I have no idea how this ended up on my watchlist. It’s like a lifetime movie but in the horror genre. I couldn’t stop laughing at the slow-mo shots of the shirtless dude coming out of the water, or the teen girl blushing. I think i watched a high school movie for girls. And then it goes places. oh it goes places. Lol
EDIT: i watched some spoiler reviews and explained videos. There was a decent amount that i didn’t catch. Probably because the movie lost me early on. And while it doesn’t make up for the overall garbage-idity of this movie, i can now see why some ppl liked it.
To those ppl, anyone who thought this movie was clever or deep, please watch the movie annihilation. There are a lot of similarities, but it will show what a real movie is and what it can do. That movie is amazing, very deep and ridiculously intelligent. (1 viewing, 6/16/2021)
Coming from someone who loves b-rated horror and usually finds it pretty hilarious, this one is just a whole new level of bad.
You know what? I can take the cheese, I can take the poorly written characters, I can take the atrocious dialogue, I can take the threadbare plot, and I can even take the uniformly bad acting. Heck, some of my favorite movies of all time are early-80s slashers, and they’re not known for being great art. My point is I love low-budget, cheesy movies. I’m here for it.
But you know what I’m not here for? A movie that has NO ending. At least in an 80s slasher, you could almost always count on a balls-to-the-walls, over the top ending that could allow you to partially recoup your time investment. In horror, the third act is where your money is. An audience will forgive a lot if you give them a great ending.
In What Lies Below, they apparently forgot to craft ANY ending at all. I could have taken the barely passable first two acts of this movie if the third act had just let it rip. Go insane, go completely and utterly crazy. Go gross out, go icky-sticky, go bloodbath, go off the deep end, jump the shark. But do SOMETHING! Make some kind of statement. A great, ballsy ending would have made it easier to give the rest of this movie a little bit of a break.
Instead, we get the worst possible ending any film can give: the abrupt «non-ending» with no explanation and no resolution, leaving you wondering why you were stupid enough to dispose of 90 minutes of your life for a director and writers who clearly didn’t value your time. Or respect their own.
In conclusion, WLB is a mess. Instead of the crappy parts of this movie—and there are many—leading to at least a fun and crazy ending, the crapy parts end up being all there is. What an insulting train wreck. Extremely unsatisfying! There’s good cheese and bad cheese in movies. This is rotten cheese. Pass.
The casting of the daughter felt misplaced, she looked older than the mother.
Although the twist as the movie unfolded was an interesting concept,it felt incompletely made.
This movie failed overall, not worth seeing again.
Acting & cinematography was, average as well.
Two hours of build up for that.
Spoiler alert: It’s garbage.
The best part of the movie is its visuals and lore. Lovecraft-esque fear of chtonic entities, hypnotic enigmatic lights coming out of nowhere and minimalistic synth soundtrack are making «What Lies Below» a thrilling eye-candy which is pretty much enough for a one-off horror movie. It doesn’t reinvent the genre or offers any real plot twist (I mean, we all know John is going to be a bad guy, and Trey Tucker’s effective performance convinces us right after we see him) but definitely worth a watch for its atmosphere and its actors that probably did even better that the script could offer them.
The ending was horrible. I was like. what?
Cheesy movie. I stuck with it just to see how it would pan out and was jilted. Dont waste your evening.
What c***. After we see the shirtless «bad guy» (2 points) there is nothing else to see because nothing else happens. Who, what, why? None of these are answered.
Could have been, was set up to be but by half way through until the end- nothing.
The film starts off well but descends into chaos like it does not know how to end the story. We also never find out who he was or what they wanted and I hope they don´t think the ending could lead to a sequel.
Why did the mother suddenly get sick? no explanation.
She sent her friend to tell her mother the boyfriend touched her and then went to sleep. She didn’t wait to see what happened, the friend didn’t say goodbye, we know she died but still makes no sense, and then mother did not confront her about it and just started watching television.
As the trivia says, one hour 27 minutes you will never get back.
1. What is the movie about? From the very beginning the movie is telling you what it’s going to be all about.
2, Where is he from? First the title tells you.
4. What does he/they want? His world is dying. Maybe there aren’t enough females to breed. He/they want to breed. As he says some species need to adapt weirdly to an increasingly saltwater world. What better way that interspecies breeding.
5. How did he get that form? Like the lampreys, he’s a leech that affairs to whatever he can latch onto.
6. The color red? He’s attracted to the color for some reason. Maybe his world his red. Mom is actually a redhead. She dyed her hair. This is in the 3rd scene. The drive home. He mentions he sees red in the girl’s hair later on when they’re in the boat. He would know mom’s a redhead (carpet and drapes).
Goofs: Two completely different species cannot breed. Even related ones (donkeys and horses) often give birth to infertile offspring. How does he wear mom’s cooking? Doesn’t she salt the food?
Sure, I will admit that I was suckered in by the movie’s cover/poster, as it had some appeal and actually sold the movie well enough. And as I hadn’t even heard about «What Lies Below» prior to sitting down to watching it, I had no idea what to expect from writer and director Braden R. Duemmler.
Yet, I managed to endure and sit through the movie. I should say that the movie definitely starts out rather well and proves to be interesting enough, as director manages to maintain a good atmospheric sense of suspense to the movie.
But about halfway through the movie the air started to seep out of the balloon rather quickly, and the movie slipped down a slippery downward slope, one from which it never recovered.
What started out as being interesting and suspenseful ended up being a somewhat befuddling heap of nonsense and predictability. And that was something the movie suffered from really bad.
The acting in the movie was adequate, taking into consideration the limitation imposed upon them by the script and storyline. Actor Trey Tucker, playing John, was actually putting on a great performance and stood out as the most memorable performer in this 2020 movie.
For a horror movie than I have to admit that «What Lies Below» just failed on many levels. Writer and director Braden R. Duemmler just failed to deliver a movie that secured a spot in the horror genre as a memorable movie. And just as «What Lies Below» snuck in under the radar, it is a movie that will just as quietly and unnoticed disappear into oblivion.
The effects in the movie were adequate, though. Yet it is simply beyond me why the lampreys in the jars were not utilized more and put into the movie in a more usable manner. They could have added so much more to the movie as a whole, had they been released and allowed to wreak havoc.
The ending of the movie, though, was interesting. I will credit that much to writer and director Braden R. Duemmler. This was definitely not an ending I had seen coming, and it was one that surprised me. I liked the ending, but I will not spoil it for you. But it just wasn’t sufficient to make up for the rest of the movie between the beginning and the ending.
My rating of «What Lies Below» settles on a generous three out of ten stars. There was just simply too much wasted potential here in the hands of writer and director Braden R. Duemmler.

