Popular Magazines for English Learners

Magazines are often associated with gossip and celebrities. However, they are not only about that. English teachers may find plenty of amazing and helpful articles in magazines to use in their classrooms. Magazines for English Learners get your students to enter the world of English speakers, read interesting articles and improve their language skills.

If you are teaching teens, this online magazine will definitely serve as an interactive instrument to engage your students in the learning procedure. There are various sections in the magazine that may interest your teens — life around the world, sport, entertainment, fashion, science and technology, music, books. The language level is mentioned below each article.

Student Weekly for Teens

This is a weekly magazine published by a Thai company. The audience of the magazine is mostly teenagers of intermediate level. Here you can find articles on the topics of education, entertainment, current affairs, latest events, and song lyrics. In addition, there are also some vocabulary and grammar exercises to memorize the newly learnt material.

National geographic for Geography Lovers

The magazine has been published since 1888. It mainly contains articles about geography, science, history and world culture. Its language is a little bit complicated, that’s why this resource will suit only for higher-level students, such as Upper-intermediate or advanced. Apart from articles, you can also find a huge collection of photos and videos of nature.

People for celebrity fans

If your students are interested in celebrity gossip, this magazine will suit your classroom best. Here you can find information on the personal lives of famous people. Your students will be the first to find out which celebrity is getting married or divorced, who is pregnant and who has already given birth to a child. One of the most interesting sections of the magazine is Royals, where you can read breathtaking news about royal families. The articles can be suitable for different levels, starting from Pre-intermediate.

This is a lifestyle magazine that first was published in 1898 in the USA. It focuses mainly on travelling, home and gardening, lifestyle, food and drink. The magazine is full of amazing pictures and interesting articles about places in the Western United States. It also gives recommendations on where to stay, what to eat and what to see in different places. The magazine is suitable for Intermediate and higher levels.

The Economist for Business English classes

It is a weekly magazine founded in 1843 by the British businessman and banker James Wilson. In its sections, you will find articles about Britain, China, Asia, China, Europe, Middle East and Africa, the USA, etc. There is also a separate section dedicated to business, where you can find the latest articles on this topic and use it with business English learners. Articles found in this section can be suitable for intermediate and upper levels.

Psychology for students interested in psychology

‘Psychologies’ is a monthly women’s magazine dedicated to personal development and well-being. It was founded in 1970. Your students will find interesting articles on the topics of careers, better you, relationships from the viewpoint of psychology.

Of course, there are lots of other English magazines that you can use in your ESL classrooms. However, this was the list of the most popular ones that most teachers have found helpful. Hopefully, now you will have at least one suitable magazine for each of your students at your disposal.

1.What role does the Internet play in your life?

I would say the Internet is an essential part of my life. For me it’s a means of communication, education and entertainment. No one can live without communication with other people. But today people don’t need a personal contact to communicate. The Internet has made the distances between people unimportant. While sitting at home I can come in touch with any friend who is hundreds kilometres away from me.

If I have a problem with my studies and can’t find the solution the Internet is there to help me. I can find necessary information for my lessons and read a book on-line. It’s a great resource for learning foreign languages as well. I can improve my listening, reading, grammar skills etc.

And, of course, after hard work or a difficult day I can watch a funny video and relax.

Personally I can’t live without the Internet. I chat with virtual friends, download music, do my homework, watch films and buy things. So the Internet is a part of my life.

2. Are all mass media means popular among your classmates? Why or why not?

Nowadays mass media TV, radio, press and the Internet play a very important role in people’s life. These sources not only entertain but also educate and inform us about what’s going on in the world. They influence the way we see the events and form our world outlook.

As I’ve already said my favourite means of communication is the Internet. I believe my classmates think the same. It represents all sources in one and that is its main advantage. We go on-line if we want to read daily news or articles that interest me. I address the Internet and my mobile if I want to listen to the radio or watch a film. So do my classmates. I can find any information in the Net.

3. What questions will you ask a British teenager about the magazine article he/she has recently read?

4. Unfortunately, I have little time to surf the Net. Which sites will you advise me to visit first of all?

5. Can the Internet replace all the other means of mass media? What do you think about it?

Maybe it will in future. But nowadays there are still millions of people who learn the latest news from the newspapers, television and radio. All these have their own advantages. Besides not all elderly people can work on the computer and use the Internet. They prefer watching TV and reading newspapers. But in our fast changing world nobody could predict what will happen to the world even in 5 years’ time. That’s why I would be very careful in predicting the future.

Your little sister is going to make a card on St Valentine Day. Give her some advice.

I think I’ll give her the following advice:

· Send a card to Mother! Say that you love her!

· Don’t forget to send a card to Father!

Have you ever tasted haggis? What dishes of British cuisine would you like to try?

No, I’ve never tasted haggis but I’ve tasted “saltison”. I think, it’s very much the same. I can’t say I like it very much. But my cat (dog) likes it greatly.

17. Let’s talk about means of communication

Let’s talk about mass media. What types of mass media do you know? Which of them are the most popular among teens?

Of course, the Internet is the most popular among teens. But older people prefer TV and newspapers.

As for me I prefer the Internet. I enjoy browsing it or chatting with my friends in “Vkontacte”.

Do you agree that radio is the least popular mass medium? Why?

No, I don’t agree. I know people who listen to the radio a lot. Many people listen to the radio while driving a car.

Imagine you are given the task to find out how much newspapers are popular among teens nowadays. What questions would you ask your classmates?

I think I’ll ask him the following questions.

1. The first q-n: Do you often read newspapers?

3. The third q-n: What is the most popular newspaper in Belarus?

Imagine that you are at the newsagent’s with your friend who knows almost nothing about Belorussian newspapers and magazines but would like to buy some. Recommend him/her anything to buy.

· You must buy “SB” – “Belarus Segodnya” as it is the most popular newspaper in Belarus.

Speak about the reasons why you like or dislike watching the news.

I like watching the news on TV but I don’t do it very often. I have no time as I’m very busy getting ready for my exams and CT.

18.19. Let’s talk about healthy way of life

Let’s talk about sport and a healthy way of life. What do you do to keep fit?

Well, sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, makes them more organized and better disciplined. It unites people of different classes and nationalities.

Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our republic but football, basketball and swimming enjoy the greatest popularity.

As for me, I like sport. I like tennis, swimming, basketball, football, valley-ball. But my favourite sport is football. I play it myself and I’m a great football fan. I cheer for.

(As for me, I am not crazy about sports. I am much happier sitting on the sofa with a book or in front of the computer).

Do you agree that bad habits, like smoking, can be dangerous for us? Why?

Yes, I agree that bad habits, like smoking, can be dangerous for us. Because bad habits can lead to serious diseases. If you smoke you can get ill with cancer.

British Teenage Magazines

About half of British young people aged 12 to 16 read teenage magazines! Two of the most popular magazines for girls are «Sugar» and «Bliss». They have glossy, colourful covers and include beauty and fashion, celebrity gossip, real life stories, horoscopes, quizzes and problem pages. Of course, boys don’t usually find these magazines very interesting! Instead they buy music magazines like «NME» or magazines about sport, like «Shoot» or «Match». Usually, teenage magazines contain a lot of language that only teenagers use! They might use «celeb» instead of celebrity, for example, or «fave» instead of favourite. They also say «lads» instead of «boys», «dosh» instead of «money» and «natter» instead of «talk to your friends»! This makes the magazines more attractive to teenagers and easier to understand.

On a more serious note though, a lot of these magazines can help teens find solutions to problems they don’t feel comfortable discussing with their parents. That’s why the problem pages in these magazines are very popular. In fact, many teens buy them just for the problem page.
