The British Isles lying off the north-western coast of the continent of Europe are composed of two large islands: Great Britain and Ireland, and a number of small islands. The official title of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The United Kingdom includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. England, the southern and central part of the island, forms the main part of the entire country. Wales lies on the mountainous peninsula in the west. Politically Wales is a part of England and has no independent government. Scotland is in the northern part of the island. Its original inhabitants (коренные жители) are of Celtic origin. In the past Scotland was an independent kingdom and up to the present time maintains certain autonomy. Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom as an autonomous region with its own Parliament.
Great Britain is surrounded by water. It has an insular (островной) climate. The summers are cooler and the winters are warmer than in central Europe. The warm Gulf Stream washes the coasts of the British Isles and gives the country a mild climate. The climate on the continent is not so mild as that of England. The best season is spring. In the lovely month of May the weather is the finest.
The insular climate is also moister (более влажный) than the continental climate. It rains very often in England. In London, for instance, it rains more than a hundred and eighty days in the year, and in winter the brown London fog comes very often. The London fog “as thick as peasoup” is an extraordinary thing.

TEXT A. WONDERS: THEY ARE UNLIMITED
In ancient times there were known Seven Wonders of the World: the pyramids of Egypt, the gardens of Semiramis at Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the statue of Zeus at Olimpia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus at Rhodes and, finally, the Pharos (lighthouse) of Alexandria.
Years and centuries went by and man created new, beautiful edifices and statues, built large ships and developed powerful machines. From time to time people took stock and drew up new lists of the «world’s wonders». In 1913 a British magazine asked its readers to name what they considered to be the seven wonders of the 20th century. The answers were tabulated and the seven winners (given in the order of their importance) were: the wireless telegraph, the telephone, the airplane, radium, inoculation, spectral analysis and X-rays. One can, of course, amend this list or compile one’s own list of Seven Wonders. One may, for instance, think that the submarine is more wonderful than the airplane.
But that is beside the point here. What is striking about these two sets of «wonders» is a difference in choice. Two or three millenniums ago the «wonders» were all works of art, chiefly architectural objects and sculptures. In 1913 the «wonders» were achievements of science and technology. The very conception of «wonder» had undergone a change: what was regarded as a «wonder» was not something suggesting magic or the supernatural, but simply a most remarkable creation of human hands and brain.
Not long ago the weekly-newspaper «Nedelya» circulated a similar questionnaire among its readers. This time the Seven Wonders are: the study of the atom and its fission, space exploration, heart transplant, television, laser, the theory of relativity and the quantum theory. It is easy to see that most of these «wonders» belong not so much to the realm of technology or construction as to that of the fundamental sciences
TEXT B. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT
The executive branch of power in Great Britain is represented by the Cabinet and other ministers of the Crown, Government departments, local authorities and statutory boards.
Her Majesty’s Government is the body of ministers charged with the administration of national affairs. Framing the foreign and home policies is one of the main functions of the Government. In recent years the scope of Governmental functions has become wider. Now it is also responsible for supervising finance, different social services, etc.
The leader of the party that has a majority in the House of Commons is appointed Prime Minister by the Sovereign. All affairs of the state are conducted in the name of the Queen (King), but really the PM is responsible for every matter submitted to Parliament. He is a virtual ruler of the country. Informing the Sovereign of the general business of the Government is what the PM does as well. He also presides over the meetings of the Cabinet, which are always secret.
The Cabinet has no legal existence beyond the powers of the Ministers of the Crown. It is simply a committee for carrying out the business of the Government. The PM is the chairman of this committee. It is he who appoints its members, summons it and can dissolve it.
Ministers in charge of Government departments are known as «Secretaries of State» or «Ministers» or may have a traditional title.
Who usually constitutes the Cabinet are the PM, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (who is in charge of the Treasury), the Foreign Secretary, the Lord Chancellor, the Secretary of War, the Secretary of State for the Home Department, the Secretary of State for Education and Science, etc.