Basically it’s What Lies Beneath mixed into The Abyss. Looks like we saw the best parts in this trailer.
This seems like the creepypasta where there was a healing pool which was really just a cloning plant under the water that took the original and kept them for nutrients.
Cool. gonna watch it. 😎👍🏼
This seems interesting.
Looks pretty good
I’m gonna take a guess, this at 1:35 is the end of the movie. A typical horror cliche where the antagonist somehow survives at the end to the surprise of the protagonist.
Is this THE FACULTY in the woods

I stopped the trailer because it began showing too much, but it looks interesting.

A teenage girl begins to suspect something is fishy about her mom’s new boyfriend whom she just recently met. He seems perfect on the outside but her instinctive distrust leads her to a shocking discovery. I liked the idea of this movie more than the movie itself, but the movie was still pretty enjoyable nonetheless. Ema Horvath and Mena Suvari star.

Worst acting and who wrote this script… please quit your day job. Script writing isn’t for you. It had no depth or meaningful story line. I would have rather cut my lawn with scissors in August.

OK if rather standard suspense/sci-fi film «What Lies Below» keeps you engaged mainly because of Trey Tucker’s hotness. The whole movies is pretty much Trey strutting about as eye-candy until the whole thing gets creepy in an icky way. Yet, even given that, it maintained some plot coherence until the whole thing went off the rails in the last 15 minutes and the ending was completely unexplained.

Well it’s definitely strange not really scary but the most Memorable part is when the step father and the daughter are in the boat. Simply gross and I’ll let you draw your own concern

Very campy, weird sci-fi bio-horror film. Haha. Kind of a Lifetime movie set to super weird. As someone not familiar with this genre, I was pleasantly entertained, while connoisseurs of this genre may be put off.

An original, well made sci fi/horror film that I was going to give an A to until the last 10 minutes, which earned it a D! I won’t reveal spoilers, but we never really see the «bad guy» (other than his feet and one arm), which the whole movie had been building up to, and the ending is very confusing, depressing and unsatisfying. Skip it.

I could tell there was something fishy about Trey because his teeth. 100% cobblers.

