to benefit from their advantages and have to copy with their disadvantages.