What Lies Below director explains freakish end of chart-topping Netflix horror movie
THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE FILM WHAT LIES BELOW.
Writer-director Braden R. Duemmler’s debut movie What Lies Below caused few waves when it was released on VOD at the end of 2020. But the filmmaker was optimistic about the horror production making more of a mark after it hit Netflix last Sunday.
«I had hope because I believe in the film,» says Duemmler. «I was hoping to get into the top 10 and just be in the conversation. That’s all I wanted, just to see people talking about it.»
The director’s hopes were fulfilled, and then some. By Tuesday, Duemmler’s film — which stars American Pie actress Mena Suvari, Ema Horvath, and Trey Tucker — was number one on the Netflix chart.
«It’s been wild,» says the director, speaking Friday. «It’s just been non-stop, dealing with all these messages, all this buzz. I’ve done so many things to keep this alive. I drive Lyft. I’ve slept in my car. To have this film get a buzz, it was so worthwhile, it was an amazing feeling.»
Not that it’s all been good news for the director. «Every time you open a message you’re going, is this going to be a hate message?» says Duemmler. «I’m getting a lot of hate messages, so it’s like, do I click on it?»
What Lies Below stars Horvath as the 16-year-old Liberty Wells who returns home from camp to discover that her mother Michelle (Suvari) has a new, young boyfriend (Tucker) with abs to die for and the suspicious name of John Smith. The latter claims to be an aquatic geneticist with a special interest in lampreys but is in fact some sort of fish-man hellbent on impregnating Michelle. After some mid-movie weirdness in which John mops up Michelle’s menstrual blood, and the more customary-to-the-genre third act running around, the final scene finds Horvath’s character waking up in a diamond-shaped container which is rapidly filling with water and sitting in between other similar-looking, and also occupied-by-women, cells. In the very last second of the movie the now completely submerged Liberty breaks into a smile.
The movie’s unusual plot elements and head-scratching conclusion have prompted both hate mail and media interest. On Thursday, The Daily Mail website ran a piece about the film with the headline, «‘The most confusing movie EVER’: Sci-fi horror film about a sinister MERMAN preying on a mom and daughter leaves Netflix viewers BAFFLED.» The article included comments from Twitter-users about the movie which ranged from negative («What Lies Below. what a truly confusing, terrible film. Like a sexy episode of Goosebumps») to simply baffled («I just watched What Lies Below on Netflix and I genuinely don’t know what I just watched).
No one likes to receive hate mail, but Duemmler says he is happy that people are watching, and engaging, with a movie which he insists does make sense, if you pick up on the clues he embedded in the film. «I like the conversation,» he says. «I enjoy films that make you think. I really love films where you go back and you see something you didn’t see. We drop little things throughout the film. We want people to be like, oh, this is so cool, and there are so many of them. It’s cool to see people put it together. I saw this Reddit thread of some fan theory that is just the wildest thing I’ve ever read. He has ideas that I wish I had thought of.»
Below, Duemmler talks more about the film — and explains the ending.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What’s your background?
BRADEN R. DUEMMLER: I was actually a hockey player growing up and it didn’t work out. In my freshman year of college, I took a film theory class because I thought that would be cool. I just loved it. I couldn’t stop talking about film, discussing film, I got introduced to so many films from so many different cultures. I got into USC and then the rest was just me constantly trying to make movies with my friends, which ultimately culminated in What Lies Below. A lot of the crew on What Lies Below are my USC film school friends. That’s how it all got made.
Is it true that you worked on a film with Ryan Coogler at USC?
Yeah. Jimmy (Jung Lu), the cinematographer on What Lies Below, and I shot Ryan Coogler’s short film called Fig at USC. It was a really awesome experience. I learned a lot from Ryan as a director. Even though he was just starting out at that point, you could just tell there was something really special about Ryan. He just had a different way of looking at the world and had an incredible empathy and ability to understand people and psychology.
How did you cast the three main roles in What Lies Below?
We had an amazing casting director, Katrina Wandel George, and she was just super passionate about the film. I met with Mena and she grilled me, in a good way, and then she signed on and that gave us a little bit of validation and the submissions picked up. We found Ema and Trey and Haskiri (Velazquez, who plays Liberty’s friend) through audition tapes.
So what’s going on with the end of the film? Is John an alien?
I’ve heard the [cat] is out the bag because, if you put on the subtitles, it apparently says «Alien noises.» So, yes, I would say he is a species from another planet. I don’t want to unpack it much more than that. I would say, if you missed anything, maybe go back to the time that Libby drives the car down to see into the lake and look at what she sees. We could get more into the weeds of it, if you want.
I do want! So you have the two ending scenes, one in a basement and the one in the diamond-shaped cell. In the basement, we see several people who look like John digging women out of walls. What’s going on there?
Okay. I saw it as John is designed by his species. He is an exoskeleton that has been designed as a Venus flytrap. Although the exoskeleton is the same, the algorithm changes for each one. One of them is a scientist and kind of nerdy. The other one is kind of a hipster. The other one is kind of rock ‘n’ roll. They do it to attract different personalities but they’re always after the same thing, which is very clear in the last shot. They’re collecting specimen. And I would say to anyone who felt awkward throughout the film, go back, and listen to John’s lines, and imagine he’s speaking about Libby and Michelle as specimens instead of people, and then all of a sudden his word choices make more sense.
They all just converge when the cops converge, because they don’t want to leave a footprint. They’re much stronger, faster, more intelligent than us, have heightened senses, they’re a much advanced species, so they can clear out a space in no time.
So is the final scene on a spaceship?
Yes, it is. It is the hull of a spaceship.
And the fact that Liberty smiles at the end? What is one to make of that?
She can breathe underwater and she realizes it.
Because she’s been impregnated with a blue light by John?
No, no, she hasn’t been impregnated yet. She’s been brought for further experiments. The blue light is the apparatus that allows things to breathe underwater.
Ah! Okay. The aliens are only interested in redheads. Why?
Yeah, it’s like a genetic anomaly. I was looking for something that is a little bit different in us as humans, as far as our genetic code, and I found that red hair, it has all these really interesting traits. I felt that that might be a reason why John’s species could procreate with us, that’s the only way he can is because of that one gene. It’s all part of this one grand experiment that’s basically John Smith’s species trying to figure out how they could come to this planet and take over.
Going back a bit, there is the shower scene where John sniffs his shirt, which he’s used to mop up Libby’s menstrual blood. Why does he do that?
His senses are much more advanced than ours. So, he can smell genes, in a way.
Some people have found the ending confusing. If you could go back in time, would you elaborate on the conclusion?
You know, I don’t think we had the budget to elaborate on it. [Laughs] We were shooting a shoestring movie here.
